Eight Months / March 12, 2004

It's the last day before spring break and I have a Sam that is about to shift. Just what I needed this month. I sigh as I approach Sam.

"Hey Sam, we need to talk."

His growl in response isn't helping him any.

"Don't growl at me mister. I need you to follow me. There's shit I need to talk to you about. And no, you don't have a fucking choice. Text Leah that your gonna be camping for the next week. Your gonna want to let her know."

"Why should I listen to you Bella? Its my life. I don't have to do a thing you tell me to do."

"Not for long Sam. And if you must know, remember the legends we study the most in our cultural appreciation club? They are real. And you are about to join the ranks. So, I need you to fucking follow me before we have to come up with a damn cover story on why a wolf was seen on school grounds."

Sam's body is shaking as he tries to comprehend what I said.

"Now Sam. Get moving. Your gonna want to head to the woods behind the school. I will be right behind you the entire time." I shove Sam towards the school door, nudging him towards the forest.

"Drop the backpack, you don't want to lose it to the first shift."

"How are you so sure about all this Bells?"

"I've been shifting for four years now Sam. I know exactly how you feel."

Sam stops shaking in shock. "Four… Four years? How? I don't think I understand."

"I don't really have the patience to talk you through this step by step. So, I'm gonna do something Hella insulting, and it should do the trick. Just don't try to attack me afterwards. It's not meant to confuse you, just get that final trigger for your shift to hit."

"I don't like the sound of this."

"Nor do I Sam. Nor do I. Just know I am sorry for this." I don't give him any chance to process what I have said as I reluctantly kiss him. My plan thankfully worked as I jumped back as he shifted into a pure black wolf. I am breathing hard as the wounds of his ungodly sharp claws had just slashed my chest deeply. I hiss in pain as I straighten up.

"Fuck that hurts." I groan in pain. "Welcome to the pack Sam, you get to be my Beta. Now pardon me as I deal with this highly agonizing pain. You focus on calming down. Think of being human, how you have felt doing normal human things." I bend down and roll onto the ground as my wounds start to heal. The wounds are almost gone as Sam shifts back to human.

"The fuck was that? Wait are you okay Bells?"

"I'm peachy Sam, you barely will even notice that I was even injured. If anything. Welcome to the world of the supernatural. Now, how are you feeling now? Still feeling the constant aggression and anger?"

"Uh, a little, but its actually feeling a lot better than it has been the past week. What do you mean you won't look injured? You were just swearing in pain, I felt my claws dig deeply into your flesh. There is no way you are going to be okay. I should be hauling your ass to the hospital."

"I'm fine Sam." I groan as I stand up again. Stretching as I move the repaired muscles and skin. "We heal fast. It's okay. Plus, we don't have the time to get a doctor to look at me. By the time we even got there, there wouldn't even be any blood. Which reminds me. Don't go to any doctor besides Old Quil or Dr. Cullen. Old Quil will smell incredibly better in comparison.

Lets grab your bookbag and find you some spare clothes. As much as I can appreciate what you were gifted with, I really don't need to be subjected to it more than strictly necessary. So uh, get used to destroying your wardrobe. I'm still working on finding us a way, so we don't destroy what we are wearing when we shift. I highly suggest you get yourself shorts at the goodwill in Port Angels in the meantime." I look down at my torn shirt with a heavy frown.

"How are you so calm about this? I just had paws for crying out loud."

"I was a teenage werewolf, and no one even said thanks. It's a quote from a song from the late 50's. I suggest listening to it at least once. It might make you laugh. But we need to head to the Black's place. I need to get a new shirt and I'm sure you can fit in one of Billy's now. Uh on the bright side you now have perfect abs, your imprint will be a lucky woman." I lead us through the woods towards Billy's.

"Imprint? What's that?"

"Short and sweet, Its your soulmate. The bond typically forms into a romantic relationship. But it doesn't have to be. It is whatever you and the imprint need or want. Just don't listen to the elders about it. They have no clue what they are talking about. All they know is from the diaries left behind from the previous packs. Diaries you will read." There is an undertone of the Alpha tone to my voice as I make my first Alpha order. "Sorry bout that. Not used to being an Alpha, it's just been me for the past four years. Those journals are what helped me get through that first year."

"Alpha order? Is that why I feel compelled to read those journals now?"

"Yup. And thus starts our week long training crash course of how to be a Spirit Warrior. Hope you paid attention to the Cultural appreciation material. You are gonna need it."

"You knew I was going to join you? How many of the others in that group do you know about?"

"That is not something to discuss right now Sam. Lets get you a change of clothes, get some food, and I'll shift with you so I can show you the basic ropes."

Sam is just quiet as we hit the edge of the woods near Billy's place. I reach down and grab a waterproof duffle and grab a clean shirt. "You will have to get used to nudity pretty quick. Hate to say it but even, I tear up my clothes when I shift suddenly. You will be bound to eventually see me nude. Just push it to the side as its not sexual. I swear to the Spirits I'm not into you."

Sam's cheeks are bright red. "I would rather not see you nude. It's not a good thought as your basically my little sister."

"Then best to either get used to it or find a way to avoid looking at me till I get clothes back on. Now turn if you don't want to see anything."

Sam quickly turned away from me and I changed my shirt to the new one, the torn one in my hand. "Stay here. You don't want the Black Twins seeing you. I recommend hiding a few feet deeper in. I'll be back with clothes and a rawhide strap for you." I rush out of the forest and reach the back door of Billy's home and enter without knocking. I'm back out with a pile of clothes minutes later.
"These should fit you, I'm gonna be on the porch waiting for you. Do try not to take long, we have a lot to get through. And you are the first to shift since my own shift." I place the pile of clothes gently on the ground beside a large tree and walk away to the porch.

Sam walks up looking a bit uncomfortable in the borrowed clothes and looking nervous around the area.

"Now, I know the welcome speech is really rough at the moment. But in short, I have a place in the woods where you can crash till your emotions settle down. And don't worry too much about it as Billy will give your mom a rundown of what is going on with you and the whole shifting thing. Should help keep you out of getting in trouble with her."

"You realize this is a lot to take in, right? I was just taking a calculus test, and now I can have paws at a moment's notice. Its unsettling and extremely confusing. And I feel like I just cheated on Leah just by you being able to see me… naked." He swallows as he buries his head in his hands.

"You can't tell her. What we need to do is have you look her dead in the eyes. If nothing happens you will need to find a way to let her down gently. You never know what may happen in the future. Just look at her first. You will know if she is your imprint. It won't be deniable. Just don't make me order you break it to her gently. She can't know the truth. Not yet anyways."

"I can't tell anyone can I?"

"Only people allowed to know are our parents, our imprints, and the council elders. There are severe consequences if the legends are told to outsiders."

"Isn't that what you are though? An outsider."

I softly laugh. "Not anymore. I was five when I was allowed to start learning of the tribes secrets. The reason behind it is a bit unbelievable. Ironic considering we can have fluffy tails and paws on a whim."

The silence starts to envelop us as Billy exits his home, a crutch helping him walk. His health having declined since Sarah's death. It would be worse if it wasn't for me forcing him to take his meds.

"Hello Sam, I hear you have learned the Tribes biggest secret. Welcome to a new life. I don't have the experience Bella here has, but I am a segway to the elders for you and whoever is in the pack. Feel free to come to my door whenever you are in need of something, regardless of the time." Billy pats Sam on the back a few times. "Bella here will teach you what you need to know. Just let me know when you want to start reading the old journals. And don't worry about your mother, I'm going to call her once you two head out. Good luck with wolf training Sam. And listen closely to her."

I smile warmly at Billy. "Thanks Billy, could you call dad and let him know I wont be home this week? It's going to be hard to stay in touch while we are wolfed out." I chuckle at my own little joke, a dad joke really, and a terrible one at that.

"Come on Sam, let's get you started on training." I offer Sam my hand and once he takes it, I pull him up from the porch and lead him back to the woods. "Get undressed and tie the clothes up with the rawhide strap I handed you, tie it to your ankle it will help with keeping clothed when you shift. And I suggest you get a duffle like I have hidden in the woods for when you accidentally destroy the clothes you were wearing. The first few months are hard to avoid the occasional unintentional shift. I'm going to shift over there. I'll wait for you back here. And just think of something that will make you livid. It will help until you get a hang of shifting."

March 22, 2004

I spent ten days teaching Sam about shifting, what was now expected of him now that he is now a Spirit Warrior. The hardest thing was going in-depth on the effects of an imprint on the relationship as well as what it means to the wolf and the man.

By the time school started back up after the break Sam and I walked in together softly whispering. "Remember we need to run patrol after school tonight. So, we should be done near six so we should have enough time to get homework done. And brace yourself. Leah is standing at your locker. Do you want me to stay nearby in case you lose control of your wolf?"

"Yeah, just stay close." His deep inhale tells me all I need to know of his mental state.

"No matter what happens I'm here for you, you're my brother now." I gently squeeze Sam's shoulder before pushing him towards Leah. Watching as he talks with Leah. I see as he looks into her eyes. His shoulders drop fractionally. I don't move until I see the start of tremors appearing across his frame and I rush over. "Not here Sam, breathe deeply. Hello Leah, I need to kidnap Sam for a bit. You should get headed to class, the bell is gonna ring soon."

Sam's tremors are still there, and I grab his upper arm and pull him out of the school and into the woods.

"Strip and take a run work on the pack hangout, just do something to calm down. So, get your head back in the game, and come back when you feel ready. I'll call the elders to send in an absence excuse. I'll grab your homework for the day, if your still wolfy when school gets done meet me at the pack hangout if you're not there already. Go, get out of here. Now."

Sam's expedient retreat is fast as he runs deep into the woods so he can safely shift without being seen. I wait a moment before I pull out my phone and dial the Elders to alert them of Sam's near incident and barely get to my seat before the last bell.

Needless to say, Sam didn't come back to school today. So, I went through and grabbed all the work for Sam's missed classes and booked it out of the school and into the woods, storing my clothes in my back pack, shifting and grabbing my bag with my teeth.

The run to the pack hangout I found all those years back looks more habitable. The hot springs were left alone but a large clearing was made, and a log cabin rests almost finished within the clearing. I spent almost all of my money on materials for the place, used the wood from the trees I cleared out, most of what is left is the electrical and plumbing.

I shift before I hit the clearing, quickly throwing my clothes back on and heading inside.

"Hey Sam, you here man?"

I hear dead silence, concerning me as I go around the entire place searching for Sam. After ten minutes I leave the cabin and shift again in hopes Sam is just patrolling.

"Yo, Sam, you shifted?" Still silence. Shit. He better not be near the Clearwater's house. I swear to all that is holy that I will kick his ass if he is over there. I growl as I start running towards the Clearwater residence. The three minutes it takes me to run there are enough for me to have caught a recent trail from Sam. Following the trail leads me to a tree on the edge of the forest. Shifting back, I growl lowly as I look up spotting Sam high in the branches.

"Sam, I told you to run, not find the worst place to mope. Get your shit together and get down here." The displeasure is hard to hold back. "I swear Sam, watching from a distance wont change anything. If anything, it will make you worse. I need you to be able to keep watch of the Rez." I sigh loudly.

"Why isn't it her? What kind of cruel joke are the fates having with my heart? I fucking love her, but I can't have her now."

The growl coming from Sam worries me. I jump up into the tree and sit next to him, high above the forest floor, hidden by the trees.

"I know this is hard Sam. And I am sorry that you are having to deal with this. But I can't have you coming here again. You have to keep in mind that Leah and Seth have no clue about the truth behind the legends. Let them remain in their ignorance, if anything make sure when you talk with her next you have Harry or Billy there. I know its not ideal, but we do what we can with what we have."

"How are you this okay with all of this? You were what twelve when you first shifted? I don't understand how you are so okay with it all. I feel like I have no control over myself. And here you are calm and collected as if you have not a care in the world. How do you do it?"

I'm silent for a minute before speaking softly. "Meditation helps, likely not for all but it's what helped me. Write a journal like the other packs did, do something, you can't sit here wallowing in sorrow. I know what I am going to say will sound cruel, but you have to get past this, being in this state makes you vulnerable to attack. If we end up crossing a vampire right now, I would have to not only protect myself buy you as well. Killing those damn things is hard enough as is.

"I need you to figure this shit out. For now, take the time you need to process all of this, figure out how you will let her know, just whatever you do, if you run across your imprint, don't do anything until Leah is broken up with. Or if your lucky your imprint may not want to be in a romantic relationship, and you can have Leah then. Don't break her. Neither of you deserve that.

"Head to the pack hangout, don't leave unless you are patrolling. I'll get you food and your schoolwork. I wont let you fall behind because of becoming a spirit warrior. If I can manage it all alone for four years and stay on top of my classes, so can you. Just finish what you can, and I will get it back to your teachers." I look over at Sam. His defeated look drives an imaginary steak into my heart.

"Do you think that I will be okay when I find my imprint?"

I smile softly. "I know it will all work itself out. You just have to hang in there. Focus on you for now, work on your grades and figure out how you are gonna tell Leah. If she demands an explanation tell her to ask her father. Harry and Sue both are on the council, both know the secret. As elders and her parents, they have the choice to tell her or not. You unfortunately don't have the permission to tell her. If you were to tell her, you break the treaty we have with the Cullen Coven. That wouldn't be a good thing. There are seven of them and only two of us."

Sam sighs dejectedly. "I understand. This just hurts. I've been with her for a few years, I deeply love her. Having to let her go… I hate it." Sam looks over at me. The pain in his eyes break my heart, my arms soon find purchase around him in a hug.

"It's going to be okay, I promise you Sam. Things will work out. The spirits wouldn't leave you to suffer. An imprint is part of their gift to us, as being their warriors is not an easy task, fighting the cold ones is not an easy feat either."

We sat in silence for an hour. "Come on. Lets go get our homework done. It may help you some."

Sam nodded in agreement and we both headed back to the pack hideout and finished our school work, ran a patrol and crashed in two of the beds inside the cabin.

Two months / May 12, 2004

The morning air is suddenly filled by an ear splitting howl. I jump up from my bed in the cabin and run out the front door shifting as soon as I am far enough away from the cabin to prevent it from getting damaged.

The sheer panic in Jared's voice as he panics through the mind link. "Jared, relax. Calm down. I'm heading towards you. Stay put and I'll be there in a minute or two to explain what is going on."

Jared stops panicking almost immediately as he heard my voice in his head. "Bells? Is that you? How… How can I hear you? I don't see you anywhere."

"That would be because I am not there. I'm speaking to you through a mind link type of thing. I'll explain more once I get to you. I promise everything is okay and semi normal. So, while you wait, try to focus on human things."

Jared starts to think about the girl he spent the night with two weeks ago.

"Uh I can see that. Downside of the mind link. We can hear and see what the others are thinking. Sucks but I'm working on fixing that. Maybe focus on school, or a family meal. Just something so I don't have to see a naked woman. Uh speaking of. How close are you to your home."

"I um... Didn't mean for you to see that particular memory. But I'm a bit of a ways near my house why?"

"I'm gonna need to break in and grab you a pair of shorts. Hope you don't mind me digging around, I swear it's not to perve on you. Its to give you some modesty. Cus when you shifted you tore your clothes to shreds. Another downside of what you now are."

"You're joking right?"

"Afraid not. I'm almost there."

When I reached Jared's place, I shifted back. Luckily finding his bedroom window unlocked. Climbing in I go through the clothes on the floor for something that has some stretch to it. Finding something I left the same way I entered and rushed to the forest. After quickly getting my spare dress on and head over to where I follow Jared's trail by his scent.

Jared's wolf form was brown fur and a darker area over his face. I smile reassuringly at him. Gently placing the shorts, I found before him.

"Hey Jared. See I'm here. You wanna try and think human thoughts for me? It's really important that you are able to shift back." I slowly move to sit down on the forest floor as I wait. After a while I lean against a tree sleeping to pass the time. My eyes opening when a distinctly human groan registers in my mind.

"Welcome back to the land of humans Jared. How ya feeling?"

"Like crap. What is going on here? Why did I have paws all of a sudden?"

"Remember the culture study group? Specifically, the parts about the spirit warrior tales?"

"Uh yeah. What about them?"

"You are now one of the Spirit Warriors. Welcome to the pack Jared. Prepare to be busy as hell" I clear my throat a bit as it feels a little scratchy. "I am your Alpha now, Sam is Beta. You are currently my Delta, which may change as I watch over you. You have the potential to become Beta, but you will have to work for it.

"I will have to teach you all the in's and outs of the pack responsibilities, but for now Spend the next two days just learning how to shift back and forth, that knowledge will keep you alive as well as others who we are to protect."

"So, I am what? A werewolf?"

"Not even a little bit, we are shifters. A gift given to us by the spirits. You may think of it as a curse, but it has so many benefits, all for the price of secrecy and responsibility. I know it won't be easy for you to get used to. But you will." I reach out and gently grasp Jared's shoulder. On the bright side, one of the boons is the gift of an imprint. They are a person who will be there for you, the relationship can be anything that is agreed upon. Sam was able to find his own last month when he got council permission to tell her about all this, she didn't take it the greatest. But her cousin Emily was thankfully very accepting. Sam's shocked surprise of seeing her for the first time was sweet but also heartbreaking. Needless to say, you may want to steer clear of Leah for a bit.

"I do have some bad news for you though. You can't hang out with Paul anymore. His behavior can easily set a shifter off and trigger a shift. I'm not saying don't talk with him, just don't hang out. The risk of exposure is just too great. But I have a feeling that you won't have to stay clear for very long, he is starting to show the signs of a shift himself."

"I can't be near Paul? Why not? Especially as he is showing signs of joining us?"

"You can easily hurt him, or even kill him if your not careful. With his habit of easily triggered anger… the consequences, are not good for anyone involved."

The resignation that crosses Jared's face pulls at my heartstrings, but I decide to go quiet to let him process everything.

"This isn't a dream, is it?"

"I wish I could tell you that it was, but I can't. This is your new life. But you don't have to deal with this alone Jared. You have me and Sam there for you. Both of us have gone through what you are going through. So, if you have questions just ask us.

"I do have a bit of excitement though, you won't be going to school for a while. You will be expected to do the work to finish the year though. I will gather it for you and bring it to where the Pack has a hideout. Both the elders and I expect that you finish school. No exceptions. I will bring you the work, you do it, and I will take it back to your teacher. I am doing the same for Sam.

"As for your new responsibilities, you are going to follow Sam this week, learn the protocols and methods to our day to day activities. Sam will show you the patrol route, what to look out for, and the basics of fighting. You will have to stay away from home until you gain control over your shift. Hopefully before the end of the school year you will be able to go back to school. Are you understanding any of this?"

"Uh… sorta. But I should be able to figure it out as I go."

I have been laying here for the past hour just contemplating what perks to buy for the pack. My thoughts purely on what would be best for the pack at current. I know that the emotional temperance would be a really smart idea with Paul on the verge of shifting. The Pack Point encounter thing sounds interesting but its not really telling me what all it entitles, is it a chance of gaining a point when we encounter something? Or is it a chance that extra points are gained as the conditions for gaining points is met? So many choices, and none of them stand out as massively important… yet.

"Yes, keep clothes perk."

Perk: Keep Clothes on Shift

With this perk a shifter can keep their clothing while shifting, no more torn clothing for you!

First time shifters will still lose their clothing upon shift. Second shift and on clothing stays on the shifter under the magic of the Spirits.

Thank God for that perk. The boys will love it, well I will too as I am seriously getting ticked with having to get new clothes for the wardrobe every other month. It really hurts the savings.

Would you like to learn more about what you have bought?

YES/NO

"No." Alright now would be a smart time to head back to the cabin. Well, it's becoming a Pack House from those raunchy werewolf books, now. The idea is a good one and I got it implemented for my pack. I am just thankful that I was able to convince the elders to let the area be for the wolves only. So now we can really do what we need to do so we can be comfortable and safe.

I have basically moved into the place. I tend to visit dad over the weekends and holidays, with a strict dinner at the diner every Wednesday at 6 PM. I don't mind being away from him that much, but I do cherish every moment I get to spend with him. Thinking of family, Sam and Jared's families both are in the know now, so is Leah and her cousin Emily.

We do have pack gatherings once a month over at either Billy's or the Clearwater's residences. Bonfire, retelling of the legends of the Spirit Warriors of past years. And lots of food, gods there is so much food at those gatherings, the surprising part is by the end of the night its all gone, not even any scraps for leftovers. But the families are able to hang out and chill during the gatherings as well.

My thoughts are interrupted suddenly from a new voice in the pack mind link.

"WHAT THE FUCK! Are those paws? Wait is that a tail? What the hell is going on? Am I furry now?"

I can't help chuckling through the link. "Welcome Paul, about time you joined us. Jared will be ecstatic. As for what is going on, no you are not a furry, yes you have a tail and paws. And you are now one of the tribes protectors. Do you recall any of the old legends? Perhaps the ones with the Spirit Wolf Warriors?"

"Who the hell? Where are you? No better question, where are you?"

"I'm speaking through a pack mind link. It helps with synchronization and quick reports. As for who I am, I am Bella Swan, your Alpha."

"Wait the chick who somehow got accepted into the tribe school? How the fuck are you here? Er in my head I mean."

"I'm just like you, I shift into a wolf just the same as you. And think of it as a cursed gift from the Spirits. I'm almost to you."

"I am so confused right now."

"All of us were when we first shifted. You will get used to it. For now, you may want to start thinking about human shit. Er just not sex, I really don't need to see that. Got enough of it when Jared shifted."

"Wait you can see what I think?"

"The surface thoughts really, your deep internal monologs not so much. I do hope that I can get it figured out so we can only hear what we want to share. Uh you may wish to brace yourself, I'm about to be behind you." I appear with a loud rustle as I run through a rare bush in the undergrowth of the forest canopy. My momentum stops three steps into the area Paul is in, his wolf is stunning with it's dark silver fun. I can't help but stare.

"Bella, your staring at me. Is there something wrong with me?"

I shake my head clearing it so I can talk again. "Sorry, I don't know what went through me. But as you can now clearly see, I am indeed a wolf as well." My dark grey fur with white paws is fluffed out as I had taken a dip in one of the rivers in the forest before resting in my little meadow.

"You… your wolf looks pretty."

"Thank you. Yours isn't bad either. Now we need to get you to shift back human. It's the first challenge. And something I desperately need you to achieve. So, start thinking about human shit. Preferably not sexual."

He obediently starts thinking about every human thing he could think of. Eventually Paul manages to shift human before me and I join him as a human, deliberately not looking at him.

"Ignore the state of undress. It shouldn't happen after this shift. Also, congratulations on completing your first full shift. Welcome to the pack. Hope you like being busy." I look over at him and blush slightly as he hasn't covered himself. I force my eyes to meet his eyes, and I freeze. "Shit."
