The flashing light stunned Mark, and he tumbled into a bush. Branches cut and scratched his arms and legs. He was frazzled, and dizzy and saw stars. It took him a moment to adjust himself and piece together what conspired.
The realisation dawned. Memories came back to him far too fast to parse.
He scampered out of the bush, calling for Jessica.
Smoke bellowed from a patch of burnt grass where Jessica lay. Mark trembled, his breathing abnormal.
This can't be real. This can't be real. This can't be real.
Jessica was struck by lightning.
Mark scrambled off the ground. "Jessica!"
Jessica twitched. She was alive!
"Wait here, I'll call for help!" Mark exclaimed.
Jessica tugged his arm. "I'm fine." She said weakly and hoisted herself up.
"Jessica, you were hit by fucking lightning! You need help."
"Stay away." She said.
Mark was agape. Jessica gripped her chest. Clothes were torn and dishevelled, though her skin bore no scars or injuries. It was as though she had walked out of a zombie movie set, without any of the make-up.
In Mark's dazzled state, Jessica bolted to the mansion, slamming her whole body into the door. Her friends were there - they paused their party preparations, in various states of shock.
"Jes - " Gina, in a leopard print turtleneck midriff, clasped her hand to her mouth. Whatever words she ought to verbalise left her mind.
"Is that supposed to be her costume?" Cyrus asked in his Frankenstein attire.
Jessica ignored Cyrus and, rushed up the palace-like flight of stairs.
Serena went to stop Jessica and grabbed her arm. "Hey, where do you think you're - OUCH!" When her fingertips made contact she flinched at the sudden jolt of electricity.
Power oozed out of Jessica like an overfilled jug. She couldn't control it - the orb was a master of its creation. Jessica had to get away from her friends - and keep them safe from herself as much as her waning conscious could.
Jessica reached for the first door in view, a bathroom, and swiftly locked herself inside. The door thudded in a series of banging. She heard Mark shout, muffled on the other side.
Jessica stumbled to the bathroom mirror. She saw her reflection—her big puffy jacket indistinguishable from the rest of her tattered clothes. She pulled down her collar and exposed the large pulsating lump on her chest.
Jessica sank to the tiled floor. The lump multiplied and Jessica could feel the orb clawing away at her mind. Her consciousness was slipping. No! She had to keep fighting.
"Jessica! Jessica!"
"Oh my god, she was struck by lightning!?"
"Should we call an ambulance?"
"Don't call an ambulance! Please!" Jessica plead.
The muddied voices stop.
"Jess, is there anything we can do for you?" Mark finally spoke.
Jessica failed to tuck in a gasp, and electricity swelled around her. "Get Mr. Ono!" She cried. "Please! I need Mr. Ono!"
Sparks glittered abased explosions over a cacophony of battle cries from the foreboding Volcano Mountain.
The three lords of nature made haste, racing to the Volcano before the beasts could evade Earth. They reach the edge of a cliff, getting a good view of the battlefield.
"Can you see who is fighting?" Toby said, squinting and leaning over.
"I can't tell. The resistance?" Lucas replied.
"Who cares," Nick said and lightly shoved the other two out of the way. "Kagami's in trouble. Let's go!"
The lords skid down the mountain plain. Fireworks cracked above the Mountain. The fighting appeared ferocious, the state of the battle obscured by the chaos of smoke, fire and gormiti tossed and flung, caught in the aftermath.
A single combatant blitzed through the skirmish and took to the skies, leaving a trail of bright pink fire.
"Get the girl!"
"Stop the traitor!"
They all came to the same conclusions on who instigated the immense battle. Toby tried to hold Nick back. But Nick proved uncharacteristically fast. He unleashed his stone hammer. The force ricocheted off the plains, tearing open the ground. Lava gormiti and shades alike scramble and climb on top of each other, their attempts futile as they fall into the crevasse in one big heap.
"She's brought reinforcements! The lords of nature!" called a soldier.
"Pellet blaster!" Lucas struck next, pulling out a wooden machine gun and blasting down gormiti.
Nick and Kagami's gazes meet. She smiled, alleviating the doubt in Nick's mind. That is until he saw something coming after her.
"Watch out!"
Kagami was hit from behind and tumbled.
"Mighty tentacles!" Toby's thick tentacle hair caught Kagami in the air. "Are you alright?!" Toby asked holding Kagami. Lucas and Nick were still engaged in battle.
"Nrgh…Anchor?" Kagami said.
"Um…wrong person?" Toby replied.
Kagami rubbed her eyes.
"We need to get out of here! There's too many!" Lucas shouted, switching to his spore launcher and firing sleep grenades.
Toby pumped his fists. "I say an all-out attack is in order!"
Nick extended a hand out to Kagami. "Can you fight?"
She blinked a few times, unsure before taking his hand.
"Come forth! Hammer Impenetrable as the stone!" Nick yanked the hammer out from his chest. He smashed the hammer downwards - a strong magnetic shockwave pulsed outwards and thrust the lava gormiti.
"Creeper's attack!" Lucas' vines took root, latched onto the lava gormiti and pinned them down.
"Come forth! Trident of the Surging Seas!" Toby spun the trident, and summoned a whirlwind of water, "Poseidon Tidal Wave!" Toby dosed the lava gormiti into an endless flood.
Kagami hovered off the ground. Flames danced and swirled around her.
"Mind over lava!"
Kagami swayed her arm in a circular motion. The lava from all around undulated then flowed upward, colliding and shaping into an enormous lava bubble. On Kagami's command, the bubble splashed into Toby's flood. Steamy hot fog enveloped Volcano Mountain.
"Let's leave now that we have the chance!" Lucas said.
Kagami faltered. She rubbed her eyes again. "I can't see. My eyes are burning."
"What happened?" Nick asked.
"Fireblaze kicked some sand into my eyes. It's been irritated ever since."
"Guys, the fog is clearing," Lucas said. "Toby, can you clear her eyes?" Nick said.
"No problem-o bro." Toby's mind controls the water from the soaked plains to Kagami's cupped hands. "This should help."
Kagami dowsed her eyes into the fresh water. The irritation left, and her vision cleared up.
"Thank you -" She froze.
"Come on let's go." Nick took her hand.
"D-don't touch me!" She swatted him away. The fog cleared and the lava gormiti, neatly placed in line, ready to invade the earth, were reduced to an embarrassing mess.
"Kagami what's wrong?" Nick asked
"W-what did you do!" she shouted.
"Uh we pummelled Magor's lava army…?" Toby replied confused.
"I-impossible!" Kagami recalled when Fireblaze kicked her. "Oh no."
Obscurio emerged from a pile of beat-up lava gormiti"Get her! Get the traitor!"
Kagami worryingly looked for Vestalt. Vestalt lay underneath the sprawled dragon Cereberion.
"We need to go." Nick grabbed her wrist. Kagami's too dazed to retaliate.
Kagami and Vestalt's gazes met. Kagami waited for Vestalt's command. To tell Obscurio to hold down.
Kagami had never seen Vestalt so disappointed before.
Kagami was already on thin ice. They'd never believe her if she tried to tell them the truth. This was Kagami's last chance. And she fell right into Fireblaze's trap.
Nick tugged her. "Come on!"
"GET THEM!" Obscurio hollered
Kagami had no choice. She fled with the other lords. She thought about to her Oiji-san's stories. He said Lava gormiti couldn't cry. But he was wrong.
They can.
She was proof of that.
