I'm not exactly sure what this is but wanted to write a little, so buckle up and let's see where this road takes us. This story is going to take place 6 years after the finale. Hope you all like it!
The clanking of shoes against the wooden floors of the shop draws Kensi's attention. "Welcome."
"Sunshine Surf Company…that's fitting."
The brunette looks up from the t-shirt rack towards the front door, a little startled by the face that greets her. "Oh, hey, Ellen."
"Hey, Kensi."
"Don't take this the wrong way, but you don't seem like the surfing type."
A flat smile crosses the cop's face as she gets closer, her eyes beginning to roam around as she steps further into the quaint shop. "Oh, I'm not. The closest I get to the ocean is when I'm chasing a suspect on the Santa Monica Pier."
Kensi huffs a laugh, shaking her head as she steps out into the main aisle. Somewhere along the way Detective Ellen Whiting has become a friend to both she and her husband, which is crazy to think about. It started out slowly when their kids started dating 6 years ago and somehow morphed into this nice relationship as time went on. It's funny how life works out that way. But even though she's now a friendly face, the former NCIS agent feels a little suspicious about this unannounced visit.
"Is something wrong?" Kensi's brow furrows in worry.
Ellen waves her off. "No, no. Nothing like that. The kids said they wanted us to meet them here."
Kensi's about to open her mouth when Whiting's better half steps through the door. Every time she sees the woman, she has to actively tell her jaw to stay in place. Gina is drop-dead gorgeous with her springy, defined curls and mint green power suit. Definitely an odd pairing with Gina and Ellen, but then again, she and Deeks are a bit of a mismatch in appearance.
"Hi, Kensi."
"Hi, Gina, How are you?"
"I'm good. Are the kids here yet?"
Kensi looks towards the back of the shop where they usually come in, but all she's met with is her middle daughter behind the register, helping a customer. Maybe Deeks heard from Rosa and just forgot to tell her. So, she scans the room again, looking for a semi-mop of grey hair. "Hey, babe?"
"Y-yeah." There's a breathy answer from the corner of the room.
"Deeks?"
The former NCIS investigator pops his head out from behind the surfboards. "Yeah?"
Before she can get out another word, a small giggling object zooms past the women, causing Whiting to jump and forcing Kensi to bite back a laugh.
"P!" Deeks yells across the room towards the back, drawing Pilar's attention.
The 20-year-old laughs as she wraps the little girl in her arms. "Got her!"
Deeks comes to a stop by Kensi, sticking his thumb up in approval as he bends over panting, trying to catch his breath.
Kensi shares a smile with Ellen and Gina as her hand finds Deeks' back, patting it. "I told you not to give her that second one."
"What kind of 5-year-old gets that much energy after drinking a smoothie?" The blonde looks at his wife, baffled.
"Babe, I've seen you get that much energy after eating a single peanut."
He tilts his head, eyeing his wife, and can't fight the smile, remembering that one stakeout she really did almost kill him. "Touché."
"Did Rosa tell you anything about her and Steven stopping by?" Kensi asks.
"No."
"Oh, that was my bad." Pilar says as she now chases the little speed demon that is her little sister. "I was supposed to tell you they're coming by and wanted to talk to you guys and Steven's parents together."
"Did she say what was going on?"
"Um." The young woman meets her mom's eyes and then her dad's. She's clearly trying to come up with an answer, but before she can, a series of balls hitting the floor sounds. "Malia duty."
Kensi's just about to open her mouth to call after her when Rosa and Steven walk in with bright smiles on their faces. "Hey, sweetie."
"Hey." Rosa saddles up next to Kensi, and Steven next to Gina, enclosing their circle near the front of the shop.
"So what's up?" Whiting asks, making no room for small talk.
Rosa gives Steven a look before they both turn to their respective parents with nervous smiles. Steven goes to open his mouth, but before he can get any words out, a panic-filled Deeks can't seem to stop the word vomit from spewing out of his.
Latching onto Kensi's arm to steady himself, his eyes grow as wide as saucers. "Oh, god, she's pregnant. You're pregnant, aren't you? She's too young." He turns to Kensi, and the usual calm he meets in her mismatched eyes is replaced with confusion. "Kens, you're too young to be a grandma. I'm too young to be a grandpa. She just finished college and has her whole life ahead of her. What are we going to do? Are they going to live with us? Are they going to live with you?" The blonde turns to Whiting and Gina in question before he starts pacing back and forth. "We just got out of waking up every hour of the night because of a non-sleeping baby." How are we going to divvy up the holidays? Do we need to buy a bigger house? I guess it's good that Lia will have a buddy for life. I always thought it was cool when one of my classmates had an aunt or uncle only a few years older than them. Okay, we can do this."
He takes a deep breath, and his shoulders relax as he stops in his tracks, finally looking at the others. "What?"
Whiting's mouth opens first. "Have you ever thought about becoming an auctioneer?"
Kensi's eyes beam with joy. In all the time that they've known her, that's probably the funniest thing she's ever said. Who knew Detective Ellen Whiting had a funny bone in her?
"I'm not pregnant." Rosa shakes her head.
Deeks almost collapses on top of Kensi in relief. "Okay, what is it then?"
Steven lifts up their intertwined hands with a smile. "We're getting married."
