Chapter 4 Neighbors

The next day MK decided to go out and take Ozzi out for a walk and explore the neighborhood. The three legged senior dog was very happy to go for a walk and he and MK headed out. As they walked MK pondered about the tree suddenly dying and falling over and tried to make sense of it. Was it a natural occurrence, a freak act of nature, or was there something else going on? Was some big company or secret organization testing some kind of new weapon or product in the woods and the dead tree was the result of that, or was it something stranger like aliens or maybe the tiny people who lived in the woods her father had talked about all those years ago?
MK thought about it for a few seconds and shook her head. The thoughts of a big company, secret organization, aliens, or tiny people being behind the sudden death and collapse of a tree was crazy. She had been reading too many science fiction and fantasy novels lately and she sure there had to be some logical explanation for the tree's sudden death and fall. The thought of a big company or secret organization doing something in the woods sounded more believable then aliens or tiny people. MK just hoped that the whole tree suddenly dying and falling over was just a one time thing and that there was no secret danger in the woods.
MK and Ozzi passed the Nickle family house, where the family happened to be hanging and sitting out on the porch. Mommo the grandmother was reading a magazine about aliens and UFOs, Fred and Doreen the parents were reading travel brochures, Lucas the young son was playing a little video game on a handheld console, and Tiffany the daughter and Lucas's twin sister was listening to music on some headphones.
Mommo was a heavy, short woman. She wore sweats with aliens and UFOs on them.
Fred was an obese, middle-aged man. He was balding and dressed in tropical flower shirt, shorts, and shoes.
Doreen is a pretty, middle-aged woman. She was quite slim, but a big read and wide hips. Doreen had light reddish hair and dressed in a blue long sleeve shirt, pants and shoes.
Lucas had brown hair, blue eyes, and fair skin with freckles. He wore thick-rimmed glasses and a white T-shirt with a large blue circle, blue denim shorts with matching shoes, and long white socks.
Tiffany had medium-length blonde hair and baby blue eyes. She wore She wears a tie-dye shirt that showed her midriff and belly button, blue jeans, and shoes.
The family noticed MK and Ozzi and waved to them.
"Hi there welcome to the neighborhood. I'm Doreen Nickle and this is my family. What's your name?" Said Doreen standing up to greet MK.
"I'm Margaret Katherine, though you can just call me MK." Said MK in greeting.
"Isn't that Randy's dog, Ozzi?" Asked Fred looking at Ozzi.
"It is. Randy is my father." Said MK.
"That's nice, Randy is a good neighbor." Said Doreen before introducing the rest of the family.
"I heard Randy believed there was little people living in the forest a few years back." Said Mommo.
"He did, but he never found too much proof of them." Said MK getting a little uncomfortable about bringing the little people up.
"Well he was only partially right. The little people are aliens!" Said Mommo.
"Aliens?" Asked MK.
"Yeah long long time ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, a meteor struck these parts. The meteor had some spores from an alien planet on it that was a part of a project to spread new forms of life on other planets and the life forms the spores created was the little people." Said Mommo.
"Um...ok." Said MK not sure if she should take that seriously.
"Mom that's enough." Said Fred gently taking Mommo and leading her away from MK.
"Sorry about that." Said Doreen.
"It's fine." Said MK.
"Grandma believes in a lot of crazy stuff about aliens, she has a bunch of fans and alarms setup in the house to ward off aliens and alert her about them entering the house." Said Lucas not looking up from his game.
"So what are you listening to?" Asked MK looking at Tiffany.
Tiffany removed her headphones and gave them to MK. MK put them on and gave them a listen. She was familiar with the song and liked it.
"Good song, you got a good taste in music." Said MK with a smile as she took the headphones off and handing them back to Tiffany.
"Thanks." Said Tiffany returning the smile.
"Well it was nice to meet you." Said Doreen.
"Nice to meet you too." Said MK.
"Hey is it alright to ask if you're able to babysit for us if we ever need you? We will gladly pay you." Said Doreen.
"Sure no problem." Said MK.
The two of them exchanged numbers and MK waved to Doreen and the kids before continuing her walk with Ozzi.
