Breezepelt shot Jayfeather a suspicious glance as he wandered outside to the next challenge. He knows. He saw me last night, Breezepelt thought, his tail swishing, I have to get rid of him!
Quailwing wandered out from a forest in front of the cats. Suddenly, music started to ring in Breezepelt's ears, "Sitting in the hall of fame! And the world's gonna know your name!"
Breezepelt recognised this as Hall of Fame- The Script. The song stopped abruptly at the end of the chorus, and Quailwing began to speak, "Well, I see your all here. Except Bumblestripe obviously. Anyway, today's mission, you need to split yourselves into two groups. Go on, what are you waiting for?"
Should I go with Jayfeather or not? Breezepelt pondered, Then I could keep watch on him, but if I went in the other group, I could spread rumours about him.
Breezepelt decided to play it safe for now and went with Jayfeather to Briarlight's group. Jayfeather's siblings came to join him, followed by a few more cats.
"Right," Quailwing's voice echoed through the clearing, "Now you're in your teams, you're probably wondering what the task is. Well, it's to do with music. I will play you some extracts of songs, stop them part way through, then you have to carry on the song. First team to sing the next two lines of the song will get a point. Each song you get correct, you will get one hundred pounds to add to the prize fund. The cats who have sung the songs correctly will have a chance to earn a special bonus. Are you ready?"
The yowling of many cats deafened Breezepelt.
"Let's put that to the test, shall we?" Quailwing pressed a button on the speaker that had been playing Hall of Fame. Suddenly, it started blurting out really loud music.
"Loaded up when the sun comes down! Gettaway car for two young lovers! Me and the girl straight out of town! Over the hills and undercover!"
"Oooooh! I know this!" Squirrelflight yelled.
"Stop telling everyone and sing it then! We want our team to win, don't we?" Breezepelt grunted.
Squirrelflight shot him a dirty look, then began, "Green, green grass! Blue, blue sky!"
"Yes! Well done!" Quailwing congratulated her, "The first point goes to Briarlight's team! Right, onto the next song."
Again, the next song was played on the speaker, "Then she lit up a candle, and showed me the way! There were voices down the corridor! I thought I heard them say!"
This time, no cat shouted out that they knew the song, instead, nearly everyone started to sing really loudly, "Welcome to the Hotel California! Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place)!"
"A point for both teams! Next song!" Quailwing announced.
"Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eye's! What doesn't kill me makes me want you more!"
"AND IT'S NEW ThE sHaPe OF YOUR BODY! IT'S BLUE, THE FEELIN' I'VE GOT!"
"Whoa! Ok Dovewing! I think we all get that you like this song!" Quailwing exclaimed, looking as baffled as the rest of the cats, "The next point goes to Ferncloud's team!"
.(Switched POV: Jayfeather)
Soon, the mission had come to an end. The scores were equal. 25 to Briarlight's team, and Ferncloud's team had 25 as well.
"Ah, well, now I see that it's a draw!" Quailwing said, her tail grazing the floor as it swished side to side, "This calls for a sing-off! Each chose one cat from your team. The chosen cat will have to sing two lyrics of a song, let their opponent sing the next two lines. This process will repeat until I tell the competitors to stop. I will decide on the winner. The winner depends on how good your singing is, and how well you know the lyrics. Off you go!"
"I don't really know why," Jayfeather began, "but I want to do it…"
"Well, that's a first!" Brightheart gave him a bump.
"Well…"
"No! Don't worry! We want you to do it! Right?"
A chorus of yowls of agreement rang through Jayfeather's ears.
"Go on Jayfeather, walk up to Quailwing," Brightheart persisted. Jayfeather strode to the front, closely followed by Berrynose on the other team.
"Looks like we have our two competitors!" Quailwing announced, "The song you will be singing, is 'Beautiful Things' by Benson Boone. Have both of you heard this song?"
Both Berrynose and Jayfeather nodded. Jayfeather new the lyrics of this song word for word, and really liked it, so he was excited that the song was actually one he knew.
"Great! Berrynose, you begin," Quailwing sounded pleased, "Start in 3… 2… and… 1!"
The intro music began to play, and Jayfeather heard Berrynose tap the microphone in his hand. The music suddenly stopped. It was the queue for Berrynose to start singing, "For a while there, it was rough! But lately I've been doing better!"
Berrynose's voice surprisingly low, but it still sounded amazing.
"Than the last four cold Decembers! I recall!" Jayfeather was shocked at how good he sounded. His voice was higher than Berrynose's, and it sounded much better.
"I see my family every month! I've found a girl my parents love!"
"She'll come and stay the night! And I think I might have it all!"
Berrynose raised his voice even more, "And I thank God every day! For the girl he sent my way!"
"For I know the things he gives me! He can take away!" Jayfeather remained calm and sang the words at a reasonable volume.
"And I hold you every night! And that's a feelin' I wanna get used to!"
"But there's no man as terrified! As the man who stands to lose you!"
"Oh, I hope I don't lose you! Mh!" Berrynose was looking annoyed that Jayfeather was as good as him at singing and hadn't made one fault.
"Please stay! I want you, I need you, oh God!"
"Don't take!" Berrynose's voice suddenly went off, it started to go high-pitched, then back down to low, "THESE BeautIFUL tHiNgS tHaT I'Ve GoT!"
"STOP!" Quailwing yelled, "I think, just hearing that, we have a clear winner!"
Jayfeather tensed, even though, he couldn't lie, it was going to be him.
"…Jayfeather!"
Yes! Jayfeather celebrated in his head, but he betrayed no excitement. Instead, he bowed his head, muttering, "Thank you," to Quailwing.
But his joy was soon to end. The banishment was coming. And one cat in particular, was out to get him.
