Sonic Prompt - Shadow Headcanon

World: Doesn't matter (Sonic Games most likely)

Summary: I would really love some Shadow headcanons.

Response:

After G.U.N had been silent for some days, Shadow retreated to a quiet grove and laid in a field of beautiful tall, green grass.

He sat as the forest sounds blazed to life with all the creatures and rippling creeks that inhabited it.

Then… he slowly closed his eyes, taking long and soundless breaths, calming himself as he lifted his head a moment.

A girl giggled.

"Shadow? Don't you love the rays coming through the trees?"

He smiled.

"Hehe! You can't see them if you're eyes are closed silly!"

A girl in a blue dress, in the imagination of his mind, mixed with memories of long, long ago began to dance in the meadow around him.

The grove of trees swayed, as his mind's eyes was much more brighter than reality.

She moved behind him, frolicking as his head would follow her movements and laughter, but his eyes remained shut.

"I can listen better to you this way." He responded.

She stopped a moment to shake her head at him, a kind and gentle smile over her face, but her eyes looked lovingly concerned.

"That's no way to enjoy nature,… But I suppose you miss out on what's around you if you take it all in at once." the girl looked up, and closed her own eyes. "The breeze is nice… the noises are sweet and cheery… like they're singing a song."

She turned back to Shadow, "How was work? Those men are aren't working you too hard, are they?"

"For a being created to be ultimate lifeform, they're petty tasks are little to worry about." He assured her of his well-being, in his own unique way.

She studied his face a moment, even tipping herself slightly at an angle to look at his face, before straightening up and smiling again. "Alright! I trust you, Shadow. I know you'll protect this beautiful world, no matter what it may cost you."

His smile faded.

"..Shadow?"

"..Maria…" His voice grew quieter. "…I…"

Her gaze turned gentler, as she walked over and leaned down beside him, hugging him as she did so. "..I miss you too…Shadow."

A buzzer flashed and beeped to life, as Shadow opened his eyes and seemed slightly started.

In his mind's eye, it was still very much sunny…

But the dusk of night was approaching now, and he looked to his watch-communicator.

"Shadow!? Bzzz…rrreezz- Come in! Agent Shadow? Bzzzz.."

He clicked a button. "I'm here."

"Agent Rouge is on to..BBZZZ-Something big-RRREEEEBBEEZZZ-Go to her aid as soon as possible!"

He hmphed, and tapped the device. "Coordinates? A day's travel? Why do you even bother with putting a time-estimate?" he got up, brushing himself off, but before leaving, he looked back… one… last time.

"Good luck! Shadow…" A fainted whisper through the tall, green grass.

He nodded, "For you, Maria." He raced off. "For the sacrifice you gave to this world… I will defend it, as if it was your life I save."
