AN:/ I'm glad you liked the first chapter. Here is the second one, I've worked with the help of Jax.
This story will be a Calzona endgame. A guest commented I must hate Callie because she is always looking bad in my stories.
It's not the truth at all. Like a lot of Calzona shippers, I love them together as a couple, I have to admit as solo character, I prefer Arizona, but what I really like is them together in the bad or the good situation they are amazing. They even had chemistry in their fight. I was so mad at the writters when they litteraly destroyed Callie's character in season 12. I just like to write some redemption story line for her character. It might not be obvious, but I Love Calliope Torres^^. She will come around in this story, don't hate her too much!. Have a nice reading, and let me know what you think!
...
It had worked. She was certain there was a tiny human in her womb because she had followed up the pregnancy test by doing a blood test, it was confirmed. There it was, written down, in black and white, on a piece of paper that would change her life, she was shocked and so surprised it had worked.
She had done it almost on a whim. She was now facing the reality and it was scaring her.
What had she done? Everybody left her anyway, why would this little one be any different?
She knew that people would start staring and talking about her again. They would say she wouldn't be able to raise a child on her own, that it was not by chance that Callie had won sole custody of their daughter.
They would think she was just replacing Sofia.
They could say whatever they wanted…..She knew the truth, she was immune to their gossip after all she had endured.
Because Callie was a talkative person when it came to her personal life, some people knew they were trying to have a second child just before their divorce.
But who knew it was Arizona who had talked Callie into considering a surrogate? She was the one who had contacted the agency.
And who knew that she had, maybe for a minute, doubted their decision when Callie had listed all the hurdles they would face.
It had been the breaking point. Just a second of doubt, and Callie had rushed to conclusions.
« What if we can't do what they need, what if they don't think we are good enough? »
« Are you saying you don't want a baby? Because, if that's the case, what are we doing here, why are we meeting with this lady who is going to help us find someone to make a baby, if you don't want a baby? »
« Don't put words in my mouth Callie, you're forgetting this was my idea! »
« Listen, you don't want to carry even after you know I can't, so we have to find another way then we find this, and you're finding all kinds of excuses, something else to put a damper on having another baby! Oh my god, it's so obvious! I can't believe it! Say it! Just say it Arizona! You don't want a baby!
Oh, how Callie had it so wrong. She wanted this baby. She had dreamt about it for months; she had even picked out some names.
Her wife had taken a moment of doubt and run with it; bitter words all aimed at Arizona.
And now Callie had taken Sofia across the country, and she had no say in it, she couldn't have an opinion, she had lost that right in the courtroom.
She loved her daughter so much; it hurt her more and more everyday she didn't get to see her or hug her, she missed her so much.
In the first weeks Sofia had left Seattle, Arizona had been devastated. Every day she struggled with her emotions. She waited for her daily call to her daughter, and as soon as the video call was over, she burst into tears, sobbing, crying herself to sleep.
It had been so complicated to find a weekend she could go to New York without disturbing Callie and Penny's amazing life.
In the end, Arizona had to wait more than 3 months before being able to settle on a week-end at the beginning of December.
It had been a wonderful time for mother and daughter. They had enjoyed each moment together, and Arizona had promised to try and come again in January.
The goodbyes were heart breaking, but Arizona had kept a beautiful smile on her face when Sofia had hugged her, sobbing in her arms, in front of Callie's apartment.
Arizona had managed to avoid her ex-wife for all her New York trip. She was supposed to be at the hospital, so Arizona had to bring Sophia back to a babysitter.
But the little girl wanted to show her Mommy her room. She still had a few hours before taking her flight back, so she had agreed.
She had knocked at the door and was surprised when Callie opened it with a big smile as she bent to hug their daughter.
« Mama, you are not working? » the little girl was happy to see her mother but knew that her mommy wouldn't feel comfortable now that she was here.
Even at only 7 years old, she was smart enough to feel the tension between them.
« I wanted to show Mommy my room. Can I? » she asked politely.
Callie was about to reply when she was cut off by her ex-wife.
« Come here baby girl! » Arizona said, biting her lip and waving her daughter over. The little girl ran to her and threw her arms round her waist, holding her tightly. « I think I'm going to be late for my plane. I have to find a cab and everything, so I don't think it's a good idea. But I will call you tomorrow and you can show me everything, anything you want, ok? »
« Ok. » Sofia replied sadly. « And you'll be back in January right mommy? »
« I will. I love you big girl. » Arizona kneeled, kissed her baby girl's cheek and stroked her hair. « I will ask Santa to bring your presents here, and the presents from Grandpa and Grandma too. Ok? I love you, never forget that... Go to Mama now, be a good girl for her. »
Sofia kissed her mother and ran back into the apartment, a little tear rolling down her cheek, Arizona turned and left without a look or a word for Callie, who stood there slightly taken aback..
« Arizona wait... » Callie's voice made the blonde's body tense but kept walking as if she didn't hear her. « Wait! »
She was pushing the elevator button excessively, but Callie came after her and managed to catch her as the doors opened.
« How... How was the weekend? » Callie asked. She didn't really know why she was doing this, why couldn't she just let Arizona leave, but it was too late now, so she went with it.
« Great. » Arizona replied neutrally.
Callie grumbled internally. The fact that her ex-wife had to be so distant and polite, it was scary. But she couldn't complain, she had done this.
« How are things in Seattle? » Callie asked again.
« Great, everything is great. » Was the only answer she received from a fleeing Arizona, who pushed the button hoping the doors would close quickly.
« I know you'd like to see her more, but our schedule is kind of crazy right now and I don't want her to take the plane on her own to visit you. » Callie said. « I... I think, if you'd like, you could come here in January and fly back with her for the weekend? »
« A six-hour flight, that would make it 12 hours on a plane for 48 hours with her. That's a great idea. »
And with that the doors closed.
Christmas Eve had been the hardest day she'd had in years.
The hospital was beautifully decorated, families were gathering around her. Everybody was happy, everybody was full of festive cheer.
But not her.
She wouldn't have a call from Sofia because of the big party at Penny's parents which would be ending late according to Callie. So, she would have a call in the morning from her daughter instead, that's if she hadn't been preoccupied and forgotten.
Arizona was called in that night around midnight, a woman was brought to the hospital. A young woman, 29 weeks pregnant, had fallen down the stairs and was now at the hospital.
It was a tricky case.
Mother and baby were in a critical condition. The woman had made the choice to have a baby on her own because she had always had partners that had let her down, leaving her disappointed and alone.
She didn't want to wait to find the right person that would share her life with her forever. Life just wasn't like that; it wasn't a fairy tale. She would have her daughter and they would be happy together, building her family on her own, they would be the happiest family ever.
Arizona had to work her magic, she worked for hours in the OR, doing everything she could to keep them alive and healthy. That's why she wasn't able to pick up the phone in the morning when Sofia called her.
Unfortunately, the fetal surgeon lost both mother and child….. on Christmas morning.
« Time of death 10.48. »
It was over.
She remained frozen in the OR, looking into space, the paddles still in her hands.
What was the purpose of life? That was the thing she was asking herself at this moment.
What had this woman done with her life? She was so young, her tiny baby hadn't even had a chance to live, why was this happening, what was the point?
She got in the scrub room and ripped off her gown before taking her phone and looking at the screen.
8 missed calls. She screwed everything up again. She laughed nervously at the irony of the situation. Callie's lawyer was right after all.
But she would call Sofia right away and apologize. Hopefully the little girl would be happy to see her, right? And she would tell her everything about her new toys...
« Hey Sofia! » Arizona said as the call was taken.
« Arizona it's Callie. I think you should call back later. She's playing with Penny's nephew right now; they are having a good time. »
« Can I talk to her please? I know she tried to call but I was in the OR for hours on a hard case. I was... »
« Listen, she was upset when she couldn't get you earlier, but now she's good. So maybe you could call back in a few days, give her some space. »
« She's my daughter. I want to talk to her. It's Christmas. » Arizona insisted. She didn't want to bend for Callie anymore. Giving her the cold shoulder wasn't enough.
« She's your daughter when it suits you. » Callie snapped, knowing which words would hurt her the most. « I have sole custody. You are Sofia's other parent only on paper. I could have stopped you from seeing her forever if I had wanted to. So please don't suddenly get all sentimental because it's Christmas. You'll call her tomorrow if you want. »
That was the end of the call.
It hit her like a truck coming out of nowhere. She felt the same emptiness as the day she lost shared custody of Sofia.
She walked to her office and closed the door behind her.
There were no more tears to cry, there were no more words to shout or yell. There was nobody who cared about what she was living at that moment.
This Christmas was the first Christmas she had spent alone. The first time she hadn't received any gifts, any special cards or share a delicious meal with someone.
Was her life going to be like this now?
And then she thought about her patient. The woman who just died in front of her only minutes before. She remembered her words.
She was tired of waiting for the good person, who might never come, and she wanted a family. So she did it. She made a baby.
Arizona, she'd had a good person by her side, someone to have another baby with. She'd had the woman of her dreams, the love of her life, wanting nothing more than to be a mother again.
But somewhere along the way, this version of her family had disappeared behind some weird excuse of suffocation, a misunderstanding, little things she had never seen coming, and it had ended, just like that.
That's how she got the crazy idea. And that's why a week later on the first day of the year she had decided just to do it. This unexpected notion, this desperate act to have a child on her own.
And that's how one month later she was staring at the blood test result with a stunned smiled on her face.
