Tommy landed on his back, he sat up rubbing it as Carrie stood over him, her hands on her hips.
"You were supposed to be back before 7:00 PM." She said sternly.
"We had a campaign going on." Said Tommy as he got up, using his training sword as a crutch to help. "It took months."
"Roleplay games don't exactly prepare you for school." Said Carrie as she casually twirled with her own blade. "Or, surviving self defense lessons with your step mother."
Tommy put up his blade as Carrie swung down on him again, but Tommy blocked it, and retaliated with a jab of his own, followed by several more attacks that Carrie parried.
They traded blows back and forth until Carrie brought up her leg and kicked the sword out of his gasp, sending it flying out of his hand and telekinetically yanked it into her own grasp.
"Hm, you need better grip butterfingers." Carrie smirked as she held both blades at her sides confidently.
Tommy shot out a jab at her exposed Stomach, sending step mother hunched over. "Okay… that was a… a cheap shot…"
"Hey, you left yourself open." Tommy said smugly. "Wasn't that your first rule?"
"No, it always rely on your instincts." Said Carrie, as she knelt down and swept him.
At that moment, Sue came out with a backpack. "If you're both done with your "domestic abuse" It's time our son was off to school."
Carrie helps Tommy up to his feet as he hurried up to his mom and grabbed his bag. "Thanks mom!" He kissed her goodbye and ran out the door to get his bike.
Carrie walked to stand beside her wife and put an arm around her.
"That boy's really got spunk." Carrie smiled.
"Do you have to rough him up so much?" Asked Sue.
"Trust me." Said Carrie. "From personal experience, you can't afford to be too nice."
She then pressed a hand against her forehead.
"Carrie?" Asked Sue.
Carrie opened her eye's again. "Somethings wrong."
Meanwhile,
Tommy rode his bike towards school and met up with his friends, Mike, Dustin and Lucas, as they reached the bike stop, they found that one of the usual occupants was absent.
"Hey, Where's Will?" Asked Tommy.
"I don't see him either." Said Mike.
"Hmm, Maybe he just went to class early again." Said Lucas.
"He's always scared Ms. Gurskey will give him another pop quiz." Added Dustin.
"Step right up Ladies and Gentlemen!" An unwelcome voice announced. "Get your tickets for the Freak show!"
The Boys turned and saw their arch-nemesis, Troy Walsh and his lackey, James Dante.
"Oh god…" Tommy groaned.
"Who do you think would make more Money in a freakshow?" Troy asked James. "Midnight?"
He punched Lucas.
"Frogface?"
He punched Mike.
"Toothless?"
He Punched Dustin.
"Or Dadless-"
Tommy caught his fist, surprising the two bullies as he glared coldly at them. "How about Michael Myers Jr. and your lisping toad?"
He shoved Troy's fist away, staring down the two boys as they worked up the nerve to glare back.
"And for your information." Said Dustin. "My teeth are coming in, it's called cleidocranial dysplasia."
"Shut up and do the arm thing!" Snapped James.
Dustin reluctantly took off his jacket and pulled his arms, cracking the Bone.
The two Bullies reeled away in disgust and slunk away, bickering about James' demand.
"Stupid assholes." Lucas scoffed.
"Why did you do that?" Asked Tommy.
"Because they wouldn't screw otherwise." Said Dustin.
"I think it's kind of cool." Said Mike. "It's like you have super powers or something, Like Mr. Fantastic."
"Yeah, Except I can't fight evil with it." Said Dustin.
"I'd say you fought off evil pretty good back there." Said Tommy.
Meanwhile,
Neighboring Hawkings Middle School, was Hawkings High School, where Mike's sister, Nancy met up with her childhood bestie, Barbara.
"So, did he call?" Asked Barb.
"Keep your voice down!" Said Nancy.
"Did he?" Barb insisted.
"I told you, it's not like that." Said Nancy. "Yes, he likes me, but not like that… we just… made out a couple of times."
"We just… made out a couple of times." Barb chuckled. "Nance, seriously, you're gonna be so cool now, it's ridiculous!"
"It's not!"
"You better still hang out with me." Said Barb. "That's all I'm saying, I mean, if you become friends with Tommy H. or Carol-"
"Gross!" Shuddered Nancy as she opened her locker. "I'm telling you, it's a one-time… two-time thing."
Nancy then noticed a note in her locker, it read.
Meet me.
Bathroom
-Steve
"You were saying?" Asked Barb.
Later.
Steve Harrington pressed Nancy against the wall of the bathroom, their mouths pressed together in a makeout session.
"Steve I…" She said amidst the kisses. "I have to… I have to get to class."
She pushed away from his embrace and picked up her bags.
"Let's do something tonight." He said.
"I can't." Nancy said. "I have to study for Kamminsky's test."
"Come on." Steve scoffed. "What's your GPA again? 3.4?"
"Kamminsky's tests are hard enough!" Said Nancy.
"Well then let me help." Steve replied.
"You flunked chemistry." Nancy pointed out.
"Only a C-minus." Said Steve, not caring about this fact. "So I'll be at your place around… 8:00 PM?"
"Are you crazy?" Nancy almost laughed. "My mom would not…"
"She won't even know I'm there." Said Steve. "I'm stealthy like a Ninja."
"You're crazy is what you are." Nancy replied as she turned away.
Steve stopped her before she could leave. "You could come in my car, we can relax, find a nice quiet place to park and just…"
"Steve." Said Nancy cutting him off. "I have to get to class."
And she made to leave the Bathroom, but not before turning back and saying. "Meet me at Dearborn and Maple at 8:00. To study!"
And she left.
Meanwhile,
Sheriff Jim Hopper pulled into the police station and entered the building, smoking a joint.
"Morning everybody." He called out.
"Morning Chief." Said Calvin.
"Damn, you look like hell." Said Phil snarkily.
"Well, It's better than your wife when I left her this morning." Hopper replied.
As the three officers laughed, Florence the secretary came up to Hopper. "While you were drinking or sleeping, or whatever it is you deem so necessary on Monday mornings, Phil Larson called, said that kids are stealing the gnomes out of his garden again."
"Garden Gnomes again?" Hopper groaned. "I'll get right on that one."
As he headed for his office, the Receptionist followed. "And another thing, Joyce Byers couldn't find her son this morning."
"Ah, another thing to get at." Said Hopper as he took a bite out of his donut.
"Mrs. Byers is very upset, S-She's-"
"Flo! We discussed this." Said Hopper. "Mornings are for Coffee and Contemplation."
And when he went to his office, he found a woman with short brown hair sitting in the front chair, almost as if she was waiting for him.
A Minute later, he was filling a missing report as Joyce Byers talked. "I've been waiting for an hour, Hopper!"
"And I apologize for that." Said Hopper.
"I'm going out of my mind!" She exclaimed.
"Look, Boy his age, he's probably just playing hookie."
"No! Not my Will, he's not like that." Said Joyce. "He'd never do anything like that!"
"Well you never know." Said Hopper. "My mom thought I was on the debate team, but really I was just screwing prissy girls in the back of my dad's-"
"He's not like you! Hopper!" Joyce ranted. "He's not like me, He's not like… most people, He has a few friends, but other kids are mean, they make fun of him, call him names, they laugh at him, his clothes-!"
"His Clothes?" Hopper asked. "What's wrong with his clothes?"
"Does it even matter?" Joyce asked. "He's a sensitive kid, Lonnie used to say he was "queer", called him a fag!"
"Is he?"
"He's missing that's what he is!"
Joyce took a sig on her cigar.
"When was the last time you heard from Lonnie?" Hopper asked.
"Last I heard, he was in Indianapolis, but that was a year ago." She explained. "He has nothing to do with this."
"Do you have his number?" Hopper insisted.
"He has nothing to do with this!"
"A lot of the time a kid goes missing, he's with a parent or a relative."
"But What about the rest of the time?" Asked Joyce. "What if something happened to him?"
"Joyce, this is Hawkins, the worst thing to ever happen was when an Owl attacked Mrs. Gillespie's head, because he thought it was a nest."
"Fine, I will call Lonnie." Said Joyce. "He will talk to me before he talks to… a Cop.
She leaned forward with a cracking voice. "Just find my Son Hopper."
As she left the room, another figure came into the office.
"Sheriff Hopper?" Asked Carrie.
"What do you want?" Asked Hopper, giving the strange woman a look.
"...I guess Mrs. Byers already informed you." Carrie said, her hands behind her back.
Meanwhile,
A lone figure stepped through the woods, she was dressed in nothing but a white skirt with blue dots on it, her hair was shaved as if to hide her gender and she wore an expression of blank emotion.
She stared out into the closest form of civilization she could find, the back end of a restaurant, she watched as the Chef took out the trash and went back inside the establishment through the backdoor.
The girl followed this man through the door and watched him serving his customers. She turned to the kitchen and saw a tray of French fries just sitting there, she eagerly began to eat at them, just as the Chef turned around and saw her.
"Hey!" He shouted, causing her to run, the fries spilling from her mouth as the Chef gave chase. "You think you can steal from me Boy?!"
He caught her before she could reach the door, and then got a good look at her. "What in the Hell?"
Meanwhile,
"Remember." Said Mr. Clarke as the bell rang. "Finish Chapter 12 and answer 12.3 on the difference between experiment and other forms of scientific investigation, this will be on the test which we'll cover chapters 10 through 12. It will be multiple choice with an essay section."
He trailed off as the students left, all except Tommy, Mike, Lucas and Dustin.
"So, did it come?" Asked Mike.
"Sorry Boys." Said Mr. Clarke. "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but…"
He paused.
"It came!"
He led them into the closest and showed them a series of Radios, the boys quickly scrambled towards and stared in awe.
"The heathkit ham shack." Said Mr. Clarke proudly. "Ain't she a beaut?"
"I bet you could talk to New York on this thing!" Said Dustin.
"Think Bigger." Said Clarke.
"California?" Asked Lucas.
"Bigger."
"Outer space?" Asked Tommy.
"Not that Big." Clarke shook his head.
"Australia?" Asked Mike.
Mr. Clarke nodded, the boys exclaimed in excitement.
"When Will see's this, he's gonna blow his shit!" Said Lucas.
"Hello, this is Mike Wheeler!" Said Mike in an Australian accent. "President of Hawkins Middle AV Club!"
Dustin quickly took over. "And this is Dustin and this is the secretary and treasurer of Hawkins Middle AV Club, do you eat Kangaroos for breakfast?"
As Lucas started his turn, The Principal came in, with Sheriff Hopper. "Sorry to interrupt, but uh, May we borrow the boys for a few minutes?"
Once in the Principal's office, Tommy was shocked to find Carrie there.
"Mom?!" Tommy asked. "What are you doing here?!"
"You're not in trouble Tommy." Said Carrie. "It's Will."
"What about Will?" Asked Mike.
After explaining everything, the kids began talking at once, so rapidly and over each other that the adults couldn't understand.
"Okay, Okay!" Said Hopper. "One at a time! You said he takes what?"
"Mirkwood." Said Mike.
"Mirkwood?" He turned to Phil. "Have you ever heard of Mirkwood?"
"Uh no." Said the Officer. "But it sounds familiar."
"They like to rename things with Pop Culture." Said Carrie. "I think they mean the road between Cornwallis and Kerley."
"It is." Said Mike. "We can show you if you want."
"I already know it." Said Hopper. "And after school, you are all to go home, immediately, that means no biking, no looking for your friend, no investigating, no nonsense, this isn't some Lord of the Rings story!"
"Don't you mean the Hobbit?" Asked Dustin.
"Do I make myself clear?" Hopper asked, ignoring Dustin, as the boys quivered back in fright.
"Do. I. make. Myself… clear?" Hoppered asked more sternly.
The boys could only nod.
Meanwhile,
Back at the diner, the Chef, Benny, cooked some burgers for the girl and fed them to her as they sat together at a table.
"Did uh… did your parents forget to feed you?" Asked Benny. "Is that why you ran away? They hurt you?"
She didn't answer, she just kept eating, Benny reached over and grabbed her burger from her. "Look, I need you to answer my questions here, Who are you?"
The girl showed his right arm, revealing a number, inscribed into her arm.
"011"
Benny looked at it closely. "What's it mean?"
"No…" Eleven said.
"Well I'll be damned, she speaks." Benny said as he got up. "You uh, you stay there, I'm going to call someone."
He went over to the phone and dialed for Child services. "All I know is that she's scared to death." He said. "She looks like an abuse victim, I kind of need someone to come by, We're at 4819 Randolph Lane, yeah, Randolph."
As the girl ate, the fan's rattling was starting to get to her, she seemed to stare at it intensely and as the rattling intensified… it stopped.
Meanwhile, far from Hawkins…
The stars and vast void of space was calming, then from out of Hyperspace, a Cruiser appeared, popping out of the blue like a rattlesnake, it coasted towards Earth as the occupants of the ship looked on.
"What world is this?" Asked one of the beings inside, a Female.
"Planet… Earth." Said another, also a woman. "I've heard the stories."
"And you believe her to be… hear?" Asked the first voice.
"Perhaps." Said the masked woman. "I sense much of this world, It might be worth checking out, so come Twelfth Sister, let us proceed."
And they entered the atmosphere of the planet.
