Chapter 10
The seven champions had been practicing in the lake with gillyweed for a week when Bagman came up to the school to give them the official briefing, "We'll be hiding an enchanted token for each of you on a pedestal at the bottom of the lake. Since it's going to be so chilly we are providing the swimsuits and they will be enchanted with heavy duty warmth enchantments. The first one back wins ten points, the second gets eight, and the third gets six. No one else will get any."
Fleur raised a hand, "Do we have to use the tournament supplied suits? We are using gillyweed so the water temperature will not be a problem."
Bagman leered at her, "Yes, you do. We went to the trouble and expense of purchasing them and having them enchanted so it would be very rude for you to refuse." He paused a moment then added, "Oh, and it will be how we track your progress underwater. We will have a screen set up for spectators that will show your locations with colored dots. It will help keep the crowd entertained and make sure you aren't cheating somehow." He pulled a mokeskin pouch out of a pocket and tossed it to Cedric, "Your suits are in here." Then he wandered off muttering about finding a drink.
Cedric opened the pouch and removed seven bags, each with a name tag attached. He passed them out then opened his and frowned.
Harry pulled out a small golden suit that reminded him of the one Angelina created for him, "He's got to be kidding right? This thing is tiny."
Cedric pulled out a black suit of similar size, "I'm afraid he isn't joking Harry."
Fleur scowled and also pulled out a white thong, "You are lucky. Look what he gave me."
Harry blushed, "Where's the top?"
Angelina pulled out a red thong, "There isn't one, or much of a bottom either."
"I'm underage," Daphne said scowling. "If he gave me half a suit my father might call him to answer before the wizengamot. Or worse." She opened her bag and pulled out a green triangle top and thong, "Well it's certainly less covering than I would like but after seeing yours I guess I can call myself lucky. What did you get Luna?"
Luna said, "Good question Daphne. I'm also underage but my father isn't on the wizengamot. He does own a newspaper though so let's see if this suit is newsworthy or not." She reached in her hand and pulled out a blue triangle top and thong. "Bagman is quite the pervert, isn't he?"
The other girls nodded and Fleur turned to Krum, "It's your turn, Viktor."
He pulled out a purple speedo, "As I thought." He shrugged, "it does seem to have a warmth enchantment on it."
"I am still glad for the gillyweed," Fleur said. "I would be freezing otherwise and perhaps I will be leered at less after I have taken it."
"We can hope so," Angelina said.
When Fleur showed her headmistress the suit the woman grimaced, "I had thought the English to be prudes so I didn't look into what sort of suits Bagman was buying. I apologize for this lapse but I am afraid you will have to wear it and at least attempt the challenge."
Fleur sighed, "Bon, I shall imagine myself on a French beach and attempt to ignore the boorish comments I am sure to hear." She went back to her room in the carriage wondering if Angelina was having better luck. Somehow, she doubted it.
Angelina was showing McGonagall the suit Bagman gave her, "Do I really have to wear just this? In front of strangers with cameras?"
"This is a disgrace!" Minerva McGonagall said. "I will go talk to the headmaster about it. Go about your business, I will tell you what he says in the morning at breakfast."
The next morning the Gryffindor head came up to Angelia as she entered for breakfast, "I'm sorry to tell you this but I cannot get any of those old fools to change it. The only one who agreed was the French head."
Angelina rolled her eyes, "I guess the rest are dirty old men. Thank you for trying, professor."
"I fared no better," Fleur said from behind her. "I plan to wear a large terry cloth robe until I take my gillyweed. That should help some."
"True," Angelina agreed. "And once we leave the water we can put them back on saying we are cold."
"It shall certainly be the truth," Fleur said. "If not the entire truth. I am glad you like my plan. I shall tell Luna if you will tell Daphne?"
Angelina nodded, "Sure. Shall we tell the boys? Harry looked less than happy with his suit."
Fleur said, "Personally I think it will look great on him but I agree that he need not share the view with the general public if he does not wish it. It will just lead to more drooling among the female students."
Angelina laughed, "True." She walked up to the Slytherin table and told Daphne the plan. A few of the boys at the table groaned.
Daphne said, "That sounds like a good way to save as much modesty as we can, despite the wishes of most of the boys."
"Are the boys doing that too?" one of the Slytherin girls asked.
"Not as far as I know," Angelina said.
"Good," the girl replied. "I want to see Cedric in that suit." Then she and her friends giggled.
The day of the event there were disappointed groans and a few boos when the audience saw the girls wearing thick, fluffy robes to the pier where Bagman was waiting.
"I wish you'd told me this plan," Harry said.
"Several of the female spectators asked us not to do so," Fleur said.
"I was also asked not to tell Cedric or Viktor," Angelina said.
"I'll take that as a compliment," Cedric said.
Bagman also looked disappointed but said nothing about their attire, "When I fire the starting gun you will have one hour to retrieve your token from the bottom of the lake. The tokens are colored the same as your suits. As previously mentioned the suits contain tracking magic. The screen floating over the lake will track your progress. The first one back will receive ten points, the second will receive eight, and the third six. There are no points for anyone arriving after that or after an hour has passed. Good luck champions!" He walked back onto shore and drew his starting pistol then fired it.
All seven contestants took their dose of gillyweed and the ladies dropped their robes after the transformation was complete.
Cedric was back first with his token and Fleur was second. Harry was third, coming in a few seconds faster than Angelina.
Bagman leered as the girls exited the water then held up his microphone to announce the results, "Cedric Diggory came in first for ten points and is now at twelve points, Fleur Delacour received eight points for second place bringing her score to thirty-two, Harry Potter received six points for third place bringing his score to twenty-six. This leaves the delightful Fleur in first place, Harry potter in second place, and Luna Lovegood in third place with twenty. The tokens you have retrieved have a clue to the fifth and final event. Thank you all for attending. Have a great evening."
Harry looked at his token after he dried off and changed into regular clothes. It was a metal disc with a series of musical notes on one side and a bearded man on the other. He shrugged, "I guess I'll show Hermione and see what the others say."
Hermione said, "It looks like a musical score." She waved her wand at it and music played.
"I know that one," Daphne said. "That's 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' by Grieg." She looked at her own token, "Can you check mine as well?"
Hermione checked them all and they all had the same bit of music on one side and a man who was presumably the mountain king on the reverse.
"Well we have a lead to research now," Cedric said. "Library trip?"
"Hogwarts library is supposedly very fine," Fleur said. "Hopefully that is a truer rumor than the one about it being safe." In the library they found lyrics to go with the specific notes on their tokens.
Cedric read them out loud, "The mountain king roams, All alone in here, But he's not the only one, Lost inside, Forever hidden from the sun."
"Well that's not ominous at all," Daphne said.
"Sounds like some sort of maze or tunnels," Harry said.
"Dark ones," Viktor added.
"Even I know a light spell," Luna said. "We can deal with darkness."
"And the point me spell will get us out," Angelina said.
"Or help us find whatever token we need for this last event," Fleur said.
"There's usually a trophy for the final event," Hermione said. "But they've made so many changes and bad decisions I'm not sure what they'll do."
"And we have one more dance before the final event," Cedric said.
"A maypole dance," Luna said. "It sounds festive."
"Would you, and Fleur, be my dates to this dance as well Luna?" Harry asked.
"Yes," Luna said. She looked at Fleur.
Fleur smiled, "I will go with both of you."
Viktor turned to look at Hermione, "Vill you go vith me?"
Hermione smiled, "Yes, Viktor. I will go with you."
Daphne said, "I should go hunt up my twin of choice then. Why don't you come with me Angelina to make sure I ask the right Weasley?"
Angelina smiled, 'Sure, it can be hard to tell them apart."
Cedric said, "I'm off to go ask Cho then."
