Prompt:

After the player chooses to take the 'Sand Ruins' route, the team compile together and begin to walk through.

Amy's still upset over the events of the previous level, and it's clear that her emotions are picking a fight with Sonic.

The player is aware that Amy wants Sonic to show a sign of concern, after what Eggman said about Sonic never allowing himself to ever care too deeply for anyone, especially falling in love with someone.

This was mostly said to cripple Amy a moment from defeating him and have her think, giving him enough time to escape with the Chaos Emerald.

Still bitter about losing the emerald, the team don't pry into it, and simply state they'll find it. But Amy is still a bit urk'ed by it, and this next scene is the consequence of that. Being the only Chaos Emerald they could find, Amy took the loss pretty hard, and the words even harder.

Amy and Sonic begin to spark up some form of a banter, Amy being argumentized and Sonic trying to stay neutral through it. Tails hears the odd change of tone from the two's usual behavior and turns around.

Knuckles sees him stop and turns around as well, as Tails shrugs to him and stops their walking.

Sonic is being slowed down by repeatedly having to turn and address Amy, but he clearly feels he's being hounded on, but he's not sure why.

"You could at least stop yelling at me!"

"I-I'm not! I'm only raising my voice because you are." Sonic bends his eyelids back to show some apprehensiveness towards her strange bewilderment, not sure what she's so upset about.

"Ugh! Maybe I wouldn't be frustrated if you just-!" She stopped walking forward, waving her hands out and gripping her head, looking deeply distressed. "Maybe it's because you never show me what you're thinking!"

"…I… I'm not really thinking of anything in particular." Sonic shrugged, holding a hand out then as he noticed her begin to flip out. "Amy… you haven't been okay since Eggman got away. What's on YOUR mind?"

"Do you really care? Or are you asking just so I can calm down?" She really looked like she wanted a fight… hunching a little and leaning herself forward a smidge.

The awkwardness of the two fighting brought worry and concern to both Tails and Knuckles's faces, as they kept looking to each other, thinking one of them should step in.

"Uh… guys?" Tails went for it, but although Sonic turned to give Tails his attention, Amy went off again.

"See!? You don't even answer me!" She swiftly turned around, holding her head and then closing her eyes, swinging her other arm hopelessly down. "I… I can't… I don't want to do this anymore…"

Sonic immediately looked back at her, trying to be sensitive. "Don't want to do what anymore?"

"…I… I don't…" She barely could bring the words to her mouth, before turning slowly to him, hugging herself lightly, and on the brink of tears. She looked ready to say something, but sighed and shook her head down instead.

"…Amy," Sonic became more assertive, stepping forward and moving a hand out, "I don't really get what you're so upset about… but I've been trying everything to figure it out, and you just keep lashing it back out at me. What am I doing wrong?"

"Us."

Sonic looked confused, as Tails and Knuckles's eyes widened, their frowns widening down to show their teeth; clearly, they knew this was about to get awkward for them, and fast.

"You're not trying… everything with us!"

She suddenly seemed to realize what she just said, and plugged her mouth, looking aghast she would even shout such a thing.

"I'm…" tears formed. "…I'm so sorry." She raced away, deeper into the sandy ruins as she jumped from a broken pillar up into a structure's window.

"Amy!" Sonic held out a hand to her, but watched her acrobatically escape the situation.

He was held there for a moment,… watching the view of her disappear before looking down and lightly shifting his eyes about, trying to figure out where that came from.

"Uh… guys?" Sonic turned to Tails and Knuckles.

They were both trying to play it cool, but Tails was posing with a crinkled face of a thinker, hand to his chin. Knuckles had turned away, pretending to look up at the sky and not act like he heard anything, on the verge of whistling to further state his avoidance.

"I think I need to take this." Sonic gave them a pitiful smile, clearly feeling the 'this is awkward' vibes from them.

Knuckles nodded, and Tails gave a thumbs up— a pity-stricken… 'poor sap'… and sympathetic expression— before clearing his throat and walking up to him a bit.

"Me and Knuckles can go on ahead while you regroup with Amy." He took the initiative, which Sonic seemed appreciative of.

"Thanks, buddy. See you guys at the edge of the desert." He gave them a final, motionless wave like a salute, and raced into the structure.

"Oh, Amy." He shook his head as he ran, keeping a good pace going, and looking somewhat exasperated. "What am I gonna do?"

After realizing the structure has puzzles and quirks to it, the player must race through booby traps but move cautiously through crumbling or extremely sandy areas/surfaces. After finding Amy in a stacked blocked room, up towards the top, and in what appears to be a square indent along the sides of the upper wall; the player must complete moving-block puzzles before being able to unlock all the bounce-pads to propel Sonic to her location.

This scene follows the last events…

Sonic pulls the last block into place, jumping onto the revealed bounce-pad, and getting flung into the several others that the player unlocked before landing on a block below the one that's in front of Amy.

Wearily, he parkours up the side of it and grips the edge, cutely pulling himself up to peek over the edge and see her crying in a small corner. Her fetal position is slightly broken however, as Amy wipes her tears away with her arm.

Sonic tilts his head, showing curiosity at what's going on, before dipping his head slightly more down, out of sight, and guiltily speaks up.

"Uhhh… May I come in?" He tries a charming smile.

Amy looks startled by his appearance but ducks her head a little back into her arms, hugging her legs.

He takes that as a 'yes', frowning and 'hmm'ing as she doesn't speak up.

He climbs over the rest of the block and walks into the square dent in the wall, sitting down to the side of her, out in front of her legs, and lifts a knee up while letting the other leg spread forward.

He places an arm on the knee, "Ah~" He seems to be taking a break, but looks back to her, seeing her still sniffling and wiping her eyes.

He looks away again, clearly growing awkward at the silence before speaking again. "I… Um," he scratches behind his neck. "Heh. You know I'm not very good with words… or… this, but…" he lowers his hand again and sighs, looking back to Amy.

He leans back, smiling, "Come on, Amy… we both know you can't stay mad at me forever." He closed his eyes, looking confident in that.

Amy held back a smile, and looked away from him.

"What? The silence treatment?" He tried to be more playful, optimistically hoping she would find it funny and leaned his body to try and look over to her.

He ducked his head down a bit, before stretching himself over to reach her eyesight.

"That also doesn't usually last long~" his voice was cheery, full of pep and hope, as she couldn't help but smile at him.

"Heh." She allowed a light giggle, wiping her eye on her shoulder, and looking back at him.

"Amy… how are you really…" he paused himself, looking away. "…Thinking?" he seemed more comfortable with saying that word.

She noticed.

Getting up, she moved to the very back of the open-squared wall. "Are you just saying that? To make me feel better..?" she sounded so lost… it hurt him slightly, and he quickly got up too, seeing her sit down in the same position she once had again, not facing him.

"H-hey, now…" He stepped forward and reached out, before pulling himself back.

His hand suddenly formed a fist, and he pulled himself away.

"You know I-!… you know I do… care, right?"

Amy's head slightly rose up, as she glanced a little behind herself at him.

He rubbed the back of his head, avoiding eye-contact as his feet became antsy.

He paced a little, talking with his hands and not directly to her. "I know I don't spend a whole lot of time with you… and I admit that I haven't always been as…" he slowly rolled his eyes back to her. "Sensitive as I should have been about your… feelings… for me." It seemed hard for him to even form the word.

He folded his arms and turned away from her again, looking as though he was really struggling with saying these things.

Amy twisted her torso to get a better look at him, breaking her form and looking genuinely innocent-eyed up at him.

"…You've used them against me…"

"…A couple of times… Yeah." Sonic untensed his body, and finally got enough strength to turn back to her. "Which was stupid. Because… Because I honestly do believe you… you… um…" he looked away. "Care… about me."

She smiled, her eyes bending back to show how touched she was at hearing him say that about how she felt towards him.

"I never knew it affected you this much…, okay, well, kinda. I mean, not really but… i-it's hard to get you sometimes Amy, but… But I'm at least trying, right?"

He scratched behind his head again, before turning helplessly back to her, looking as though he was lost on what to do now.

"I don't mean to hurt you, Amy… and I honestly don't know where this all came from… but if you need to say something… I'm here now. I can't lie and say I'll always be… but for now… at least… I can hear you out."

He moved back to face her, and took a bit of a deep breath, but disguised it well.

He flicked out a hand in a gesture for her to speak up, "What's been bothering you, Amy?"

It was what she wanted. A moment of real concern. That he truly did care.

She felt overjoyed with tears and got up immediately to jump into his arms.

"W-woah!" he flailed back, but she just held him steady, digging her head into his chest.

"Thank you… for acknowledging how I feel."

She lightly looked up at him.

"I … I could kiss you, you know."

He suddenly stiffens, "W-wh-why would you want to do that?" he shifts his eyes about, before worriedly leaning back and away from her. "I thought you were still mad at me?"

"You were right." She giggled, "I can't stay mad at you for too long."

"A little longer would be okay." He sheepishly tried to remove her hands from around him. "And while we're on the subject, why were you so mad at me?"

"Eggman…" she looked away, "He… said something. And then got away." She pouted, not liking to admit her defeat.

"…So he said something… huh?" Sonic seemed to be thinking about that, as Amy turned back to him, and put her hands behind her back.

"What'cha thinkin' about now?"

"…How easy it is to snatch an emerald back." He looked up, winking to her to show he didn't mind her losing it. "Come on, Amy. You act like it's a tragedy. We always lose the Emeralds, but we get them right back! We're a team! And that's why we shouldn't let petty disputes run us off like that…"

She blushed and looked away, "You… you didn't like me running away?"

"Does anyone?"

She turned to give him the saddest eyes he had ever seen before.

They broke into his soul and left him defenseless.

He knew at once what they meant…

He slowly moved his head down, eyes looking away. "…Oh." He tapped his foot and looked to the exit, wondering how he was going to dig himself out of this one.

He took a big breath…

Then raced to the wall, smashing his back up against it.

"No!" he suddenly cried out, half-sprawled out on the wall. "Don't! Stop!" he flung his head around, squinting his eyes shut.

Amy rose an eyebrow, curious but confused.

Sonic continued to shake his head around. "No, quit it! Cease!"

He then opened one eye to peek at her.

A small smile scaled the side of his muzzle.

"Well?" he suddenly stopped the act. "I thought you said you could kiss me."

It didn't take long for Amy to get the picture.

She excitedly raced over, kissing his cheek.

"No! Why, oh, cruel world!" he didn't fight her, didn't even raise a hand to push her back or stop her. He just pretended to be unwilling, which only made it funnier.

"Stop! Amy, please, mercy!"

He turned his head and she laughed, kissing that side too.

"No, stop, emm!" he smiled a moment before frowning and keeping the act up.

After a few pecks all over his cheeks, Amy moved to his forehead, before pulling back and really admiring his gentle-spirit.

He was putting on an act alright… but he was willing to give her a moment.

That was more… than even Eggman could have foreseen.

"Stop, no, don't!…." he suddenly noticed her rapid smooches had stopped and turned to look back at her, seeming puzzled and blinking his eyes.

"…Stop?" he seemed to be asking why she didn't continue.

She giggled, looking at his lips, before back up at him.

He looked down and furrowed his brow, then back up at her eyes before truly showing horror in them and pressing himself even further up against the wall.

"W-w-wait, stop." He looked serious this time.

"Seriously, stop." ….he didn't exactly seem to be fighting though…

Amy smirked a little, moving in closer, but being careful…

"Amy, really though, isn't that enough..?" he was moving down now, his face tightening into sheer panic as he looked around for an opening. "Y-you want to know what I'm thinking?" he said in a panicked voice.

She nodded lightly, still moving forward…

"I'm feeling trapped!" he moved his head away and closed his eyes. "No-no-no-no!"

She stopped.

He peeled open an eye and looked around, before seeing her climb down the stacked squares.

"Thanks for letting me know!" she sat down, dangling her feet over the edge, sweetly turned back in consideration to replying to him, and hopped down.

"H-huh?" he blinked his eyes, watching her fall down before sighing and seeming relieved.

Suddenly he looked bored and disappointed. "Shoot." He snapped his fingers across himself. "Overplayed it." And quickly followed after her.

"Hang on, Ames!" he looked renewed in spirit, and for the rest of the game, they seemed to have a fairly decent understanding of one another.

Amy even smacked back a comment at Eggman that left Eggman unable to rebuttal, so overall, she had a good day too.
