Chapter 3 Apartment Building
Francis reached the bottom of the staircase cursing under his breathe as every step he and the others took caused the stairs to creak underfoot much to their annoyance as the unknown infected could still be heard groaning close by somewhere, he walked through a doorway realising he was standing in a pitch black corridor connecting all the apartments together. "Clear" he said as the others joined him scanning their flashlights around nervously along the walls floors and doors, "Mind if I check this apartment for a new shirt" Louis said quietly, Francis scowled but Bill simply nodded, "go ahead we will wait here, Zoey watch his back" the old man finished as he opened the door next to them and peeked inside nodding as Zoey carefully followed close behind.
The two older men of the group said nothing as their every sense was dedicated to listening for any signs of danger as the rain and wind counties to howl outside the cracked dark and dirty windows of the apartment building they were in.
"You know the hospital itself was one of the first places that fell when the infection hit… the evacuation will be on the roof and that means we are gonna have to fight our way up" Francis said as the old man drew from his cigarette, "no shit… but we will cross that bridge when we cross it for now let's actually get to the hospital" Bill finished as the groaning of the unknown infected could still be heard nearby.
Inside the room Zoey trained her handgun around before focusing it on the door as she could see Louis rummaging through some drawers and a wardrobe finding a white shirt nearly identical to his old one, "nice" he said wincing the wound still hurt as he put the shirt and his old red tie on, Zoey raised an eyebrow, "it reminds me of better times… maybe boring but better" he said and she smiled as then searched their bathroom finding a bottle of pain pills in the cabinet, "grabbing pills" he said taking some as Zoey chuckled as walked over to her.
She then recoiled in horror as a hooded figure was clinging to the outside of a window behind Louis yelping and firing her handgun smashing the window as the hooded figure leapt away, "shit girl what the hell!" Louis snapped, "one of those hooded things was at that window…" she said her eyes wide with fright, he narrowed his eyes turning around and then back to her placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "next one we see won't get us so lucky" he said as two shotgun blasts went off from the corridor.
They both ran outside to Francis holding a smoking shotgun with two infected crumpled on the floor in front of him, "any reason you shot your pistol and alerted the infected weapon were here?" Bill asked as the young girl looked down embarrassed, "sorry I saw something in the window" she said moving past the old man and following the Biker towards the stairwell as the old man looked at the office worker who approached. "She said she saw another one of those hooded jumpers hanging off the outside of the window, we should be careful" he said as Bill nodded, "stairways clear boys let's go" the young woman called descending with the other free close behind.
At the bottom of the stairwell there was more signs of nearby infected, blood and body parts as well as groaning and mumbling from nearby, Bill slung his M16 over his shoulder and drew his combat knife and magnum pistol, "let me deal with them" he whispered taking point and moving through the pitch black corridor to toe wards the next stairwell.
He snuck up on a common leaning against the wall, Zoey gritted her teeth as a horrible slice sound occurred followed by the body crumpling and blood spraying from the throat wound, "I can see the outside here come on people" he said as at the bottom of the next stairwell was the back exit from the apartment building.
They made it to the bottom of the stairwell and were walking towards the back door when groaning from behind caused them all to spin around, "somethings through there in the main lobby area" Louis said as the creature continue to gargle and groan, "Zoey recoiled in disgust whatever it was it sounded like it had a lot of stuff stuck in its throat. Louis and Zoey both moved quietly towards a shut door that led to the lobby area, the groaning got louder as Louis quietly pushed the door slowly open inch by inch and they both nervously moved into the doorway they both went wide eyed as with its back to them near the front door to the apartment building stood a bloated figure. It was large and bloated and its arms and part of its face were covered in huge pus filled boils, they both watched nervously as the creature payed them no mind, "what is it!" Zoey hissed as Louis shook his head, "I don't know" he whispered as they both slowly backed away.
Francis kicked open a door opposite to where they were standing from the other side of the lobby area, "you ladies born in a barn we have to get moving!" He yelled loudly before laying eyes on the mutant infected, "what in gods green earth is that fat thing!" He yelled as Bill rushed up behind him, Bill frowned he could see the figures left eye was covered by boils but it's right eye was untouched and a deep crimson colour, the creature bellowed as it laid eyes on the two older men, Bill then went wide eyed as the creature burped seeing the green fluid down its chin and front, "that looks like the stuff he found in the alley way… he never got the chance to finish his thought as what happened next was truly disgusting and utterly horrid in every sense.
The creature threw up thick green foil smelling fluid over Francis who immediately yelled and covered his eyes, Zoey watched from behind utterly horror struck as angry screaming and shouting began to sound all around, feet banging on the floor boards above as doors was punched and kicked, hands began to smash and claw through the doors and windows in front of them the common infected white eyes had turned a deep red enraged by something… "Francis that stuff it's like cat nip… it's bringing all the infected to you" She yelped as the large figure turned to face e her and Louis Bellowing in rage as Francis continued to swat at his face as Bill looked all around him in shock as infected were trying to get towards Francis from all directions… Louis turned around at the sharp scream from behind to met Face to Face with a hooded figure crouched on all fours, "shit…" he said raising his Uzi as the bloated figure began to waddle towards Zoey who raised her pistol in terror as Common infected began to storm through doorways towards Francis… "what the hell have you done Francis!" Bill cursed raising his Assault rifle as the biker continued to curse loudly unable to see clearly.
A zombie that attracted others to it with bodily fluids… Bill was right they were still changing…
