Chapter 35: Fate and the Gentle Breeze
Naruko made her way through the winding paths of the Hyuga compound, the serene elegance of the surroundings contrasting with the tension she felt. She knew this visit was going to be difficult. Neji Hyuga, filled with his beliefs about fate and the burden of his cursed seal, was not an easy person to reach. But Naruko had never been one to shy away from a challenge.
As she neared the training grounds, she saw him. Neji was alone, as she expected, his movements sharp and precise as he went through his training regimen. His Byakugan was activated, his strikes filled with the kind of focus and anger that only someone who felt trapped could display. He was fighting more than just an imaginary opponent—he was fighting his own destiny, though he had long since accepted that it was futile.
Neji was well aware of Naruko's presence before she even arrived. He had heard rumors about her, the strange kunoichi with her bubbles and her quiet, cryptic philosophies. She had been spending time with his cousin Hanabi, encouraging her to embrace change and think beyond the limits of their clan. It was foolishness, Neji thought. Fate had already written their paths. There was no escaping it.
Naruko, as always, approached with a calm and steady pace, blowing a few bubbles from her pipe as she neared him. The soft pop of the bubbles in the air was the only sound besides Neji's strikes.
"You're wasting your time," Neji said without turning to look at her, his voice cold and dismissive. "Whatever it is you've come to say, I'm not interested. Fate has already decided everything for me."
Naruko smiled faintly, her eyes soft as she watched him. "Fate is like the wind, Neji. It blows in all directions, sometimes fierce, sometimes gentle. But no matter how strong it seems, the trees still stand tall, their roots deep in the earth. Fate may blow through our lives, but it does not define us. It simply shapes the path."
Neji paused for a moment, his brow furrowing as he finally turned to face her. His expression was filled with skepticism. "Your philosophies are meaningless. You may have influenced Hanabi, but I am not so easily swayed. I am bound by my fate, by the seal on my forehead. There is no overcoming that."
Naruko stepped closer, blowing another bubble, watching it float lazily toward Neji before she spoke again. "You are like a tree in the forest, Neji. Strong, proud, deeply rooted. But even the greatest trees bend with the wind. They do not break, but they adapt. They grow taller, stronger, reaching toward the sun despite the storms that try to pull them down."
Neji clenched his fists, the frustration boiling just beneath the surface. "I cannot change what I am. I cannot escape my fate. The seal binds me. My life has already been decided. There is no changing that."
Naruko's gaze softened further, a sadness entering her eyes as she understood the depth of Neji's pain. Slowly, she lifted her shirt just enough to reveal the intricate seal on her stomach, the very mark that housed the Nine-Tails within her. "We all carry burdens, Neji," she said quietly, her voice filled with a quiet strength. "This is mine. This seal—this fate—was forced upon me from the day I was born. I didn't choose it, and it has shaped my life in ways I couldn't have imagined. But that doesn't mean I'm bound by it. It doesn't mean I have to let it define me."
Neji's eyes widened slightly as he looked at the seal, his mind racing. He had heard of the Nine-Tails, of the immense power it held, but seeing the seal on Naruko's body—knowing she carried such a burden—was something else entirely.
Naruko lowered her shirt, her eyes meeting Neji's with an unwavering gaze. "Fate is not something you run from, nor is it something you surrender to. It's something you face head-on. It's a part of you, yes, but it's not all of you. Just like the wind and the tree—they exist together, and yet the tree still grows, still reaches for the sky."
Neji's expression hardened, though there was a flicker of doubt in his eyes. "You don't understand. The seal... it's not something I can simply overcome with words. It's a curse, a mark of my destiny. I am nothing more than a branch of the Hyuga, bound to serve the main family for the rest of my life."
Naruko stepped closer, her voice soft but filled with conviction. "And yet you stand here, training, fighting, pushing yourself beyond the limits of what others expect of you. You are already breaking free, Neji. You just don't see it yet."
Neji's jaw tightened, but he remained silent, listening despite himself.
Naruko blew another bubble, watching it rise into the air before speaking again. "You are like the breeze, Neji. You think you are bound by the winds of fate, but the truth is, you are the wind itself. You have the power to shape your own path, to rise above the limitations placed on you. It may not be easy, but nothing worth achieving ever is."
Neji's mind raced with conflicting thoughts. For so long, he had believed that his fate was inescapable—that he was bound by the seal, by his place in the clan. But Naruko's words, her calm presence, and the sight of her own seal, her own burden—it stirred something within him. A question. A doubt. A possibility that maybe, just maybe, he wasn't as trapped as he thought.
Naruko's voice softened even further as she knelt down, her eyes level with his. "You are not alone, Neji. Just as the great trees of Konoha stand tall, reaching for the sky despite the storms, so too can you find your way. Fate is ever-present, yes, but so is change. Like the wind, it is constant, and it can guide you if you let it."
Neji stared at her, his expression unreadable, but the anger and resentment in his eyes had lessened. He was still conflicted, still bound by the beliefs he had held for so long. But Naruko's words had planted a seed of doubt—a seed that, in time, might grow into something more.
Naruko stood slowly, her presence as calm as ever, the bubbles floating around them like a gentle breeze. "The wind may blow, Neji, but you are not a leaf to be carried by it. You are the tree, and you have the strength to stand tall, no matter how strong the storm may be."
And with that, she turned and began to walk away, leaving Neji to his thoughts. But before she left the training grounds entirely, she blew one last bubble, watching it float toward him before it disappeared into the wind.
Neji remained where he stood, his gaze fixed on the spot where Naruko had been. Her words echoed in his mind, challenging everything he had believed about himself, about his fate. For the first time in a long time, Neji felt something shift within him.
Perhaps... fate wasn't as unchangeable as he had thought.
