14. Chapter 13- Benched

Wynonnas P.O.V.

After a boring morning of classes without M'gann and Connor, I finally made it to my free period and made a beeline straight to the music room. I book a slot every week so I can have some time by myself to practice my music. A skill I don't usually get to use back at the cave.

I sat down at the old piano, shrugged off my leather jacket and placed it on top of my bag. I pulled my hair back into a loose ponytail before laying my hands on the keys. I took a breath and began to play. Shortly after I before playing, I started to sing

"It's not simple to say
Most days I don't recognize me
These shoes and this apron
That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave 'em

I'm not anything like I used to be

I still remember that girl

I let my hands drop off the keys and just sat at the piano. I sat and thought for a second before pulling my phone out of my pocket, I had a message from M'gann that read

'Got called out for a last-minute mission. It's just you and Wally at the cave' that piqued my interest so I sent her a message back

'What mission? How come I wasn't told?' Since I've had a couple of power flak outs it's almost as if the team have been walking on eggshells around me especially when it comes to missions. When out in the field, more often than not, I'm paired up with one of the others. It's very rare that I'm on my own anymore.

Anyway, after not receiving a reply from M'gann, I grabbed my jacket and bag before heading to the door.

I was in my own little world as I came out of the music room until someone full on bumped into my side. I lost my balance slightly, pushed my hood down, took my headphones out and said
"Hey, watch where you're going!" I looked down and saw a brunette girl about my age gathering her belongings, she put them in her bag whilst saying
"Sorry, I was trying to find room 645, I didn't see you" I stretched out my hand and said
"Well if you're looking for Mr Shelby's class, sorry to say but you're on the completely wrong side of the building" She took my hand and as I helped her to her feet she said
"Oh man seriously! I could never understand maps" I smiled before raising my eyebrow and saying
"I take it you aren't from around here and I don't just mean the accent" She had a thick English accent. She smiled and tucked some hair behind her ear whilst saying
"You picked up on that then. I just moved to town" I held my hand out again and said
"I'm Wynonna Smith" she shook my hand and said
"I'm Makkari. Makkari Johnson"
"Welcome to Happy Harbour, Makkari Johnson" Just after I said that the bell rang.

We walked out into the hall and it was basically empty. She looked around as I said

"You looked surprised that everyone got to their classes quickly" She looked at me and said

"A little yeah" As we began walking down the hall I said

"Have...Have you ever been to a school before?" She scratched the back of her neck and said
"Yeah, once. I went to a school for a little bit in London. Completely different from this though"

"So before you went to school in London you were homeschooled?"

"Private tutors mostly"

"Sounds…" She cut me off by saying

"Lonely"
"I wasn't gonna say that exactly" We stopped as she said

"Don't worry about it Wynonna. It was lonely. But that was years ago. A fresh start, new school, new people" you could hear by her voice that she was kind of nervous. I smiled before nudging her shoulder and saying

"Don't worry, everything will be fine. Come on, I'll give you a tour. Gets me out of triple maths"

BRUGES
December 15, 20:08 CET

Dicks P.O.V.

"Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Haly International Traveling Circus where the world of the centre ring is your oyster. And these are our latest pearls. The Daring Dangers…Dan Danger" I was the first to jump from the trapeze. I went into a tuck and roll and passed M'gann as I did
"Dawn Danger" Artemis was below us with her bow at the ready
"Diane Danger" Roy was doing the same
"Dane Danger" Connor was on the platform below us with two barrels in his hands
"And Dean Danger" He threw them up at the same time as Artemis and Roy released their arrows. M'gann and I went through the barrels and just missed the arrows. M'gann and I then grabbed the trapeze bars
""You'll never see another trapeze act like this, folks. And all performed without a net" She looped her legs over it and hung down to catch me but I missed her hands
"Robin!"

The crowd screamed and I couldn't stop my mind drifting back to the day I lost everything…

I forced myself out of that thought and said over the mindlink
"Don't blow our cover" Connor replied
"But saving your life's okay?" He threw a barrel that I landed on and was sent propelling back up towards M'gann. I held out my hand but was still just short of hers. Her eyes then flashed green and I was lifted slightly so I could reach her hand. As we swung I looked at her and said
"What did I just say?"
"The crowd couldn't see me use telekinesis from below. Besides, I've been using it all night. I'm not exactly the acrobat you are" We landed on the podium and I had sweat dripping down my face. We smiled and waved at the audience as I said
"Yeah, neither am I right now. I think I caught that 24-hour bug that's been going around the circus. But the show must go on" We regrouped on the ground and I was feeling worse than before
"Put your hands together for the Daring Dangers" We waved at the audience as M'gann said
"Didn't think you'd make it through"
"Neither did I. Help me backstage" She put her arm around my back supporting me as we went backstage.

As we walked backstage one of the other performers spoke
"Ray, have you seen my other torch?" Ray handed it to him whilst saying
"Here. You dropped it outside the train"
"Thanks. You're a lifesaver"
"Break a leg" Haly then spoke from the ring
"Bear witness, ladies and gentlemen, to the Dragon's Breath"

As Haly joined us backstage two other performers went up to him saying
"Haly, what's the deal? Giving the top slot to those Danger kids?"
"That's our slot" Haly looked at the pair before saying
"Was your slot, until you missed that performance in Paris"
"Carlo was sick. He's better now. Plus those Dangers are a sham…" They looked over at us before continuing
"They say they're brothers and sisters. They don't even look alike" Haly pushed past them saying
"You just don't like the competition"

However, he quickly came face to face with a guy in a suit.
"Oh, for crying out loud, not you again. We're in the middle of a show" The guy in the suit then said
"Then we'll talk after. But we will talk. Another city last week. Another tech firm was robbed. Another stop on your tour. If I prove you're responsible, I will shut you down"
"I've got three minutes to gather props and get back to the centre ring" the guy in the suit then walked over to us. He took out his badge and said
"Faraday. Interpol. New act?" I replied
"Yeah. Just joined the tour"
"Probably clears you. But don't get too comfortable. Haly's going down for this"

~Later that night~

We suited up and went to stake out a potential target. Miss Martian and I were on one roof, Red arrow and Artemis on another and Superboy was on his own. As we waited Superboy said over the mind link
"If Interpol's already on this why are we bothering?" I quickly replied
"Because Batman said so. Why? You had something better to do?" He just glared at me from the rooftop. Artemis then said
"How do we know the thieves will hit here?" Red then said
"There are more obvious targets" I then explained my reasoning
"And Faraday'll have them covered. I've analyzed the tech already stolen and the pattern suggests this is the place" I wiped the sweat from my forehead as Miss M said
"How are you feeling?" I glanced back at her and replied
"Lousy, actually. But I'll manage"

After a minute or so Superboy spoke again
"Contact. Northeast quadrant" We watched as the masked figure did and triple front flip over the gate. Superboy then said
"Looks like we know why Carlo missed a performance" I replied
"Could be Carlo. Could be his brother. Keep an open mind. And move in" We regrouped by the warehouse and as Superboy joined us with an almighty thud I said
"Did you see where he went?" Seconds later Superboy said
"The warehouse"

We infiltrated the warehouse and surrounded the unknown man as I took a bit of tech out of a box. I laughed and as he turned around said
"Caught red-handed. Red-faced too, I'll bet" Artemis then said
"Acrobatics won't get you out of this" Out of nowhere the man pulled out a firestick and blew it towards us
"Look out!" We all moved out of the way and took cover just before Red Arrow said
"Those crates are full of live ammo. Move"

Seconds later the building exploded with us still inside… I'm really regretting not bringing Wynonna along at this point.

Superboy pushed the door of the broken container we were in before saying
"That guy's dead meat!" He started running off but stopped when I called after him
"Superboy, no. You need to get her out"
"He's getting away"
"And that matters more than Miss M? The fire's killing her" I was barely managing to keep her upright. He hesitated for a second before walking back over saying
"Right, right" He scooped her up and ran out of the building away from the fire. I then looked at the two archers and said
"Artemis, Arrow. Find the thief" I took a slight step before collapsing. The pair rushed over as Artemis said
"Because he matters more than you?" Red wrapped my arm around his shoulders and said
"You're still off your game, pal. We're getting you out too"

~The next morning~

Between us getting back and waking up a thin layer of snow covered the ground. After a quick training session in the ring we began walking back to our train car but stopped when we heard Faraday speaking to Haly
"Another weapons plant is hit, and once again the circus is in town. I don't believe in coincidences"
"I don't care what you believe. My people are not responsible. I did a bed check last night. Every single member of my troupe was asleep in their bunks." We zoned out of the rest of the conversation as M'gann said
"Well, we sure weren't" Artemis then said
"And if he's lying about us…"

We didn't finish the conversation there, we went back to the car instead.

Once back in the car, I put my hologlove on and pulled up the footage from previous robberies. As I was doing that Artemis said
"So two thieves, right? The fire-breather and one of the acrobats" M'gann then said
"Dressed in identical clothes" I got the footage up and said
"Maybe not just two. Here's the Madrid security footage" It played and showed the guy pulling and bending metal bars
"And now Paris" The footage changed to someone walking across a powerline like a tightrope. Upon seeing the footage Roy said
"So the strongman and the clown too. If the entire circus is involved, Haly himself may be the mastermind" I quickly replied
"You don't know that!" M'gann then said
"It would explain his lies" I then stood up and said out loud
"I told you to keep an open mind" I then left the train car, slamming the door behind me.

I left the train car and just walked. I had to clear my head, I needed to think/ However, I soon found myself standing looking at an old Flying Graysons poster
"Ladies and gentlemen the Flying Graysons" I was snapped out og my thoughts when my comm beeped in my ear
"Uh... Yeah?"
"Dude, where are you?" It was Wally
"Confidential mission from Batman"
"Wow. You know what I'm doing? Making a baloney sandwich. Like you just did. I talked to Tornado. You guys are not on a mission. Not an official one, anyway" I sighed before saying
"A friend, Jack Haly"
"The circus guy? From your old Flying Grayson days?"
"Yeah. He's implicated in this global crime-spree. Someone in the show's dirty, but I need to prove Old Jack's clean. He might lose the circus"

It went quiet for a moment before he spoke again
"Then why not bring me along? I know your backstory. I know what that circus means to you. It's where you grew up. It's where you lost your…" I cut him off by saying
"I left you behind because you know my backstory. I didn't want my best pal questioning my objectivity"
"Dude. That's what a best pal's for" I then heard a clash sound
"What was that?"
"Oh Wynonna just got back and I think i'm in trouble"
"What have you done?"
"What! Nothing!" I then heard Wynonnas voice
"Besides trashing my home" I smiled slightly as Wally said
"Dude, just be careful and try to keep a clear head yeah?"
"Yeah, We'll be back in a couple of days"

Mount Justice
December 15, 21:30 EDT

Wynonna P. O. V.

So after spending the evening showing Makkari around town we went to my favourite diner and grabbed something to eat. Makkari seems like a pretty decent person. She's just been relocated over here with her Mom; her Mom's just been promoted at her job and got relocated. I gave Makkari my phone number and told her to text me if she needed anything.

Anyway, I just got back to the cave and my feet are killing me. They were hurting so much that within minutes of walking through the entrance I took my boots off. They've got a bigger heel than I'm used to but hey ho I'm trying something new. So with my shoes in one hand, my jacket in the other and my bag slung across my shoulder I walked through the cave towards the kitchen. As I got closer I could hear Wallys voice
"Dude, where are you?… Wow. Do you know what I'm doing? Making a baloney sandwich. Like you just did. I talked to Tornado. You guys are not on a mission. Not an official one, anyway"

I walked in and saw him standing at the kitchen counter surrounded by mess and with a sandwich in his hand. I then looked around the rest of the room and saw it was a mess. Dammit, Wally.

I placed my shoes on the floor neatly and my jacket on the counter as Wally said
"The circus guy? From your old Flying Grayson days?... Then why not bring me along? I know your backstory. I know what that circus means to you. It's where you grew up. It's where you lost your...Dude. That's what a best pal's for" I then dropped my back on the counter and Wally finally looked up at me. He gave me a sheepish smile before saying
"Oh Wynonna just got back and I think i'm in trouble...What! Nothing!" I then said
"Besides trashing my home"
"Dude, just be careful and try to keep a clear head yeah?"

He then took his earpiece out and shoved it in his pocket before saying
"Where have you been?"
"I've been out with a friend and before you say anything, yes i've got friends outside of the team" I then rested my arms on the counter and leant forward slightly whilst saying
"Now, what do you know about this mission that we've both been left out of?"

GENEVA
December 17, 00:37 CET

"So the show will go on, and I have the feeling I have you Dangers to thank" I looked up at Jack, shrugged and said
"Don't know what you mean" he stood up and began walking round his desk whilst saying
"No, of course not. But I'm guessing you'll be leaving now" I nodded and said
"Time to move on" He then placed a hand on my shoulder and said
"Well, Dick, I'll miss you" I took a slight step back and said
"It's Dan. Dan Danger" He just smiled down at me and said
"Son, you've grown but some things never change, like the sight of a Grayson on the trapeze. You can't fake that. Can't hide it" I felt my eyes begin to get all watery as he said
"So do an old ringmaster one last favor…"

Mount Justice

December 17, 01:20 EDT

Wynonnas P.O.V.

I hooked my laptop up to the TV and called
"Wally I found it!" He ran in and said
"What? The live stream?" I stood up and said
"Yeah"
"Ladies and gentlemen the farewell performance of the Daring Dangers" We sat down on the couch and watched as the team began a finale display.

We sat back in disbelief as we watched Dick fly through the air. It was beautiful and he was happy. I sat back in the chair and said
"Wow, just wow" Wally smiled and said
"He's right at home"
"He really grew up doing this stuff?"
"Yeah. The Flying Graysons were the best of the best. And thinking about I think that's the first proper time he's performed since… Since his parents" I rested my head in my hand and said
"I'm not gonna lie, I looked him up when he finally told me his identity and oh my god I thought I had it rough" He sat back as the performance finished and said
"Yeah, if Bruce wasn't there to take him in…" I cut him off
"I don't even want to think about it"

I then let out a staggered yawn. As I did Wally looked over with a concerned look on his face. I rolled my eyes and said
"Dude I'm fine" He raised an eyebrow and said
"Are you though? Really?" I stood up and said
"You sound like Roy" As I walked into the kitchen he said
"We're all worried. We can't help it, Nonna. You're family"
"I'm also capable of looking after myself, Wally"
"Oh we know that to Princess" I leant against the countertop, looked at him and said
"Alright look, my powers were on the fritz a bit but I've got it under control. Dinah said it was just stress. I'm good" He stood on the other side of the counter and said
"The second it starts to happen again…"
"You'll know about" He then put his arm up on the counter as if he was getting ready for an arm wrestle before saying
"Promise?" I did the same and gripped onto his hand. I smiled and said
"I promise"

~1 hour later~

Wally only just managed to clean up his mess by the time the team came back. Everyone was noticeably tired so we didn't socialize much when they got back, they all basically went straight to their rooms. Dick said next to nothing when they returned. So after everyone retreated to their rooms I got up from the couch, grabbed my phone and headed down the hall to his room.
"Gonna let me in?"

Moments later the door slid open.

I walked into the room and just as the door was closing behind me, I had a pair of arms wrapped around me, holding me close. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and ran my hands through the back of his hair as he buried his head in my shoulder. I then spoke
"Are you okay?" he just shook his head. I then stepped out of the hug, placed my hands on either side of his face and said

"Talk to me. Tell me what you need?" He just reached up and held onto my wrists as a single tear fell down his face. I wiped it away with my thumb as he went to say something but was cut off by his communicator beeping. I pulled my hands back as he wiped his eyes and pulled out his communicator

"Yeah?"

"We're needed in Gotham. I want you back in 10 minutes" It then cut out. Nothing else was said between us as he silently left the room.

~Later that night~

No ones P.O.V

The halls of the mountain were silent. The young teens slept soundly in their rooms. For the first time in weeks, Wynonna Smith fell asleep alone. Calming music blared through her ears, blocking out everything. Curled up in her thick duvet and fluffy blanket, the lonely Patrovian slept soundly. Her hair falling effortlessly down the side of her face.

Little did the little Patrovian know a couple of her ancient artefacts from her home began to come alive. A grey cube began pulsating red. Slowly it opened and a beam of light came out. Unbeknownst to the sleeping Patrovian, her powers began to react. The energy was syphoned from her hands and into the cube.

When the syphoning stopped black veins pulsated across her body before disappearing like nothing ever happened...
