New Eridu was a city that never slept. The streets pulsed with energy from neon lights and the hum of tech-laden vehicles zooming across the skyline. Below, the labyrinthine alleyways buzzed with secrets, crime, and an unrelenting undercurrent of tension. It was in this vibrant city that Officer Zhu Yuan patrolled with unyielding resolve, her crisp uniform contrasting sharply with the ever-present chaos around her.
But today, she was not here for her usual duties. Today, Zhu found herself standing in front of an unassuming office building in the industrial district—one that belonged to Belobog Heavy Industries. The air was thick with the smell of oil, metal, and something more… dangerous. She had been assigned to meet a certain individual, and the mission had taken a very personal turn.
She tapped her foot impatiently, scanning the entrance like a hawk. A few moments later, the door to the building slid open with a faint hiss. A woman stepped out, her silhouette framed by the harsh industrial lighting behind her. Zhu's eyes narrowed as she took in the figure before her.
The woman was tall, athletic, and undeniably confident, her black hair cascading to her shoulders back. She wore a sleek, black tech suit that screamed high-end—with a subtle sheen that hinted at hidden gadgetry beneath. But what really caught Zhu's attention were the striking, almost identical features of this woman. The sharp cheekbones, the dark almond-shaped eyes, the faintest trace of a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.
Zhu took a step forward, her hand instinctively moving to her belt, where her taser rested. Her voice was firm, professional, but the underlying tension was undeniable.
"You're under arrest for identity theft, Grace."
The woman froze for a moment, blinking in genuine surprise before a laugh bubbled up from her throat. She folded her arms across her chest, one eyebrow quirked in amusement.
"Identity theft?" she said, a teasing tone dancing in her voice. "Oh, come on, Officer. You're really going to accuse me of that just because we look alike?"
Zhu's eyes narrowed even further. "Don't play coy with me. You think I'm stupid? You're Grace, aren't you? You're pretending to be me."
Grace took a step closer, her posture relaxed but her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Hmm, that's a funny way to greet someone. Maybe I should be flattered that you think I look that good. If I didn't know any better, I'd say we could be long-lost twin sisters."
The flippant comment hit Zhu like a brick wall. She felt the heat rise to her cheeks, her grip tightening on the edge of her belt. "This isn't funny, Grace."
"I'm not Grace," the woman responded, her voice taking on a lighter, more mocking tone. "But I'm sure I'd make a wonderful double, wouldn't I?"
Zhu's patience snapped. "Cut it out! You're giving me a headache! Every time I walk into the precinct, Belle calls me 'Grace'! Do you have any idea how many times I've had to correct her? She's convinced I've been moonlighting as a tech genius for Belobog Heavy Industries, and now you—whoever you are—are making my job harder than it needs to be!"
Grace grinned, amused by the officer's frustration. "Wow. You really are touchy about this, huh? Alright, alright, no need to get your panties in a twist. I'll give you this much, Officer—you're way more intense than normal. You're normally all cool and collected, you know? I'm just... well, me."
Zhu rubbed her temples, her patience rapidly reaching its limit. "I don't care if you're 'you' or 'someone else'. You're confusing the people around me, and that's dangerous. You need to change your look."
Grace raised an eyebrow and folded her arms. "Oh? You want me to change my look just because you can't deal with being mistaken for someone else? Now that's a bit rich, don't you think?"
Zhu's breath hitched. "I'm not Grace. I'm Officer Zhu Yuan, and I've got enough problems dealing with this city's crime syndicates without people like you showing up to mess with my identity!"
Grace shrugged, taking a slow step back and giving Zhu an exaggerated once-over. "I don't know. I think we could pull off the 'twin sister' thing pretty well. Maybe you could rock the white hair too. It's... breathtakingly striking."
Zhu's face reddened at the suggestion. "I'm serious, Grace. This isn't a joke."
But Grace wasn't done. She leaned in, tilting her head and giving Zhu a playful smirk. "You know, for someone who's so obsessed with not being confused for someone else, you sure are getting all worked up. Maybe I should keep the look just for the fun of it. A little chaos never hurt anyone, right?"
The officer gritted her teeth. This woman—whoever she was—was making her feel more flustered than she'd ever admit. "If you don't take me seriously, I will arrest you for impersonation. You can't just walk around with a look like that, making my life hell. It's dangerous."
Grace's expression finally shifted, though it was only slight. "Okay, okay. I get it. You're not Grace. You're a very angry officer with an issue with your sister's doppelgänger." She smiled slyly. "But here's the thing, Officer Yuan: I'm not going anywhere, and neither is my look. And honestly, I think you just need to chill."
Zhu's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "You—"
Before she could finish her sentence, the sound of an explosion echoed from a few blocks away, rattling the windows of Belobog Heavy Industries. The ground shook, and the city's skyline momentarily flashed bright orange as the shockwave hit.
Zhu's reflexes kicked in immediately. "Dammit!" She spun on her heel, grabbing Grace by the arm as she pulled her toward the entrance of the building. "This isn't over, Grace. But right now, we've got bigger problems."
Grace, still smiling, allowed herself to be pulled along. "Big explosion, huh? That's your idea of a fun day at work?"
Zhu didn't respond as they burst through the doors of the building, immediately gearing up for what could only be a new wave of chaos.
