Chapter 41: Battle of the Frost

When it comes to 'last pushes', this one took the cake with how tough it was proving to be.

As I had worried about, Heino had indeed bolstered his main base with most of his troops. He had perhaps seen a degree of futility in reinforcing supply depots with how suddenly those fell, and he definitely felt paranoid enough to reinforce his base. And had this happened within a circumstance of lacking preparation, perhaps aided by his allies in Sinmara's council, that would have been a deadly loss for us.

But as Sinmara purged these traitors, the war plan shifted to a rather ruthless attitude. There were frost cannons shelling the thick stone walls around Heino's main base, with icy mist freezing the cannon fodders manning said walls and allowing for the main assault to slam through almost unopposed. The battle was quite fierce all around, and I was once more stuck to babysitting duty.

Freya had seen battles, but this was a true war's clash. It was intense, so many individual fights making up a bigger canvas of a massacre. Red and guts spilled about as we rushed through, Freya's own bloodlust taking a main seat as she cleaved about, yet not fully abandoned to it as she was constantly pulled back from larger formations by yours truly.

I wasn't exactly holding back either as I too joined the bloodshed. This was my first war, and yet something within me echoed with what was happening. It was an alien feeling of familiarity as I found myself quickly shouting orders to some aimless troops who needed directions. They followed through, albeit confused, to my barking, and I found myself soon taken into the war haze.

I swung my sword, fought harshly and I found myself losing more and more what little moral shielding I had about being so cruel over my killing. This was normal, this was needed, this was war.

At this point, I was about close to my peak conditions before I entered this realm. I was definitely going to be twice as strong once I got out of the Dark World and... man, that was going to be difficult to handle when it comes to holding back from killing criminals.

Food for thoughts for later, for there was a war around me, and I felt too deep into it to care for future worries. As we were advancing through the many-layered defenses of Heino's forces, Freya and I managed to push through until we arrived to the main hall. There the higher guards of Heino gave grand battle, and we killed two so we could go through. Not enough to level up again, but there was no need as we bypassed them just fine with our current power.

Freya took the lead, blooded axe by her shoulder as she looked ready to end this, but soon found her glee ruined as we slammed our way onto the throne room. Sinmara had preceded us, same for Renji, but the sight welcoming us was not a pleasant one. Reiji was getting crushed by ice, while his wife was getting molested by frost slimes as Heino gleefully waved a strange amulet.

I was confused on how this came to happen considering Sinmara was not the kind of woman that would be tricked as easily as some Taimanin would but-

That explained what was going on. The way the bastard had predicted facing her had taken Sinmara by surprise. Even though Renji was effective by having his cleansing Taima energy, he was indisposed after chipping about half of the armor.

"Oh, so my little niece is-"

Freya took just a glance and knew where to strike. There was no space for monologues as the Frost Demon tried to divert the slimes to strike the approaching girl. What he didn't expect was a wave of black energy to slam onto him and made him hesitate. That one moment of hesitation which crystallized in the hand holding the amulet suddenly being detached from his body. He pushed Freya away, but without the slimes under his control, he found himself getting hammered by her parents.

I was sensing a onesided butchering, and while part of me wanted to join in, it kind of felt poetic for 'family to kill family'. Plus, with the sheer violence employed by the enraged Sinmara in seeing her little girl punched away, I doubted I was going to get the killing hit on Heino.

Nonetheless, the sight was cathartic and it brought an end to the civil war as the quest that led me to join the rightful side was now completed.

And I got an upgrade for that as my suit morphed into something a bit more different as my Moon Knight outfit got upgraded to 'Varia Knight'. Spots of my pure light-gray and white suit suddenly went pure black, even my hooded mask became as dark as the night, while my chestplate grew thicker and remained white. I definitely felt... edgier.

I needed help to get smuggled into the Incubus/Succubus Lands, and Sinmara had just a strange idea to do so which involve shipping me through 'urgent gift delivery' for the upcoming coronation of the new Queen.
