One day the sun was rising in Rio de Janeiro and a tiny bird was watching it as it was tweeting. Then it said: "It's time." And it started flying and tweeting around waking other birds and they started singing and making music.

Brazilian Birds: All the birds of a feather

Do what we love most of all

We are the best at rhythm and laughter

That's why we love Carnival!

All so clear we can sing to

Sun and beaches they call

Dance to the music

Passion and love (A baby Spix's Macaw is sleeping in a tree hollow.)

Show us the best you can do! (The baby's tail starts dancing as it wakes him up.)

Everyone here is on fire (The baby enjoys his dancing tail.)

Get up and join in the fun (The baby dances in his hollow.)

Dance with a stranger

Romance and danger

Magic can happen for real in Rio

All by itself!

You can't see it coming (The baby sees a mother Golden Conure dropping her babies for a flight.)

You can't find it anywhere else (The baby Spix's Macaw gets worried about the babies but they learn how to fly.)

It's real in Rio

You know something else (The Golden Conure mother flies with her babies.)

You can't feel it happening

You can't feel it all by yourself (The baby Spix's Macaw prepares to take flight believing he can join the others.)

But then the song was interrupted as each bird was getting captured by smugglers. During the chaos, as the blue macaw chick got distracted and slipped out of the tree. During the fall, he made a vain attempt to fly, but fails and as lands on the ground scared he also gets captured. Alongside other captured birds, the blue macaw chick is caged, put on a plane, and almost brought to an exotic bird store to be sold. On the way, the back of the truck carrying him was forced open due to the driver not paying attention to the traffic light, and the crate containing the blue macaw child fell onto the streets of Moose Lake, Minnesota. The chick was afraid that he was going to die all alone until a human girl named Linda found him. She took him in her arms as she said: "It's okay. It's okay."

Linda lifted the blue macaw and shushed him as she was rubbing his head slowly and gently.

Linda: "I'll take care of you." And then she hugged him as the young macaw calmed him down.

(Present Days on Bird Island)

Red: "Hey Guys."

Bomb: "What is it Red?"

Red: "Do you want to go on vacation, just the three of us?"

Chuck: "I would love to."

Bomb: "Me too."

Red: "Well. I heard about an amazing place called Rio de Janeiro. It's the perfect place for our vacation."

Chuck: "OK. But how are we going to get there?"

Bomb: "And who will protect Bird Island from The Pigs?"

Red: "We'll ask The Mighty Eagle to take us there and Stella and her friends will protect the island while we're gone."

Bomb: "Sounds good. Let's do it."

(The Next Day in Minnesota)

Linda kept her blue macaw as she named him Blu, as they lived happily together for 15 years making good memories, as Linda was sleeping, she heard her clock beeping and she tried to shut it down as she even hit it multiple times: "Stupid clock." Then she unplugged it and she was confused why she kept hearing alarm noises: "Huh?" Then she saw the same blue macaw, grown, wearing her glasses and making the alarm noises. She pressed his beak which made him stop and make an alarm off noise and then he gave Linda her glasses which made her chuckle as she said: "Good morning, Blu."

As they were cleaning their mouths, Linda spat the water, while Blu gargled it and swallowed it with a burp which grossed Linda.

Linda: "Ew!"

Then Linda was trying to feed him some vitamins but Blu was dodging the spoon: "Ooh! Come here. Tyler Blu Gunderson! You know these vitamins are good for you." She got an idea and showed him the cerial box: "Ooh. What's this?"

Blu squawked happily and Linda put the spoon in his beak.

Linda: "Gotcha. Whoo!"

Blu turned the closed sign to open sign and after finishing their routine, he and Linda did their fist bump and they imitated booming explosion.

Linda: "Enjoy the new book."

The Bookstore Customer replied: "Thanks, Linda."

Linda: "Bye, now. Yes, Mom, I'd love to visit. But who would take care of Blu? Mom, they don't have Kennel's for parrots." She placed a plate of hot chocolate and cookies in front of Blu. "Here's your hot chocolate, Blu."

Blu was reading a magazine but when he heard about the hot chocolate, he took his eyes looked at Linda and squawked happily.

Linda: "Just how you like it. Plus, I don't trust leaving Blu with just anyone. No, I don't have a birdsitter..."

After Blu got out of his cage, he sniffed the hot chocolate and said: "Ah. This is the life." He took a look at the cup to see the marshmallow "The perfect marshmallow-to-cocoa ratio. One, two, three, four, five..." Before he could finish another marshmallow floated to the surface "six. Mmm." Blu took a sip of his cocoa until he a men got his attention. The men was slipping until he stopped and saw Blu, he gasped with smile going towards him saying: "Arara! Arara! Arara! Ara..." But he crashed into the window.

Blu: "Weirdo"

Linda noticed that and opened the door to see if he's okay: "Are you all right?"

The man entered as he groaned and shivered from the cold and he replied: "I'm not really built for this weather."

Linda: "Oh. Are you here for books?"

Tulio: "Books? No. No. I have come 6, 000 miles looking for him."

As Blu was about to take another bite from his cookie he looked at the men with confused face.

The men gave Linda a card (off-screen), revealing that he's a doctor ornithologist and his name is Tulio Monteiro.

Linda: "Doctor of ornithology?"

Tulio: "Ooh. He's magnificent." He started imitating a bird and mimicking birdcalls.

Blu said confused: "Linda, tell him I don't sound like that. Linda?"

Tulio and Blu were squawking as Linda believed that they're talking.

Linda replied surprised: "Wow. You're actually communicating."

Tulio: "Yes. Yes. I introduced myself and shook my tail feathers counter-clockwise, thus deffering to his dominance."

Blu: "You did what?"

Linda: "So, Dr. Monteiro, you..."

Tulio chuckled as he said: "Oh, no 'Doctor', please. Just call me Tulio. You know, your macaw is a very special bird. In fact, as far as we know, Blu is the last male of his kind."

Linda: "Really?"

Tulio: "Yes. And recently, we found a female, we hope to bring the two of them together to save their species."

Blu gulped since he never thought of having a girlfriend/wife and kids.

Linda: "Oh. Well, yeah, sure. When can she come over?"

Tulio: "Oh, no, no, no. We can't bring her. She is in Brazil. Blu must come to Rio de Janeiro."

Linda laughed nervously and asked: "Rio? Brazil?"

Blu got off Linda's hand and went to the globe to see where Rio is located while Linda said: "Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I never let Blu out of my sight. He needs me." And Blu got on her arm again after she came to him.

Tulio: "Oh, no. You... you misunderstood. It's all arranged. You will be with him every stop of the way. And I will be with you."

Linda: "Um, look, I know you're doing your job, but I can't... Well, Blu is very particular, and we have our little routine here, and we're not big on travel. Heck, he doesn't fly."

Tulio: "But, of course, he can fly." Then he took Blu and inspected him "He's a perfect specimen."

Linda: "Uh, what are you doing?"

Tulio: "Don't worry. Their natural instincts always take over."

Linda: "Wait! Wait, wait! No! No!"

Tulio threw Blu believing that he will fly but instead he squawked scared, flapping his wings as he feel.

Tulio replied shocked: "Well, almost always."

Linda: "Blu!"

Blu pulled his beak from the ground and said to Tulio furiously: "Did you really thought it will happen just like that?"

Linda took Blu and asked: "Are you okay?"

Tulio: "Perhaps he's too domesticated."

Linda: "It was very nice of you to stop in and squawk around and throw my bird, but now it's time for you to go."

Tulio: "Well, I... I'm very sorry. I... I'm very sorry, but... wait, wait. Linda. Linda." Linda walked Tulio out of her shop and he said: "This could be our last chance."

Linda: "Have a safe flight."

Linda shuted her shop door in his face and walked away.

As she was about to pick Blu, Tulio pleaded: "Linda, please, listen to me. If we don't do this, his whole species will be gone."

Tulio threw his business card through her shop door post flap and opened it showing his eyes saying: "Just think about it."

Later at night Blu was reading books about flying: "'Natural instincts.' There's nothing natural about being thrown halfway across a room. Well, I'll show him. Hmm." He turned the next page and said: "I can do this. I just have to work out the physics. I have quadrated my vector angles." He wrote some things on a notebook during his research. "I have adjusted for wind shear. Positive reinforcement. Good. Okay. Let's see. Flaps open." Blu opened his wings and then said: "Perfect. Landing gear." He wiggled his claws and said: "Check. Tail flaps." He flaped his tail and said: "Operational." After he took a position and looked at it he said: "And, actually, not bad. This is it. Let's fly." He activated Christmas Lights he placed on the table to make it look like an airport and said as he started walking: "Just keep it simple. Thrust, lift, drag and weight. Thrust, lift, drag, weight." Then he speeded up to get off the table "Thrust, lift, drag, weight. Thrust, lift, drag..." But he stopped as he got scared saying: "W-w-w-wait!" He grabbed the Christmas Lights with his beak and said: "Phew" But they got unplugged which made him fall with them: "Ow!"

Linda heard the noise and went to check on it: "Blu?" And then she saw Blu wrapped up in Christmas Lights.

After Linda freed Blu (off-screen), they stayed awake until she decided to talk to him about Tulio's project.

Linda: "I promised I would always look out for you, didn't I? Have I ever broken a promise?" Blu looked at Linda with worried look and she replied: "I'm scared, too, but I wouldn't make you do this if it wasn't the right thing to do. What do you say, Blu?" She raised her arm as fist to do their fist bump and he went for it.

Linda: "That's my big, brave boy. And we'll be back home before we even know it."

However they didn't knew that their arrival would be the begging of an adventure.
