Chapter 68: Trials and Surprises
Yukino's POV
Finishing the final check up Hakaku gave a simple nod. "Everything seems good. I'll head back to the shrine and report everything that has transpired, is that alright with you my lady?"
"It would be good to let them know what is happening. Also please just call me by my name."
"That would be a huge disrespect, my lady."
Letting out a sigh, a quick knock at the door caught my attention. "Come in," I immediately responded.
"I apologize for the sudden visit but I believe you may want to come with me," Baki said before he could even completely open the door. Although I was confused I knew him enough to follow without question. Immediately hopping off the bed, I grabbed my shawl and motioned for Hakaku to follow.
・・・
On the way there Baki gave me a quick rundown of what has been going down for the past week since the interrogation. First, they rooted out everyone who had succumbed to bribing and punished them for it. Secondly, they contacted Konoha about the organization that they also happened to be looking into, and were grateful for the information. Finally, the Tsuchikage was informed about what the daimyo had done. It all somehow led to this sudden meeting by the Suna Council whose main subject would be me.
"Why is your guard with you?" Baki asked as we were running up the stairs.
"It's a show that I have backing and some status."
"Hm." He said in response as we arrived and spotted Ebizō as he was also heading to the meeting. Seeing me the elder gave a simple nod and held out his arm for me to take as I guided him in and to his seat.
As we entered I calmed my breathing and glanced around the room. Spotting Gaara and Kankuro in the room I took in their confused expressions probably wondering as to why I was here and from just that I knew that they most likely weren't aware of the true nature of this meeting.
"Oh, Miss Uzumaki, you grace us with your presence." Hiraku, one of the members who previously showed me animosity, now wore a huge smile on their aging face. Something that surprised me but I hid behind a neutral mask. Now this made me even more curious. What exactly made him switch up so quickly?
"We were about to request your attendance." Gōza, another such member added.
"Quiet, what is this meeting truly about?" Gaara asked the council once everyone took a seat. All except me as I lacked my own but that didn't matter. Sucking the water out of the air I made my own seat and sat beside Ebizō who smiled widely in response.
A few gave a glance in my direction but didn't say anything as Gōza cleared their throat to draw everyone's attention. "Well, ahem, Kazekage-sama although we deliberated the matter after she passed the exam we saw no benefits of allowing a foreigner to marry into the Kazekage line," As he spoke I noticed Gaara's eyes darken as they spoke about me like that in front of my face. Sneaking a tendril under the table I tugged at his pant leg making him glance in my direction. Sending him a subtle shake of my head I wanted to wait and see what caused this switch. "...what we mean to say is that we saw few benefits. However, after this week, we realized how wrong we were. Due to her name earned at the great war, we believed she had only the skill of a healer; we didn't know her skills went beyond that. Saving herself from someone who took her and had planned to do her harm there is no doubt she would have what it takes to protect your future children. Not to mention the rewards that Konoha had given us for the intel she gathered and the reparation Iwagakure has given us we believe she has more value than we had originally believed." He said quite a few things that caught my attention. "You!" He said nearly startling me and those who had zoned out after his long ramblings. "We heard you are a guard and medic from her homeland tell us what you think of your master."
"..." Hearing silence and seeing some of the council frown in disapproval at his lack of response, I glanced at Hakaku and realized he was waiting for my permission. As such I leaned into the role. "Answer the council's questions honestly."
"As you wish, my lady." He replied curtly. Hearing this I could see the smile in some of the council's faces as they murmured to each other wishing the youth of today had that level of respect. 'I'll make sure to reward Hakaku for this somehow.'
"Ahem, so answer boy what do you think of your master? Both your personal opinion and your opinion on her health as a medic-nin."
"There are no amount of words to describe how profoundly I and the rest of my home respect my lady. She has provided us with a means to survive and a place to call home. She is the heart of our very land and mother to us all…" Realizing he was going overboard he coughed with embarrassment. "As for my lady's health, she recovered fully from the drugs the morning after she was found. I have only stayed as long as I have just to give our elders some peace of mind when I report back."
"Elders, you say? What can you say is her dynamic with them? Positive or negative?"
"It is not in my position to be privy to such private interactions; however everyone is aware of how harmonious their relationship is."
"I see, I see, splendid. She is exactly what we have been looking for. You'll be in good hands once you marry Gaara, Ms Uzumaki." Knowing that this was coming but still surprised to hear it I nearly choked on my own spit.
Baki then interjected. "Isn't this decision too rash? She belongs to another land and our only responsibility is to make sure she regains her health to return to it."
Sajō, another council member, only smiled at his worries and brushed it off. "Don't worry once they hear of what we have to offer they are sure to agree without anything more to say."
Keeping my composure as everyone else spoke as if the matter was set and done I raised my hand and spoke. "Although I am looking to have an heir of my own to take over my position within the clan I cannot make any marriage decisions without my elder's approval." I lied knowing full well that they could care less who I married as long as I had heirs who inherited my abilities. Yes, they would be happy if she had children with another Uzumaki but they cared more if she had any children in general.
"Well, that isn't an issue. If you wish to bring your clan we are sure we have enough space to accommodate them in Sunagakure. But if you wish to remain in seclusion we will be happy to lend out some goodwill to a small ally of ours." Hiraku spoke as if I had already accepted. Hearing this I bit my cheek to maintain my composure as the council patted themselves on the back.
'What if I'm promiscuous or what if my elders ask of me to have a child with someone of their choosing while married to Gaara will you allow that?' The question formed itself in my mind as a way to explain my biggest secret but I knew the dangers of asking such a question. If the answer was no then the next time I see them in the future this question would follow me and serve as a representation of my character and that of my land. 'Ugh. Why must politics be so difficult?' Looking over at Gaara I also knew that such a question would hurt him. Looking at his face I could see the struggle as he whispered to Kankuro trying to come up with something to get us both out of it without hurting my honor. 'I guess that's why I fell for you. You are always such a gentleman…' I knew then I had to be the one to take the first step. 'You aren't ready for children and I am not ready to leave my home for this place. I couldn't wait anymore. I've left Haruki waiting for six years now.'
Letting out a sigh I turned to Ebizo who was rubbing his head at the headache before him. "I'm sorry my dear for this. My old brain is trying to come up with something, don't worry."
"Thank you for your help but I will handle this," I spoke softly to him. Raising my head and sitting up straight I cleared my throat. Putting on a smile I looked at the council. "My… you all seem to act as if I have already accepted."
"Why would you reject? This is the Kazekage's hand we are offering."
"Do you know how many ladies currently desire to have this opportunity?"
"He has both power and status. What else could you ask?"
They quickly turned on me angered at my attempt to turn down their oh so generous offer.
"You have me mistaken esteemed council. Are you aware of my current situation and standing among the Kage? It is not the most favorable per se and I fear it will only serve to sour the relationship in this time where peace is trying to be established…" I trailed off enough to seem as if I was not done speaking but enough for someone to jump in to get an opinion out.
"Ha, that is no issue there is no need for you to concern yourself with that as your position will not put you in contact with any of the Kage if you or us decide so."
"Right you are, as for your punishment we are fully aware of it and we have to say it works wonderfully for us. Thirteen years of house arrest is no issue and I'm certain motherhood will help you pass the time…"
As they talked about how motherhood will be my sole duty trapped here I zoned them out as I resisted the urge to not clench any of my muscles in frustration. Once their yapping subsided enough I let out a laugh. "Oh, my apologies, it's just that you interrupted me before I could finish." I guess there was no choice now. "But even though that would work I cannot bear any children with your Kazekage. It is not a problem with any of you or your Kazekage but an internal issue back home."
"Ha, if you were going to string us along like this, why even take part in the bride selection?"
"My apologies for that but I have been made aware of your esteemed self's decision to only select a bride of this land. My elders had requested I take part for the sole reason as a test to see if my old teachings still remained. I had not expected to be genuinely considered as a bride worthy of the Kazekage. However, I must nonetheless reject this incredible proposal…" Standing up I pushed away my chair and clutched my shawl to prevent it from slipping off. "Hah… It is a shame but news of this wouldn't be announced until later… but a groom has already been chosen for me." Shaking my head wistfully I continued. "Although the Kazekage's bloodline has the magnet release it is not something my elders desire. All they wish for is for the clan's revival. It is shameful to admit but I share but a fraction of my clan's bloodline… marrying and bearing children of someone who shares not even a drop of it will be a loss to my clan but a gain for yours. As such my elders will not accept such a union. As the sole heir, I must obey their wishes. I apologize but this issue is over. No amount of offers will convince my elders." Dissipating the water, I was prepared to walk away.
"Stop!" Surprised at the tone, I looked at the council member who dared yell like that and saw that it was Ryūsa. "You best watch your tongue, young lady. It is not good to lie."
Finding it such an odd thing to say I suddenly remembered the meaning behind his words and laughed at what he was insinuating. "I find your attempt at having me listen for a while longer amusing. However, I'm sad to inform you that that seal has been useless for a couple of years already." Hearing this I could see the confusion of some of the newer council's faces.
"Impossible! How could it–!"
"You seem to forget just what my bloodline is known for. There is no way my relatives would have allowed such a weak seal to be placed on me and risk causing me irreversible damage. If you still don't believe that I'm telling you the truth I would show you my tongue but that would be improper." I chuckled.
"How dare you! Do you know what we offer–!"
"Enough!" Gaara stood up. "Do you have no shame? How can you call yourselves elders and show such disrespect to someone we call a guest!" As he got their attention I gave him a nod and left without worry, making sure Hakaku followed.
3rd POV
A keen-eyed member of the council noticing her distinguishing hair disappear past the doorway turned to Kankuro who was trapped in the middle trying to calm down everyone. "Kankuro-sama, chase after her and tell her to wait at least until the end of the month!" One of the council members yelled across the table. Hearing this Kankuro noticed that she had left and followed after her not because he was asked but to see if she was alright.
When he left the council sighed. "If she stays until the end of the month we will still have time to convince her to stay."
"Enough," Ebizo spoke, having listened to them bickering about not having their way. "Our matters are unrelated to her and it is clear that they desire something more than land or support. They seek the restoration of their clan and pride. Have you all not learned a thing about our past? After the Third Kazekage went missing and our village started to decline the main issue wasn't who would be the Fourth Kazekage's bride but how we would restore our strength and show others we weren't weak. It is a shame we lack the one thing they truly desire but who are we to push for them to go along with an agreement that doesn't benefit them in the long run?" Standing up, Baki stood up and walked over to aid the elderly man. "I am fine on my own." Ebizo rejected his help.
"Baki, what else do you have to say on the matter?" The council asked the quiet man.
"The honorable elder explained things better than I could have. We have no right to force someone into such an arrangement. If we do and the other Kage come to learn of this their opinion of our village will surely sour."
・・・
Returning to the manor Yukino thought back on the meeting just moments ago and at how insistent they were. Letting out a groan she rubbed her temples feeling so grateful her elders weren't like that. Looking over at the pale wolf who had become her shadow the last week she smiled as she saw the furrow on his brows. "If you feel like saying something I'm all for it."
And talk he did. "Unbelievable, how! I mean how could they talk about you like that in front of your face? Not only that they acted as if we would say yes! Not to assume your opinion, but they took away the option of choice." He began to panic waiting to see if he was right to continue.
"Listen, I keep telling you to forget the formalities, just speak your mind and ignore our positions. I personally only follow formalities for appearance's sake."
At this, he let out a small exhale in relief. "Looking at how insistent they were, I do have a few concerns… What if they try to do something to keep you here? You'll become like a bush warbler in a rich man's home." Shaking his head immediately he took a deep breath in. "No that cannot be, we cannot accept our lady to be subject to such a life. If you permit it I would like to return immediately to inform the shrine."
"I appreciate your words but don't worry, nothing they may try to pull will keep me trapped, only I can do that to myself. As for the shrine I agree, at this point, I am overstaying my welcome the sooner I leave the less trouble I will cause." Shifting her weight she moved to stand in front of him, holding up her hands in a mild-mannered shrug. "In your professional opinion, what is your assessment of my health?" She gestured to herself feeling pretty alright but hoping for a second opinion.
"In my professional opinion, aside from the sedative weakening you for a while everything about you seems to be healthy even your muscle mass seems to be returning at an astounding rate considering you were able to break chains without using chakra."
"Oh, that well there's actually a trick to it…" realizing she was about to deviate from the topic that mattered she cleared her throat. "Ah… that's for another time if you ask at the base they'll teach you for now I just need the shrine's permission to start my trial."
"I will give that a look once I return home as for the other injuries. The slight bruising on your ankles will naturally heal but you shouldn't be in any more pain as you heal over the next week. That is all. I will compile a report and hand it to you in case you wish to change or add anything." Giving a slight bow he headed to the reception room attached to her room where he had chosen to sleep to keep an eye on her health and to keep guard.
Standing by the doorway she glanced at the main entrance sensing already the puppet master heading their way. As soon as he opened the door she greeted him. "Ah, Kankuro I see you managed to escape."
Surprised, he shook his head. "I should be asking you. Are you alright?"
"..." Taking a moment she crossed her arms and looked up genuinely thinking about it. "I've been through worse. It's new definitely, I don't know whether to be flattered that I'm so desired or disgusted that it's because I'm just seen as cattle." Glancing at him he shrunk under her piercing gaze.
"I'll take that as a no then."
"Mhm. But hey, it's alright it's about time I leave anyway." Noticing the way his mouth tightened as he held back his words she sighed. "Alright let me guess the council wants me to stay to convince me one last time." Giving a slight nod she let out a groan. "How long."
"A month."
"..." Thinking about it she weighed the benefits. "Sunagakure received a reward for the intel, right? A reward I should have received."
Catching what was being insinuated very clearly he sighed. "Fine, you get to keep whatever the council gives you no strings attached. I'll make sure to convey this to them."
"Perfect. Oh but one more thing, what did Iwagakure give you?"
"A couple of old scrolls that the Tsuchikage confiscated from the Daimyo as punishment. The sealing team hasn't been able to decipher them yet."
"Old scrolls you say? Alright, let me take a look at them."
"But–"
"They were reparations for the hit the Earth Daimyo placed on me. I should have a say on whether or not I accept their apology."
"Fine."
"Glad we are on the same page." She smiled, "I'll come by the intelligence division's building to take a look at them."
"How did you–"
"You forget that I used to keep this village's secrets." Humming at the thought of what they gifted she noticed the kicked puppy look in his eyes and sighed. "I'll think about my remaining stay. I will warn you it will heavily depend on what the shrine says. If they are in a hurry it will take at least two weeks for me to return. I'll do what I can to stay for the month just to get them off your backs."
"Thank you…" he let out a sigh of relief. "You don't understand how much help this is."
"Don't thank me yet for all you know I'll want everything Iwagakure sent." She chuckled seeing a small smile bloom on his tired face. "I'll see you later, I'm going to take a rest." Agreeing with that idea they split and headed off to their own sides.
・・・
Hearing a knock at the door she already knew who it would be so she let them in. "I'm sorry for what happened." Gaara sighed once he was in and the door was closed.
"You don't have to apologize. I went along with the plan and it backfired. We never expected them to accept."
"..." Crossing his arms he shook his head and let out a sigh. "It's my fault for being powerless."
"It's not your fault when it comes to unreasonable people. If they were reasonable your life would be easier." He chuckled at that and faced her before looking down, something else was on his mind but was unable to bring himself to say it. "I guess my lie convinced even you huh." Seeing his eyes widen as she hit the mark she chuckled.
"How did you know?" he asked.
"Mmm, just a guess.," she teased.
"So… your elders don't have any plans like that for you?"
"Highly doubt it, they don't care who it is as long as I end up with an heir. As long as the child inherits my abilities all is well. Also, you may not be aware of this, but with how much science has improved, there have been leaps in the medical field. Even when it comes to fertilization." Going into a brief explanation of in-vitro fertilization he listened attentively. "The few risks of it is that there is a chance of failure and having to go through it again. The other is that it can lead to having more than one child at a time."
"...Are you planning on doing it?"
"No, not yet." She lied, thankful for this discovery in medicine as it created the perfect cover for her when her son came and people outside began to ask. That is for when the day came where she would have to let them explore the outside world. She could've brought it up in the meeting but it would have just given them an excuse for her to accept their proposal since it was a solution to her "clan restoration" problem. "But you should be careful. I wouldn't put it past those old farts to try out this method… if they think it's alright. You know what, never mind, they'll probably come up with all sorts of reasons why they shouldn't, preferring the old-fashioned way."
"Glad to know I'm safe." He chuckled. Sighing he reached out for her hand. "...I'll sort this out, just give me a little bit more time."
"I'm alright with being on their bad side. They're old, they'll age out of their positions one day." She chuckled but noticing his silence she sighed and gently squeezed his hand. "Gaara, it's alright. The original deal was 5 months just to recover but we both knew it would be sooner than later. I'm healthy, I'm ready, and I have people who've been waiting years for me to return. It's time."
"I know…" Looking down at her hands he remembered the promise but couldn't help but wish for a bit more time.
Yukino's POV
Looking over the letter Hakaku prepared I made a small addition asking the elders or the shrine to write a formal statement "confirming" what I lied about to the council. Sending him back home I led him out of the village and got permission to walk out with them just far enough to kick up the sand with my water tendrils and some wind ninjutsu. Creating enough of a cover to create a portal back home.
Then the wait began.
Going first to check out the scrolls I went over each one of them and as I should have expected they didn't send anything too important. However, among it all, I did find something small, a scroll relating to some Uzumaki ruins. Considering they sent it the place must've already been cleared with whatever of value they found already taken and confiscated. But from experience, I know that there was always an unassuming front hiding a secret within. This was definitely worth something. Claiming my prize I froze feeling a pit in my stomach knowing that this could be a trap. If I went, it could be used as proof of me avoiding my punishment but if I sent someone they could quietly be captured and interrogated. This was honestly quite a conundrum but an easy one to solve by calling in a few favors. With my foxes known, I'll ask the Kinukami clan to send a spider or two to investigate before looking over the memory and sending someone into the ruin itself without risking detection.
Figuring out a plan for that problem I looked over the scrolls again and chose a couple more to throw them off my plans. "I'll take these," I said, holding up three scrolls out of the dozen available.
"But we haven't even decoded them yet."
"I'm a bit rusty but I can tell it's just an old language. It will take a while if you don't know but I'm able to tell enough to find it intriguing." I lied. Having been taught the language from a young age it honestly made my life easier when it came to decoding as the learning of the lost tongue was like a code in itself and the root of the encoding techniques that branched from it. It caused me quite a headache as a child but knowing now of its benefits it was worth every bit of it.
"Are you sure you don't want us to decode it for you?"
"It would make my life easier…" I hummed to myself pretending to consider the idea, "But I need something to pass the time so I'll have to reject that offer." Taking my prizes I sealed them in my arm to prevent any switch-up or attempted steals on my way back to my room.
Surprisingly none of that happened.
Week later…
In my room, I folded up my completed trial outfit and set it on the coffee table not knowing when I would get the go-ahead. Looking over the few items I opened the small pouch once again counting the items and seeing if I could fill it with anything else. In addition to the trial, the stone I once carried would be given to me again, meaning that my access to my portals would be cut off which would also prevent me from accessing any food, items, or money I had in there. It was done so in the name of fairness but it complicated my plans slightly as I had a few stops I had in mind to go to during my trial. But what could I do, that just meant I had to be more careful.
Looking over at the map by my vanity once more I traced my finger over my routes, paths I could see had rivers making it a good food source. Of course, I knew my pursuers would be thinking of that too so I was ready to sacrifice one route for another if it came to it. 'I should be alright if I miss a few days to eat. As long as I have water I will make it.'
Knock knock
Snapping out of my thoughts I focused on the chakra on the other side of the door. Sucking in some air as I recognized the people beyond it I practically jumped over the coffee table as I ran to open the door.
Swinging the door open I saw familiar but slightly aged faces, holding my breath my vision became blurred. "Aww you really missed us." Kichi giggled as she closed the gap with a hug. "There, there don't worry, you'll be home soon."
"How are you doing?" Nori asked, guiding everyone into the room, closing the door behind us.
"Oh true, we saw the report." Kichi said, bringing it up as I got them each a cup of water. "We didn't think things would develop like this." Handing her the cup she gulped it down.
As she drank, Nori pulled out a letter from his clothes. "We brought the reply you wanted. Do you think this will be enough?"
"No," Yukino smiled, taking the closed letter. "I doubt it, but if the council does give you something we have permission to receive those gifts without worry."
"Hm. Doubt it will be much, it will probably be just enough to try to impress small town people." Nori sighed before taking a sip of water with such joy that he went for another.
Seeing their reactions I let out a chuckle. "How was the trip here?" I asked, already knowing the answer from how dehydrated they were.
"Hate it." Kichi gasped coming up for air. "So, so hot."
"Never make us cross it again." Nori sighed as his parched insides hungrily absorbed the water. "Now to do what we came here for. The sooner we get this over with the sooner you can return. Are you ready?"
"I was wondering when you would ask… but rest today you need the energy." Once they were conked out in the guest rooms I brought up their request to Kankuro who agreed to arrange a place for us to go to. Thanking him I suggested having it ready by the time the sun rose knowing well the two shrine workers' routine.
・・・
As expected they came at the crack of dawn. Guiding them to one of the closed training arena's here in Sunagakure I noticed the buff shinobi waiting for us outside. Shira, a shinobi excelling in taijutsu and Gaara's taijutsu instructor, unlocked the door for us and let us in. Job completed, he bid us a good day before he left.
Entering the training arena I looked around hearing rustling behind me as they took out their scrolls and unsealed their weapon of choice. "Ready?" Nori asked, calling for my attention.
Turning my head to him he tossed a naginata my way and I caught it. "I should be asking you two that," I grinned as I twirled the spear-like weapon in anticipation at the chakraless fight before her.
3rd POV
As the three began the test and the two shrine priests began to circle Yukino like hungry sharks. They were so focused on the task before them that they didn't even take their eyes off each other even acknowledge the two shinobi that walked in to watch the fight. The moment the sound of the door shutting echoed across the room the two shrine priests ran to the red haired woman. The miko swung low aiming for her feet to throw her off balance and the head priest aimed for the woman's shoulder both coming in from different directions forcing the woman to think quickly.
Weapon in hand she tossed it up and jumped forward towards the head priest, a hand reached for his naginata while the other reached for his shoulder. Using the force of his swing she tensed up her arm to help swing her body behind him. Jumping on his back she jumped up grabbing her weapon before quickly jumping away to gain some space to reassess her opponents.
The two priests smiled and shot each other a glance as they changed tactics.
"They fight pretty well. I thought they were priests." Kankuro commented leaning on the railings as he watched the fight below. The head priest had precise and strong strikes aiming at any openings or weaknesses Yukino exposed or seemed to show as a result of his partners much more agile and wide strikes. Both priests worked in sync moving swiftly and around each other giving their target little breathing room as she fended off one attack after the other.
Watching from above Gaara agreed with his older brother's thoughts. "They must be, look at their garbs." He said spotting the red and white outfit the brown haired woman wore as she twirled behind her partner, using him to stay out of Yukino's line of sight to strike. The man meanwhile wore a monk's robes suitable considering he traveled through the desert just yesterday. Although one would guess the bulkiness of their clothes would hinder them, they moved as naturally in them as a shinobi would in their uniform.
"Ooh." Kankuro hissed as he saw the naginata pierce dangerously close to Yukino's neck. Instead of showing panic in her face a terrifying grin spread on her face as she kicked up her defense and began striking back having taken enough time to get a read on their moves. As if something clicked the fervor in their attacks increased as they swung around with increased ferocity not worried about hurting or getting hurt. The bloodlust between them terrified them as they wondered if they should even get involved.
・・・
Fighting like wolves the rush they felt passed and they returned to their normal dance of striking and parrying. Since all they were testing were her reflexes Yukino began to feel a bit chatty. "I think this is the first time I've seen you fight." Stepping back, Yukino kept her stance, keeping her eyes on both of them.
"It is, isn't it." Chuckling Kichi spun the pole she held with confidence and familiarity. "Taking care of the shrine from those wishing to steal from it requires a necessary level of skill to protect it."
"As head priest…" Nori spoke calmly, as he slammed the end of the pole on the ground where Yukino stood moments before she somersaulted away. "It is my duty to guard the shrine and its secrets. But it is also my duty to make sure the heir is fit to take part in the trial."
"If you were this strong, how did you get beat up," Yukino said, circling around for a better angle looking for a good opening. "Kichi, how did you get taken?" She asked, referring to the time where Kichi was taken, and the same day when they first rescued Emi.
"The shrine does not follow the practice of developing poison resistance." Kichi explained. "We may… have also not been paying attention to our surroundings and failed to notice someone slipping something into our drinks." She laughed sheepishly.
Sighing, Nori shook his head as he vividly remembered that day. "It was reckless of us to let our guards down."
"It wasn't your fault." Yukino said, blocking an incoming strike with the pole of her own naginata. "You could also start on developing your resistance."
"That would be the best option," Kichi giggled, backing off letting Nori take the front, "but as you know the earliest one can join the shrine is at 15 years.
"Ryota was 15 when he first started and so was Emi."
"We know but we are talking about one person overseeing more than five to ten people at a time for this. Every person has a different body which means different doses at a different pace."
"Something like this requires extra care." Nori struck only for the red haired woman to duck and dodge. "Which means that something like this is time consuming."
"It's too risky." Going around Nori, Kichi covered an incoming strike. "But we have taken steps in ensuring that those that want to learn learn."
Humming in agreement Nori tossed up his weapon drawing Yukino's blue eyes to it as he rushed forward with his fists. "Although I disagree with your family's methods," He said, going for a hit, reacting to his strike she blocked it and redirected it, sending one of her own. "I do see the reasoning behind developing the poison resistance as early as 5." Backing away Nori grabbed the falling naginata and struck towards her as Kichi came from behind to strike as well. Managing to redirect both weapons with her own weapon and hands Nori stopped and pulled away and Kichi did the same. "You managed to avoid all hits in the last half hour. I say you are ready."
"Really?"
"Yes." He chuckled. "Of course after I perform a simple check up to make sure you're healthy."
Beaming at the news she jumped up excitedly still holding tightly onto her naginata.
"Congrats Yukino!" Kichi laughed, as she took back their weapons to seal up. "Bet you can't wait to see all the tasks waiting for you."
Hearing that the red haired woman began to groan at the thought of the piling tasks remembering the Hokage and his piles and piles of paperwork he was buried under all those years ago. If what awaited her was anything like that the idea of staying here for a bit longer didn't seem that bad.
"Not to mention that once you get home you'll have to talk to the elders about your plans for an heir. Luckily you have quite a few options so don't worry."
"I already have a solution for that so I don't have to worry about that but Nori don't you have to deal with this too? I thought your position was hereditary?"
"Hm?" As the topic of conversation shifted to him, he turned to look at the two women. Catching up on what they were talking he gave a simple nod. "It is," he answered, "but I have no urge or intention on having any children. There is nothing special with my bloodline like yours that a seal can't do. I'll just look for a successor and teach them what I know, it won't be too hard."
"Huh, what about you Kichi?"
"I'm in the same boat. I don't want any children either. I quite like my life the way it is." She said as she glanced over at her friend who shared the sentiment. "But we know how this decision doesn't only affect us individually but the clan as a whole. There are already so few of us left, if there isn't any variety we will risk inbreeding. So we opted for donating our… genetic information." She said, implying her half of her genes.
"Since we have no use for it, someone else might." Nori added with a smile, content with his decision.
・・・
As the group talked quietly among themselves the chatter turned into hushed whispers and then silence as they noticed the two brothers approach them. "Kazekage, it is a pleasure to meet you." Nori greeted the auburn haired man with a gentle smile before giving a brief introduction of him and Kichi. "We just finished the physical examination. Thank you for letting us use this facility."
"Don't worry Yukino told us you might need it." The young man said. "We also heard mention of the shrine a couple of times already. Ryota mentioned you were the ones who gave her her crest."
"Correct, it's actually one of our old traditions." Nori beamed, having been the one responsible for carving it himself.
"You know if your family has a crest this guy here will make it for you, just give him what you need to make it. We promise it will last for a long time." Kichi added, promoting her friend's skill. "For a price that is."
Laughing at her hustling, Kankuro decided to play along. "Oh really? How do we know they will last?"
"Well my good sir." Kichi smiled and ran to her friend pulling out their crest. "See this here?" She held it up for all to see before handing it over to the puppeteer. "It's currently one of the oldest surviving crests still around thanks to our head priest's carving techniques. This has been around since the 5th head priest, the 4th lost it." She whispered the last bit.
"Oh really? And what number are you?" Kankuro asked Nori. Hearing this Yukino threw Nori a knowing look. "I'm the 37th." He chuckled. Hearing this the man's eyes widened as he slowly looked down at the crest in his hands. "It's almost a thousand years old, just give it a century more."
"Oh," Realizing the history he held in his hands he carefully held it out for the man to take it back.
"Thank you." Nori took the large crest back. "On the topic of crests. I see you aren't wearing yours." He said, turning to Yukino.
Tensing up the girl avoided his gaze. "Sorry."
"I wasn't even going to reprimand you." He let out a chuckle. "I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry. We still haven't been able to find your family crest."
"I'm fine with that. It's a shame we lost something so historical but you know it's kind of symbolic… to have a new one is a fresh start." Remembering something she gasped. "I'll be back!" Running out the two shrine keepers chuckled to themselves wondering what got into her now.
"I'm curious about this. Is it alright if I ask something?" Gaara spoke up asking for permission.
"Don't be so formal, you're Yukino's friend, ask away." Kichi said receiving a small nudge from Nori to have some decorum when addressing the Kazekage.
"How important are the crests?" He asked. "I'm sorry if my question is rude."
"Oh you weren't being rude at all."
Agreeing with a nod, Nori traced the spiral on the white moonstone he held. "It's hard to explain how special they are… what they mean to us. For me this has been passed down from eldest child to eldest child for generations along with it being my duty. It is the only thing I have left of my father and grandfather. To me it is a symbol of my connection to a past that's now rubble. It is also a symbol of my duty… after all only one can take my position." Letting out a small chuckle he shook his head. "But that is quite grim isn't it. The younger generation doesn't put such a deep meaning to theirs or aren't so attached to it. For most it's just part of the coming of age ceremony."
"Oh don't say that." Kichi jumped in, taking out hers. "See mine? It doesn't have the rich history Nori's crest has but it's still special to me. It's a symbol of my family and home." Looking at her best friend she smiled. "With you guys, the shrine."
Unable to hold back a smile Nori chuckled. Raising their hand to cover their mouth they couldn't hide the smile that was so obvious in their eyes. "I still remember when I made yours." He smiled as the memory resurfaced.
"Haha, oh remember how your grandpa hovered over you as you made it?"
"Oh don't remind me about that I thought for sure I would crack it."
"But you didn't," she smiled as she held up the small crest. "It came out beautifully and hey considering how reckless I am I'm surprised it hasn't cracked yet. I'm guessing the blessing you gave it was sincere."
Watching the pair laugh as they reminisced with each other, the two brothers looked at each other before quietly taking a step back to let them talk about their shared memories.
Standing beside his brother Kankuro let out a quiet sigh as he watched his brother's brow furrow slightly in thought. "What's on your mind Gaara."
"I know our nation wasn't involved in their destruction but I can't help but feel some guilt for their situation."
"Mm…" Agreeing with his brother he looked over at the duo hearing mentions of the priest's grandfather. "There isn't really anything we can do about it. Even if we wanted to, I think they are content relying on themselves." Looking at the pair their eyes turned to Yukino as she returned holding her crest up. Reaching the two shrine members they began to animatedly talk with each other with gaps of silence in between as they talked privately with each other.
Glancing over at his brother, Kankuro recognized the calculated look in his eyes as he stared at the group. Guessing what he was thinking he sighed knowing it would be futile to offer assistance to someone who expressed they want to remain secret.
Showing it off Yukino's crest with pride to the two brothers Nori advertised his skills for the stone carving only to hear the sad news that clan crests weren't a thing in Sunagakure. Disappointed and needing to desperately sit down to relax for a moment everyone returned to the manor. To their surprise as they neared the front of the manor they were ambushed by a few messengers carrying gifts.
Graciously accepting the gifts they brought them inside aware of the no strings attached rule they agreed to. Heading to the living room in the main section of the manor they all settled, Kankuro, Gaara, and sat to the far side of the living room looking over the gifts while Nori guided Yukino to the couch for a quick health check up.
Sitting on the couch arm outstretched he sat on the coffee table examining her pulse. Counting the beats with a light smile it slowly morphed into a slight frown. Puzzled at his reaction Yukino began to think of anything that could have affected her heart rate in the past week. Realizing what she overlooked she looked over at Nori as she saw the same realization dawn on him.
Slapping her hand over his mouth she slowly shook her head motioning behind them. Slowly pulling her hand away she whispered. "We'll talk about this later."
Shaking his head he stood up, with his hand still on her wrist he dragged her to her room. Knowing how this would look she did her best to not stumble as she stood and followed after him as naturally as she could.
Reaching the room she entered first and looked away feeling the cold feeling of shame covering her. A million thoughts ran through her head as to why. No matter the place each one had their traditions, some that valued chastity more than others.
As the thoughts flooded her mind she snapped to the present when she heard a sigh escape him. Holding her breath she watched him intently trying to plan her next steps. Planning what excuses to come up with. Weighing and wondering which ones would be the best to use.
"You're a medic-nin for kami's sake," Hearing those few words she felt a wave of relief wash over her as her worries of chastity and purity weren't an issue. "...you know vigorous activities can be harmful to your child–"
"You're pregnant?"
Falling to be alert of their surroundings they turned their heads to the open door and the puppeteer that stood there. "Who's–" He didn't even have to finish the thought as he began to compile a list of every man she's probably been in contact with. No matter how much he thought of every person and every possibly his gut kept telling him it was the one person he hoped it wasn't.
He wasn't blind he had noticed the sudden shift in his brother's attitude but he had done his best to come up with all sorts of excuses for it. But hearing this right now was too much. How should he deal with it? What can he do?
Standing quietly as they watched the puppeteer, Nori let out a quiet sigh, "Sort this out quietly." He advised before passing by the puppeteer and getting behind him. With a slight push Kankuro was in as the door shut behind him with a quiet click.
"Kankuro." Calling out to him she took in a deep breath as she gathered the courage to take a step towards him. Three options were laid before her, 1) To do what Nori asked and seal his memory of this conversation, 2) Tell him a lie and hope he believes it or 3) Tell the truth. By far 2 was the easiest one right now but not in the long run especially if her child took after Itachi at worst she might end up ruining Sasuke's and Sakura's marriage if she lied. She will definitely need to talk to Sasuke about this at one point.
"Don't. Let's just get you checked out. We need to make sure you are both alright." Sighing he turned away and opened the door. Taking the opportunity to think of something she understood what he asked and quietly guided him to one of the doctor's in Suna she could rely on.
Kankuro's POV
Watching her as she took odd turns in the hospital she navigated the place with ease knowing already which route to take to avoid being seen. Seeing this all too comfortable behavior I saw a glimpse of what made her good at infiltration and I made a note to revise the security for the hospital once this was done.
Soon enough we reached an office. "Oh Yukino I didn't expect you for another lesson." Placing down her charts, hazel eyes looked up from the numbers to the red headed woman who poked her head through the door.
"I'm not here for a lesson. I came for a private check up." Opening the door she pulled me in and closed the door behind her.
Quickly noticing me, the young lady I now recognized as a bride candidate stood up and lowered her head. "Kankuro-sama, apologies I didn't see you were there."
"It's nice to meet you lady Riko." I greeted her before gesturing to Yukino. "The check up is for her. Do you think you can keep this paperless?"
"Of course, don't worry. What can I do for you?" She asked, turning her attention to Yukino and giving her a quick up and down look, looking for any physical injuries.
"Ultrasound." She said placing her hand on her stomach giving her all the information she needed
"Oh," the woman's hazel eyes turned to me before darting away the second our eyes met.
"It's not mine." I cleared any misunderstanding she might have come up with.
"No worries it's just… that we'll have to go to another room for that and well… this is a private procedure. Yukino, would you like to have him present for it?"
"I'm comfortable with him there."
・・・
Moving to another room the curtain was pulled so no one could look in and see them. Standing to the side I watched the process feeling jittery wondering if Gaara had grown curious of their disappearance and began looking. She hadn't said anything yet and that silence was unnerving. Meanwhile the woman in question wore a neutral expression as she quietly went through the procedure. What went on her mind he didn't know but he was ready to doubt her in case she began to lie or try to weasel her way out of this serious matter.
"Fascinating," Riko awed as she looked at the ultrasound. From where I stood I squinted as I couldn't discern what I saw on the screen, "Congratulations on having healthy triplets."
'Triplets?' Surprised by this, my eyes quickly turned to the woman to see her face. Instead of seeing surprise like I was feeling there was a crack to her facade that she couldn't hide fast enough. For a split second there was confusion and shock on her face.
"No that can't be true." She mumbled, raising my suspicions. Remembering the medic nin that left a week prior I guessed that he must've told her the exact number. But three in just a week? Either he must've missed one or there is something more to this.
"I know it's rare but it's definitely three." The doctor reassured her as she turned away to clean the equipment.
"No no that's not what I mean." She quickly responded before freezing. Taking in a deep breath she shook her head and dragged a hand over her face. "Sorry I need to go. Please keep this a secret even from Botan-san."
"I'm a medic-nin your check up will remain confidential." Holding out a piece of cloth to clean herself with, Yukino took it and put back on her facade. There was too much at stake here that he couldn't let go especially if there was a chance it involved his brother and he wasn't going to let her slip away like she wished.
Yukino's POV
Kankuro didn't even have to utter a word for me to know he had questions. Gaara and I weren't exactly discrete, for Kami's sake he took me to one of the most popular and high class restaurants in Sunagakure. Someone was bound to notice and recognize us on our way in and out of there. So weighing every option and now knowing that my seal was weakening I had to tell the truth. Just like Haruki's father there was no way I could lie about the father's identities of these twins especially if they ended up inheriting magnet release or if they ended up once again taking after him more than me and either one would be so hard to disprove using words alone. It also felt wrong to hide this but there was very little I could do.
Taking Kankuro for a quick detour to the greenhouses I erected a small barrier and locked us in. "Do you know how sealed weapons work?"
"Why does that even matter?"
"Answer this so you can understand what I'm about to say," I explained and repeated my question again. "Do you know how a sealed weapon can remain intact?"
"Fine," shaking his head he let out an exasperated sigh. "How long do they last miss Uzumaki?" He asked with irritation in his voice at what he thought was an attempt to change the subject.
"Forever," I answered. "No matter how much time passes the moment they are sealed the weapon will remain in the condition it was in at that point in time…" Taking in a deep breath I looked up and hugged myself encouraging myself to confess. "Which is how… how I've been pregnant for the past 6 years." I managed to force the words out of my mouth.
"What?"
"I know it's hard to believe… but I was young. Too young to trust myself to be able to raise a child." Remembering everything that went on just a few years ago I was in awe that I was able to get through it and keep them safe. To keep my body well enough to not suffer a miscarriage. Honestly, Nori's anger was warranted, it was foolish of me to join a war in such a state. But a part of me knew and trusted my aunt enough to know that as someone made to bear healthy strong children that she would have made sure my body could handle it as twisted and sick as that was. Focusing back to the present I looked at Kankuro straight in the eyes. "Even so I still wanted them; they were the only thing left I had of… him. What I did was forbidden but I was willing to take on the risks." I confessed and looked away, nearly letting my emotions reveal their name. Pulling away my shirt to reveal my stomach better I focused my chakra to my fingertips before touching my skin and pumping my chakra across it revealing all the seals on my body for a few moments. When I did I traced the fading seal directing above my sword. "Once they are two months old the seal will break and my first child will begin to resume their growth."
"I… just," Sorting his thoughts with the information I gave him I could see there was so much he wanted to ask but only so much he knew he could ask. "Then the two new ones, what is that about?"
"I was stupid enough to not learn from my previous experience and use protection. How else, Kankuro?"
"Ok, I get it." He sighed knowing that was as much of the details on that matter as he was going to get. "What I mean is, who is the father?" Looking down at his hands as he pressed them to himself almost trembling as if dreading the answer.
Already knowing what to do I let out a heavy sigh. "Is there a need to ask when you know?"
Stumbling back he gripped the plant beds next to him and gently lowered himself to the ground. "Does he know? How are we supposed to explain this? If the council finds out." He began to ramble trying to find solutions for every problem that this would cause.
"We won't tell him." I simply told him as cruel as that was.
Snapping out of his spiral his eyes turned to me with such anger that I nearly stepped back from surprise. "That is my brother! You are having his kid! How do you expect me to hide this!" He yelled.
"Alright! Let's say I tell him!" I argued back, matching his tone so he would hear. "Then what? Will I stay in Sunagakure for the next decade watching my own children grow up learning that kindness is a weakness? To grow up receiving scrutiny from literally everyone around them? That if they just fall below the standard that they aren't worthy to be part of your family? I grew up here too, remember? I have seen everything. I know how this place is Kankuro, and I know the type of treatment my children will end up experiencing if we stay."
"But you can't keep this a secret from him."
"Even if he doesn't want to be a father?"
Shocked at my words, his eyes softened for a moment. "What do you mean?"
"Gaara admitted to me that he isn't ready to have children." Remembering the conversation in his greenhouse I shook my head turning away from him. "He's afraid of becoming just like Rasa-sama."
"He never told me this."
"He already has enough pressure from everyone to marry already just to secure the Kazekage seat Kankuro. What do you think everyone's reaction will be if he admits he doesn't want to have children?" Taking a step towards him I tapped his chest. "They will force him to marry at all costs and at worst their attention and insistence will turn to you. He already knows you want nothing to do with this so he's kept quiet to protect you from their insistence."
"I…" Stepping back his legs hit the planters as I kept prodding his chest.
"If we tell him there is no way this will remain secret. Someone will slip up sooner or later. If the council finds out what do you think will happen? They may see the value in my skills but what about the rest of Suna once they figure out their mother is a foreigner? You know damn well some people will not stay still they will come after me so there's a vacancy. Or even worse they will come after my children because they don't have any worth yet. Until they are grown and can show their skills no one will see them, they will only see me."
"We can protect them."
"Just like how you protected me?" I asked, referring to what happened not even two weeks ago. "I was right there in the heart of Sunagakure," gripping his shirt I pulled him down to stare into his eyes, "and I was abducted, drugged, and almost sold Kankuro. I am not safe here."
"But we can't hide this from Gaara."
"You know him. Even if he isn't ready he will take responsibility. He will have to inform the council to legitimize them and that will just start every single issue I just mentioned." Letting go I sighed as I was holding back from mentioning it until now. "There is also my first child there is a chance they won't take after me and it will be VERY hard to claim it as his."
"What do you mean?"
"..." Unable to look at him I pressed my lips together and shook my head. "I can't say right now but their father had a special kekkei genkai. Their appearance I can pass as recessive genetics but if they inherit their abilities I will not be able to."
"Alright, I understand." Sighing I heard a thump as he sat on the ground to sort his thoughts. 'Maybe it would be better to keep him quiet like Nori asked.' Approaching I looked down at his perfectly lowered head. Letting out a frustrated groan he threw himself on the floor and spread out staring at the translucent glass above. Realizing what I was about to do I pulled my hand away and clutched it tightly with the other.
The man below me on the other hand, unaware of what I had been thinking let out a frustrated sigh. "I will admit you are right. Not too long ago there was a coup attempt and Gaara's prospective bride died during the skirmish. As much as I hate to admit it, it's still not safe. But 13 years…" Imagining all that time he shook his head. "13 years with nothing, all the things he will miss out on, all the things he could have experienced… You know you are taking that away from him."
"I considered that too, Kankuro, which is why I decided to tell you. Just because I'll be trapping myself for 13 years doesn't mean my contact with the outside will be lost. I can always send someone to give you updates."
"It's still not the same…"
"I know." Taking a seat next to him I looked up. "But I can guarantee that they'll be able to grow up safely. No attempts at their lives, no kidnapping for ransom. They won't experience any of the bad things you three had to go through growing up. You met my people, tell me what is your opinion on my homeland."
"..." Meeting his eyes he looked back up to the glass above our heads and closed his eyes. "They are judgemental I will admit but it's never us it's always our village and our choices. They speak of rank but it's never to look down on them. They speak of bloodlines and new kekkei genkai but they don't see it as something to be feared or worshiped just as a thing that is… be honest with me your small town isn't just made up of Uzumaki is it."
"You're right," I admitted already knowing that with everything everyone has been saying they would have eventually arrived at this conclusion. "You'd be surprised how many people you can come across who all they want to do is to live without being hunted down. Still not enough to create a village but enough to build a like-minded community." I lied knowing damn well that our numbers must have risen in the last few years.
"...Are you sure you'll be able to keep them safe?"
"Well… we have been fine for the last 6 years and the barrier has not fallen. No one has found us so I can say that we will remain living in peace without worry." Hearing this a look of relief washed over his face before the worries came back. Getting a glimpse at the emotions flowing through him I knew to keep an eye on him for the time being in case he chose to reveal this secret.
3rd POV
Returning to the manor Yukino and Kankuro were greeted with the smell of food wafting from the main side of the manor. Picking up their pace they looked into the dining room and were greeted by a large spread of food consisting of sea-based foods and meat.
"Ah welcome back, did you find your trip to the greenhouse fruitful?" Kichi asked as she exited the kitchen holding perfectly cooked ribs on a platter. Passing by them they heard the quiet hum coming from her as she placed down the plate.
"Things are going well." I told her. "But I'll have to tell them soon that I may have to leave."
"Enough about that." Nori said as he carried the last plate. "Sit down. There is food to eat."
Saying enough Yukino quickly took a seat keeping her composure as she was hiding how nervous she was about what he would say. Whether he would stop the trial entirely or scold her more for her recklessness.
"Thank you for such a grand feast you didn't have to do this, you are our guests." Gaara curtly said as he looked over at the huge spread before them wondering if they would even be able to finish it all. That worry vanished however the more he inhaled the food.
"Oh don't worry this isn't only for you," turning his gaze to Yukino the woman fidgeted in her seat. "It's for our lady she needs to eat now while she can. She needs to store as many calories as she can for the trial. There will be days where she won't be able to find food especially in the desert."
Hearing this Yukino perked up and looked over at the head priest. "I can still participate?"
"As long as you start no later than the end of this month. After that, you will be barred from taking the trial until next year."
"Is there anything that will prevent her from taking part?" Gaara asked. "She's been preparing for this for weeks now. I would feel guilty if we were responsible for delaying her."
Putting on a smile Nori shook his head. "Ah, it's not your fault, it's just a precaution to make sure the trial has some success. Animals migrate and stay in certain areas in different times of the year. We just take into account where we are and how that would affect her chances at finding some sustenance." As he said that he told Kichi and Yukino something different. °You are still early on in your pregnancy the further along you get the more laborious it will become for you. This trial is life or death they will not hesitate to go after you even if pregnant.°
Kichi nodded along to what she was hearing. °I'm quite surprised at your condition even in such a state. I have to say I'm amazed but you're also an idiot for putting yourself in such risky situations. This is as much leeway we're giving you on this matter. You have to be out before August or we will not do your ceremony.°
°I understand. I will leave by the end of the month you have my word.°
"We really want her to pass," Kichi added. "After all, who wants to drag this out for another year?"
"I see. I will make sure to do everything I can to make sure she leaves before that date." Gaara added much to the shrine priests' delight. Taking a bite of the food before him his eyes lit up. "This is delicious, thank you for the meal. What dish is this?"
"That's amberjack broiled in sweet soy sauce." Nori smiled with a hint of pride.
"One of the many dishes Yukino here likes." Kichi added, sending a look at the woman who was currently gathering every bit of everything with starving eyes. "Haha, good thing you have an appetite." 'we worried you wouldn't.' She thought the last bit knowing that some women had sensitivities to certain foods. Not knowing what exactly she might not be able to eat the only solution they had was to make anything they knew how to make.
Caught mid bite the woman covered her head and nodded. Swallowing her food she let out a thank you before indulging herself.
Kankuro's POV
The dinner went smoothly after that but I could tell secret conversations took place between the three. By the underlying meaning behind their words with the context I now had I could tell they were fully aware of the secret she carried. Even so they kept their composure and laughed and made jokes. As much as I tried to enjoy my meal, each bite I took felt like a rock settling on my stomach.
Watching the group leave for their rooms in preparation for their departure tomorrow I remained alone with Gaara. Staring at my little brother sitting quietly on the couch reading a book I took in this quiet moment. 'Was she telling the truth about him? Was he really protecting me?'
Throwing myself on the couch I let out a sigh. "The end of the month huh. I guess she'll meet that guy her elders chose for her." Bringing up what she said at the meeting I looked at his reactions looking for anything but he remained stoic. "It's crazy to believe someone else is going through the same thing you are."
"It's a shame her elders have made that decision for her." He answered keeping his eyes on his book. "But she will manage well. I hear they are reasonable."
"Well I guess. You know she mentioned before wanting children but is that really how she feels?" I asked before shifting my weight and looking at my younger brother. "Hey I never asked but what about you? We're about to be uncles but have you ever imagined being a father?"
"Yes."
"I can just imagine a little grumpy kid just like you. How many would you like to have if it was up to you?"
"Three."
"Just like us huh." Slapping his shoulder I stood up. "Well for that to happen you have to meet a girl first. I'm heading up now. I have that issue at that border I have to leave for." Leaving as quickly as I could I rushed to my room. The moment I closed my door I laid on my bed and stared at the ceiling. Although he answered, his answers were short and came too quickly. The brother I knew would have pondered his question for a bit before coming up with an explanation as to why. I knew then that she was telling the truth. As much as I wanted to tell my brother about what I learned I knew that all the issues we discussed would come and crash whatever safety that was promised. At the same time I didn't want to deprive my brother of any interaction with his own children. Laying there I began to think about what I could do. But the answer was clear: I had to strike a deal with her before she left. But what kind? I needed to look into whatever I could, to come up with good terms for them. Would she come up with something if I brought up my concern?
So many questions plagued my mind but I knew I should hold off on approaching her tonight while Gaara was still in the house. The more discreet we were, the more likely they will remain safe.
A/N: Sorry for the slight delay. My final year is wrapping up and I have projects to do and exams to study for. Thank you kind readers for keeping up with the series.
The end is approaching but I do have in mind for a reunion so don't worry. But a little bit of angst and bad decisions will be sprinkled in before that.
