Coach Steven
Things began one night as Vergil, Steven, and the Crystal Gems warped to their mission's location. When he opened his eyes, Vergil looked around and saw that they were in the middle of an expansive desert. In front of them stood a giant tower-like structure that contained many huge pillars adorned with triangular patterns.
Steven looks up at the building, amazed. "WOAH! What magical place of mystery is this?"
"Well—" Amethyst was about to try to explain but got interrupted by Pearl, who was particularly excited.
"Oh, I'm so glad you asked! This was once a communication hub for Gem-kind." she told the two hybrids as she walked over to one of the pillars of the hub. "But lately, it's begun transmitting bursts of electromagnetic interference!"
"Whazzat mean?" Steven asked.
"Oh, electromagnetic interference is basically like wind made of electricity that messes up machines." Vergil explained.
"Eh, how bad could that be?" Steven shrugged, not grasping the problem.
"And it's hurting television." Garnet added bluntly.
"Noooooooo!" Steven cried out before turning to the pillar. "I'll save you, television! HA-YAH!" The young Gem tries to kick and push over a pillar but can't seem to damage it.
Amethyst lifts Steven up and places him away from the pillar. "Sorry, but we need a Steven at least…" She then shapeshifted into a stronger-looking Steven with much more muscles than Steven would probably ever have. "THIS strong for this job!" Amethyst spoke with a slightly deeper voice.
Steven gasps at the sight. "It's all the me I could be!"
Vergil didn't look so impressed. "I doubt you could run if you were that big."
Amethyst puts Steven down and starts punching at the pillar as the strong Steven. Pearl catches a small piece of the pillar punched off by Amethyst and begins lecturing her.
"Amethyst, we could be here all day taking out these pillars individually."
"Ugh, I hate it when you're right. You get this look on your face…" She looked at Pearl's face—She was smiling wildly, and her cheeks were up. "Yeah, that's the one."
"I don't know, I like her face." Vergil argued.
"Thank you." Pearl happily accepted his praise.
"In any case." Vergil brought out his weapon. "Let me try something."
Vergil then got into his stance, placed a hand on the hilt, and at his top speed drew his Sword from its sheath, aiming at the crack Amethyst made, he slashed.
CRAKK!
Unfortunately, after only craving through a few centimeters, he felt his blade stop and was unable to cut any further. Vergil tried to push, but he just couldn't widen the cut and had no choice but to remove his Sword from the pillar.
"Darn it." He lowered his head in frustration. "I'm still not strong enough."
Garnet placed a hand atop his head to comfort him. "You'll get there someday."
"It's okay; brute force isn't our only option." Pearl added as her Gemstone started to project a hologram. "What we need is a well-thought-out plan—"
"No." Garnet interrupts. "What we need is Sugilite. Amethyst, fuse with me."
[WHAAAT?!] Both Gems screamed. Amethyst screams in excitement, and Pearl looks annoyed and afraid.
"Yeah! Let's mash it up! Bigger, badder, better! Ohohohohoho!" Amethyst enthusiastically screams and twirls around.
Both the boys looked confused, but Steven became excited. "Hold your horses! Are… You guys going to become a Gem Fusion?"
Amethyst replies excitedly with a scream. Steven joins in the screaming in excitement, too.
"Stop screaming!" Vergil yelled at them, stopping the excitement before turning to Garnet. "So, is Sugilite like Opal?"
Garnet shook her head. "A different type, Sugilite is a form that highlights brute force and destructive power and is much bigger."
"WAIT!" Pearl runs up to Garnet. "Garnet, think about this. You and Amethyst can be a little… Eheh… Unstable when your personalities combine. We need to be careful! Fuse with me, instead."
Garnet places her hand over Pearl's shoulder. "We don't need to be careful. We just need to be huge."
"Oh, yeah! Let's wreck this joint!" Amethyst shouted and followed Garnet. They moved a few meters from the others and got into position to fuse. Pearl crossed her arms in a huff, Steven looked excited, and Vergil was curious to see what would happen.
Their Gemstones started glowing, as Garnet said. "Synchronize."
Garnet starts to dance in a somewhat sensual manner. Pearl blushed and covered Steven and Vergil's eyes.
"Wha-? Whu-? Pearrrl…Come on! I wanna see!" Steven complained and tried to look through her fingers.
But because she could only use one hand for each of them, they were quickly able to pry them off and see.
Truthfully, the reason they wanted to look so badly was that Steven wanted to see the result of their fusion, and Vergil really just wanted to see what fusion looked like, considering he missed the Opal fusion dance.
Garnet and Amethyst continue their fusion dance before colliding with each other. Just like back when Pearl and Amethyst tried to fuse at the Sky Spire, their forms glowed and mixed together into one. But unlike how the two broke apart, the fusion was complete, and the glowing form grew bigger and larger until the glowing went away, forming Sugilite as the new Gem being was towering in front of them.
Sugilite was a colossal and menacing-looking fusion with a stocky, bulky build and four arms, each pair seeming to share a shoulder joint. She featured four medium-lilac eyes located under a strong brow and a fifth one above it. Her mouth was twisted into a grin and filled with sharp, pointed teeth. She had a giant plume of spiky, dark purple-black hair kept in an untamed style similar to Amethyst's but messier. Her skin color was lavender, like Amethyst. She appeared to have purple fingernails painted to appear as gemstones themselves, which were located on her chest and on the palms of the hands of her upper arms.
She has fuchsia skin, wears a ripped, dark purple, black, and burgundy bodysuit similar to Garnet's, and a lilac visor covering her lower eyes. She had four arms which were connected to her sleeves. Her bodysuit has tears in it that are similar to Amethyst.
"Hahahahaha!" Sugilite laughs and cracks her knuckles. Her very form radiated power and strength. "I forgot how GREAT it feels to be ME!"
"Sweet colossal fosseil." Vergil stared, agasped.
"That's Sugilite?" Steven looked awed.
"You got it, baby. Hey, Steven. Wanna see something cool?" She asked, bending down as she appealed to his wonder.
"Yeah!" Steven yelled.
Sugilite summons Garnet's gauntlets and Amethyst's whip and fuses them together to form her flail that crashes down on the ground. Steven gasped loudly in amazement while Vergil looked surprised.
"You like that, little man?" Sugilite asked.
"Are you gonna smash stuff with your wrecking ball thingy?" Steven asked.
"It's called a flail." Vergil corrected him.
"That's the plan! Where should I start?" Sugilite got ready by turning to a pillar.
"Do that one!" Steven points to a nearby pillar.
Sugilite proceeds to smash some pillars with her flails.
As debris fell near them, Pearl started to pull Steven. "Boys, I think we should go." She said, going for the warp pad.
"No way! This is awesome!" Steven protested, wanting to stay
Vergil seemed unsure about all the destruction, though. "I don't know, being doesn't seem safe anymore."
Sugilite continues smashing more pillars, causing debris to fall everywhere and barely misses hitting them. A bit of debris hurls towards them, and Vergil reacts quickly by using his Sword to slash at it, deflecting the debris and knocking it away.
"Watch it!" Pearl yelled at her.
Pearl kicks away another piece of debris heading towards her, but a small rock then hits Steven in the face, knocking him onto the ground.
"Steven!" Pearl exclaims in worry.
"You alright? Agh!" Vergil gasps as he knocks away more debris.
Pearl glares and yells at Sugilite. "Ugh, you're just too much!"
Sugilite replies with a grin. "Maybe you're just too LITTLE!"
"Come on, you two, we're going!" Pearl said decidedly as she picked Steven up and headed toward the Warp Pad.
"What? I'm fine! What about Sugilite?" Steven asked as they stepped on the Warp Pad.
"She can find her own way home!" Pearl said angrily, already upset by the danger Sugilite's recklessness put them in. "Come on, Vergil!"
"Gah!" Vergil was continuously knocking away bits of debris that were flying at him. "You go on! I'll be there in a second!"
"Okay, just be careful!" Pearl instructed him before stepping on the Warp Pad.
"Awww…" Steven moaned dejectedly at not being able to see the destruction play out.
Pearl and Steven warp away as Vergil deflects a large piece of debris and turns around. "Okay, I think it's clear to go now."
Unfortunately, just before he could make his way to the Warp Pad, a huge rock sent flying from Sugilitie's rampage hurled past him and landed on the Warp Pad. Thus destroying it. Vergil just stared at the destruction on his way home and muttered.
"…Aw, nuts."
The next morning, things begin at the Big Donut, where Sadie is behind the counter reading a book, and Lars is sitting at a table eating a sandwich. The door opens, and they both look to see Steven enter the Big Donut wearing sunglasses and a big roll of gauze wrapped around his head.
"'Sup?" Steven said, trying to act tough.
Lars wasn't too interested; Sadie looked genuinely worried for the young boy and ran up to him. "Whoa! Steven, what happened to you?"
"Oh, just a little battle damage from our last mission." Steven replied nonchalantly as he leaned on a table, taking off his sunglasses and putting them on his tank top.
"Really?" Sadie asked, surprised.
"Like what?" Lars asked skeptically.
"I got hit by a rock!"
Steven lifts up his gauze, revealing a tiny cut on his forehead no bigger than a paper cut. Both Sadie and Lars start laughing at Steven's "battle damage".
"It must not have been a very big rock." Sadie said, still chuckling good-naturedly.
Steven covers up the cut in embarrassment. "Well… There's… Internal… Bleeding." He said defensively. "My hurt is on the inside!"
Lars keeps laughing. "Toughen UP, Steven!"
Steven takes his gauze off with a disheartened sigh. "You're right. I'm soft."
"If I weren't so modest, I'd whip out my sweet six-pack." While bragging, Lars struggles to open a can of sardines but is unable to, grunting and sweating while trying. "And show you what… A real man… Looks like…!"
After it proves to be too much for him, Sadie stands at his side with a smile as she offers to open the can. Lars bitterly passes the can to her, and she opens it with ease, returning it to Lars.
"Nah… I'm not gonna say thanks." Lars grumbles and gets punched in the leg by Sadie for it. "Aha…Aha…"
"By the way, where's Vergil?" Sadie asked Steven, finding it odd that the two weren't together as usual.
"Hmm, I don't know." Steven shrugged.
Lars slouched. "What, are you playing hide-and-seek or something?"
Steven shook his head. "No, last night, when we were leaving the mission to go home, he said he'd be back in a second, but he never came back."
"What?!" Sadie now looked genuinely concerned. "Steven, isn't that bad? What if he's in danger?"
"Ah, don't worry about it." Steven waved off her concerns with a smile. "Vergil's been on way more missions than me; he'll know what to do."
At that point, the door to the Big Donut opened again, and they all looked as Vergil suddenly walked in.
"See, what'd I tell you?" Steven said as he walked up to him. "Hey, Ver—"
Steven stopped, and he and the other two gasped when they saw the young half-Gem. Vergil was soaking wet from head to toe. His face had a few bruises on his cheek and eyelid, his sleeves were torn and his gaze looked tired—As though he was ready to fall asleep.
"Hey, guys." Vergil simply greeted them.
"Oh my gosh!" Sadie came up to him worriedly. "Are you okay?"
"Huh, now that's battle damage." Lars commented, actually impressed.
Steven also went up to him. "Vergil? I have several questions. Let me start with—Why didn't you Warp back?"
"All of Sugilite's rampaging destroyed the Warp Pad, so I had to walk home. Fortunately, since I can breathe underwater, it wasn't hard, but everything looks the same underwater, so it took me all night to make it back." Vergil explained before letting out a yawn. "Never found the time to sleep, though."
"But what about the bruises?" Sadie pointed out.
"And where's Sugilite?" Steven also asked, as if that was more important.
"Last time I saw her, she was still smashing stuff. I wanted to talk to her, but she ignored me, and some debris hit me." Vergil answered both of their questions.
"Wait, why didn't you just fly back?" Lars asked, barely following the conversation. "I mean… You can fly right, or am I remembering wrong?"
"I started out flying, but after 20 minutes, my arms got tired." Vergil answered him. "So I walked the rest of the way."
"That's it!" Steven exclaims as stars light up in his eyes. "We all need a workout! Let's do it! Let's work out together!" He points to Sadie. "You can beat up Lars!" Then Vergil. "You can get stronger arms so you can fly longer!" Finally, he points to Lars. "And you don't have to starve to death if Sadie divorces you!"
"We're not married!" Lars snapped.
Vergil's head tilted a bit. "So, you're already divorced?"
"No! We were never together!" Lars exclaimed.
"Could you try and not sound so offended? I'm right here." Sadie annoying reminded him.
"Well, we're still gonna work out! And I know just the guy to help us out." Steven said excitedly.
About an hour later, both hybrids and humans walked to the Beach House. Steven, Lars, and Sadie were in comfortable workout clothes. When they arrived at the beach in front of the house, they found Greg fast asleep on a workbench. All around them was a makeshift gym made out of everything that he could find and use that was already his or in the dumpster. And it still wasn't a lot.
"Wow! This looks great!" Steven said, however, still optimistic. Greg was awakened by the sound of his son's voice and got up. A piece of 2x4 stuck to the side of his face before falling off. "Hey, Dad!"
"Hey, Steven. You like it?" He asked as his son approached him. "It's the best I can do on such short notice."
When Lars and Sadie walked over to join them, Lars picked up a dumbbell made of cans tied by strings to a wooden handle. The thing quickly fell apart within a second of being off the ground. "No kidding." he said.
"Well, I might join you kids to show you how it's done! I've been slacking off on my workout routine for a few weeks… Months… Years…" The other looked at him with raised eyebrows, making Greg cough in his hand. "Decades."
"Sure! The more, the meatier!" Steven welcomed the idea.
"No offense, but I think I'll pass." Vergil said, walking up to the house.
"Oh, come on, we should all work out together!" Steven tried to sway him.
Vergil kept walking as he spoke. "I'm cold, I'm wet, my shirt is ruined, and I never slept last night." He listed before opening the door. "No workouts today!" With that, he went inside and closed the door.
"Ah well, looks like it's just us." Steven told the others before he screamed. "Oh! We'll need sweatbands!"
Steven also runs up to the Beach House. Pearl then arrives and passes by the gym as Greg picks up a real dumbbell.
"Hey, Pearl. Come to check out some buff studs?" Greg asked.
Pearl raised a brow as looked over at Greg. "...…No." She simply said as she walked up to the Beach House as Steven came out with the sweatbands. "Steven, what on earth are you up to?"
"We're starting a gym!" Steven said as he flexed. "Imma get supa strong!" While he talked, Pearl had a happy expression. "Like Sugilite!"
Upon hearing that name, Pearl's happy expression vanished. "You know, maybe this isn't a good idea."
"What? I wanna be strong, so I can be useful to the team!" Steven insisted.
"There are… Different ways of being strong…" Pearl looked away as she informed him.
"But I want to be strong in the real way!" Steven stubbornly stuck to his way of doing things. "Come on, Pearl." He then puts on a sweatband. "Let's get beefy!"
Pearl pouts as she blushes angrily. "I'd rather not." She enters the house.
Pearl sighs as she closes the door behind her before leaning back against it. She then notices clothes scattered across the floor.
"Steven…" She grumbled but relaxed and started singing to herself.
~Why do you have to look up to her~
~Aside from in a literal sense?~
~Don't you know that a power that big~
~Comes with a bigger expense?~
Steven looked inside as she sang and picked up the boy's clothes. Folding neatly. But when she picked up a pair of sunglasses, she was reminded of Sugilite and dropped them.
~And can't you see that she's out of control~
~And overzealous?~
She sees everyone working out through the windows. Steven ducked to the ground. She looked at the others as they were exercising. Pearl stared at the humans.
~I'm telling you for your own good~
~And not because I'm-~
She quickly cut herself before saying "jealous," but knew it was true. Pearl walked over to the window and pulled down the blinds in disapproval.
~I can show you how to be strong~
~In the real way~
~And I know that we can be strong~
~In the real way~
~And I want to inspire you~
~I want to be your rock~
~And when I talk~
~It lights a fire in you~
Determined, Steven turns up the volume of his stereo and yells into his megaphone at the gym.
"Who's ready to get buff?" Steven asked them. "I don't wanna see your gut. I wanna see your guts!"
Steven sees Pearl looking at them from the porch, but she quickly looks away and goes back inside the house. Steven then continues singing "Strong in the Real Way" his own way while instructing and inspiring everyone with the workout. After he stopped singing, everyone collapsed on the ground, visibly tired out and sweating profusely.
"Hey, Steven. Maybe um… You can work out a bit, too?" Sadie suggested through her exhaustion.
"Uh-huh? I have been." Steven said, confused.
"We've been working out. you've just been singing some dumb song." Lars reminded him, irritated as he struggled to lift his body.
"But you're doing a great job pumping us up!" Greg said after catching his breath.
"Thanks! But I need to get strong, too. I'm switching to four-wheel drive!" Steven exclaims as he puts four tires on his body and begins running around.
Back inside the house, just as Pearl finished her song and was holding a laundry basket filled with Steven's clothes, Vergil came out of the bathroom, no longer wet but the same as before, as he walked over to Pearl.
"Pearl?" Vergil addressed her.
The moment Pearl heard his voice, she gasped and dropped the laundry basket. She turned around and saw Vergil standing there. Seeing him, she immediately ran to him, leaned down, and hugged him tightly with great care.
"Oh, Vergil! Oh, I'm so glad you're safe!" Pearl embraced him. Her voice was filled with relief. "I was so worried when you didn't come back, and the Warp Pad stopped connecting to the communication hub."
Vergil patted her back. "I know; I didn't mean to worry you."
Pearl shook her head. "No, I'm just glad you're here now." She then looked at the condition he was in, and her eyes widened. "You're hurt."
"It's just a bruise, Pearl." Vergil assured her, not wanting to worry her anymore.
"What happened back there?" Pearl asked, wanting to know.
"Sugilite got carried away, and the Warp Pad ended up destroyed." Vergil informed her. "I think she just forgot I was there."
At the mention of Sugilite, Pearl let out a fed-up groan. "I am getting really tired of her."
"I know; I could hear your song from the bathroom." Vergil confessed to her.
Like a deer caught in the headlights, Pearl blushed when she heard that. "Oh, you heard all that?"
Vergil nodded. "Yeah, you started with "Look up to her" and ended with "Lights a fire in you"—"
Pearl hastily cuts him off. "Ah, come with me! Let's get you freshened up!"
Pearl took him by the hand and led him up the stairs.
The next day, the sun rose in the morning, and Steven was lying on his bed looking uncomfortable.
"Steven, come on! We're ready to get started! We can't work out without your mad coaching skills!" Sadie's loud voice called out from the beach. Outside the window, you could see her, Lars, and Greg waiting for the young boy.
Steven groaned in pain. "Be there in a sec!" He said to the people outside." He struggled to get off of the bed. The boy had overworked himself yesterday and was now suffering from muscle pains as he struggled to get up. He walked down the stairs. "So sore from getting ripped…"
At the entrance to the temple near the Warp Pad, Vergil and Pearl were talking. Vergil now looked fresh, and his bruises seemed to clear up; he was also wearing a new shirt that looked exactly like his old one.
"Tell me, how did you get back with the Warp Pad being destroyed?" Pearl questioned him.
"I had to walk back through the ocean." Vergil answered truthfully.
"Then how are Garnet and Amethyst going to get back?" Pearl asked. "Considering they still aren't, yet."
"I assume the same way as me?" Vergil guessed.
Suddenly, the ground started to shake, and Greg, Lars, and Sadie's voices could be heard panicking outside, exclaiming about something they were seeing. The house started to rumble, and crumbles fell from the ceiling. Confused, the trio quickly exited the house, with Steven stumbling out. On the balcony, they watched in fear as they saw Sugilite in the distance, marching towards them in the ocean.
"What the hey is that?!" Greg yelled as Lars fell off from the makeshift monkey bars.
"Are you seeing this too?!" Sadie gasped in shock.
Sugilite arrived at the beach, and everyone did. The humans were running away in fear as the fusion let out an infuriated roar that rattled the surrounding area. "I'M BORED!" She roared bitterly.
"It's Sugilite!" Steven cheered. Vergil saw Pearl running past him down to the beach.
"Y-you're back!" Pearl said nervously, approaching the giant fusion.
"YOU LEFT ME BEHIND!" Sugilite accused, pointing at Pearl.
"We just thought you didn't need any help. Now, why don't you separate, and we can all sit down and relax?" Pearl suggested, trying to have the fusion settle down.
"NO! Sugilite suddenly kicked Pearl away.
"Listen to me!" Pearl exclaimed, glaring up at Sugilite as she got up. "You've been fused for too long! You're losing yourselves!"
"I AM MYSELF! AND I'M SICK OF BEING SPLIT UP!" Sugilite proclaimed. "SO YOU BETTER GET USED TO IT, BABY. AND GET THIS JUNK OFF MY BEACH! She then started stepping on the makeshift gym, destroying the handmade equipment.
Steven struggled over to Pearl, and Vergil ran up to her. "Why is she wrecking Dad's gym?" Steven exclaimed, sharing the two's panic. "Why is she attacking you?!"
"Because she's lost her sense of reason!" Vergil figured in a panic.
With no time to explain or argue, Pearl lifted both Steven and Vergil up and tossed them away. "Listen, you two need to get out of here!" She yelled as they fell down a nearby ditch.
Vergil landed on his feet while Steven landed with his stomach down on the ground and was stuck limply. "I… Can't… Move…" Steven moans in pain.
Vergil sits him up. "Fortunately, I still can."
Pearl then summoned her Spear and got into a fighting stance.
"WHAT? YOU WANNA FIGHT?!" Sugilite glared down at the two.
"You'll thank me… LATER!" Pearl yelled and leaped towards Sugilite, but she was quickly swatted away by one of the fusion's large hands.
Greg ran over to the kids. "Come on, kid!" He urgently helps Steven to get up.
"Dad, no! Pearl!" Steven protested.
"Just go!" Vergil advised him, preparing to go. "You can't help if you can't move."
Pearl stands back up and leaps off again, this time managing to knock Sugilite's visor off her face. He was swatted away by her fist as Sugilite grabbed her face, revealing her fierce and angry five eyes, which made the others gasp.
"YOU THINK YOU'RE SOMETHING?" Sugilite roared fiercely, catching Pearl by surprise, and her attack fell apart. "YOU!" The fusion headbutted Pearl to the ground. Pearl landed on her feet, but Sugilite threw her fist up, slamming into the white Gem and sending her flying up into the air. "AIN'T!" Pearl couldn't do anything when the purple fusion jumped up and smacked her into the ground from the sky. "NOTHING!"
Pearl nearly fell unconscious when she hit the ground, though thankfully, her Gemstone was undamaged. She was, however, heavily injured, adding to her despair as she glanced up to see Sugilite land and send her flail at her.
Sugilite then attempts to crush Pearl with her flail but barely misses her when a streak of black dashes past and pulls her away. The impact also sends Steven and Greg flying some distance into the sand and damages the Beach House.
"My muscles!" Steven groaned in pain.
A few feet away, Pearl opened her eyes and saw that she was safe and in the arms of Vergil, who had saved her.
"Vergil?" Pearl muttered.
Vergil smiled and gently set her down. "I'm here, Pearl."
Then Pearl could only stare in horror at the weapon, which was stuck deep in the rocky structure.
She attempted to stand up, but in her weakened state, she kneeled in pain. Steven, Greg, Sadie, and Lars stared at the hopeless situation with fearful worry. Shame overfilled her as she bowed her head, tears falling as she started crying, knowing she'd lost.
"I…I can't do this." The white Gem muttered mournfully as Sugilite approached her. "I'm sorry… Steven, Garnet, Amethyst…" More tears streamed down her face as she tightly grabbed the ground. "Vergil…" she choked out. "I am so sorry… I wasn't strong enough to protect you. I was never strong enough to do anything…"
SLAP!
Before she could go on, Vergil clasped both her cheeks with both of his hands and stood right in front of her with his face right in front of hers.
"What are you saying, Pearl?" Vergil asked her, his eyes narrowed. "This isn't over, and neither are you. You're more than strong enough to stop her. I know you are." He proclaimed, still believing in her.
Pearl just looked down, still tearing up. "Vergil, I… Can't—"
"Look at me!" Vergil interrupted her and lifted her face up. "Who was it who taught me how to use a Sword? Who taught me proper footwork? Who kept me safe on missions? Who gave me everything she had?" He listed down. "Who made me the Gem I am today? It was you, Pearl, it's always been you, and do you know why?" He smiled lovingly at her. "Because you're my rock."
Pearl's eyes widened and lit up as she felt a whirl of emotions going through her, and all she could do was cry some more, but this time, out of happiness, she then wrapped her arms around Vergil and hugged him tightly as Vergil did the same.
Steven hears them while still lying down nearby and tears up a bit himself. "That was beautiful."
After that, Vergil and Pearl separate while still holding each other's arms.
Pearl now looked more determined and had a newfound confidence. "Vergil, let's win this."
Vergil nodded. "Together."
Suddenly, both of their Gems started glowing, followed by both of their bodies. Pearl became a crystal clear light, and Vergil was a mass of darkness as the two whirled together and merged. The light and darkness kept twisting and spiraling around each other, almost forming a Yin-Yang symbol before coming fusing. Two became one, and one created a large explosion burst of light that shot out, blinding everyone.
Once the light cleared, someone new stood there, someone that was neither Pearl nor Vergil.
This Gem stood at the same height as Garnet but was much leaner, having the same build as Pearl and a pale complexion. His hair was slick-back, having a similar hairstyle as Vergil's but had downward spikes. The hair color was grey, while the hairline and outlines were black. He had Vergil's nose and ears with Pearl's eyes and mouth, but the pupils were black. He was wearing a black skin-tight tank top with a white star on the chest and a grey satin sash ribbon wrapped around the waist. He also wore dark grey pants that went down to his caffs and pale-white socks with black slip-shoes.
Everyone was shocked and awed at what they were seeing. Out of everyone who was watching, Steven was the only one who knew what was going on. This new being was the fusion of Vergil and Pearl. The proof is that he had both of their Gems in the same spot they had theirs.
"They fused?!" Steven gasped in astonishment. "What would you even call that?!"
Standing there with brash confidence, this new fusion smiled with his head down.
"WHO ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE!?" Sugilite bellowed, asking the same question.
"You wanna know who I am?" He asked before looking up at Sugilite with a smirk. "I am… Colorless!"
WHOOOSH!
"GAH!" Sugilite let out a grunt as she felt herself get hit in the stomach by a sudden flash.
The suddenness of it made her step back a few steps and become a bit rattled.
"WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!" She shouted angrily.
"That was a greeting."
Sugilite gasped when she heard that voice so close to her and looked to her right to see Colorless standing calmly on her right shoulder.
"I figured I should properly say hello." Colorless taunted.
Sugilite responded by swatting her right shoulder with one of her four arms to try and crush him. However, When she lifted her hand, she saw that he was no longer there and once again stood on the beach.
"I'LL SQUASH YOU!" Sugilite screamed as she attacked.
Colorless didn't seem the least bit concerned as Sugilite kept using her hands to rain down punches at him, and every time she struck, he used his speed to easily evade with so little effort it almost looked like he was teleporting. Until finally, she stopped and saw that he was no longer in front of her. Instead, he was on her right, a moderate distance away.
"WHY CAN'T I HIT YOU!?" Sugilite angrily yelled.
"Hands can't hit what the eyes can't see." Colorless confidently proclaimed. "Even with five eyes, you can't see me."
"RRRRAAAHHHH!" Letting out a roar of pure rage, Sugilite brought up her flail and swung it around before throwing it at Colorless. When it hit the beach, it created another great impact that blew everyone away again and created a large hole in the sand.
But once again, Colorless was gone.
"What's wrong?"
"HUH?!" Sugilite looked up.
Colorless revealed himself sitting down comfortably at the top of the lighthouse cliffside. Another demonstration of his incredible speed was the fact that he made it all the way up there in the blink of an eye.
"Not fast enough for you?" Colorless asked in a relaxed tone. "I can go faster if you want."
"GET BACK HERE!" Sugilite yelled, pointing at him.
"If you insist."
Colorless leaps off the cliff before he suddenly disappears. Then, just as quickly as he vanished, Sugilite found herself being attacked from all sides and all directions by some kind of sealing force similar to blades of wind. It looked similar to Vergil's Tenfold Slash but with much greater speed and numbers, and it didn't require the use of a Sword. After a few seconds, the attacks stopped, and Colorless reappeared, skidding back on the sand.
"Fast enough for you?" Colorless taunted.
"IT!" Sugilite stomped on the sand. "DOESN'T!" She stomped again. "MATTERRRRR!" This time, she roared with so much force that it shook the waves behind her, "IT DOESN'T MATTER EVEN IF YOU HIT ME A MILLION TIMES! YOU'RE SO WEAK THAT I BARELY FEEL A THING!" Sugilite declared, looking down at him. "YOU DON'T HAVE ANY POWER!"
"Is that what you think?" Colorless asked, leaning forward and kneeling a bit. "That's a premature notion, as for having no power—"
WHOOSH!
Colorless dashed forward and closed in on Sugilite. Once in close range, he started running circles around her with speed so great it created multiple afterimages of him, giving off the illusion that Sugilite was surrounded by a ring of rotating Colorless'. Following up on that, Colorless' body started glowing a crystal-like color that coated him and the afterimages, which created a crystal-colored ring around Sugilite.
What resulted from this was the wind picking up around that, which grew stronger and stronger while rotating and creating a concentrated burst of wind that was born from Colorless' running and staying within the confines of the ring. Before long, the wind evolved into a hurricane that Sugilite found herself in the center of.
The strong, vacuuming force of the hurricane was pulling Sugilite upwards, trying to lift her off the ground despite her enormous weight. Sugilite tried to fight it but didn't have any way of doing so and slowly found herself losing her footing and being lifted into the sky by the hurricane. When she was a few stories in the air. Colorless stopped running and appeared in the hurricane as the Pearl on his forward started glowing.
"You should know—" From the Gem on his head, he pulled out Pearl's Spear. "That overwhelming speed—" From the Gem on his chest, he summoned Vergil's Sword. "Can generate—"
He then pieced the two together as the weapons fused to create a Bisento that was as long as his body and had the same grip and pommel as Pearl's Spear, only they were snow-white colored and had the same blade as Vergil's Sword.
"—Overwhelming power!" Colorless loudly finished as he gripped his weapon and threw it up.
After Colorless hurled his weapon upwards at Sugilite, it became surrounded in a black aura similar to arrows from Opal's Bow, and they transmitted their shape into the silhouettes of Pearl and Vergil as they soared through the hurricane and hit Sugilite before it pierced through her body and created a massive explosion that blew away the hurricane and separated Sugilite back into Garnet and Amethyst in a poof of purple cloud.
As the two landed face down on the beach, Colorless looked satisfied at his victory. "My work here is done."
With that, Colorless' body lit up again, and his form melded apart as he unfused himself and separated back into Pearl and Vergil. Two forms of black and white appeared and grew as they turned back into Vergil and Pearl, who now stood together on the beach.
When they were back, they first looked over their own bodies. Then they looked at each other.
"Pearl… Did we just…?" Vergil asked, taken aback.
"We… Fused?" Pearl finished his sentence, just as surprised.
After that, they both just stood in silence for a few seconds before a rush of emotions burst through them both, and they immediately hugged each other while shouting out in both happiness and excitement.
[Haahaaa!] They both let out. [That was/It was just! I didn't even know we could/That felt completely different from!] They both kept talking at the same time in excitement.
While they were doing that, Steven, who was being carried by Greg, went over to Amethyst and Garnet.
"Are you guys okay?" Steven asked them.
"Yeah…" Garnet moaned weakly, exhausted. "Sugilite just overworked our bodies. It's… A little painful."
"I've got a monster headache." Amethyst muttered, too weak to move.
"Well, did you see Vergil and Pearl fuse?!" Steven asked, clearly very amazed by it. "They were like 'Whoosh' and 'Wam,' and they totally blew away Sugilite!"
"Yeah, Steven, we were there…" Amethyst jokingly reminded him. "But yeah, they were pretty awesome."
"I'm so happy for them…" Garnet added, painfully turning over to look at them. "I'd hug them if I could move."
They could see that Vergil and Pearl were still focused on each other and still talking a few feet away. As they continue talking in the background, two-star irises zoom in on Garnet and Amethyst.
"How long do you think they're going to keep that up?" Amethyst asked.
"Let them be. This is something that's special." Garnet said knowingly as if she knew personally how important fusing for the first time was and that it was the most special experience to a Gem.
Another star iris pops over Lars and Sadie as he asks. "Uh… Can someone explain what the heck just happened?!"
Another star iris pops over Steven as he yells over the megaphone. "DROP AND GIVE ME 20!"
And that's the chapter.
That's right, a fusion of Vergil and Pearl. I couldn't resist; they're both so compatible, given their styles, strengths, and weaknesses, and how they both hate their lack of power. I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to fuse, being faced with a different, strong fusion that was a walking mass of brute force and no control and then overcoming it with anything but.
I based their fusion on someone with both of their appearances combined but without color. When Pearl fuses with someone, they have multiple colors, but with Vergil, who has black, which is considered by some as colorless, I gave him multiple shades of colorless to make it unique. And his powers, with their two similar yet different styles coming together in perfect tandem.
Pearl's grace, skill, and finesse mixed with Vergil's sharpness, quick reaction time, and pure speed. Those characteristics fused together to create a style of fighting where the user can dance around their enemies and the battlefield like an untouchable specter. While the fight may have seemed one-sided, that was the point to show how out-of-control Sugilite was and how easy it was to take advantage of that.
Plus, speed is my favorite power of them all, so I'm a little biased sometimes. It's not enough that I don't like power and toughness; speed just looks the coolest to me, so I based Colorless around it.
