Prompt:

This was nuts.

I held my wispon in my quivering hand, having fallen and landed on my back. All I could hear were the explosions in the background, my shaky breathing… then I saw Zavok…

With an intense feeling of fear and uncertainty, I just started firing the flames in his face.

He held up his hands to block, and surprisingly, was able to laugh and move through the burst of fire.

My eyes widened, before squinting shut as I tried to squirm away, kicking my legs as they finally moved at my will again.

They pushed and ground my already hurt back against the gravel of the broken up street. Any minute now, my power in my wispon would deplete. I had been using it all day under Commander Knuckles's order to keep picking up the little red aliens as I went through with the attack.

Where was the backup? Was I the only one left that didn't run?

More like couldn't run…

Like a claw to its prey, I shrieked out a gasp as Zavok's hand gripped with the force of a lion's bite my wispon, the flames still pouring out as he squeezed the opening down. It dented and the flames started spurting.

In fright, I tried to pull the wispon away, fearing the little aliens inside it might be getting hurt.

I always thought of others… never myself… that's why I always end up in these predicaments…

When Mr. Tails was asking who would be willing to help others… I rose my hand.

Why did I do that? Act before I thought? I wasn't a hero. Before the war, I was barely anybody! I just… I didn't want to see suffering around me anymore.

He tore the wispon right out of hands, shaking me around a bit before I finally lost grip and threw the wispon behind him. I watched in horror as it clanked upon the asphalt, steel to gravel. Stone to my back…

And as I looked up… Fire to sky. Ash to grey clouds…

And Zavok to me.

He snickered once again, pulling back his clawed hand, ready to deal the last blow to my pitiful excuse of a recruit.

I scrambled back, leaning up a little to at least try, but…

I closed my eyes.

I already was spared by Infinite once…

I knew lightning didn't strike twice.

"Hey! Pick on someone your own size! Or better yet-!"

A voice broke the darkness of my terrified mind, and I removed my arm and opened my eyes to see what had spoken.

Or really…

Who.

"That's not how to you fight!" Sonic… was it really Sonic The Hedgehog?

He was talking to me, before looking back to Zavok, knocking him back, "Pick on someone with better footing…" he danced, wait, was he dancing?

He was moving his feet very lightly below and around himself, I could have sworn it was dancing.

"Heh, like these moves?" He was dancing! He wheeled around with his feet flying everywhere and struck a pose, winking to me.

I couldn't tell if the fire had warmed my face… or if it was his carefree, spunky cockiness…

I wished… no, I admired that. I wanted that…

He turned back to Zavok, seeing his claw strike down and hit the gravel, driving it through to make a pothole.

"Hey, you could use one of these!" Sonic threw me back my wispon.

"It-…It's broken!" was it just an excuse? I wanted to watch him, not fight… I wanted to be saved… not helped.

If that was the right way to put it, I don't know.

Sonic looked confused a moment, his eye catching a glimmer of my fear and smiling as soot skidded under his shoe.

He looked down, hearing the grinding sound and reached down with two fingers, feeling it.

He quickly took some and dashed to me, Zavok's hand still stuck in the gravel, and trying to yank it out.

"Remember something for me… alright?" Sonic smeared the soot in two black streaks on either side of my cheek, then looked me dead in the eye, lowering his hand to rest upon his raised knee, kneeling in front of me.

"…No matter what… you're a fighter." He took my hand and helped pulled me up, as I couldn't stop gazing into his certain eyes.

A fighter?

I wanted to help people… did that qualify to being as amazing as he was?

His smile widened, hearing Zavok rip his hand out and shake himself off, charging over to us.

"Think fast." Sonic smirked and pulled me up by him, but before he could dodge, I threw the wispon at him, causing him to grip the side of his face and stagger his charge off course.

Sonic watched in amazement, having not expected that, and saw Zavok ram into a building that crumbled on top of him.

He laughed, reaching up and placing a hand on his head.

"Hahah! That's one way of doing it!" his laugh was contagious, and although I was still amazed at what I did myself, I took that small bit of bravery I had, and laughed too.

"Well, here's to you, kid!" He offered me a fist pump.

I nodded, "To a fighter." And fist pumped him back.

He seemed to like my response, getting excited for some reason and nodding quickly, giving me a thumbs up. "That's the spirit!" he winked once more, and my spirits really were elevated.

He took off without a trace… well, a small one. Some blue escaped his perfect frame and lead my eyes to where he ran off too.

I finally smiled, turning to see Zavok shake himself from the building before I raced like a reflex to my wispon.

Sliding for it, I cocked it and fired a burst at some hanging ceiling from an upper floor that hadn't tumbled down yet.

It came piling down on him, and I rose up, touching my soot covered cheeks… "…Here's to you." I smiled, raising my head, confident that one day… I could be a hero like him. "Sonic."
