Sonic tried to reach for her, but Amy, in her frantic tears, kept trying to push him away.
"No! Let me go! Let me go-o-o..!"
Sonic gritted his teeth, not liking being pushed away, but also understanding the situation, and seeing her bawling her eyes out without letting him at least try and comfort her-
Wasn't an option.
He ended up grabbing her arm and pulling her close into a tight hug, one arm quickly swung to hold her in place, keeping her close, and the other on the back of her head.
"I.." he couldn't hold it in anymore. She had heard it all play out wrong. She didn't know what was happening. He couldn't blame her, but he also didn't want her blaming him! "I can't!" he finally let out.
She stopped struggling and hitting his chest for a moment, her attempts to break away futile, as she held still for a moment to listen, surprised by his words.
As the tears continued to stream down, he squinted his eyes, burying his head down behind her, over her shoulder. "I never could… and I never will. I won't just let you cry in front of me, Amy! I won't watch as your whole world crashes and not do anything to stop it! I can't! Not when I know you hate being alone!"
His words stopped her whimpers and turned her cries into soft sniffles.
Her lips trembled, unable to see his face, as the camera showed it hidden in shadow after Amy lowered her head to his shoulder.
"Just…. cry, Amy. If you have to cry… at least don't be alone."
Sonic was her hero, though he often felt a little weird hearing it, he didn't question it. Not one bit. But one of the things he feared about that title was ever having to save Amy from more than just robots and Eggman. But from herself.
How could he help the thoughts that swirled in her mind? Tearing her very beliefs apart, all she ever knew…
Nothing he could say could change what just happened, or the things she experienced, saw, and heard.
All he could do… was silently hold her, feeling the wet tears hit his chest.
He bit down on his teeth, anger surging from being unable to provide any further comfort.
He may talk big, but he had no idea what to do.
Other than… let her cry through it.
At least she wouldn't be alone.
He took a breath, and calmed down.
Someone has to stay strong through this. And Amy was clearly not gonna calm down anytime soon.
He had soothed her enough to get her to stop fighting him, but now he had to find a way to keep her sane. And not let the feelings overtake her again.
"I'm not letting go till I know you're okay."
With that, Sonic kept his promise.
With a transition, it then showed the two lying down, Sonic looking up at the sky as Amy kept crying, but this time, much softer than before.
Hearing her still crying seemed to slowly crack the armor that Sonic had built up over years and years of keeping his emotions in check. It was like fort knox, except, for a small tunnel to the side of it, that if anything got shot through, would go all the way down to the very core of his heart.
This was one of those moments.
He lowered his head from star-gazing and gently, though a little abrasive about it, rubbed her head and chuckled out lightly, "Are you ever gonna stop crying?" It was effected him more than he would say, or even show, as he heard her sniffle and lowered his hand down, catching a tear in mid-fall and wiping it away. Carrying the action of his hand, he also moved her hair out of her face, and let his hand rest on her arm.
Leaning back with a frown, he sighed, and tapped his foot.
How long was this gonna take?
Sure he cared… but… his feet were getting sleepy…
And that wasn't all, he was getting a little tried of her neediness….
She didn't speak either, which was strange, and worried him greatly. Even after that, what he felt, was a funny remark to lighten the mood, she stayed silent.
The frustration in him kept piling up, but he kept suppressing it… until he got an idea.
Looking around, he noticed the idea's main ingredient wasn't anywhere in sight, and sighed, realizing if he moved to quickly fetch the darn thing, he would be breaking his promise of leaving her side.
"…." he pouted, "….Okay." he got up and moved her up a bit, pushing her gently up as he got on his knees and put his arms under her.
"We're going on a little trip." he spoke lightly, and picked her up, keeping his promise of not letting her go till she was alright again, and ran off.
Amy finally opened her eyes, barely, but enough that Sonic could try and read what she was feeling or thinking.
Amy was like an open book, and like any good open book, Sonic liked to read before he commented.
Her expressions usually told him everything he needed to know…
Her expression wasn't telling him anything good.
She looked so… so…
His eyes turned sorrowfully away, back to the mission at hand.
Broken.
All at once, memories of her usual cheery self, full of life spirit, and hopeless romantic personality flooded his mind, as he tried to push them away or banish them from his mind.
Finally, he made it.
He slowed his pace and walked over to the flower field.
Plenty here to cheer up any girl!
Well,.. he was rooting for it.
With a little nudge to get her to look, Amy turned her exhausted head, and a frown turned in wonder at where she now was.
He smiled.
Finally….
He let some held air out from his lungs and started walking through the field.
"You know something interesting about flowers, Amy?" As he walked, her in his arms, held bridal style as was his way of carrying her, he spoke and hoped she'd listen. "They never seem to leave where they're planted… but I guess that makes them loyal to the end, right?"
Amy looked around, seeing the pretty wild flowers and even lowering a hand to have them skim her fingertips as Sonic walked by them.
She smiled.
His smile grew, before looking straight ahead again.
He sat her down with still an arm around her, trying to still not break any promises, and picked one up while they knelt down.
She wiped a tear away before lightly gasping at him handing the flower to her.
He winked with a charming smile, "Like you, flowers are strong. They let the clouds cry for them, and keep on swaying with the wind."
Amy didn't quite understand what he was saying, but took the flower anyway, smelling it's sweet scent, before pulling it slowly away from her.
"…Sonic…"
He perked his head up slightly to her, realizing she was about to say something pretty serious, and if he didn't have the right comeback, his whole plan in getting them there might be ruined.
"…I wish futures could be planned…" she wiped her eyes, a few more stragglers making their rounds in her eyes. "So we could avoid the heartaches."
"Heh." She was cute when she lets down her usual spunky and optimistic side. Although that was kinda cute too, he liked seeing the different sides of her.
It made her more real, in a since.
No one could be just… perfectly happy all the time.
"Where's the adventure in that?" Sonic's grin was more on the touching and soft side this time, but Amy's shoulders bounced and new tears formed, and he realized that might have been the wrong thing to say.
"W-w-w-wait a second..!" he waved his free hand out a moment, sweat dropping at his possible failed attempt to make her happy and smiling again.
"WHHHAAA!" she threw herself at him and forced him off his knees and onto his butt, as his arms flailed a moment at the odd action.
"Wa-wah, hang on! This wasn't suppose to end in more tears, Amy!" Sonic nervously moved his head away from her continued nudges of her head up under his chin, and his arms just stayed crooked up in the air, before sighing and seeing that this was probably the last wave of emotion he would have to deal with today.
He smiled, a bit sheepishly, and scratched his head, putting another arm around her and lightly chuckling. Seeing as she was probably gonna be okay after this.
It didn't help that later on, Amy had to face her own weaknesses and faults, hearing her own insecurities spat back at her again with an ancient spell that brought the worst part of you into a mirage'd being.
But this time…
Amy courageously accepted herself for who she was, and knew she wasn't alone in fighting it. She won by simply forgiving herself of her short-comings, which impressed the whole team, who were forced by the spell to remain silent, or Amy would be locked in the spell forever.
After breaking the spell and causing the next seal to be loosened, the team headed for the next trial, seeing as that's where Eggman had disappeared at.
Hoping to find answers to Eggman, the team walked towards the forest, before Amy turned to Sonic. "Sonic?"
"Hmm?" He had been distant since her spell's moment. Hearing all her insecurities and watching her triumphant over all those horrible things… he had realized he really knew nothing about who she was, apart from what she showed, which was usually so wonderfully lively and joyful.
She always had a bounce in her step… seeing that other side of her… it was almost worst than that moment he comforted her.
During his realizations about her though, he stopped his thinking to acknowledge her calling his name. "What's up?"
"You normally speed off ahead and explore before any of us even get there. What gives? Why travel at the same speed as everyone else?" she leaned forward, hands behind her back, and giving him a questioning look.
Her smile… was genuine as always.
But this time… Sonic could see the things she held back, the thoughts she would also banish, and the dark sorrows of knowing her future's littered in mostly unknowns.
And he was part of those unknowns.
He looked away, seeming a little shy all of a sudden.
It was up to him what her future seemed to be, and she was fully aware he didn't think about the future very much. He lived one day at a time, reminiscing every now and then, but always living for the now.
"…Well?" Amy tilted her head cutely, as if trying to persuade him to answer her.
"…I have to… ehem." he kept his voice down low, continuing to walk with his arms swaying at his sides.
His head went even more down, eyes up.
"I just want to make sure you're okay."
He closed his eyes and speed walked ahead, but his answer had made Amy pause in her own.
Sonic would always feel he needed to take care of her. Even if he didn't want to all the time, he knew she could take care of herself, he still had a nagging feeling from that tunneled core of his armored heart that pulled him to show greater emotion and care for her.
He always figured it was because she was the first friend he had ever made. But he tried to not think of it any further than that.
Amy giggled, and burst off after him, as he looked awkward in trying to escape her with a speedy shuffle of his 'walking' feet.
"Sooooniiicc!" With her arms spread out, she tried to catch up to him, but he raced up a tree. "Oooohh… you can't just say something like that and run away!"
He looked down at her, and then away again, huffing.
She may be dramatic… but he wouldn't say he didn't like that about her.
"What's going on?" Tails asked, probably the first one to hug her when she came out of her spell, worried sick from all the things he had heard that mirage say to her.
"Ohhh." Amy puffed up the side of her cheek in annoyance at Sonic's behavior. "Sonic's being a big baby and won't come down!" she stated, as Sonic turned to stick his tongue out at her.
That wasn't it at all!
"Oooohh! Come down here and let me love you!" Amy called out, about to climb the tree but Tails and Knuckles held her back.
"Now, hey! Take it easy, Amy! Whatever Sonic did it doesn't deserve this!" Knuckles spoke out, but he didn't know what he was talking about.
"A-Amy! Don't be so fierce!" Tails commented, as Amy finally let it go and stomped away.
"Ohhh, fine! I'll let you get away from me this time, Sonic!"
She looked over her shoulder though, smiling sweetly up to him.
He moved his laid out legs, getting a better view of her, and his eyebrows softened to a droop as he smiled warmly back down to her.
(I have no idea where this came.)
