Future Vision
—…
The day began inside the Beach House as Steven was about to do some spring cleaning in his room.
Steven brought in an empty box and spoke to the action figures in his room. He put his hands on his hips and addressed them in a serious manner. "Okay, everyone. I think we all know what's going on here. I'm sure you knew this day was coming sooner or later."
There were three action figures beside his bed—A toy of the character Cloud from Final Fantasy, a Sonic the Hedgehog figure, and an orange robot figurine.
"I understand your concern, but that language was inappropriate." Steven acted as though they could speak. " I'm a Crystal Gem; I'm a big boy now. And I got to stop saying stuff like, "I'm a big boy now.". He repeated while briefly making a cute pose to emphasize his point.
"I'd rather you stop talking to yourself like that." Vergil spoke out as he came upstairs. "I don't see why you have to get rid of your old stuff. Keeping old toys even after you grow up never hurt anyone; just look at Toy Story."
"Maybe, but I feel it's time for a change." Steven started putting his action figures into the box as he responded. "Honestly, this is tough, but I'm trying to be positive about this." He then looked at his wall and saw his "Ninja Squad" poster. "Man, I guess I can't be in the Ninja Squad anymore. Get out of my life, Ninja Squad!" He hastily took down the poster and replaced it with a new one that said "New Ninja Squad." "Yeah! New Ninja Squad!"
"That's just gratuitous." Vergil sighed.
Steven finished his spring cleaning and prepared to leave with a box full of old belongings. "Mm. That's everything for now. Hmm?" He looked down and saw M.C. Bear Bear on the floor and picked it up. "Oh. Master of Ceremonies Bear Bear." He talked to it sadly. "I guess… I should get rid of you, too."
"I still don't think you should." Vergil urged him. "If you're unsure about it, it's better to keep him around.
Steven smiled again at the bear in his hand. "Yeah, I guess you're right. After all, you never know when I'll need a cool DJ for a fun party, right?
Steven started climbing down the steps of his room when he accidentally stepped on a tennis ball. He tripped and got flung into the air. He screamed as he fell, only to be caught by Garnet at the bottom of the steps.
"Uh…" Steven opened his eyes and saw the tall gem. "Garnet!"
Garnet smiled at him. "Good morning to you, Steven."
"Wow, nice catch." Vergil admired as he walked down the stairs.
"You got that right; I sure am lucky you showed up when you did." Steven mused.
Garnet put Steven down. "Luck's got nothing to do with it." She told him as she adjusted her visor.
"Wait. What do you mean by that?" Steven asked playfully as he kneeled down and started picking up all the belongings spilled from the box.
Garnet kneeled down, too, to help Steven. "Don't worry about it."
"No, seriously. How do you always know where to be?" Steven persisted.
"You know we'll keep asking until you tell us." Vergil added as he kneeled down as well.
"Mmm. You're right; I do know that." She smiled and handed M.C. Bear Bear to Steven. "But I don't think you can handle that information."
"Are you gonna tell us something cool about yourself?" Steven smiled excitedly.
"Nope." Garnet answered right away.
Steven frowned in disappointment. "Aw, come on. I'm a b-… Large… Man, now."
"And I already have a pretty good idea of what it is." Vergil told her before voicing his prediction. "Do you have the power of clairvoyance?"
"Hmm, that's not too far off…" Garnet praised him before she answered. "I guess you could say I have a sort of… Future Vision." She revealed as her visor sparkled. "I'm able to see possible outcomes to most situations, which comes in handy since you seem to attract a lot of danger."
Steven smirked at that remark. "Well, danger is my middle name.
"That's a lie." Garnet argued. "Your middle name is cutie-pie." She booped Steven's nose.
"Haaa!" Steven smiled and stuck out his tongue playfully as though his nose was a buzzer.
"Can my middle name be Greatest Gem?" Vergil requested, hopefully.
"No." Garnet shook her hand before she lovingly brushed her hand against his cheek. "Your middle name is Sweetest Gem."
Vergil smiled softly at her and shrugged. "I guess that works too."
Later on the Beach, Garnet and Steven were seen working out on the beach in rhythm to a stereo playing an exercise track similar to the Korean National Gymnastics track, for some reason. Vergil decided not to join them and just watched from the side.
The Stereo played in Korean. {Let's exercise! Cha! One... two!... Two... two!... Three... two!... Four... two!... Five... two!... Six... two!... Seven... two!... Eight... two!...}
Garnet then summoned her gauntlets while Steven picked up a pair of dumbbells, and they continued some weightlifting exercises.
{Continue! One... two!... Two... two!... Three... two!... Four... two!... Five... two!... Six... two!... Seven... two!... Eight... tw-}
Garnet finally raised her gauntlet and smashed the stereo, ending the workout by force.
"Okay, we're done." Garnet decided.
"To this day, I still don't know why you choose the Korean workout station?" Vergil noted as he picked up the broken stereo.
Steven put his dumbbells down in slight dismay. "Wait, the day still has so much potential!" He insisted. "Garnet, what are my breakfast possibilities?"
"Well, you're already outside, so you'll probably go to the Big Donut." Garnet predicted.
"Wow… That's amazing." Steven breathed out.
"What? I could have predicted that." Vergil pointed out, not as impressed. "Can't you think of something more concrete?"
"Okay…" Seven scratched his head, trying to think of something while Garnet dispelled her gauntlets. "Um, do you see any possible futures where you, um, come with me and have a great time?"
"Hmm…" Garnet stayed silent and glared at Steven, who stared at her with starry eyes, wiggling his eyebrows all around while chiptune music whirled in and out. Finally, Garnet adjusted her visor and answered. "Yes."
Steven gasped in surprise. "Really?!" The surprise quickly became joy. "Then let's go!"
Steven grabbed Garnet by the hand and strolled down the beach with her. Vergil sighed at the notion that Steven was missing the point and followed. "His standards are too low."
As the three of them walked down the beach, Steven asked more questions. "So, can Pearl and Amethyst see the future, too?"
"No one can see the future." Garnet started explaining her ability as imagery projects on her visor. "I can see options and trajectories. Time is like a river that splits into creeks, or pools into lakes, or careens down waterfalls." She adjusted her visor as the imagery disappeared. "I have the map, and I steer the ship."
Steven looked dumbfounded; that explanation was obviously too complicated for him to grasp. "I see…"
Vergil on the other hand, had a look of clarity. "I get it; when you have multiple choices, each with varying outcomes, you look ahead to see what each outcome will be and proceed down the path you feel is the best choice."
"Correct." Garnet nodded.
"Wow, you got that?" Steven was impressed again.
"Yeah, it's real similar to how it works in Future Diary." Vergil reasoned. "It's one of those shows that Pearl says I'm not old enough to see, but I see it anyway."
"How is it?" Steven asked.
Vergil shrugged. "It's pretty good, but the main character stinks."
Before long, they arrived at the Big Donut. The shop door chimed as Garnet opened it for Steven to enter, with Vergil following behind. Inside, Sadie was working by the soda machine while Lars was holding a pot of coffee.
"So, what would happen if I said "hi" to Sadie?" Steven asked again.
"The most probable outcome is that Sadie will say "hi" back." Garnet answered.
"Hmm…" Steven pondered for a bit before he tried it. "Hi, Sadie!"
Sadie turned around and noticed him. Oh, hi, Steven. Hi, Vergil."
"Steven, these are all pretty straightforward outcomes." Vergil reminded him. "I seriously doubt you needed future vision to see that one coming."
Steven laughed and turned to them. "Oh, you're right, that was an easy one. What would happen if… I said "hi" to my BFF, Lars?!" He pointed to Lars by the coffee machine. "Our friendship is deep but complicated. So the outcome of this experiment is waaaay unpredictable!"
"I see a single potential future where Lars gives you a high five." Garnet answered as Steven gasped and looked at Garnet with hopeful eyes, but she wasn't finished. "And two more potential futures where you suffer third-degree burns all over your body."
"I don't think a high five is—Wait, did you say third-degree burns?" Vergil immediately zoned in on that last part with a look of concern.
Steven, however, ignored the last part and continued looking hopeful at Lars. "A high five… From Lars!" Without warning, he ran toward Lars.
"Steven, wait!" Vergil tried to warn him.
It was to no avail, as Steven yelled. "Hi, Lars!"
"Ah!" Lars got startled and threw the pitcher full of hot coffee overhead. It started falling toward Steven and would have surely burned him had Garnet not stepped in and blocked the pitcher with her body, drenching her in hot coffee. Sadie covers her mouth in shock.
"Criminy! Are you okay?!" Lars cried out in shock at what had just happened. "That coffee was really hot!"
"I drink coffee for breakfast." Garnet shrugged off their concerns and shook the scalding hot coffee off her body.
Steven nervously chuckled at the whole thing. "Funny."
Vergil grabbed Steven's shoulder and gave him a lot of annoyance. "Do. Not. Do. That. Again."
With that settled, they continued on down the Beach Citywalk to get some Fries.
"What should I ask Garnet about next?" Steven wondered.
"Steven, you need to be cautious; good things never happen when someone tries learning too much about the future." Vergil advised him.
"Ah, we'll be okay, Garnet's here." Steven reasoned, not seeing any harm.
Steven then approached the BC Fries, where Peedee was leaning tiredly against the counter, to get his regular order.
Steven went up to Peedee. "You know exactly what I want." He then turned around and talked to Garnet while Peedee went to get the bits. "Any possible futures here where I'm hurt by this?"
"Hmm…" Garnet thinks pensively before answering. "Mmm… Tons."
"Uh-oh." Vergil didn't like where this was going.
Steven nervously fidgeted with his fingers. "Uhh… Like… What…?"
"Well, for starters…"
(As Garnet explained, imagery of a Cartoon Steven appeared to illustrate the possible death outcomes of Steven, while in different wallpaper backgrounds.)
"You could just be going on about your business, eating your fry bits, and then suddenly you choke to death!"
(Cartoon Steven choked on his fries bits, popped into a skeleton, and collapsed.)
"Or you get so distracted that you fall down a manhole!"
(A walking Cartoon, Steven, falls into a manhole, and a cartoon skull pops out from it.)
"You could get food poisoning."
(Cartoon Steven turns into a skeleton in a hospital bed.)
"Or be bullied by wasps."
(Then Cartoon Steven gets stung by wasps, inflating like a balloon and popping into a skeleton.)
"And that's just a few instances off the top of my head." Garnet concluded.
Vergil looked at her with wide eyes, just picturing all that. "…Why would you put those images in my head?"
"Well, he asked." Garnet pointed out.
Steven was even more affected as he started sweating and took the bag of fries bits from Peedee. "W-What if I stand perfectly still?"
"You'll probably get a really bad sunburn." Garnet joked before she walked off. "Yeah."
"Not a good time for jokes." Vergil chastised her as he followed her.
"Uh, Guys, wait up!" Steven chased after them, suddenly afraid of being alone right now.
As they walked down the boardwalk, Steven stayed behind Garnet and beside Vergil as he started imagining various ways he could be fatally injured on his way back to the Beach House.
(He first looks out to the beach: Cartoon Steven walks in when a shark emerges from the sea and chomps on him. The shark then spits out Cartoon Steven's skull on the sand.)
(A sweaty Steven then looks at the Big Donut: Cartoon Steven walks by the Big Donut when the donut sign falls off and crushes Cartoon Steven, turning him into a skeleton.)
(Steven gets really worried and looks up at the sky: An alien UFO with an alien Cookie Cat in it appears before Cartoon Steven.)
Cartoon Steven marveled at him. "Cookie Cat! You're real?!" He then gets zapped by Cookie Cat's UFO. "Ah, no! I never considered that you would be evil!"
(Cookie Cat kills Cartoon Steven with a laser beam from his UFO, turning him into a skeleton.)
Steven became really paranoid, sweating profusely and hyperventilating.
Vergil saw the state he was in and became upset. "This escalated way too fast."
Later that day, back inside the Beach House, Steven stood in a daze behind the kitchen counter, wearing his bicycle helmet and holding ingredients for a sandwich.
Garnet approached him. "Steven."
Steven let out a startled yelp. "Aah!"
"Nice helmet." Garnet joked while she patted his head.
Steven nervously chuckled and scoffed. "Yeah… You- You never know… When... You're gonna... Ride a bike…!"
"…And you're making a sandwich." Garnet noticed.
"Yeah. Just gotta… Pick up the knife… And… S-spread the mayonnaise." Steven cleared his throat and started to sweat again. "Pick up the-…The knife!" He whimpered as he struggled to reach for the knife. "Pick up… Kni-i-fe!" He looked like someone on the verge of a nervous breakdown as he screamed in panic before hyperventilating.
Garnet grew concerned. "Steven!"
"Wait! Wait! I've got it." Steven announced as he picked up the jar of mayonnaise and plopped it all onto the loaf of bread, splattering mayonnaise all over the counter.
"That will kill you faster." Garnet joked with a smile.
"Not funny!" Steven snapped profusely with widened eyes.
"Oh." Garnet merely replied.
Soon enough, the others showed up, and Amethyst stopped in front of the counter. "Nice noggin, Steven." She laughed before stepping onto the Warp Pad with Pearl and Vergil.
"We're ready, Garnet." Pearl declared with her hands on her hips.
"Yeah, let's go." Vergil urged her.
"Wait. You're going on a mission?" Steven fearfully realized before he grabbed Garnet's arm to stop her from walking away. "Hold on! Don't leave me!" He begged with tears in his eyes. "At least tell me what's gonna happen with my lunch! Do I choke on a pickle?"
"Mm, you don't choke on a pickle." Garnet placated him.
Steven became even more fearful and clutched Garnet's arm tighter. "That means something else happens with the pickle!"
"Garnet! Shouldn't we be going?" Pearl called out from the Warp Pad
"Uh, maybe I should stay?" Vergil suggested as he stepped off the Warp Pad and went to the counter. "I don't think it's a good idea to leave Steven alone right now."
"Good idea, you stay with Steven for tonight." Garnet accepted his suggestion before she *knelt down and placed her hands on Steven's shoulders. "Steven, I can't be with you all the time. Just trust me when I say that you are in control." She smiled at Steven, and he smiled back, feeling a little better. "And do not go on the roof! No matter what."
That last part reignited his fears as Steven stared at Garnet in horror.
Garnet gave Vergil a last look. "Stay with him until we get back, and do not let him on the roof."
Vergil nodded, accepting her instructions. "You got it."
With that, Garnet made her way to the Warp Pad, and in a flash, the Gems warped away, leaving the two half-Gems alone.
"Well, I guess it's just the two of us for tonight." Vergil told Steven before he looked and finally noticed the mayonnaise-covered piece of bread on the counter. "Gah, a whole jar of mayonnaise on a piece of bread? Who are you, Hijikata?"
Night fell over Beach City, and it was now raining. It began to rain heavily outside the Crystal Temple. Steven was curled up by the windows in the dark beach house, looking terrified as thunder crashed loudly outside. Vergil sat nearby and focused on his laptop screen to pass the time. Steven then looked up to the ceiling.
"What could possibly happen to me on the roof?" Steven whimpered nervously.
"What do you mean what?" Vergil asked rhetorically, still staring at his screen. "Look at the weather, it's obvious."
Thunder crashed again, and the front door suddenly burst open, startling Steven and Vergil a little. Steven ran toward the door and shut it.
Vergil exhaled. "Man, I really can't handle jump-scares."
Steven was breathing heavily as he leaned against the door. "Okay. Calm down. Maybe I should just get a snack." He stared at the fridge before he gasped. "But what if…!"
(Cartoon Steven appeared again as Steven imagined more scary scenarios. He tried to open the fridge door, but it fell over him and he became a skeleton.)
(A live Cartoon, Steven, reappeared, and, for some unknown reason, a chandelier fell over him, turning him into a skeleton.)
(The wasps from before start stinging Cartoon Steven again.)
"Ugh! How come you guys are back?!" Cartoon Steen cried out.
"We're made of magic." Wasp 1 gloated.
"Yeah! Magic!" Wasp 2 mimed.
(Cartoon Steven turned a skeleton again while both wasps laughed maniacally.)
Steven screams in paranoia from his imagination. Thunder clashed again, scaring Steven, and he ran away screaming, hid under the table, and began to cry.
Vergil sighed and closed his laptop. "Alright, if you're gonna be like that, I'll get the snacks."
Steven didn't respond to his words as he saw his teddy bear nearby. "Ugh! Master of Ceremonies Bear Bear."
He reached to pick it up. Steven looked at the teddy bear, and his words, "I'm a big boy now!" echoed in his head.
"What's happening to me?" Steven whimpered painfully.
"That's what I want to know." Vergil stood in front of the table. "How are you so affected by all this?"
"I'm supposed to be… a Crystal Gem. I'm supposed to be a Crystal Gem!" Steven chanted to himself, trying to harden his resolve. Thunder crashed once more as he finally snapped. "AAAAAHHH!" Steven screamed before he punched the table off him so hard it was knocked off the floor and across the room as he got up with a glare. "Ugh!"
Steven then marched toward the front door, but along the way, Vergil stopped him by placing a hand on his wrist. "Where do you think you're going?"
"I'm going to the roof." Steven answered with stalwart acceptance.
Vergil tightened his grip. "You know there's no way I'll let you do that."
"I have to go." Steven insisted. "I have to know what the future is gonna do to me."
"You still don't get…?" Vergil muttered before he angrily grabbed Steven's whole forearm. "That should be perfectly obvious!" He yelled before he threw Steven across the room and against the kitchen wall. "If you go up there, you'll be struck by lightning! How much clearer could it be?!"
As the thunderstorm raged on outside, Steven got up from the floor and looked unswayed. "I don't care. If something is going to happen to me… Just let it happen." He decided with a lowered gaze.
"You honestly think I'll let you go out there knowing the danger you'll put yourself in?" Vergil asked as though the idea was mad.
"You don't understand." Steven grabbed his head in panic. "Everything I do shoves me violently toward the end! The more I know, the more I know that I don't know!" He knelt down with his hands raised in the air. "I can't live like this! Why did Garnet tell me about Future Vision?!" He cried out in desperation before he finally lowered his head and whimpered. "You were right; it was bad to learn too much about the future." He conceded. "Thanks for not rubbing it in."
"Yeah, well, being right isn't something to feel good about when this is the result." Vergil pointed out as he walked up to him and rested a hand on his shoulder to comfort him. "You need to understand going to the roof isn't going to make anything better."
Steven slowly looked up at him. "…Vergil, how come you're not scared about what might happen?"
"Steven, what is there to be afraid of? Danger? We've dealt with danger plenty of times on missions." Vergil reminded him. "Falling down a manhole or being bullied by wasps is nothing compared to everything we faced back at the Sea Spire."
"Yeah, I guess so." Steven saw his logic as he stood up.
"And even then, we made it through all those dangerous situations in one piece." Vergil pointed out again. "Look, I know danger could be around every corner; you don't need future vision to see every bad possibility, but you have to remember that's all they are: possibilities. Just because something bad might happen doesn't mean it will; all you have to do is be more careful." He reasoned. "Like what Garnet said about choking, people eat food every day, and any of them could choke, but they don't as long as they chew their food, and as for going on the roof, really, it's just come sense not to go on the roof during a thunderstorm."
"But what about the really bad stuff? The stuff that you can't just avoid." Steven retorted.
"You can't go through life giving in to negative thinking. Otherwise, you'll never be able to enjoy anything." Vergil reasoned, undeterred. "Sometimes you end up in a situation where you don't know what's going to happen, and it might be bad, but still, you go for it anyway. Even if we see the future, we decide for ourselves what we do about it; that's how the Gems do things, and we can too; after all, we're Crystal Gems, too."
Steven processed his words before a little smile appeared on his face. "Yeah, you're right." He sounded a lot better as he let out a sigh. "I guess… I was worrying about it too much. Thanks, I think I'll be okay now."
"That's good." Vergil smiled in relief. "Now, let's get that snack."
Later on, the storm had started to clear, and the boys were sitting by the couch; Steven was eating a sandwich, and Vergil went back to using his laptop. While they were minding their own business, the Warp Pad activated, and Garnet appeared back in the Beach House and the two immediately noticed her arrival.
[Garnet?] They both called out.
"Steven, thank goodness you're okay." Garnet spoke as she approached them.
"Yeah, why did you see a future where I wasn't?" Steven asked, a little nervous.
Garnet sighed before she knelt down and looked at him. "I'm sorry."
"W-What?" Now, Steven was confused.
"When I told you not to go on the roof, it was because I knew you might go on the roof because I said that and knew that all this might happen if I told you about my power." Garnet confessed with regret. "I saw it all, and I told you anyway.
"You foresaw all that from that far back?" Vergil was surprised at how far ahead she could see into the future.
"But why?" Steven had to ask.
"I took a risk at your expense." Garnet continued. "There was a chance you'd understand this, and we'd be closer." She took off her visor, revealing her third eye to see her sense of regret. "Steven, I see so many things that can hurt you. I should never have let one of them be me." She then put her visor back on. "There are millions of possibilities for the future, but it's up to you to choose which becomes reality. Please understand. You choose your own future."
"I do understand." Steven told her before he smiled. "Vergil helped me through, and now I know not to be afraid anymore." He got up from the couch to hug Garnet. "I'll watch out for myself from now on.
"That's good." Garnet hugged him before she looked at Vergil. "I took another risk. There was a chance that Steven would be okay if you stayed with him. I wasn't worried about that because I knew putting my faith in you was worth the risk."
"Hmm, thanks for believing in me, Garnet." Vergil moved in and joined their hug. "By the way, where are Pearl and Amethyst?"
"Oh, I came back ahead of them." Garnet answered nonchalantly. "They should be fine."
The star iris then zoomed in on the three of them, ending the chapter.
And that's the chapter.
First of all, I know it's been a while, but this story sometimes gets lost in the flow compared to the rest of my work. But, I will never forget about it.
As for the chapter, there were a few things I could do with it. While it stayed mostly the same, the ending changed things up a bit. For example, with Cat Fingers, Vergil stayed behind and helped Steven through his problem because, honestly, if anyone was with him during that time, they would never let Steven go on the roof, not just because Garnet said so but just because of logic.
Once again, Vergil pulled Steven out of a rut, this may seem like a recurring thing but that's just the nature of their relationship for now.
Anyway, thanks for reading hope you enjoyed. If you want more, then be sure to leave a review. If you like the story, click follow or favorite, and as always, have an awesome day.
