Amy started receiving flowers anonymously; being placed at her door step.
Walking home one day from the city, carrying her grocery bag, she noticed extra flowers and blinked her eyes curiously at them.
"..H-huh?" she then looked up, her mouth dropping as there seemed to be a trail of flowers this time.
"W-wow!" she dropped her bags, hearts in her eyes as she placed her fists up to her face, totally swooning over this kind gesture. "What on earth could Sonic be planning this time!?"
Her mind trailed off as she stuck her tongue out and up and made a goofy expression, having a thought bubble that showed Sonic laying out, stretched across the ground.
A rose in his mouth, and his eyelids drooped, he winked and motioned with a finger for her to come to him.
She leaned her body back on one leg, gripping the wooden bar that supported holding her patio's outdoor roof.
She then shook her head from all the hearts floating around her and patted her cheeks, snapping out of it. "I'm coming, Sonic!" she raced down to follow the path, the groceries still lay scattered at her door.
Following the trail, she suddenly came to another small flower shop on the outskirts of the countryside, and peeked into the window.
Blinking, she wasn't sure what this meant, and walked in, having the bell ding as she did so.
"Oh, why hello there. Come right in." A white haired, droopy mustache man, much shorter than Eggman's, was cleaning up a flower glass before setting it and the rag down, moving to the counter.
He rested his arms up on the counter and looked down to her, speaking kindly, as she couldn't tell if he was smiling, due to his mustache.
"My, another hedgehog. Flowers sure are special to you folk."
"S-sir… did another hedgehog come in just now?"
"Why certainly. Had a bit of the lovebug in his eye, and sniffed each flower. Didn't even bother with meanings or prices. Just seemed to want a striking one that would catch a lady's eye. Lucky girl, though. He's been coming by almost every day to grab a flower for the little miss's."
He looked up and stared out the window.
"Today he left with a whole bouquet of flowers, but the second I saw him speed off, I knew they wouldn't make it. Left a whole trail of petals behind. Em-emm…" he shook his head, holding it downward now. "Such a waste." he seemed to pity the boy. "Silly boy. Just like flowers, women need to be handled delicately, and with a steady hand that they can trust will nurture and care for them. Hmm?" He looked up, hearing suddenly some sniffling.
Amy's face was full on crying, her eyes big and shaky as her irises danced with her teary feelings.
"He did whhhaat?" she whined out, deeply touched.
"Oh my, miss! Don't tell me that young man was picking those flowers out for you, now!" the man leaned up, holding his hands straight out.
"Well, now… I can see what's made him so jittery! Heh, heh, heh." he laughed a crackled old man's charming chuckle, and then nodded to her. "You sure are pretty. No wonder he's been so active trying to win your fancies. Hmm…" the man put a hand up to his chin, the other under to support the arm. "I think I got it."
He walked away from the counter, and lightly touched some flowers on the shelf, before finding the one he was looking for, and showing it to her.
She followed him, drying her eyes and wiping them with her gloved wrist, just above the ring bracelets, before moving to her palm to do so.
"Miss?" he turned to hand her the flower.
She looked up, and nodded, taking it.
"Do you know what Pink Roses mean?"
"Regrettably not." she admitted, eyebrows arching back softly.
" Pink carries with it the connotation of grace and elegance, as well as sweetness and poetic romance. Light pink roses are associated with gentleness and admiration, and can also be used as an expression of sympathy." he nodded in his explanation, his old man hunch forced his hands behind his back now, and he started to wander around his shop as she stared down at the beautiful flowers.
Her eyes continued to shake in amazement, but not so animated as before.
She hadn't even told him her last name was Rose!
"Just like flowers, women carry special meanings for men too. When a man notices and most importantly, understands that special meaning, he goes out of his way to express gratitude for her in anyway he feels he can." he lovingly and wisely looked to another flower, before turning back to Amy.
"He picks flowers for their unique look and smell. I think that may mean that he values his times with you. And possibly the good you do for him in his life. A man who notices smell can easily be said that he loves the company of the one he cares for. And as for look, well, that's obvious. You, just like these flowers, are beautiful creatures. I'm sure he's just head deep in gratitude for ya, Miss." he looked off towards the higher shelves of flowers, before back down at Amy.
"Well, is there anything I can do for you now, miss hedgehog?"
"N-no… I think you've been more than helpful!" Amy chimed, overcome with her emotions, as tears gently piled up on the sides of her eyes.
"Haha, well then. My work here is done. Take care now, miss hedgehog." he lightly bowed to her.
"Y-you too, mr. flower man!" she waved excitedly to him as she exited.
He seemed to be pretty neutral at her departure, before turning around and rubbing his hands together.
"Shooo-wee! That was a close one! You can come out now!"
Sonic suddenly sprung from being crammed into a higher shelf.
He sighed, stretching his arms and legs out. "I owe you one."
"Hehehe. I told you not to second guess yourself. When I said bring her some more flowers, I didn't think you'd change your mind so fast. Well, that suits you though, don't it? Fast feet. Fast thinking. Fast regret." he shifted his eyes on that last one.
"Urk." Sonic twitched a little at his words, and blinked up vulnerably. "More than one flower would have come off funny…"
"You think that's weird?" The man blinked his squinted eyes widely, before reverting them back to old man lines. "Hiding in the blue tulips like a squashed banana is weird. Why not just tell her how you feel..?"
"W-what!?" Sonic sprang back, "I told you! It's gratitude!" he slightly shouted, raising a fist up, trying to defend himself more.
"Pfft. And that's what I told her, but you don't see me trying to defend no lovers, em-emm. I'm only saying. Even if she ain't your Juliet, a rose by any other name would still smell just as sweet, eh? You call her friend, but I think the word has changed meanings when you talk about her. I sure do." he raised an eyebrow, before nodding his head. He truly believed he spotted the signs of love in Sonic's actions.
Sonic dusted the petals out of his quills and averted his eyes, looking annoyed and upset by these questions.
"Weeeell, who am I to question you. Do as you see fit to please you. I'll just be at my little shop here, doing my business as usual." he nodded politely to Sonic, showing he was dropping the topic, and turned to the counter.
Sonic looked sorry as he his eyes back towards him, but kept his head away from him seeing his regretful expression.
"I suppose I can understand your silence on the matter." he placed his hand on the table. "After all… that girl sure is pretty. Heh-heh!"
"That's not it!" Sonic spun around before realizing he had been duped and folded his arms, pouting and looking away as the old man laughed at him.
"Stay on your toes, Sonic! I'll get it out of ya! One way, or another. That miss's ought to settle it straight, one of these days. heh-heh-heh-heh."
