Monster Buddies

Today's mission takes place at the Ice Cavern. The first shown part of the cave is a vast room with snow covering the ground. A large gray-blue door is located on a wall. A key feature of the cavern is the sharp, icicle-like formations on the walls and ceilings. There are many blocks of ice that inhibit passage into the deeper parts of the cavern. Further into the cavern are smooth tunnels, narrow crevices, and rooms with towers of round rocks stacked on top of each other.

An overview of an ice mountain is seen when a section of the mountain collapses. The Crystal Gems are inside an ice cavern battling an Ice Monster while icicles fall all around. Everyone is in their usual attire, but Steven is wearing a thick pink coat for warmth.

The Ice Monster possessed a bulky body that was colored varying icy shades of blue. Larimar also possessed two very large arms with four spiky fingers each and two short legs. Her head was carved into five sharp protrusions. She had two dark, hexagonal eyes and a gaping, dark mouth lined with sharp teeth. She was slightly taller than Garnet.

The Ice Monster is knocked backward and crashes into a wall as Garnet, Pearl, and Vergil corner her with their weapons out while Amethyst stays behind with Steven.

"Alright, everyone!" Garnet addresses them.

"One more attack should do it." Pearl surmised.

"Gotta time it just right." Vergil prepared himself.

Suddenly, the cavern started shaking, and icicles fell from the ceiling. An icicle falls on The Ice Monster's arm and impales it, causing it to fall off.

"Yikes!" Steven gasps before reaching for his own arm. "Your arm."

Garnet uses this opportunity to rush in and punch the Ice Monster in the center of her body, causing her to fall down, crumble, and poof into an icy cloud. Her Gem falls from the cloud, and Pearl rushes towards it and catches it before it hits the ground. Then she bubbles it and sends it away.

"Now there's nothing standing between us and the Shooting Star." Pearl noted while looking back at the others.

Unfortunately, the cavern continued to rumble and crumble and was falling apart even worse than a moment again as more icicles and lumps of snow were falling all around them.

"This job is really dangerous!" Amethyst realized as icicles kept falling around her specifically. "Whoaa, Jeeezzz. Whu-Whoa, MAMA!" Before long, she gets buried under a pile of small ice boulders.

"Amethyst!" Steven ran off to her pile. "Uh, don't worry! I'll dig you out."

Amethyst mumbles something unrecognizable to Steven under the pile of ice and snow she was buried in.

"Look out!" Vergil shouted as he pushed Steven out of the way before an icicle fell on him.

Seeing that made Pearl come to a decision. "We've got to get the boys out of here!"

Garnet turns to them. "I'm sending you both back to the temple."

"But Garnet, how are you gonna…" Before Steven could finish, Garnet bubbled Steven up, which greatly surprised him. "You can bubble me?!"

"Yeah." Vergil nodded as Garnet bubbled him as well. "I probably should have mentioned that."

"Garnet, no!" Pearl cried out, obviously not okay with this idea, as she ran towards her. But she was too late as Garnet sent the two bubbled Gem-hybrids back to the temple. "Garnet!"

"Watch your head." Garnet reminds her.

At that point, the Ice Cavern then caves in completely as the whole ceiling collapses, burying the Gems in a sea of rubble and ice.

Steven screams as he and Vergil are warped through the bubble stream. He then appears in a bubble in the basement of the temple, which is the Boiler Room, surrounded by several dozens, if not hundreds, of other bubbled Gems of different shapes, colors, sizes, and types. Vergil appears beside him a second later.

"Whoa!" Steven looks around. "I'm back inside the temple."

"Feeling alright?" Vergil asked him.

"A little; how come you didn't scream while we were warping?" Steven asked.

Vergil shrugged. "I move at superspeed pretty often. It's pretty wonky the first time, but after a while, you get used to it."

"Huh?" Steven then sees the Ice Monster's Gem from before. "Hehehe, look 'atcha now. Stuck in a bubble."

"So are you." Vergil reminded him. "Now then."

Vergil then used the palm of his hand to push against the bubble and opened a hole in it, which made it pop and set him free. He then landed safely on the floor of the room and looked up at Steven.

"Want me to do yours?" Vergil offered.

"Nah, I got it." Steven decided. "Hmmm. Let me see if I can…" Steven tries to push against the bubble as well. "Graaa-yeah!" Soon, he forcefully pulls his bubble open with both of his hands and succeeds in popping it before he falls. "Whoa!"

Steven falls on top of the bubble of another Gem that was beneath him. This causes the bubble to pop, and Steven and the Gem fall to the floor, with Steven painfully landing on his stomach.

"Well, at least you got out." Vergil said, standing over him.

Suddenly, the Gem that was released from its bubble began to glow a bright green color, and then it began to reform itself.

"Oh, man. What's happening?!" Steven asked loudly with concern.

Vergil became urgent and stood in front of Steven. "Stay behind me!"

The regenerating form glows bright and starts to take its form, at first seemingly humanoid, before expanding to glowing into a giant familiar monster with its long body and wide mane.

"Aah! The Centipeetle!" Steven screams in recognition of the Gem.

Vergil brings out his weapon. "Steven, stay close to me!" He ordered him.

The glowing form of the Centipeetle glances at them for a moment, which causes Steven to look away in fear, and Vergil glares his eyes in preparation for the ensuing fight. But it never comes as the Centipeetles form suddenly starts shrinking down and reforming into a smaller version of itself.

After being released from the bubble and regenerating, she appears in an all-around reduced form. Her body is reduced to only two segments, and her mane, head, and cerci have been reduced in size as well. Her Gem now comprises the entirety of her whole eyeball instead of just the iris, and the Gem on her head is now gone. A large amount of droll-like green acid is constantly dripping from its mouth.

Steven and Vergil both looked bewildered at what they were seeing.

"Eh…" Steven uttered.

"Huh?" Vergil muttered.

They see the mini-Centipeetle trembling in fear.

"It looks… So scared." Steven noticed.

Vergil put away his Sword. "It looks like a frightened animal cub."

Steven kneels down and slowly crawls towards it. "Uhh, hi. Ah, it's okay. Look." He lies belly flat on the floor to show he's harmless, but the mini-Centipeetle moves back, still afraid. "Please don't be scared of me. See, I'm not gonna hurt you." Steven promises. "Yeah, just relax." At that point, the mini-Centipeetle begins to calm down.

"I think it's working." Vergil said.

"That's good." Steen happily replied before turning back to the mini-Centipeetle. "Yeah, that's it. Doesn't relaxing feel nice?"

As he spoke, the mini-Centipeetle's mane that was facing upwards was starting to simmer down.

"You wanna come over here and relax with me?" Steven offered, still gently. "Yeah, we can totally just hang out and relax right here on the floor."

The mini-Centipeetle no was completely calm and started crawling toward Steven.

Vergil stayed where he was and watched them. "Hmm, I guess it's harmless."

"Yeah, don't be shy." Steven sat up a bit. "We can be friends." He then reached for its head. "My name's St—"

"STEVEN!"

He was suddenly interrupted as both boys looked up to see Pearl, and the other two arrived at the door to the boiler room, looking horrified at the Gem creature that was only inches away from them.

"Get away from that thing!" Pearl shouted, which spooked the mini-Centipeetle.

"Whoa, dude!" Amethyst gasped as Garnet jumped down.

"Guys, wait!" Vergil shouted out.

"Yeah! It's not—!" Steven attempted to say.

Before either of them could finish, Garnet leaped down and landed between Steven and the mini-Centipeetle as she attempted to punch the frightened creature, which it quickly dodged away. Pearl then jumps to their side.

"This was a terrible idea!" Pearl proclaimed. "And they even managed to pop a bubble and let out that awful…Thing!

Garnet's gauntlets sparkle as she makes a fist and gets ready to attack the cornered Gem-creature again as it backs up against the wall in fear.

Pearl places a hand over Steven and narrows her eyes. "If that thing hurt either you, so help me, I'll—!

Steven shook his head and cut her off. "No! It didn't do anything!"

Steven then gets up and runs in between Garnet and the mini Centipeetle. "Garnet, don't hurt it!" He asked of her as he spread his arms out protectively. "I accidentally let it out of its bubble, but it didn't even try to hurt me. It's not like the other monsters. It's just scared and confused." He explains as the mini-Centipeetle begins to calm down again.

"Garnet, he's right." Vergil told her, stepping forward. "I don't know why, but coming out of its bubble made the Centipeetle take this Qusai-form." He explained. "It can't hurt anyone, and it's helpless. Attacking it like that wouldn't be right."

"Yeah, it wouldn't be right to hurt it the way it is now. Please, Garnet. I'm begging you." Steven pleaded.

There is a dramatic pause as Steven and Garnet stare at each other, making a desperate face until Garnet finally says, "…I can't say no to that face."

Vergil became relieved. "Yes!"

Pearl becomes agasped. "Excuse me?! You can't be serious!"

"I think you should try and tame it, Steven." Garnet went on.

Steven became so happy he ran over to Garnet and hugged her leg with gratitude. "Thank you sooo much."

Pearl frowns at this upset and puts her hands on her hips.

Amethyst laughs at Pearl with amusement. "Shut down by the G-squad! Ahahahaha!"

"Don't be so upset. This'll work out." Vergil assured her.

"Well, let's at least take some precautions." Pearl made a compromise.

"What kind of precaution are we talking about?" Vergil asked.

Everyone moved outside the temple, and they were now on the beach as the sun was setting. Steven stood in front of Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Vergil, and even Lion behind him. Though Garnet and Pearl had their weapons out, and Lion was just sleeping.

"Alright, Steven. Let's see if you can get it to calm down." Garnet said.

In front of Steven was the mini-Centipeetle, which was seen chained to a rock on the beach and growling because of it.

"Um, it still seems a little scared." Steven noticed as it both off one of the chains.

As the chain breaks apart from the rock. The Gems all brace themselves for battle as Pearl and Garnet hold up their weapons, Amethyst moves into a makeshift attack stance, and even Lion gets up and growls at the mini-Centipeetle.

"Stop that." Vergil scolded them, snapping them out of their attacking mood. "How's he supposed to calm it down if you guys keep looking like you're going to attack it?"

"He's right. Maybe you guys could put your weapons away and watch from the house?" Steven suggested in agreement.

Pearl put a hand on her hip. "Absolutely not!" She rejected that idea. "We can't leave you two alone with that thing!"

Garnet, however, complies with their request and dispels her gauntlets. "They can handle it."

"Garnet!?" Pearl said her name in protest.

"Pearl." Garnet said her name before she walked away from the conversation.

Amethyst laughs at her again. "Oh! Hmm, hmm! You just got… Garneted! Ahahahaha!

With that taken care of, the Gems and Lion turn around and walk back to the temple, leaving behind Steven and Vergil with the chained Gem creature.

Steven looks back at the mini-Centipeetle. "Okay, friend. It's just us now." The mini-Centipeetle breaks free from chains as Steven talks to it. "Calm, calm, calm. Just like before. Just relax and let your hair down." Steven lays down in front of it, and the creature slowly begins to calm down again. "You wanna come over here?" Steven holds out his hand, but the mini-Centipeetle jitters on the spot. "C'mon, it won't be like before. How about we try something else?" Steven sits back and reaches into the inside of his coat. "Hmmmm. Oh, what's this?" Steven pulls out a bag of Chaaaaps from his coat as his eyes light up. "Chiiips! You like chiiiiips? You wanna chiipps?"

"Dude, have you been carrying those around all day?" Vergil asked, finding it odd.

Steven nodded excitedly. "I always bring a snack in case I ever need them, like now!" He then opened the bag of Chaaaaps and took one out. "Yeah? Yeah? Awwww, look at this chip! Yum, yum, yum!" Steven eats the chip, which convinces the tiny Gem creature to move closer to the boy. "Mmm, tasty, tasty. Try it!"

The mini-Centipeetle stops in front of Steven and opens its mouth.

"That's it!" Steven takes out another chip. "Smells good, right?" The creature sniffs it before it grabs the chip out of Steven's hand and eats it. "I don't know how you eat with an eyeball in your mouth, but I'm glad you like it."

"It's probably the acid droll." Vergil theorized. "The food just melts in its mouth, kinda like how snakes make their food melt in their stomachs with their acid."

"Cooool." Steven's eyes lit up again as he got up and started back-stepping. He led the mini-Centipeetle with a chip in hand. "Mmm, mmm! Aaah!"

As he holds the chip above his head, a wind blows the chip out of Steven's hand, which the mini-Centipeetle catches and eats.

"Hahahahaha, woohoo!" Steven laughs as he runs over to the path to the Beach House and throws handfuls of chips in the air. "Hey, come on!" The small Gem creature gets near Steven and starts eating chips off the air as Steven sings. "You love chips~ And I love chips~! Hahahaha! Yeah!"

"Careful, don't throw away all of them." Vergil warned him as he got close as well.

"It's okay. There's plenty." Steven assured, not concerned.

It was at that point that Steven held up another handful when a seagull flew by, saw the chips in Steven's hand, and bit his hand, causing Steven to drop the bag in pain.

"Aaah!" After Steven drops the bag, the seagull lands on the beach and starts eating some of the fallen chips, provoking Steven to try and shoo it away." Shoo, get! Those aren't for you!"

Vergil puts a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down. It's just a seagull."

"Well, I don't like it." Steven pointed at it, upset.

The seagull responds by growling at Steven when suddenly a spray of acid splashes in between Steven and the seagull and melts down the bag of chips. Steven turns and sees the mini-Centipeetle approaching them, looking agitated.

"W-What are you doing?" Steven asked, surprised.

The mini-Centipeetle responds by growling at the seagull, and the seagull growls back, which makes the mini-Centipeetle shoot another spray of acid at the seagull again, scaring it away as it flies off. Vergil looked a little uncomfortable as he watched the bird fly away.

"I hope the seagull's all right." Vergil said to himself.

Steven looked directly at the Gem-creature as the iris in his eyes became stars. "You… Saved me."

"Hmm, it's a bit like a cat." Vergil noticed. "As long as you feed it, it'll stay attached to you."

They all head up to the Beach House, where the Gems are gathered and discussing at the kitchen counter, though Amethyst is eating a sandwich.

"…But we have to go back for the Shooting Star!" Pearl reminded them urgently.

Steven opens the door, and the boys enter with the mini-Centipeetle behind them. "Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst!"

Pearl became alarmed when she saw it. Woah, why isn't that thing on its rock?

"I think Steven trained her to do what he says." Vergil informed them.

"Yeah, it's amazing! Look! Squawk!" Steven imitates the sound of the seagull, and the mini Centipeetle reacts by shooting acid at a beam of the house. "Squawk!" Steven does it again, and this time, it shoots acid toward Garnet, barely missing her. "Squawk!"

"Steven, you can't just… Ooh!" Before Pearl could finish, it shoots acid a third time at Pearl, causing the colorful Gem to duck as it hits a picture of Pearl on the fridge, contorting it into a grumpy expression.

Amethyst laughs at these shenanigans. "Hahahaha! That was awesome…"

"Squawk!" Before she can finish, Steven does it again, and his new pet shoots more acid; this time, it knocks Amethyst's sandwich off her hand and onto the floor as it melts.

"Nooooo! Mi tortaaa!" Amethyst shouts in horror as she grieves over her sandwich.

Vergil holds his hand over Steven to stop him from squawking again. "Okay, I think they get the picture."

Pearl looked at the devastation caused by the acid and frowned. "Steven, this is unacceptable!"

"Oh, come on, Pearl." Steven feeds more chips to the mini-Centipeetle and then pets its mane. "She can help us on like missions and stuff."

Pearl immediately crossed her arms. "Oh, no! Out of the question!"

"Awww." Steven looked upset while the mini-Centipeetle was gnawing at the bag.

"Look on the bright side. You can still keep her around the house." Vergil consoled him.

Steven's mood brightened up after hearing that. "Yeah, that's true."

Pearl let out a sigh before looking back at the other Gems. "Well, we can't return to the Ice Cavern now. We have to deal with Steven and his… Situation."

"Well, I dunno how we're getting through that cavern without causing a cave-in anyway." Amethyst reminded her, looking annoyed.

"Hmmm." Garnet gave it some thought before answering. "That's how." She gestures at the creature, whose acid saliva is dripping from her mouth and burning another hole into the wooden floor.

Eventually, the Crystal Gems returned to the Ice Cavern and stood in front of the large pile of ice and rubble that blocked their path.

"I just don't know if this will work…"

"Squawk!"

Before Pearl can finish her sentence, Steven does his trick, which causes the mini-Centipeetle to spit out more acid that creates a hole through the wall that is big enough for them to pass through.

"All right, Centipeetle!" Steven cheered and fed her chips as a reward.

"Looks like we don't need to worry about any more cave-ins." Vergil gladly pointed out.

"Shooting Star, here we come…" Pearl still sounded unsure as they proceeded.

The Crystal Gems proceed to venture through the Ice Cavern, as the mini-Centipeetle helps with her acid spray to overcome any obstacles in their way, including walls, an opening crack to a tunnel that was too small to fit through, and, at some point, they find the remains of a Human-skeleton wearing an explore-hat and holding a pick-ax and rope, this sight slightly disgusted them before they continued their advance.

The Crystal Gems eventually arrive in a room containing the Shooting Star. This room was notably pink in color due to the reflection of the light from the Shooting Star in the water. The star itself resided within a shallow pool of icy water. The Shooting Star is a palm-sized, spiky cluster of pink and blue crystals encased partially in a chunk of ice-like crystal.

[Woah.] Crystal Gems all admired the beauty of the cave.

"Cool!" Steven said in awe as well.

"It's just like the Crystal Cave from Chaotic." Vergil whispered, also mesmerized.

Pearl then looks at the center of the cave where the shallow pool is. "There it is! The Shooting Star!" They all gather around it. "An ancient elemental, so hot and so volatile, it can only be contained in ice." Pearl's eyes lit up, and she slowly trembled with excitement as she whispered. "Bare skin cannot endure its intensity!"

"What do you do with the Shooting Star?" Steven asked curiously.

"Uhh, you shoot it." Amethyst answered like it was obvious.

"Yeah, but why?" Vergil asked, feeling like she didn't really answer the question.

"It doesn't matter why." Garnet chimed in, ending their conversation.

"Garnet, you'll have to use your gauntlets as not to hurt your hands." Pearl instructed her while the mini-Centipeetle walked off to the side of the room unnoticed.

The tall Gem kneels down and summons her gauntlets as she prepares to dip her hands into the pool when suddenly, the mini-Centipeetle starts spazzing out at the sight of the weapons.

Steven sees this and rushes to her. "No, no, no! Not now!"

"What's happening?" Vergil looks over with concern.

Garnet stopped what she was doing and stood up, turning to the small creature. "Something's wrong."

Once it looks at the gauntlets again, it continues to spazz in fear and starts shooting acid all over the ceiling, causing stalactites to fall from the ceiling and around the others.

[Woah!]

Everyone shouted as all of the Gems ducked to avoid the falling stalactites when an eruption occurred from the pool, frightening the Gem-creature even more, causing it to shriek, and this resulted in Steven getting pushed back.

"Steven!" Pearl became alert and stood up as she summoned her Spear. "I knew this would happen!"

"No, don't!" Vergil shouted out.

Pearl takes her Spear and charges toward the mini-Centipeetle, intending to strike at it, while Vergil chases after her as he summons his Sword.

KATCHIN!

Using his speed, he got past Pearl, and Vergil stood defensively in front of the mini-Centipeetle while using his blade to block Pearl's Spear, which surprised the latter.

"What are you doing?" Pearl asked, taken aback.

"I can't let you hurt her." Vergil explained, not happy about this situation.

Steven became frightened at what was happening and ran over to them. "Aaah! Pearl, stop! It was an accident!" He tries to explain as he accidentally pulls the creature's mane, inadvertently hurting it and causing it to growl at him. "Sorry for pulling…"

"Steven!" Garnet moves in as well and goes to kick the agitated Gem-creature.

"No!" Vergil reacts fast enough to grab it before Garnet can reach it and moves it back a few feet to safety.

"Stoooop!" Steven began to tear up at what was happening.

The small creature gets up and growls again as Pearl and now Amethyst as well hold up their weapons and prepare to attack her. Vergil protectively stays in front of her.

"Vergil, move aside!" Amethyst instructed him as she whipped her whip at the creature.

"I won't!" Vergil responds as he uses his Sword to bat the whip away. "Put your weapons away! That's what's making her afraid!" He informed them of his request.

The crack in the giant stalactite continues to worsen as Steven steps in front of the Gems. "He's right; stop fighting. It's only making things worse."

Steven then runs over to his shrieking pet and tries to reach out to her.

"You don't need to fight! This isn't you!" Steven told her as he started crying while the mini-Centipeetle growled at him. "You're not a monster anymore! You're more than that. We have so many memories now! Remember the chip times?" Steven slowly walks towards her, but she backs away in fear. "And how you saved me from that vicious seagull?" Now, she stops backing up but still shrieks. "And how we became best friends?" Steven pulls her in for a hug. "You have to remember! This all happened today!"

Acid drips out her mouth, damaging Steven's jacket, as she finally begins to calm down. But things turned bad as the crack in the giant stalactite finally gave way, causing it to fall toward Steven. As it nears, the mini-Centipeetle shoves Steven out of the way.

"Noooo!"

Stevens cried out as he was knocked into Vergil, and Garnet caught both of them, forcing Steven to see the stalactite fall toward the mini-Centipeetle. The giant stalactite then crushes the mini-Centipeetle in Steven's place as it cries out in pain, and the iris in its eyeball fades to nothing. Vergil looks away while gritting his teeth, while even the other Gems look horrified as Steven gasps in horror. "Noooo!"

The tiny creature let out one last painful groan before the light faded from its Gem, and it poofed into a green cloud. Her Gem then rolled away from the stalactite and stopped in front of Steven, who grieved over her loss. "You saved me." He said in tears.

Garnet caringly placed her hands on his shoulders. "Steven… You did a good job trying to tame the Centipeetle. Your Mother would be so proud."

"She would?" Steven asked, looking up at her.

"The truth is, Rose Quartz had tried to use her powers to save these monsters, too, but she was never able to heal them." Garnet confessed to him.

"Never?" Steven repeated, sounding slightly disheartened. "But if she couldn't do it…"

"Who knows? Maybe when you have better control of your powers, you might help them in ways even your Mother couldn't." Pearl consoled him with a trace of hope in her voice.

"Even this one." Garnet points at Centipeetle's Gem.

"Children are supposed to surpass their parents." Vergil told him, hoping to motivate him. "Now you have something to work towards."

Steven nodded, now less upset. "I'll keep it safe." He holds his hands over Centipeetle's Gem and bubbles it in a pink bubble.

The Gems were surprised when they saw him do that.

"Steven! You can bubble Gems!" Pearl exclaimed in disbelief.

"One step at a time." Vergil encouraged him.

Steven's eyes lit up. "Yeah… Wait for me, Centipeetle. I promise I'll heal you up someday." He then taps the top of the bubble and sends the bubbled Gem away to the temple. "Ooh! Wait!" He reaches for something in his jacket and takes out another of Chaaaaps before he bubbles it as well and sends it to the temple too.

"Why'd you do that?" Vergil asked him.

"Something to feed her when she gets out." Steven answered.

Vergil then looked over to the Gems and became a little distraught. "About before, I didn't mean to point my weapon against you guys; I just really didn't want you to attack Centipeetle, not when it was small and defenseless."

Garnet placed her hand on top of his head. "You don't have to explain; what you did was the same thing your Father would have done if he was here."

Vergil looked up with surprise when he heard that. "Really?"

"Mythril always wanted to defend the defenseless and who use his Sword to fight for the sake of those who couldn't, no matter what or who they were." Garnet told him with care. "Above all, he never wished pain on any living creature like you."

"Woah." Vergil took all this in before he looked at his Gem and put on a small smile. "That explains it."

Back in the Burning Room, the bubbled Centipeetle's Gem reappears, followed by a bag of Chaaaaps in a bubble next to her. Two star-irises, then zoom in on the two bubbles, ending the chapter.

And that's the chapter. This chapter was one I felt like I had to put in this story because the Centipeetle storyline means a lot to Steven, so it only made sense to show the first part of it within this chapter.

We also learn more about Vergil's personality. He's very tolerant of the things around him and would never wish pain on anything that can feel it, neither the Gems, the Centipeetle, or even the seagull from earlier. Even more so, if the being in question can't even defend itself, in that scenario, he would defend it no matter who he facing without exception.

Now, this doesn't mean he's a pacifist. He'll still fight and, of course, hurt others if they're an enemy or a danger to him or those around him, but he'll also be the first one to stop and lower his weapon if he judges that it's no longer necessary or it isn't right. And as Garnet said, this trait he inherited from his Gem parent.
