Frybo

The day begins inside the Beach House. Steven was peering through a pile of laundry.

"Where are you? Tsk tsk tsk. You're a mess, Steven." Steven said to himself.

The Temple Gate opens, and Pearl comes running out towards the kitchen, holding a bubble full of 7 light-blue shards. I know I had eight…" She whispered as she searched through the counter. She then turns to Steven. "Hey, Steven, have you seen a Gem shard anywhere? It's very important."

"No, have you seen my pants?" Steven asked. Pearl finally noticed that he was wearing just a shirt and underwear. "They're also very important."

"I'm serious, Steven." Pearl told him, looking concerned. She then looked up at the stairs. "Vergil!"

Vergil was upstairs reading a colorful book and heard his name get called. "Yeah, Pearl?!"

"Come down here for a moment!" Pearl requested him.

"Alright!" Vergil did so and jumped off the edge to land at the bottom of the stairs. He then went to the kitchen to meet the other two and paused.

.

.

.

"Are you aware that you aren't wearing pants?" Vergil questioned Steven, confused.

Steven nodded. "Yep, have you seen them?"

Pearl sighed. "That's not why I called you down here." She then looked more serious. "Have you seen a Gem shard anywhere?"

"I haven't seen either of your things." Vergil answered both of their questions before asking Pearl. "What are those Gems shards anyway?"

Pearl starts explaining. "These Shards have a powerful partial consciousness that has been harnessed by Gems throughout history in order to create—"

While Vergil is listening, Steven disengages from Pearl's explanation and thinks to himself. "They weren't in the kitchen either… Under the bed! No, wait, I looked there too. And then Pearl walked in…"

Pearl continues explaining. "—semi-sentient drone soldiers with the capacity to follow basic orders. Gems once created an army of these drones but found their obedience waned as the shards overdeveloped inside their uniforms and turned on their commanders. You see, any shard imprinted by any sort of container—"

Steven looks at Pearl and gasps to himself. "Pearl! Oh, jeez, she's really explaining something… I can't just start listening now. I'd be lost! …Just like my pants…" He then notices Vergil is paying attention. "Vergil! I can just ask him about it later… Only the important stuff, though."

Pearl wraps up the explanation. "—could become a monster. That's why it's very, very important it's kept away from any kind of garment…"

Unbeknownst to them, a pair of pants is seen running past Steven, Vergil, and Pearl in the background.

Vergil raised a brow and turned for a second. "Uh… Did either of you hear something just now?"

Pearl became worried about what he was implying. "What? Could it already be inside a container?" Pearl walked over to the door and opened it. "If you see it, bring it to me, right away. I'm going to check in town." With that, she leaves the house through the front door.

Steven shouts at Pearl. "For my pants?"

"Haha, good one." Vergil chuckled, assuming he was joking. "Now, come on, let's start searching."

"…I guess I'll keep looking here." Steven notices the pants behind him. "That's unusual!" He yelled, pointing at it.

"What is?" Vergil asked before he saw the pants and gasped. "I did hear something!" He then groaned. "Why'd it show up right after Pearl left?"

The boys began chasing after it. "Come on. We used to be friends! We used to go everywhere together! Steven then cornered the pants and pounced on them. "Gotcha now, pants!" After a struggle, he puts them on. "I wear the pants in this relationship!" The pants start wriggling. "What's gotten into you? Hmm?"

Steven reaches into his pants pocket and takes out a Gem shard. The pants cease their wriggling. "It's a… Thingie."

"It's the Gem shard that Pearl was talking about." Vergil realized, surprised. "We've got to get it to her."

The shard glows and pulls Steven's shirt towards it, which he quickly pulls away. Vergil then takes the shard.

"We gotta be careful in how we handle it." Vergil said, trying to think of a plan.

While he does that, Steven then grabs a sock nearby, takes the shard, and puts the shard inside. "Ha! Now, who's smart?" The sock animates and repeatedly smacks him in the face. "Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, stop!" The sock compels his command. "Oh… Thanks!"

"Steven, what are you thinking?!" Vergil exclaimed, concerned as he took the sock. "Remember what Pearl said!?"

Steven paused and averted eye contact. "…..Yeahhh?"

Vergil looked at the sock again and scratched his head. "But then again, it should be fine if we give it to Pearl right away." He shrugged. "Besides, how much damage could a sock do?"

Steven smiled and took the sock back. "Yeah, that's true. Let's go find Pearl." He then places the sock in his backpack and zips it up.

Heavy rain hit Beach City the day before, and while there was no rain today, the sky was still filled with gloomy clouds, and the ground was still wet with puddles. As such, Steven put on his rainy-day clothes. Steven wore a pink jacket with yellow rain boots that had ducks on them. Vergil was just wearing an open black hoodie. The boys were currently walking along the boardwalk and looking for Pearl.

"Hey, Pearl! Pearl!" Steven put his hands around his mouth and yelled as he walked. "She must still be looking for my pants…"

"Hey, that was funny the first time. Don't milk it." Vergil advised him, not amused.

Suddenly, something bumps into Steven, knocking him to the ground. It reveals to be a peculiar, creepy-looking fries mascot character. The person in the costume screamed like a maniac and waved his arms around because a flock of seagulls flew in and assaulted him. "Aah, please help me! Aah, No, get them away! Please! Aah!"

Steven and Vergil both become frightened by the character, as Steven screams and cowers on the ground while Vergil gets in front of him and summons his weapon.

"Stay behind me!" Vergil warned Steven with urgency in his voice.

The person in the costume stopped running, grabbed the head of the costume, and yanked it off. Revealing himself as Peedee Fryman. Peedee is no older than Steven, short in stature, and has blond, wavy hair on the top of his head that resembles steak fries. He is also missing an upper tooth. He wears a white tank top, cargo shorts, and yellow slip-on sandals. "I'm not fries!" He yelled angrily as he swung the head at the seagulls, chasing them away.

"What the? Peedee?" Vergil realized, making his weapon disappear.

Steven lets out a deep sigh of relief and stands up. They then heard a door open and saw it was from Beach Citywalk Fries.

"Gah, where's your face, Frybo?" Mr. Fryman asked while standing in the open doorway. "Being part of the Fryman family means you gotta sell fries… And be my son, which you are." Peedee sighs, upset." "So, you're already halfway there. Keep at it, Frybo!" Fryman enters back into the building.

Peedee clenched his fist and exclaimed. "I'm Pee—" Before he can finish, Fryman closes the door. "—Dee…" He let out a dejected sigh.

Vergil walks up to him. "You okay, Peedee?" He asked, trying to be tactful.

"When I told my dad I wanted to be part of the Fryman family business, I didn't think it meant being stuck in a sweaty old costume." Peedee miserably explains his dilemma to the two and puts on the head of his costume. "Things used to be different, you guys. Nothing to worry about back then except making myself dizzy on the old seahorse ride at Funland." He pulls Steven up from the ground.

Steven thinks Peedee is joking. "Oh, Frybo, you're hilarious."

Peedee clenches his fists harder and sighs. Vergil also sighed at Steven's lack of tact and spoke out. "Is there anything we can do to help?"

"I don't know. I wish there was a way for this costume to do its job without me in it." Peedee said, feeling frustrated.

Steven then thought of an idea. "Maybe it can, Peedee…" He then became starry-eyed. "Maybe it can…!"

"Steven." Vergil got his attention. "We're forgetting about the Gem shard." He suddenly remembered and brought up. "We still need to find Pearl."

"Don't worry. I'll stay here and help Peedee. You go find Pearl." Steven told him.

"Well, okay." Vergil went down the boardwalk to continue his search.

10 minutes after he began searching for Pearl, Vergil left the boardwalk to search the neighborhood. He looked around while walking down the sidewalk and going over every turn, and yet, he still couldn't find her.

"I don't get it. Where could she have gone?" Vergil asked him, feeling stumped.

Suddenly, Vergil remembered one place he hadn't checked. He looked up, turning his gaze towards the large cliffside that towered over Beach City, and decided it was worth looking at, and so he ran off to head for the cliff.

With his fast speed, Vergil arrived in just a minute, and to his relief, Pearl was there.

"Pearl, I—" He then stopped and became confused.

Pearl was still using one hand to hold up the bubble with the Gem shards, but for some reason, she was using her other hand to pick up one rock on the ground at a time, look over them, and then put them down to pick up a different one, she then hears his call and faces him.

"Oh, hello, Vergil." Pearl greeted him, still holding a rock. "Is something wrong?"

"Uh, what are you doing?" Vergil asked, pointing to the rock.

"Leaving no stone unturned. It is of vital importance that I find the Gem shard." Pearl answered as she picked up another rock and inspected it. "Hmm, not here either."

Vergil had the expression of someone who felt like he had to say something but couldn't, but he shook it off. "Anyways.… I know where the Gem shard is."

"You do? That's wonderful." Pearl said, sounding pleased. "Where is it?"

"It's in a sock inside Steven's backpack." Vergil informed her.

"What?!" Pearl now became worried and concerned. "Don't you remember what I told you about the Gem shard?"

"Of course I do. If it gets inside a container and stays in one for too long, it'll become a monster." Vergil answered, not concerned. "I was worried too at first, but think about it: How bad could it be if it's just one sock?"

Pearl calmed down and thought it over. "Well, I suppose you have a point. But still, it's not safe to leave it be."

"That's why I came looking for you." Vergil added. "Since we know where it is, you just need to go and put the shard in the bubble with the rest of them."

"Okay then, where is Steven?" Pearl asked.

"He's probably still at the boardwalk." Vergil answered, turning to go. "Come on. I'll show you."

Pearl followed after him, and the two of them ran off towards the boardwalk.

Pearl and Vergil reached the boardwalk in only a few minutes and started heading for the fry shop. However, on the way, they passed by the Funland Arcade, where they saw Peedee and Steven riding on the Seahorse and Jellyfish rides, respectively. Steven looked like he was full of joy and looked disappointed.

[Steven!] Both Pearl and Vergil called out as they ran up to him.

"Hey, you guys." Steven waved to them.

After reaching him, Vergil looked directly at Steven. "Quick, give Pearl the Gem shard."

"I don't have it anymore." Steven told him, carefree.

"What?!" Pearl quickly ran up to him with a desperate expression. "Steven, you have to tell me! Where did you last see the shard?!"

"Are you guys talking about the thing he used on the costume?" Peedee asked, a little alarmed.

"The costume?" Vergil repeated, raising a brow. "What are you—"

The conversation was abruptly interrupted when a distant scream was heard.

"That came from the fry shop!" Peedee told them as he got off the rides with Steven, and they all ran off towards the disturbance.

The situation at Beach Citywalk Fries was horrible as people were seen running in terror out of the door of the Beach Citywalk Fries building. Two yellow tendrils then whipped out from inside. As the first tendril yanked the person back into the shop, the second one grabbed another person by the head and dragged him back inside.

The Gem, two half-Gems, and one Human could only watch in horror.

"We didn't tell him to do that. Did we tell him to do that?!" Peedee exclaimed, panicking.

Then, a table smashes through the counter windows, which they all duck and dodge in time. Steven and Peedee were shocked by how close they were to getting seriously hurt.

"Steven, what orders did you guys give the shard?" Vergil asked, now worried.

"We just told him to make people eat fries." Peedee answered, becoming afraid.

"Didn't you hear what I said about the living armor and infantries and many, many deaths?!" Pearl shouted with seriousness.

"No!" Steven immediately answered.

"Wait, you didn't?" Vergil said, surprised. "I thought you were joking!"

Then, noises that could only have come from something terrible were heard from inside the building. They all looked inside through the broken window to see Frybo standing inside with legs made of fries and bulging veins and arteries all over its body. Frybo's fry hair was the yellow tendrils they had seen before. Several people were captured with its fry hair tendrils, and the rest of the tendrils were waving around.

With both his hands holding a handful of fries and his head facing away from the window, Frybo dragged one of his victims closer to him. The man with the tendril wrapped around his neck spit out fries that were stuffed into his mouth and pleaded. "Please, no more fries!"

But Frybo didn't listen and repeatedly shoved his mouth full more of fries.

It looked as though he was going to choke on those fries and die, so Steven stepped up and yelled. "Frybo, stop!" He demanded.

Frybo does stop and slowly turns around, revealing the once innocent and uninitiated creepy-looking Frybo, who now has veins protruding all over his face. His smile remained the same, yet it somehow felt scarier than before.

Steven, Vergil, and Peedee flinch. "We're too late. It's become a monster." Pearl said with a look of urgency.

Frybo then hurls one of its victims—who happened to be Lars—at them through the windows. They duck out of the way, and he hits the table and lands on the ground. Lars spits out fries in his mouth. "I don't even like fries!" He yells before he runs away.

"Why isn't he listening?!" Peedee, panicking, exclaimed.

"I don't know!" Steven exclaimed. Both boys were panicking.

"Steven, the reason the Gem shards are dangerous is that any container they are placed inside of will eventually stop following orders and go out of control!" Pearl explained to him again.

"Enough of this!" Vergil focused his attention on his Gem and quickly summoned his Sword. "Pearl, protect the others!" He shouted before he leaped through the window towards Frybo.

"TENFOLD SLASH!"

Using the speed of his simultaneous slashing attack, Vergil cut through the three tendrils that were wrapped around the victims, setting them free. Once they were freed and ran away, Vergil dashed straight at Frybo and thrust his Sword forward.

"PIERCING DRIVE!"

Charging forth at breakneck speed, Vergil's blade pierced through Frybo, stabbed it in the stomach, and kept pushing it back until they hit the wall. Frybo then let out an agonizing squeal and kept failing, struggling to break free while Vergil pushed his Sword further into its body to keep him pinned against the wall. The others were looking through the window, watching him.

"Woah, I didn't know Vergil could do stuff like that." Peedee noted, amazed and impressed by the display of skill, before turning to Steven. "Can you do stuff too?"

"Uhh, I'm still learning." Steven answered uncomfortably.

Vergil was struggling to hold Frybo down. It was surprising that the shard gave the costume this much strength. Suddenly though, Vergil was caught off-guard when Frybo shot fries from its mouth, the fries didn't hurt, but they distracted Vergil for a second, which allowed Vergil to smack him with one of its tendrils. Vergil was knocked back a few steps but was hardly damaged and prepared to counterattack.

But what happened next surprised both of them.

The back door opened, and Mr. Fryman emerged from the back of the shop. "Peedee! Where's all this coming from?!" He asked.

Frybo shot a tendril at him, planning to ensnare him with a tendril, but Vergil intercepted its path and cut the tendril before it reached Mr. Fryman.

"Run, Mr. Fryman!" Vergil warned him.

But the man didn't and instead spoke. "Ah, I get it. I pushed you too hard! I thought you wanted to be as good a Fryman as you could be! You're a tough kid for putting up with it as long as you did! The truth is, you're a valued member of Fryman Brothers Incorporated and all its affiliates!"

Peedee, who was listening, was touched by Mr. Fryman's statement. Frybo shot more of its tendrils at Mr. Fryman while Vergil kept swinging his Sword to protect him, then he jumped forward and tackled Frybo to push him back.

"Pearl, help!" Vergil called out.

"I'm on it!" Pearl responded, summoning her Spear.

Twirling it around in her hand, she leaped onto the broken table with grace and threw the Spear. It flew through the air and stabbed right into Frybo's eye. It let out another squeal, but then its eye burst out ketchup and mustard as if it was blood.

The red and yellow stream hit Vergil like a hoose, blew him at the window, and knocked him into Pearl. The result was they were both knocked to the ground, drenched in ketchup and mustard, and Pearl dropped the bubble that was holding the shards. When the bubble hit the ground, it popped, and the Gem shards were out.

"Pearl, Vergil!" Steven rushes to them, concerned.

"Ugh, the ketchup! It's everywhere. I can't see!" Pearl said with her eyes shut, facing from left to right.

Vergil sits up and looks disgusted at being covered in ketchup. "Gah! I'm sick of fighting food-based monsters, and this is only the second one."

Back inside the building, with no one there to guard him, Mr. Fryman was caught by Frybo's tendrils that wrapped around his neck. Frybo then lifts him off the ground and shoves fries in his mouth.

"Daaaddddd!" Peedee breaks into tears and tries to lunge through the window.

"No!" Steven tackles Peedee down. "He'll mash your potatoes!" He then tries to climb over the counter.

"What are you going to do?" Peedee asked.

Steven stands proudly and exclaims. "My job!"

Mr. Fryman is then promptly chunked by Frybo towards Steven and Peedee and lands on top of them, immobilizing them, and is knocked unconscious. Frybo approaches them out of the counter windows with Pearl's Spear still stuck in its eye.

Frybo emerges from the building, Pearl's spear still in his eye, and approaches the Frymans. But before anything could be done, a sharp edge-bladed short Sword was thrown and hit Frybo right between the eyes, leaving it stunned for a moment.

Vergil, being the one who threw it, removed his messed-up hoodie and dropped it on the ground.

"That was my favorite hoodie you destroyed!" Vergil accused the monster.

He then charged at it and used his Sword to bash it to the right. Knocking it away from the fry shop and the Frymans. Vergil and Frybo then confronted each other.

"You have two weapons?!" Steven asked, surprised that Vergil had brought out something other than his Sword.

"Not quite." Vergil denied, clarifying. "I can store things in my Gem, like Pearl. So I have different weapons with me in case I need them."

"Different weapons.…" Steven pondered those words and then noticed dropped shards. "That's it." He hatched a plan. "Shards… Need!" He runs off.

"Wah?" Pearl, still blinded by the ketchup, feels around the table. "Steven?"

As the fight goes on, Frybo shoots more fries at Vergil, but he parries them away with his Sword. Then, out of nowhere, a pair of pants suddenly flies in with a Gem shard in its pocket and kicks Frybo in its face.

Vergil and the Frymans looked to the side to see where this attack came from.

[Steven!] The Frymans say together.

"Where?" Pearl asked, still blinded.

"What the fabric?" Vergil looked dumbstruck.

Steven appears to be standing proud and defiant in just his underwear and has a fry in his mouth after placing a shard in each of his garments. His socks, shirt, pants, shoes, and jacket stand beside him, along with Vergil's messed-up hoodie.

"Your move, Frybo." Steven eats the fry.

"How are you not freezing?" Vergil asked Steven, curious.

Frybo responded and charged toward Steven.

"Attack!" Steven commended.

On Steven's words, the garments collectively attack Frybo. They attacked its arms and a few of its tendrils. Together, they prevented it from moving. Cheese starts flowing out of Frybo's mouth.

"Vergil, finish it!" Steven yelled out.

"This will end it." Vergil declared.

He then placed both his hands on the hilt of his Sword and put all his concentration on this next attack. Vergil dashed forward and jumped in the air, a few inches above Frybo's head and holding his Sword over his own head.

"SKYFALL SLASH!"

With a mighty roar, Vergil slashed downwards in a vertical straight line that completely cut through Frybo's body and split the costume into two. Immediately after that, the costume went limp, lost all life, and fell over, resting in a pile of fries, ketchup, mustard, and cheese.

With the fight over, Vergil walked up to the messy pile of food, reached his hand inside, and pulled out the final Gem shard that caused all this trouble.

Vergil sighed. "The things I do for the Earth."

"Steven, Vergil, are you both alright?" Pearl asked, still unable to see.

Vergil went up to her and used a napkin to wipe the ketchup off her eyes.

"We're fine, Pearl." Vergil told her.

Now that she could see again, Pearl let out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness."

"Sorry about the costume." Steven—still in his underwear, told Mr. Fryman.

"Ah, It's okay." Mr. Fryman brushed it off. "I'm just glad everyone's okay."

"What are you going to do now?" Vergil asked.

Later that day, as the sun was starting to set over the horizon, the five of them gathered at the Beach.

Steven's garments carried the cleaned and destroyed remains of the Frybo costume and prepared to send it out to sea on a makeshift raft for a Viking funeral. Steven, still half-naked, and others look on.

Mr. Fryman started giving Frybo a sermon. "You were great, Frybo. The kids today didn't understand. Now, they never will." He said, holding back his tears.

Pearl stood with her Spear next to Vergil and Steven.

"Weren't people scared of it before he attacked them?" Pearl commented.

"Yeah, but he never noticed." Vergil informed her.

Steven shushes them.

"It's time… To send him off." Mr. Fryman takes out a lighter and sets Frybo on fire. Pearl, using the end of her spear, pushes it out to sea. As they watched the costume slowly float away, Mr. Fryman sighed. "As greasy in death… As he was in life.:

"Dad?" Peedee walked over to his father. "Uhm… I'll… Are you going to get another costume?" He asked as the two seemed to have difficulty looking at each other.

There was a moment of silence. "I don't need another Frybo. I got…" Mr. Fryman puts his arm around Peedee's shoulder. "The fry man."

Steven was posing heroically with a huge smile. "You guys, I think our work here is done."

Pearl frowns at him, unamused. "Put your clothes on, Steven."

"Seriously though… Aren't you cold?" Vergil asked a second time.

And that's the chapter. To start things off, in this chapter, we see another one of Vergil's abilities: the power to store different objects in his Gem like Pearl can. You find that he can do a few other things that other Gems can do, but don't bother asking why yet because the answer won't be coming for a while. And I wanted the conclusion of the Frybo fight to be a victory for both Steven and Vergil, something they can both say they had a part in. So Vergil basically fights it with skill, and Steven uses his wits to fight it.
