Alone Together
—…
Things began outside the Beach House. Night had fallen over Beach City, and Vergil was outside, standing in front of the ocean and training in silence. The young Gem stood there with Sword in hand as he swung his blade through the winds. He practiced different katas, keeping his movements loose and fluid, making sure his style remained on point.
Vergil's style of Swordsmanship was sharp but graceful, almost like a Sword dance. He even had his eyes closed as he dove deeper into concentration. Everything around him vanished until the world faded away, and all that remained were the sounds of the ocean tides and the sound of his Sword cutting through the air.
With a final step, Vergil swung his Sword at his right flank, and the air pressure kicked up from his swing, which knocked away a bit of sand like an invisible impact. With that, Vergil slowly lowered his Sword and opened his eyes before he let out a soft breath.
CLAP!
Vergil was caught off guard by the sound of soft clapping nearby and turned around to see Connie standing there and seemingly applauding him.
"Connie?" Vergil blinked.
"Hey, Vergil." Connie stopped clapping and approached him.
"When did you get here?" Vergil asked.
"Not that long ago, I saw you practicing, and I didn't want to interrupt." Connie said before she looked away bashfully. "That was really cool, the way you were moving, I mean. It's like you were dancing."
"That's the idea." Vergil replied with a smile. "My style is at its best when my movements are light and fluid, so my footwork and defensive moves look as graceful as a dance. Pearl taught me the basis of this style, and the rest, I learned on my own."
"Well, I think it looks really great." Connie complimented him sincerely. "By the way, where's Steven?"
"He's inside with the Gems." Vergil pointed at the Beach House. "He wanted to learn about fusion, so they're teaching him how to fusion dance. Since I already know it, I decided to train on my own."
"Can you call him down?" Connie requested.
"Sure thing. Wait here." Vergil made his way toward the house.
Inside the house, the Gems were teaching Steven how to dance.
They tried several different matchups and different types of dances, hoping he would get it, but all of them seemed to be of no avail. Steven tried dancing with each of the Gems individually but couldn't sync up with any of their styles. He also tried watching them dance with each other but clearly knew he couldn't match their movements as they seemed beyond what a human child could be capable of. He didn't have Pearl's balance and grace, Amethyst's limberness or flexibility, or Garnet's body control or sheer height.
In the end, the Gems try to dance in unison with Steven. They snapped their fingers in rhythm; Steven was a bit offbeat. The Gems each put one foot forward; Steven put forward his hand. The Gems ran in unison and exited stage right; Steven ran in the wrong way, quickly turned around, and tried to catch up with them. The Gems slide, leap up, and pose in midair together; Steven tried to jump and pose as well but quickly fell to the ground.
After that, all of the Crystal Gems walked toward the kitchen to take a break while Steven was carrying a towel around his neck. "I don't get it. I thought I almost had it."
Pearl sat beside the kitchen counter. "Nobody expects you to be able to perform fusion right away, Steven."
Amethyst hopped and sat on top of the counter. "Yeah! It's really hard, even for us."
Garnet leaned against the cabinets and spoke with confidence. "Not for me."
"We'll keep working on the dance for now, and who knows, in a few years…" Pearl trailed off before she paused and pondered the subject. "I wonder, though, if Steven's body is capable of Fusion. Fusion merges the physical forms of Gems, but Steven is half-human. He's organic."
"Organic?" Steven repeated, not knowing what she meant.
"Aw, come on! It's Steven!" Amethyst spoke somewhat mockingly. "Who knows what's gonna happen?" She then laughed heartily.
"But Vergil's half-human and he could fuse just fine." Steven pointed out, not knowing what the problem was.
"Well, you and Vergil aren't exactly the same in that regard…" Pearl looked away, not wanting to talk about it.
"Well, I think Steven can do it." Garnet looked over at Steven with complete faith.
Steven looked back up at Garnet with a worried expression. That was when Vergil entered the house. "Hey. Let me guess, not much progress?"
Steven let out a sigh. "No, my dancing was no good."
"Steven, it takes a while for even normal humans to learn how to dance, not to mention Gems have been doing it for thousands of years. This is your first day." Vergil reminded him passively. "It'd be strange if you did get it right."
"Yeah, I guess." Steven couldn't deny his common sense.
"By the way, Connie is outside. She wants you to come down." Vergil informed him.
"Oh, right." Steven quickly perked up and for the door. "See ya guys!"
"Wait up." Vergil followed after him.
Now, back outside on the beach, Steven, Vergil, and Connie were sitting in the sand, facing each other. Steven and Connie removed their shoes, but Vergil kept his on, and so Steven's flip-flops, Connie's flats, and Connie's glasses were left a few feet away.
"Can you get them to write out the steps?" Connie asked after Steven informed her of his inability to properly Fusion Dance.
"No… I don't think it's just about the dancing. When they fuse, they glow and kind of…" Steven tried to explain it by crossing his fingers together. "Phase into each other. I don't know if I can even do that."
"You're focusing on the wrong thing." Vergil informed him. "All you need to fuse is a Gem. That's the bottom line. You have one, so you also have the ability to fuse."
"Then how come I couldn't?" Steven asked.
"Well, as Amethyst and Pearl demonstrated, you don't need to be best friends. As long as you're focused on fusing, it'll work. And as I demonstrated, even if you're a half-Gem, it'll still work, so the problem is simple: you can't dance." Vergil answered as though it was apparent. "To specify further, you don't know how to dance with someone bigger than you. Garnet and Pearl are too tall for you to dance with, so you can't sync up with them. You can't fuse if you're not in sync."
"What about Amethyst?" Connie pointed out. "They're the same size; can't they fuse?"
"The problem with that is Amethyst is too unpredictable and sporadic." Vergil reasoned. "Even I'd have trouble syncing up with her. She only fuses well with Garnet because she follows Garnet's lead."
"Ah, that means I can't fuse with anyone." Steven lamented. "Why was I cursed with such short legs?"
"Well, I think it's amazing you guys are able to dance with them at all." Connie admitted. "I could never do that."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Steven asked curiously.
Connie looked away before confessing. "I've never danced in front of anyone before."
"Really?" Steven asked, surprised.
"Yeah. There was a dance at my school, and I was really excited about it… But I just couldn't bring myself to go." Connie remembered it without fondness. "I just couldn't stop thinking about everyone staring at me."
"That's pretty common; a lot of people have anxiety when it comes to public things like talking or dancing in front of others." Vergil explained. "It's even worse when everyone's doing it, so you feel like you have to. You feel a lot of pressure and worry you might mess up."
"Yeah, I was afraid I'd do something bad in front of everyone, and the idea scared me so much that I couldn't bring myself to go." Connie rubbed her arm and sighed. "I know I was probably worrying too much, but I just don't think I can dance in front of others."
"Well… No one's staring right now?" Steven pointed out.
But, contrary to what he just said, Connie saw that Steven was staring right at her only a few inches away and with his eyes as wide open as possible. "Um… You are."
"Oh… Yeah." Steven looks away while blushing. "Oh, one sec."
Steven reached into his pocket, pulled out his smartphone, tapped it a few times, and stuck his phone in the sand. An instrumental song started to play. Steven walked away a few steps away from Connie and covered his eyes with his arm.
"So, what I was trying to say was…" Steven offered his other hand to Connie, still blushing. "Come dance with me."
Connie hesitated for a moment, then reached for Steven's hand. Steven lifted his arm off his eyes and smiled. He then pulls Connie toward him, and they begin to dance. Their dance wasn't anything special; they just held hands and stepped back and forth to the tune of the song. Steven then twirled Connie around and started to do a little jig on his own. Connie also does her own dance solo. Vergil watched them both and chuckled a bit. The amusement of the whole thing was contagious. Steven and Connie then ran around carefreely when they bumped into each other. Steven started to fall, but Connie quickly caught him. They both stopped as the music continued in the background, and they stood there staring into each other's eyes as they blushed together. When they moved again, Connie leaned closer and laughed heartily, and Steven's Gem began to glow, enveloping the whole section of the bink in pink light.
"What the—" Vergil breathed out before the light enveloped him.
A mysterious person slowly wakes up on the beach, revealing rosy-brown legs, in front of Steven's flip-flops and Connie's flats and glasses.
This person was taller than Amethyst and Pearl but was a few inches shorter than Garnet. They have an average/athletic build consisting of Connie's slim figure with Steven's chubby and stocky features, curly black hair that reaches to their thighs, and a complexion slightly darker than Steven's.
As this person's blurry vision started to clear, they tried to find the wherewithal to make sense of everything. "Whoa. Why am I—?" Their hand reached forward and picked up Steven's flip-flop. "Why is…Your sandal too small for my- your feet?"
They then ran their hand along their legs, hips, and stomach. Finally, they noticed Vergil beside them. The look on his face was one of shock and utter disbelief, as though he couldn't comprehend what he was looking at.
"Wh-what's wrong?" They asked, never having seen Vergil look so thrown off before.
"S-Steven… Connie? Is that you?" Vergil asked, still trying to wrap his head around what he was seeing.
"Wha?" The truth dawned on them: this person was a fusion of Steven and Connie. The fusion grabbed their hair in shock as everything became clear. They looked down at their body and saw Steven's Gem. "I- I did it! You did it?" It was like watching someone have a conversation with themself as they struggled to get up. "Wait. Ugh, this- no. This is gr-great!" The fusion succeeded in standing up and examining themself. "Oh my gosh, look at you now! They stood tall and pointed their head up at the sky. "I'm a fusion."
The merged Steven and Connie then threw their hands up in the air and began to run around the beach, laughing.
Vergil watched them frolicking around and started to make sense of all this. "I think I get it. In theory, a Gem with an organic body can't fuse with other Gems made only of physical light, but in actuality, not only can an organic Gem fuse with other Gems, but they can also fuse with other organic creates." Vergil connected all the dots with excitement as though he discovered an incredible breakthrough. "Half-Gems can fuse with both Gems and humans. This is incredible! This goes beyond unprecedented; it's revelational! Guys, you're revelational!"
Vergil called out to them as they were still running around. His yell caused them to look away, and they tripped and fell behind a rock but quickly got up with only one thing on their mind. "I have to show everybody."
As they returned to the Beach House, The Gems gazed in shock and surprise as the fusion now stood confidently in front of them.
"Pretty cool, right?" They presented themself.
Pearl stared wide-eyed with a hand over her mouth. "He fused? With his friend Connie?"
"I was surprised too, but it turns out it's possible for half-Gems." Vergil explained.
Amethyst chuckled and leaned to Pearl as she whispered. "Pearl, look at Garnet."
Pearl turned and saw the source of her amusement was the fact that Garnet stood there with her hands clasped together and had a huge grin on her face as though she was looking at something truly spectacular.
Pearl then looked back at the fusion and approached them.
"This is unprecedented." Pearl started to examine all around their body. "A Gem fusing with a human being…? It's impossible!" Finally, she looked away, cupping her face with her hand. "Or, at the very least, inappropriate."
"You're wrong, Pearl. This opens the door to a world of possibilities." Vergil exclaimed with enthusiasm. "Half-Gems didn't exist before me and Steven, so Gems fusing with humans was never possible because you needed both a Gem and a physical human body. Since we have both, it's possible for us to fuse with both species. Not just Connie, you could potentially fuse with any human on earth."
"Uh…" Pearl didn't exactly see that as something to be excited about. "I suppose…"
Amethyst approached them, too. "Wow! You two look great together! How does it feel, Steven? Connie? …Stevonnie?!" She finally named them.
"Stevonnie, of course." Vergil snapped his fingers. "Every fusion needs a name."
"It feels amazing!" Stevonnie answered joyfully.
Now Pearl was getting really uncomfortable. "Yes. Well, I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves, but you two should unfuse this instant."
"Wait, what? Pearl, you were so worried Steven wouldn't be able to do this. Aren't you proud of him?" Stevonnie seemed genuinely upset.
"Of… Course I am! I—" Pearl honestly didn't know how to handle this unorthodox situation, so she turned to Garnet in worry. "Garnet, help me out here."
"Stevonnie…" Garnet walked up to Stevonnie while Amethyst and Pearl backed away. "…Listen to me." She placed her hand on Stevonnie's cheek. "You are not two people. And you are not one person. You… Are an experience!" She exclaimed with more certainty than ever. "Make sure you're a good experience. Now… Go!… Have!… Fun!" She finished with a wide grin.
Stevonnie took those words to heart and dashed out the door with a rush of excitement and emotion. After they were gone, Vergil looked up at Garnet. "Wow, Garnet, I didn't know you could be so passionate."
"I'm always passionate when it comes to fusion." Garnet said with a hint of pride.
"I see…" Vergil looked back at the open door that Stevonnie ran out of and started to look a light concerned. "Uhh… I should probably go after them and… Make sure everything's okay."
With that, Vergil also dashed out the door, intending to follow after his fused friends.
After leaving the Beach House, Stevonnie was seen running across the shoreline of the beach with determination while the ocean seemed to twinkle bright lights as the stars reflected against the surface. They then start to sprint, grinning widely, and perform a string of cartwheels toward the edge of a high cliff. Stevonnie peeked over the edge of the cliff and then jumped off of it into the ocean, screaming excitedly. They float back to the beach shore on their back, alternating between Steven's and Connie's laughter.
Vergil followed and remained nearby, behind them from a short distance, using his wings to keep up. After running around, Stevonnie's stomach then began to grumble. They sat up and saw the Big Donut nearby, and so they made their way to the establishment.
Inside the Big Donut, Sadie and Lars were in the middle of a conversation behind the counter. Lars was smiling; Sadie was not. As they kept going back and forth, talking about basically nothing, the shop door chimed, and a drenched Stevonnie walked into the shop. Sadie and Lars both stare at Stevonnie with wide eyes as they walk up to the counter.
As Stevonnie approached, Lars started blushing and stuttering, unable to remain calm when faced with them. "Ha- ha- how can I- help… Me?"
Stevonnie didn't notice his babbling. He flicked their hair gracefully and started squeezing it dry. "Two donuts, please."
Sadie and Lars continued staring in awe. It was like they were staring at a supermodel or a figure from a dream. Lars reached into the donut case and pulled out a bag of two donuts, placing it on the counter, never taking his eyes off Stevonnie. Stevonnie then pulled out some bills and coins from their pocket and inches closer to the counter toward Lars.
"What do I owe you?" Stevonnie asked.
Lars was still blushing and stammering. He thought he saw lights gathering between the two of them. "Uh- ah- uhhhh—"
Sadie suddenly slammed her palms on the counter. "Oh, nothing!" She exclaimed frantically before she gently pushed Stevonnie's hand aside and looked away, blushing like a maiden who was smitten. "It's on the house."
"Really?" Stevonnie asked incredulously.
[Mmm-hmm.] Sadie & Lars nodded their heads in unison.
"Okay." Stevonnie shrugged and grabbed the donut bag from the counter before turning away to leave. They then pause at the doorway. "But just so you know—" They looked back at Lars and Sadie over their shoulder with a gaze and tone that was almost sensual. "—That isn't a very sound business practice."
Sadie and Lars keep staring at Stevonnie, startled, wide-eyed, and mouths hanging open, as though they had become statues. The shop door chimed as Stevonnie closed the door behind them and walked out.
During that encounter, Vergil watched through the glass windows and heard the whole conversation, not to mention seeing Lars and Sadie's reaction to meeting the fusion.
"Huh, I guess Stevonnie is greatly attractive in the eyes of both males and females." Vergil noted that before he thought about what that meant. "I don't think I have the heart to tell them that was really Steven and Connie, especially Lars."
After leaving the Big Donut, Stevonnie walked along the boardwalk, reaching into the donut bag.
"Sweet, two doughnuts! One for me and one… For… uh, me…" Stevonnie paused in front of a wooden bench and looked back in uncertainty as though they had forgotten that they were a singular existence right now. They look down at the pair of donuts in their hands, holding them side by side.
"Are you okay?" The Connie in Stevonnie asked as they pulled the donuts apart, and their awareness started to darken a bit. "We can stop if you…"
The Steven in Stevonnie put the donuts back side by side as though to reassure themself. "No, no. Don't worry."
Stevonnie sat down on the bench, crossed their legs, and started eating a donut. It was then that Sour Cream appeared and approached them.
Stevonnie looked up and smiled at a familiar face. "Oh hey, Sour…" They stopped themself when they remembered Sour Cream had never met Stevonnie before. "…Faced stranger." They put the donuts down. "Wow, cool pants!"
"Cool." Sour Cream responded while uncharacteristically looking away nervously. "Rave tonight." He handed Stevonnie a flyer.
Stevonnie took the flyer. "Like, a dance?" They asked with interest.
Sour Cream started blushing. "Yeah, at the warehouse. I'm DJ-ing, and a bunch of my friends from the internet are gonna be there. There's gonna be free….… Glow sticks…?" He explained while flustered.
"Yes!" Stevonnie stood up with excitement. "I'll definitely be there! Yes. Thanks!" They walked off.
Sour Cream stayed behind while still flustered. "Cool."
Vergil was still watching and went after Stevonnie while looking back at Sour Cream. "Wow, Sour Cream too? I thought nothing could phase him. Stevonnie's charm is greater than I thought."
Stevonnie walked up a grassy hill at the end of town to make their way to the warehouse and took a moment to scope the rave at the partially collapsed wall. Several people were already dancing while DJ Sour Cream was playing chiptune rave music on a platform. Ronaldo was seen free-styling while an unknown man watched, leaning against a wall and looking bored.
Jenny and Buck were also seen dancing. DJ Sour Cream adjusted his music equipment, which included a soundboard, a keyboard, and three handheld video game consoles similar to Game Boys. It transitioned the music into an upbeat song. The crowd cheered in response.
Stevonnie, still hanging at the partially collapsed wall, put on a brave face and stepped into the warehouse. Everyone quickly paused and turned to look at Stevonnie as they passed by. Stevonnie walked up next to Jenny and Buck and began to dance. Jenny and Buck stopped dancing too and backed away, letting Stevonnie be as they did their dance solo.
Sour Cream watched Stevonnie dancing. "I'm amazing…" He muttered to himself as he added a sweet descant to the music.
Stevonnie had an inadvertent yet graceful dance solo by twirling, knee-sliding, and flipping their hair. They end their dance by launching themselves, twisting in the air, and landing with a satisfied sigh. Vergil remained outside and watched them through the partially destroyed wall.
"I guess I was worrying too much; they don't need my help after all." Vergil decided with a bit of relief. "Well, might as well let them have their fun."
Vergil turned away and departed from the warehouse, unaware of what would unfold moments later.
After leaving Stevonnie, Vergil returned to the beach and practiced his Swordplay just like before Connie showed up earlier. His moves were as focused and on point as they were before, perhaps even more so.
Vergil focused on his precision more than anything. It was as though he was trying to use his Sword with the same precision one uses to thread a needle. After a while, he stopped and lowered his Sword.
"It's still not enough. I'm getting closer, but it still feels out of reach." Vergil placed his weapon back in his Gem. "Still, I'll get there someday."
Now that he was done training, Vergil walked off of the sandy beach and onto the boardwalk as he made his way to a nearby store.
As Vergil approached the store, he headed for the vending machine outside so that he could get a drink. As he got there, he heard a banging noise. When he went around the corner and arrived at the vending machine, he saw that the source of the banging noise was a person kicking against the machine. It was the unknown man from the rave.
The person was a man who had short dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He wore a reddish-brown jacket over a magenta-red shirt with a white stripe down the middle, along with a white infinity scarf. He also wears dark-teal skinny jeans and short boots (the same color as his jacket). Additionally, he is about the same height as Stevonnie. He appears to have light brown skin, suggesting that he is non-white or mixed race.
The man kept kicking against the vending in a huff. "Stupid machine."
Vergil decided to approach the man. "Need some help?"
He stopped and saw Vergil and looked miffed before turning away. "No, leave me alone." It seemed he was already upset by something and was taking out his annoyance on the machine. "Piece of junk ate my dollar."
Vergil could tell what had happened. This vending machine was faulty, and sometimes, when you put money in it, the machine would fail to spit out the canned drink you had paid for. Being used to this sort of thing, Vergil knew a trick to deal with it.
Vergil stopped the man from kicking before he went to the right side of the machine, held it steady with his arms, and then kicked it hard in the center. The result was that two canned drinks were now knocked out of the vending machine. Vergil picked them both up and offered one to the man.
He just stared for a moment before he sighed and took the can. "Thanks."
After that, he walked to a nearby wooden bench and sat down as he opened the can and drank some of the drink. Vergil went to the bench as well and sat across from him. "So, what's up? I'm guessing it wasn't just a faulty vending machine that made you so upset?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." He lowered his gaze and rested a hand on his brow. In spite of what he said, he clearly did want to get his grievances off his chest as he paused for a bit before he let out another sigh and spoke. "There was a rave going on tonight, and I was there until a little while ago. The whole thing was lame; I barely stopped myself from blowing the whole thing off. But then, someone new showed up. I'd never seen her before."
"Is he talking about Stevonnie?" Vergil wondered before asking out loud. "Was this person tall, with long puffy hair, and not wearing shoes?"
"Yeah, you saw her?" He asked, a little surprised.
"I saw them heading up the hill to the old warehouse." Vergil replied, taking another sip of his drink.
"Well, that's where the rave was." He went back to his story. "Aside from me, she was the only person there who knew how to dance. All eyes were on her; she was like something you wouldn't believe. Or so I hoped." He groaned and lowered his gaze again. "When I tried to get her to dance with me, she turned out to actually be two kids on top of each other or something."
"They unfused?" Vergil deduced what had happened. "I guess I understand his issues. Seeing that happen without knowing about Gem stuff can be a total mind-freak."
"After that, I just got the heck out of there as fast as I could. I wanted to get a drink and clear my head, but the stupid machine wasn't working." He finished his story as he leaned forward, resting his head against the bench. "This night royally sucked."
"Well, it's not all bad." Vergil attempted to console him. "Look on the bright side."
"Gah, what bright side?" He scoffed with narrowed eyes. "What bright side could there possibly be?"
"Nothing that happened affects you. You're still the same guy. You're tall, thin, handsome, a good dresser, and a pretty top-notch dancer, as you told me." Vergil told him sincerely.
"I…" He paused and looked up, looking much less upset than he was a second ago. "Yeah, you're right; I am all those things." He didn't hesitate to accept his own praise.
"And when you get down to it, this was just one bad night. Everyone has them." Vergil continued to appease him. "Tomorrow morning, when you wake up, this'll just be a bad experience that you can put behind you."
"Yeah, you're totally right." He now stood up. It seemed he was completely over all that was bothering him now. "It was just a bad night; I don't need to worry about it. Thanks, kid. I feel better now."
"You're welcome, uh…?" Vergil had just realized that despite talking for a while, he didn't actually know this man's name.
He realized what the issue was and introduced him. "Kevin."
"Vergil." Vergil responded by giving his own name.
"Hmm." Kevin nodded in response and stuffed his hands in his pockets before he turned around and walked away. "Later."
"Later." Vergil watched him walk away before he finished his drink and got up as well. He then threw his can in a trash bin and walked away in the opposite direction as Kevin.
After parting ways with Kevin, Vergil returned to the Beach House. When he entered inside, he saw that Steven and Connie had already returned before him and truly had been unfused. They were by the fridge when Steven saw Vergil by the door.
"Vergil!" Steven ran up to his friend, and they met in the middle of the living room. "Where'd you go?"
"Oh, you know, here and there." Vergil shrugged. "And I see you two stopped being Stevonnie."
"Yeah, we kinda unfused at a dance party." Connie answered somewhat timidly.
"It was awesome. It felt really weird but really good at the same time." Steven exclaimed as he and Connie remembered the rush of euphoria.
"Sounds like you both had quite the night." Vergil noted.
"Well, it wasn't all good." Steven frowned as he thought back. "There was this guy we met at the party; he was a real jerk."
"A huge jerk." Connie agreed completely.
"That's a shame. Speaking of which, I also met someone new." Vergil informed them. "We only talked for a bit, but he seemed pretty cool."
"Really, did you make a new friend?" Steven asked, sounding pleased again.
"Well, I'd like to think so." Vergil looked at the window where he could see the stars. "I hope I see him again."
And that's the chapter.
I'm sure not many of you were expecting the direction this chapter took. As I said before, Vergil and Steven are parallel to each other, and therefore, not only do they see things differently, but when placed in similar situations, they can have opposite responses, which can show itself in one of them liking someone that the other doesn't like. Steven has friends that Vergil doesn't care for, so it stands to reason Vergil would have some that Steven doesn't like—An example being Kevin.
