Chapter 2: Secret Melodies and Stolen Glances
The duet performance was a triumph. Their chemistry, born from that stolen kiss and fueled by the secret humming beneath the surface, was undeniable. They received a standing ovation, even from a bewildered Glee club. Publicly, they reverted to snark and avoidance, but the secret lingered.
Navigating the halls of McKinley became a tightrope walk. A shared glance across the crowded cafeteria held more meaning than an entire conversation. A 'coincidental' brushing of hands while reaching for the same library book sent shivers down Rachel's spine. Santana would find excuses to corner Rachel in empty classrooms, the urgency of their stolen moments making each touch, each quick kiss, feel illicit and intoxicating.
Rachel found herself analysing Santana's insults for hidden affection, while Santana watched Rachel's dramatic pronouncements with a new, almost protective, glint in her eye. The secrecy was a heavy cloak, but also a thrilling one. They existed in a bubble only they knew about, their public animosity a carefully constructed stage play.
One afternoon, hiding in the projection booth above the auditorium, Santana traced the line of Rachel's jaw. "It's weird, Berry," she murmured. "Hating you is so much easier."
"Then why don't you?" Rachel whispered back, leaning into the touch.
Santana didn't answer, simply closing the distance between them again.
