Chapter 46 - Back to Real Life
Shinichi woke to the feel of Kaito's soft lips trailing across his collar bones and up to the hollow of his throat as a thumb circled his right nipple, teasing.
"Kai?" he murmured sleepily, half in question and half in encouragement.
"Hush," Kaito murmured back before moving on top of Shinichi and taking his detective's mouth in a hungry kiss. His calloused hands skimmed along the contours of Shinichi's body. The detective's eyes fluttered shut. Heat crept across his skin, and a sigh of pleasure escaped his lips.
Tangling his fingers in Kaito's wild hair, he pulled the magician into another heated kiss.
Then Kaito was sliding into him, and he let out a quiet moan as his toes curled in pleasure. Kaito's thrusts were slow and deep.
Kaito smiled as Shinichi's lean, supple body arch under him, moving to meet his thrusts. Indigo eyes remained intent on Shinichi's face as the magician relished the feel of Shinichi opening up beneath him, drawing him in until he was fully sheathed in his beloved's tight, welcoming heat. He could feel Shinichi tightening around him as they continued to move together, and Kaito groaned low in his throat as his hands closed on Shinichi's hips, and he began thrusting faster.
Shinichi gasped, head pressing back into the pillows as he dragged blunt fingernails down Kaito's back. Another deep thrust, and he let out a breathless moan. He closed his eyes, savoring the pleasure of having his thief moving inside him, touching those secret places inside him that he had only ever shared with Kaito. Again and again, his thief filled him, and it was all Shinichi could do to hang on, not wishing for the moment to end.
It was the sensation of his magician coming inside him that finally sent Shinichi over the edge.
Afterward, they lay curled up together for a while just watching the sky growing gradually brighter through the gap between the curtains.
"We're going back today," Shinichi murmured eventually into the silence. The comment was followed by a resigned sigh which Kaito echoed.
"It had to happen," the magician said philosophically. "I'm going to miss this place. Getting to go out together without a disguise or nosy friends to worry about."
"Yeah…"
"I think I might even miss the peanut gallery."
"You mean our parents?"
Kaito chuckled. "Who else? Anyway, they're kind of fun. And it's nice to have the whole family together now and then."
Shinichi's stomach did something weird and warm and fluttery at those words. Family. They were all family now in all their eyes in all the senses of the word that mattered. And he knew in that moment that that was the real gift that his parents had given him this holiday season (not the book and definitely not the unexecuted but freakishly thorough plans).
"Yes, it is, isn't it?" he murmured more to himself than to Kaito. And though it was unexpected, it was true, and he found his lips lifting up at the corners of their own accord into a truly genuine smile that was actually associated with his parents. The surprises never ceased.
All in all, it was with great reluctance that they eventually rose and began the arduous task of preparing to go back to the real lives they had managed to leave behind for these few relatively blissful days.
The packing was the easy part really. Then they spent a good hour scouring every inch of their hotel room for things they wouldn't want to leave behind and basically erasing themselves from the room that had been their home, if only for a short few days.
Once that was done, they checked out and took all their luggage to the elder Kudos' rooms because they would be here for weeks more yet. The plan was to have one last family lunch before the Kudos would send their son and his guests off to board the plane that would carry them away again—back to where their real lives and real problems were still waiting for them.
But they were trying not to think about that just yet. Not for at least another few hours.
"Really, Shin-chan," Yukiko told her only son as she gave him one last hug. "Try not to be a stranger. You can call us sometimes, you know? Just to talk. You can tell me how things are going between you and Kaito-kun," she added with a suggestive grin that had Shinichi's face beginning to burn.
"Mom," he sighed.
Yukiko giggled. "Okay, You can tell me all about it some other time."
"Mom!"
"Anyway, it really was wonderful to see you all."
"It was nice seeing you guys too," he admitted.
His mother beamed and hugged him again so hard that she literally squeezed all the air from his lungs. "Good."
With another hour to wait before they could board their plane, Kaito and Shinichi found a coffee shop to sit in while Chikage bustled off to look through the duty-free stores. With Kaito off ordering their drinks, Shinichi pulled out his phone and finally checked the messages he had been ignoring during the span of this family vacation.
Most of the messages were unimportant. There was a lot of spam, a request from the police to come by the station when he returned, and a rather long message from one Hattori Heiji.
Curious, Shinichi opened the text to find that it was an invitation to a weekend retreat at a mountain villa owned by the cousin of an old school friend of his mother's.
"What's that?" Kaito asked curiously as he leaned over to set Shinichi's cup down on the table in front of him.
"Knowing Hattori, it's probably a case," Shinichi replied, frowning. "He didn't give many details though."
"Did he give a location?"
"Only that it's in the mountains. He plans to pick me up the evening of the Friday before—if I can go."
"Are you going?"
Shinichi considered this then nodded. "If nothing else comes up, I think I will. He'd probably show up to get me even if I said no anyway. Besides, Hattori has a good nose for odd cases."
Kaito looked skeptical. "Really? He always seemed kind of a fool to me."
Shinichi snorted. "I'm not saying he isn't silly sometimes. And he's impulsive. But he's a good friend. If this is about a case, I should be there."
"Fair enough. If it turns out to be serious though, I expect you to let me know about it," the magician added, indigo eyes going serious. "You got that?"
Shinichi blinked then smiled in fond exasperation. "Understood. I'll keep you updated. Promise."
Later, they watched together as the city of San Francisco shrank and shrank as their plane soared skyward until both the twinkling city lights and the black waters of the bay vanished beneath a wash of fluffy clouds. Kaito grasped Shinichi's hand between their seats and twined their fingers together. It had been only a few days, but it seemed to them both that the bonds between them had grown stronger in that time, reinforced by the knowledge that, come what may, they were not alone. So now, content and reassured in themselves and the road ahead, they were going home.
