He wasn't really sure if they were at the right address.
He remembered the house; Callie had sent pictures when they had moved in. But looking around, he was not sure anymore. But it can 't be anywhere else. His daughter would have told him if they had moved to another house, right?
« What is it honey? » Lucia asked as she got out of their car, the driver opening her door.
« Nothing, but… I don't see anything child related around here. Sofia should have her toys all around, or a swing. Look at that beautiful tree over there. She should have a tree house... »
« Carlos… don't start interfering in your daughter's life. You know where it led us last time. If there's no toys around it's maybe because it's on the other side of that lovely house. » the woman said. « Well, lovely is maybe not the term I should be using, but ... »
Carlos smirked at his wife. She was like him, trying to think about having the best for their daughter but knowing Calliope Iphigenia was an independent and strong woman. If she was happy with her family here, they would be happy too.
Carlos walked to the door and knocked as Lucia joined him. They were eager to surprise their daughters and granddaughter. It had been the decision to visit on a whim, but they wanted to, or you could say, needed to do it.
« Surprise! » they both chimed as the doors opened, revealing an elderly woman they had never seen. Their big smiles faded away quickly, but before Carlos could speak.
« Who are you? » the woman asked.
« I'm sorry to bother you Miss, but I thought Calliope or Arizona would be home. We're here to surprise them. » Carlos replied, thinking the woman was probably Sophia's nanny.
« I don't know who you're talking about. » The lady replied.
« We're looking for our daughter, Callie Torres. She's a surgeon, and her wife too. Dr Robbins. This is their house. » Lucia added.
« I think you are mistaken. I've been living here for a little over a year now. » The woman replied.
« Really? » Carlos asked, confusedly. « I mean, are you renting this house, or do know where the previous owners have gone? »
« I don't really know. I just know that they were selling in a hurry. They were divorcing and they wanted it to be sold as quickly as possible, that's how I got such a good deal on it. »
Both Torres parents gasped. Was this woman telling the truth? And was she talking about Callie and Arizona. The situation was so confusing.
Maybe they sold the house not long after buying it? Maybe the woman was lying to them, or maybe Callie and Arizona had not bought this house, and Carlos had got it wrong.
« Well, we're sorry to have bothered you Miss. Have a nice day... » Carlos politely stated as he took his wife's arm gently and walked with her to their car and asked their driver to go to the Grey Sloan Memorial.
« Well, that was awkward... » Lucia said. « Where are we going darling? »
« To the hospital were your daughter works. » Carlos replied, anxious, but not trying to show his wife. « If there's any place, we are sure to find one of them, it's there. At least I think so, well, I really hope so... »
…
« I can't deal with that now Bailey! » Arizona grumbled as she tried to get out of her bed, but her friend was preventing her from doing so.
« And what are you going to do? Fight me? You can't, you will lie down, doctors' orders! For at least a week! » Bailey retorted. « Oh no, the pout again, doesn't work Robbins, you've been doing that for three days already! »
« Well, I guess you should thank Calliope Torres for that. »
« Arizona, everything bad in your life is not because of Torres! » Bailey snapped.
Arizona sighed heavily. Of course she knew that, and she tried to stop herself from saying anything, but she couldn't so she just she blurted it out.
She had managed to relax at the hospital. Her blood pressure was close to normal, but Carina Deluca had prescribed her bed rest for a week, and she was not happy about that.
All she wanted was to be home with Sofia and plan a little for the birth of her babies.
But her mind was stuck on Callie. She was mad, sad, scared and had all sorts of mixed-up feelings. but however mixed up she was feeling, she was so disappointed in herself for still be totally in love with a woman who had done nothing but make it clear she didn't want anything from her. At least until that stupid Florida trip.
She sometimes regretted going to Florida, because of she hadn't gone she wouldn't feel obligated to admit to herself that she was still in love with Callie. The only good outcome of going was that she had her daughter back in her life. And now that Callie was back, she could have Sofia as often as she wanted.
But until when? Could she ever trust that her ex-wife wouldn't mess with her again?
When would she fall in love with some random person again and then mess with everything she had built?
Nothing was for sure, nothing was safe, but she was self-sufficient, she could survive, she could plan everything, she was now used to planning everything since the loss of her leg.
But Callie's behaviour was so unpredictable.
Stop, she had to stop the mental game she was having with herself. Stop linking everything to her ex-wife and move on with her children.
« I knew you wouldn't call them, so as they are your medical proxy, I did after you fainted. » Bailey replied.
« I did not faint... » Arizona replied. « And I already have enough to think about. I don't want to worry them. I don't want to bother anyone; I don't want to suffocate anyone... »
Bailey couldn't prevent a sad sigh at the view of tears again in the blonde's eyes. She needed support but was she willing to accept it.
« I want to sign discharge papers and go away from here, from my parents who are on their way. I want to be alone and focus on my children, with Sofia. » Arizona pleaded. « I don't need anyone. »
« That's where you are all wrong Robbins. That's what you did after that fateful plane crash. And look what happened after that... » Bailey said.
« Thank for the reminder, it's really helping... »
« Listen to me here! I'm saying that you didn't get help and you lost yourself. It was not really you who was so dark and bitter. It's not you who was mad at your wife and who did all those stupid things. You were traumatised, it was the trauma you went through Arizona, you had to deal with the loss of Sloan and losing a limb, it's something that changed you. AND,,, don't forget the 4 days you suffered in those woods, it's a big part of your PTSD. » Bailey tried to explain. « You were hurt, and you should have been taken care of properly by a trauma therapist, and I know you haven't seen one. But it's not too late. »
« Last time I saw a therapist, my wife left me after I poured my heart out to her. » Arizona sadly smiled.
« Stop mixing everything up. That's not how it works, and you know better than that. » Bailey almost warned her. « You are way stronger than you think, you just need a professional to help to help you see a brighter tomorrow and stop blaming yourself or blaming you know who. »
She handed the blond a card.
« He helped me through... personal stuff. And maybe he can do the same for you. » Bailey said. « Call him. And if he says he can't see you right away, tell him Miranda Bailey send you. »
….
Lunch at the cafeteria with colleagues she knew and appreciated was something she had missed in New York. She had made acquaintances, she had hung out with some coworkers, but they never really clicked.
So being back here at Grey Sloan and lunching with Meredith and Alex almost felt like a blessing.
« So how is she doing? » She tried to ask Alex, casually as possible.
« I don't know. She didn't want to see me. » he replied as he took a sip of his drink.
« Don't ask me, I can't say anything, Bailey will kill me. » Meredith replied. « You have to respect her boundaries Callie. »
« How is that even possible when we share a kid? » Callie grumbled. « I have her for all this week and I... »
« Don't tell me you are going to complain about that... » Meredith snapped. « You went to trial to fight to take Sofia away and now you are complaining ... »
« Sorry. » Callie stated.
She just wanted some updates and all she got was a telling off.
But she accepted the chastisement. She had done so many messed up things that she was sure she deserved it.
« I 'm sorry, I won't ask again. But please if happens or goes wrong I just want to know, to talk to Sofia and prepare her. »
« She's not going to die Callie... » Meredith sighed. « She's just on bed rest and monitoring. »
« Maybe I should have stayed in New York. She was better here without me around. » Callie replied. « Bailey is right. We are toxic to each other. »
« She was miserable. » Alex replied as he stood up, his lunch finished. « She has been since you left her. There were a few times when she was a little more like before. But then you dated her ex crazy girlfriend, then you dated that police guy, and after that Blake, and then after the trial, New York... She always arrived too smiley and energetic after she knew about those. That's how she tried to fool us. »
« Touché... » Callie simply said, as the trio walked out of the cafeteria.
There was nothing more to say. Callie had just added a little more guilt to the load she had been gathering throughout the past weeks.
As she was trying to focus on other things such as her next surgery, she gulped, seeing her ex-in-laws crossing her path.
« Callie? » Barbara asked as she looked at her, seeing her for the first time in years.
« Hello Bar... Ms Robbins, Colonel. » She greeted them awkwardly.
« Please, it's still Barbara... » the older woman replied as she hugged her former daughter in law.
Surprised by the gesture, Callie finally relaxed, remembering all the times Barbara had told her to call her by her first name.
The two women had shared a close bond after the wedding and Callie's mothers' denial of her own daughter's happiness.
Daniel Robbins stayed a few steps behind, not wanting to deal with her right now. He was here for his daughter and not for Callie Torres.
However, he had sided with her after he learned Arizona had committed adultery. But after the dirty custody battle and having seen Arizona so vulnerable, he didn't really want to know anything about this woman.
Trying to stop this emotional reunion, he coughed to make his presence known.
« Sorry Dr Torres we have to go and see our daughter. » he coldly said, grabbing his wife arm.
« Of course, I'm sorry I should have... » Callie ranted.
« Yes, you should have. » the older man said, as his wife and him walked away.
…..
Carlos and Lucia Torres were a little lost in this giant building. Sure, Carlos had already been here more than once, but it had changed, and to tell the truth he had really only been to the orthopaedic ward.
They were walking a little randomly, looking for a familiar face or someone to guide them, when Lucia Stopped and pointed discreetly to a couple walking with determination.
« Wait, aren't those Arizona's parents? I know I haven't seen them a lot, But I certainly remember her mother's smile and her father's gaze... » Lucia stated as Carlos frowned.
« I think you're right... What a coincidence it would be if we decided to show up today and them too.. » Carlos replied, still frowning. « Or maybe it means something has happened... »
« What are you talking about? » Lucia asked as her husband hurried his steps to follow the Robbins. He tried to reach them but just saw them entering an elevator and the doors closing.
« Carlos! Wait! » Lucia called him. « Look they are heading to the 4th floor. Let's just go there and try to find them. »
« Well, it's the fetal/Maternal ward. Arizona must be there. Maybe Calliope will be there too. Let's just wait for the next elevator. » Carlos replied, smiling reassuringly at his wife.
They went in the first elevator that came and the older man was feeling a fathers pride showing his wife where their daughter worked.
Callie was renowned surgeon in a very specific field and for the last month, Lucia had been amazed to discover what her daughter had accomplished.
She had also checked Arizona pedigree and it was very impressive.
The doors opened and in front of them stood Richard Webber, waiting for the elevator on his own.
« Dr Webber! » Carlos greeted him, hugging the surprised taller man.
« Hey, Mr Torres, right? » He remembered. « I'm... And what do we owe the pleasure of you visit us? »
Lucia looked at him and shook his hand.
« I'm Lucia Torres, Caliope's mother. I don't think we've met. » She said.
« Pleasure to meet you. » Richard replied, trying to understand what was going on. »
« We're here to surprise our daughters. » Lucia said, making Carlos smile at the way she was telling an almost stranger « our daughters ». « Dr Robbins works here I presume. Is she around? »
Richard was at loss. He somehow understood between the lines what seemed to be happening.
« I. Yes Sure, this is one of her departments, but I don't know where she is right now. » Richard replied. « But please follow me, I'll give you a tour. »
« Oh, it would be an honour, but we'd like to meet Arizona or Callie to make our presence known. » Carlos replied. « I know Arizona's parents are here, so we will just wait for them and Arizona, and maybe have a big family dinner tonight! »
The older Torres was so enthusiastic it made Richard feel bad he gulped with discomfort.
What did the former couple say, or rather not say to the Torres couple ?
« Sure please! I'll walk you to Dr Robbins Office, please... » Richard replied trying to win some time.
He led them away from Arizona's room, showing them around the floor, showing them random rooms, they had no interest in, trying to think of a plan.
« Here it is. » He says opening the blonde surgeon's office. « You go in and take a seat and I'll track her down and inform her she has visitors. »
The couple nodded in agreement and took seats in the office.
Richard sighed as he left and grabbed his phone, texting Bailey, 911 something came up...
….
Almost thirty minutes later, the Torres were still in the office. Carlos was beginning to lose patience and stood up.
« I'm going to look for her myself. She's the chief of this department, so someone must know where she is. In the meantime, try to call Calliope and tell her we're here. » Carlos asked his wife.
« But it would ruin the surprise... » A disappointed Lucia replied. « I could just tell her we have a surprise for her waiting at the hospital, and not tell her it's us. »
« Sure, whatever you want Darling. I'll be right back. » Carlos said.
He came out of the room, feeling something was up. He didn't know what, but he could feel it.
He went back to the place his path had crossed Richard Webber and tried to look around him.
He went to the nurse's station and asked politely.
« Excuse me Miss, I'm looking for Dr Robbins. »
« Hello sir. She will be in room 402 on the left at the end of the corridor.
« Thank you. » He smiled at the young woman and walked down the hallway, looking around, seeing pregnant woman, family gathered around a newborn and it made his heart swell.
Arizona was really an amazing doctor, saving babies and mothers. What was more beautiful and respectable than that?
As he arrived in front of the room, he approached slowly, not wanting to bother the patient during the examination Arizona should be giving.
But what he saw just made his jaw drop and his heartbeat faster than it should.
In the room were all the Robbins clan, looking at a screen, Arizona in a hospital gown, on the bed and a doctor showing them things on the screen. The blonde was crying, and her parents were silently restraining their emotions.
He took a step back, confused and not understanding what was happening, when a voice made him jump.
« Daddy? »
