Chapter 20: Prison Break
Betty Brant was currently at Grand Central Terminal, following a lead that Charles Standish had told her. Oscorp was holding some kind display on their newest inventions. A lot of the stuff was really cool, but Ned, MJ and Peter would understand it better than her.
Betty looked at some kind of new microbe dispersal device, when she heard someone came in behind her. She turned and...came face-to-face with Martin Li!
"Mr. Li..."
"This will be easier for everyone if you remain calm, and do as I say," Li told her, then his eyes changed to white on black!
Betty gasped before she noticed some police officers nearby.
"Police, over here!" she cried.
One of the officers approached, but Li held Betty back. A couple Demons appeared and knocked the officer out! One of them took the dispersal device, while the other took Betty!
Li shouted to his men and they started to block all the exits. More Demons came in, with guns, knocked out the other officers and gathered all the people into a single spot.
Li got out his phone, "I would like to speak to Mayor Osborn."
"Who's calling?" The woman on the other end asked.
"The man he is looking for..."
That got Norman on the phone, "What do you want?"
"I want you at Grand Central Terminal in thirty minutes," Li told him. "By yourself. Or there will be even more blood on your hands."
Soon, everyone was sitting down, frightened as the Demons forced them into one area. Li crushed the phone, then put the Devil's Breath in the disperser.
Betty got out her phone and texted Peter,
"Party at GCT. Wear your best suit."
She tried to stay calm while everyone else were doing their best not to panic.
"Betty, I'm on my way!" Peter's voice came through. "Are you hurt?"
"No, just hurry," she whispered.
"Going as fast as I can. What are you doing at GCT?"
"I'll explain later. Listen- Li's going to release the Devil's Breath. But he's not going to do it until Norman Osborn gets here."
"This must've been Li's plan all along," Peter realized. "Make Norman responsible by forcing him to release the Devil's Breath himself."
"Sort of makes sense- in a twisted, psychotic way," Betty said.
"Okay, I'm here," Peter said. "Anything I should be on the lookout for?"
As he said this, Betty spotted one of the Demons releasing a few drones.
"Looks like he's got some drones patrolling; guess he's prepared for you."
"I'm in the ventilation system. Can you see a safe exit-point?"
Betty subtly glanced around until she saw a vent he could enter through without being seen.
"Southwest corner."
She knew he was there when she heard the quiet "THWIP" of his webs.
"I hear you," Betty whispered.
"If I get closer, the drones will spot me," said Peter.
"See that tablet I'm looking at? That controls the drones."
"Think you can snag it?" he asked.
"Yes...if you can distract them...and not get shot."
"Okay, tell me when..."
Ten seconds later, "Now."
"Incoming..." Then Peter shot a web-ball at the clock on the middle register, startling the Demons. A few of them moved away from watching the hostages, giving Betty a chance to sneak over to the tablet. But just as she grabbed it, one of the hostages decided to be brave...or stupid!
"They're not gonna take me without a fight...!" a man said as he got up and rushed one of the Demons!
"No!" Betty cried.
The man tried to punch the Demon, but he ducked and grabbed him!
"Bìxū chéngwéi yīngxióng... " The Demon mused, before pointing a gun at the man's head! (Translation: Had to be a hero...)
"Wait!" Betty called out. "Let's all just...relax. I'm an intern reporter. I have a direct line to Mayor Osborn. I can help make sure he arrives- on time."
Another Demon spoke to Li on his radio, then the other one let the man go and led Betty away.
What the Demons didn't know was that Peter was waiting nearby, and as soon as Betty and her "escorts" came into an isolated area, he swung down and webbed them to the walls!
Betty hopped over the railing, down to below some steps, where another Demon was patrolling at the top. She went up one of the other sets of stairs to avoid being seen. Two drones hovered passed her! She found a hiding spot and used the tablet to disable them. They still hovered around, but were no longer primed to shoot Peter if they spotted him.
"Okay, the drones are down," she whispered.
Peter hung upside-down in front of her, "Okay, let's get you out of here."
"What about the Devil's Breath?"
"I'll come back for it. Besides, Ned will-"
"Ned's already in the dog house with me for what happened at Central Park."
"Ouch...sorry," Peter apologized.
"It's fine, but if we don't help those people, they could die."
"So could you...!"
"I got myself into this," Betty insisted. "So I'm getting myself out."
Before Peter could ask what she meant by that, she moved to a different hiding spot.
That's when Peter realized she was going back to the Devil's Breath, and there were way too many guards around. But, thanks to Betty carefully throwing some small noise lures that Peter had given her; she got the Demons a good distance away from each other so Peter could incapacitate them. When she got close to where the hostages were; Li returned, demanding to know where she was. Betty gave Peter the go ahead to pull one of the Oscorp display screens down onto a couple Demons, knocking them out!
"Start the timer," Li ordered before he left.
One of the Demons went over to the disperser and set the timer for two minutes.
"Dammit...!" Betty cursed, softly.
"Okay, now's your chance," Peter told her.
Seeing that no one was watching, Betty snuck over to the disperser.
"Alright, tell me what you see."
"I see four wires," she answered. "Two blue ones, one yellow, and one red." She turned it and saw some symbols for the colors. "Oh! Looks like the blue is connected to the battery, and the yellow to a fan. Red has an exclamation mark."
"You need to detach the wires from the battery first," Peter told her. "Trace the wires to the other end and unplug them from there."
Betty nodded before she carefully unplugged the two blue wires from the battery...but the moment she did, the timer went down to 30 seconds!
"What?!" she gasped quietly. "The timer just dropped to thirty seconds!"
"Damn, it's a collapsing circuit," Peter cursed. "Okay, unplug the fan next, then the red one."
Realizing that the pressure was really on, now, Betty wiped her forehead as she began to carefully unplug the wires, especially as the timer reached 15 seconds.
Thankfully, she did it!
"Whew! I did it!" she quietly cheered.
"Good job!"
"Now, let's get these people out of here."
"Okay, I'll let you know when," Peter told her. He took out at least six Demons around the area, then gave Betty the go-ahead.
"Everyone, follow me!" Betty exclaimed as she got up!
Though everyone was still a bit scared, they quickly began to head out!
The Demons let them go to focus on Peter! It was a bit tough with there being so many, some with guns, scythes, and swords! Once it was down to a few guys...
"Peter, Martin Li just got on a train!" Karen told him, also pinpointing the man's actions on his HUD.
Peter subdued the last few Demons with a Trip-Wire and a Web Grenade, then web-zipped into the train, and Mister Negative was waiting for him!
"Finally," he said with a smirk.
"Sorry I'm late," Peter snarked. "It's kinda my thing."
Martin jumped at him and threw a punch, but Peter backflipped away, then delivered several kicks to Li's face! He backflipped away when Li threw some dark energy at him! Peter used some of the balance bars to vault-kick Li into the next car!
"Why are you doing this?!" Peter asked.
Two Demons walked over to Martin as he got up,
"Paying off an old debt."
He absorbed energy from his men, making them collapse, and some energy flared around Li's head as he cracked his neck. He fired a vertical line of dark energy at Peter, who jumped onto the left side of the train to avoid it! He kept dodging a few more times, until Li got tired, then he delivered several more kicks to his face!
Li grabbed Peter by throat, bringing his face up to his!
"You're sick! Let me help you, Martin!" Peter pleaded.
In response, Martin slammed him into the wall and punched him in the face, twice! Peter ducked the third one and elbowed him in the face, but Martin grabbed him from behind and jumped out of the train! They flew through the tunnel until they crashed through the windows of another train!
People were forced to run for their lives as the battle ensued! Li punched Peter a few times, but then he webbed him in the face and kicked him away! Li sent more dark energy waves at him, which he dodged, but then Li tackled him to the floor!
"I don't want to hurt you!" Peter pleaded.
"Nothing can hurt me!" Li growled, punching him. "Not anymore!"
Li imbued his fist with energy, but Peter punched him off, then web-drop kicked him into the train controls, which electrocuted him until he passed out!
But now, Peter had no way to stop the train!
"No brakes? No problem."
He fired multiple weblines down the tunnel tried to hold them in place with his strength to stop the train, but the webs couldn't hold!
"Damn, I thought that would work!" Peter saw the train was about to crash into another train! "Yuri, are they still doing construction on 42nd and 1st?"
"Street's closed for another month," she answered. "Why?"
Peter jumped up to the ceiling in the tunnel, then used his webs to pull the tracks out, which made the runaway train go up! It crashed through the ceiling, onto the closed road that Peter had mentioned, where it fell onto its side, finally coming to a stop!
Inside the wrecked train, Li tried to crawl out, but Peter stopped him.
"It's over."
Later, Sable Agents took Li to the prison next to Ryker's Island. It was like the Raft, but more convenient for New York super-criminals; it was called Tartaros, like the Underworld prison from Greek mythology. Sable Agents also took the disabled disperser with the Devil's Breath away, hopefully to a more secure location.
Commissioner Stacy told Peter "Good job", which he needed to hear, then he left.
Before heading home, Peter decided to check in on Otto. When he got to the lab, the doctor was nowhere in sight.
"Hello?"
"Parker!" Otto's voice called, excitedly. Peter finally saw him, wearing a dark green bodysuit lined with a black polymer.
"Just in time to celebrate!" The man smiled, handing Peter a mug.
"Celebrate?" The younger man was confused, then looked around the lab. "Wait...where are the arms?"
Two mechanical tentacles emerged from behind Otto's shoulders. They were made of a carbon fiber polymer, and had four pincher claws at the end. At the end of each claw are two sets of four sharp claws, the larger of which were tipped glowing-yellow.
"Oh wow...!" Peter gasped. "So cool! But how did you-?"
"Intracranial neural network," Otto informed as one of the claws grabbed onto a bottle of champagne and gently placed it in his hand, opened it, and then poured some into Peter's mug. "Neuro-transmission speeds under one nanosecond. Faster than signals travel inside the brain! Never mind to an external prosthesis! We did it, Peter. No one can take this away from us."
"Incredible," Peter said.
"And your work on the neural web was the key," Otto added, then the arms actually carried him forward.
Peter was amazed, but also concerned, "But we haven't even tested it yet. There's so much we don't know..."
"It works beautifully," Otto insisted. "C'mon, take a look."
Peter picked up the tablet which had the display "INTRACRANIAL NEURAL INTERFACE V4.3013". He began to run diagnostics, but there was an error at 24%; a voltage spike. No matter what Peter did to fix it, it kept saying there were more problems.
Finally the display showed possible side effect probabilities: 38.7% of seizures, 40.4% of short-term memory loss, 62.3% of long-term memory loss, 98.3% percent of limbic degradation, 94.8% of frontal lobe edema!
"WARNING
HIGH RISK OF MOOD AND/OR PERSONALITY SHIFT
DISCONTINUE USE IMMEDIATELY"
"This is really bad," he looked around for Otto. "Doctor?"
He came back over, still smiling.
"Doctor, I found a potential problem-"
"Everything has problems if you look hard enough," Otto replied, and Peter saw where the arms were placed; in the center of his lower back. "But fortune favors the bold."
Two more arms emerged, making a total of four, and they lifted Otto into the air.
"It's time to show the world what we've done!"
"Otto," Peter pleaded. "The neural web isn't isolating your motor neurons. It could be affecting other parts of your brain; your inhibitions, your mood...I just think we need to do some more testing."
"We've done enough testing!" Otto exclaimed. "For the first time in my life, I don't feel like a failure. I feel like me."
"Otto; you're not a failure. But this could permanently damage your mind. Please."
Otto calmed down, "Right..."
He lowered himself to the floor and reached to the back of his neck, turning off the interface.
"Don't worry," Peter assured him. "We're close."
Otto nodded, "I'll keep at it... Work out some bugs... Go..."
"You sure you're okay?" Peter asked.
"Yes."
"I'm just a call away if you need me," Peter assured him, then turned to leave.
"Thank you, Peter," Otto said. "For...for everything."
Peter nodded, smiling, then left.
The TV showed Norman Osborn giving a statement at Grand Central Terminal about Li's arrest.
"Martin Li is now behind bars. When I make a promise to this city, I keep it."
Otto made sure Peter was gone, and turned the interface back on.
"The people of New York will soon make a decision that could change the course of this city forever," Norman continued. "So when you're casting your vote, remember what I've done. We are all safer now than we have ever been-"
"LIAR!" Otto yelled, then one of the arms destroyed the TV! "You have no idea what you're in for..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Scene Change~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On his way home, Peter called May,
"How are you holding up since...you know?"
"I'm alright, Peter," May assured him. "The Martin I know couldn't have done those horrible things, but... Even without the letter he left me, I know not to leave this place; these people still need help."
"Yeah. I guess MJ gave it to you?"
"Yes," May answered. "She's already waiting for you at home."
"Okay, thanks May!" Then he hung up.
He eventually arrived home, took off his suit, and heard Anya giggling from his and Michelle's bedroom.
"Hm? Who's a boobah?" MJ's voice said in a cutesy-tone, and their daughter continued to laugh. Peter went back to their room and saw her tickle Anya's tummy, laying prone on the bed. He already found the sight heart-warming, and adorable...but MJ was wearing her sheer white sleeveless tank, no bra, and cotton white underwear.
Her hair also looked like she'd just taken a bath or shower. She adjusted her position, getting back to whatever book she was reading. From where he was standing, Peter had a great view of seeing Michelle's cute little butt shake from side-to-side.
'Oh, boy...!' he thought.
No doubt she already knew he was there, thanks to their spider-senses, but she pretended not to notice. He quietly approached her, then started kissing her neck, right where he knew she liked it most.
"Mmm...Peter..." MJ smirked.
"You wiggling this cute little ass of yours..." he whispered into her ear, sending chills throughout her whole body. He even groped her butt and spanked it. "You probably did that on purpose; didn't you?"
"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't," she grinned.
He gave her butt a little kiss, then climbed into bed with her, and picked up Anya.
"Hi sweetheart~!"
Anya cooed and squealed, wiggling her little hands at her father.
Michelle smiled at them before getting serious, "I saw on the news that you got Li..."
Peter nodded, adjusting their daughter in his arms, "How are you holding up?"
"I'm fine, I guess," she shrugged. "It's hard, knowing that he did all those terrible things, but was still genuine about helping people..."
"I know. You're still gonna stick with F.E.A.S.T. though, right?"
"Of course I am; the people there still need help, despite what Li did."
Peter smiled, "You're incredible."
"So are you," she replied.
Anya started yawning, so Peter took her to her room and put her to bed. When he returned, he took off his shirt, climbed over Michelle and kissed her. She smiled against his lips as she set her book aside, then wrapped her arms around his neck. They both moaned as their kissing became more passionate.
"Ahhh...Peter...!" MJ whispered.
She tangled her fingers into his hair, but then his phone went off. It was a sound similar to an "Amber Alert" that he and Ned put on the crime app, meant to warn him when it was an emergency.
Although the young couple was annoyed at being interrupted; they were more worried.
"That's the "emergency alarm", isn't it?" she asked, apprehensively.
"Yeah..." Peter answered, then checked his phone...and gasped in horror!
"Peter, what's wrong?"
"The truck carrying the Devil's Breath just got into a wreck," said Peter. "And that's not the worst part..."
"Please don't say what I think it is..." she muttered, worriedly.
He nodded, "The Devil's Breath is gone...!
"Shit!" she cursed, but not quite as loud. She got out of their bed, went to the living room and turned on the news. She saw the truck also had Sable Agents on the ground around it!
She glanced back and saw Peter was about to head out, wearing his suit,
"I am so sorry-"
"Don't waste time apologizing; go!" Michelle ordered.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Scene Change~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Peter arrived at the scene of the crash, the police were already there. The disperser was on the ground, busted open...
A police chopper flew overhead as Yuri called him, riding in the chopper,
"I know; the Devil's Breath is gone. But we've got bigger problems!"
An explosion went off on Ryker's Island!
"Ryker's?!"
"We have to hurry! Hop on-"
Before she knew it, Peter was already clinging to the chopper on her side!
"What happened?!" he asked.
"It was a coordinated attack," Yuri told him. "Must've been planned from the outside. Every cell block is breached. We're minutes away from every prisoner in Ryker's walking right up Fifth Avenue."
"What about Tartarus?" Peter asked.
"Should be okay," she answered. "It's a supermax facility; better security, and a separate power grid."
"Good. What about Devil's Breath?"
"Sable's handling it," she told him.
"Do you trust them?"
"Do I have a choice?"
Peter saw some prisoners driving a truck!
"Oh, shit!" he cursed.
And he saw they were looking to crash into a gas tank! He jumped down, yanked the driver out, then started fighting the escaped prisoners! Once they were dealt with, he moved onto the yard, where he saw some of the inmates had gotten their hands on weapons; even rocket launchers!
As he fought, he heard Yuri talk to Sergeant Hanson on the radio; he said the power went out, then all hell broke loose! The yard was in chaos; Peter subdued all the prisoners he could, saved Sergeant Hanson, and prevented a chopper from being stolen!
But then, an explosion of electricity came from Tartarus!
"I thought you said Tartarus was secure?!" Peter exclaimed.
"It was. Hop on!" Yuri replied, then he stuck on her door. "Maybe it's not as bad as it looks."
"Love the optimism," Peter commented. "But in my experience; when it looks bad, it's usually worse."
The chopper came up to the top of the super-prison, and Electro was there!
"Look out!" Peter shouted before the villain zapped the helicopter! Peter yanked the chopper door open as it spun out of control, and he grabbed Yuri! They landed safely after the chopper crashed into the prison!
"You okay?"
"Yeah," she said, then Electro flew past them!
"Welcome to the party," he announced. "Just in time for the fireworks."
He zapped the controls for the cells, letting all the inmates out!
"Looks like we made parole, boys!" shouted one of them before they began to riot!
Yuri headed to the main control room while Peter dealt with the riot Once the prisoners were all down, he ran over to force open the door to the next area, only to knocked back by one of the pillars thrown by...
"Oh, hi Rhino!"
"Hope you like surprise, spider!" he said, before running off, followed by Electro!
Peter parkoured over the broken pillars and web-zipped into the next area.
"Hey, what's your status?" Yuri called him.
"Me?" Peter asked...seeming unaware of a long green tail dangling behind him. "Just trapped in a prison with every criminal I've ever put-"
The tail grabbed him by his throat and pulled him up, till he was face-to-face with Scorpion!
"This is just too good to be true," he said, sounding excited.
"Scorpion- can you hold on a minute? I was in the middle of a call, and it was business-"
An explosion knocked him out of the villain's grip and he crawled away!
"Lost you there...you okay?" Yuri called him back.
"Not really," Peter answered as he fought more prisoners. "Electro, Rhino, and now Scorpion are all on the loose. What's going on in the rest of the prison?"
"Camera systems almost back up," she said. "I'll let you know, soon."
"Okay, I'll keep tracking Electro."
After all the inmates were down, he dodged a bolt from Electro!
"C'mon Spider-Man, I thought this was a chase!" The villain taunted before flying away!
Peter went after him, and ended up web-swinging around the outside of the prison just to chase him! He was briefly interrupted by Vulture II, but got back to chasing Electro! Yuri told him that everyone in Tartarus had escaped, including Martin Li!
The chase eventually led to one of the towers, where Electro stopped to wait for him.
"How do you like my new suit?" the electrified villain asked as bolts of electricity sparked off of his body.
"Dashing," Peter responded dismissively. "Where'd you get it?"
"It's an exclusive club," The villain responded, then Vulture II flew around the area, and Rhino showed up!
The armored Russian charged, but Peter front-flipped over him, then webbed Vulture in the face as he flew at him, then threw him into Rhino! A helicopter flew in, with Mister Negative riding in it. He fired some dark energy, which Peter avoided, then dodged a swipe from Scorpion's tail and kicked him in the face!
Li arrived on the roof, and Peter realized he was completely surrounded by five of his super-villains!
"Remember, he said not to kill him," Li told the others.
"Good idea," Peter agreed. "In fact, we don't really have to do this if you don't want to-"
"We definitely want to," Rhino exclaimed before he charged!
Vulture flew in but Peter punched him away, then caught one of Rhino's big fists, only to get knocked back by Scorpion's tail! He rebounded and kicked Vulture away as he flew back in! He maneuvered around the radio tower with his webs, kicked Scorpion down, then avoided a blast from Li! He webbed onto Rhino's back, only for Vulture to grab him, but he got out of his grip!
But as soon as he landed, he was stabbed in the back by Scorpion's tail!
~~~~~~~Scene Change~~~~~~~
Michelle and Ned had been watching the news since the start of the breakout!
But when Peter got stabbed...
"No!" MJ exclaimed.
"Peter!" Ned yelled.
~~~~~~~Scene Change~~~~~~~
The poison from the tail made Peter fall to the ground! His body felt entirely numb, unable to move!
Li, Vulture, and Rhino all kicked him while he was down, then Electro zapped him! He tried to crawl away, but when he made it to the edge of the roof; a large metal claw grabbed his wrist, and three more claws grabbed onto the roof!
This would definitely be added to one of the most horrible moments of Peter's life...Otto Octavius appeared, supported by his metal arms! He was wearing that green and black suit, and round dark goggles over his eyes!
"Doctor Octavius?" He was so shocked; he could barely get the words out.
"First and final warning," Otto said, then had his arms lift Peter up by his ankle and wrist! "Stay out of our way."
And he threw Peter off the roof!
Otto turned to the other villains, "Each of you has a job to do. Your debts will be repaid when we're done. Go!"
The villains scattered.
Yuri found Peter floating on a metal oil drum in the river, unconscious but alive. White Tiger showed up once they returned to shore, assured Yuri that she'd get him some medical treatment, then had Ned give them a portal to Peter and MJ's apartment.
Michelle helped the tiger-themed hero get her boyfriend/fiancé onto the couch.
Thankfully, Anya was still asleep, so she had no idea what was going on.
Michelle deactivated Peter's suit, revealing his face...bruised pretty badly.
"Will he be okay?" Ava asked.
"He heals fast," MJ replied, but still sounded worried.
"Dammit..." Ned cursed, worriedly. "I can't believe Dr. Octavius actually did that...!"
"I know," MJ said, sadly. "It's like...he's not the man he used to be, anymore."
~~~~~~~~~Times Square~~~~~~~~~
There was big crowd of people holding up signs that displayed their support for Mayor Osborn. Little did they know, one genius with a strong vendetta against their beloved city leader was looking over them from one of the buildings.
"All these years, all these lies," Octavius muttered. "Time to give them the truth."
He extended his metal arms out, carrying the vial of Devil's Breath...before he broke it open with his claws, releasing a large red cloud! He put on a breather mask to keep himself from getting infected, then climbed up the building as the cloud grew bigger!
Oh, the Devil's Breath has been released!
Things just got worse!
