SmackDown: 8/6/2000

SmackDown was live at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York. Chris Jericho brought the crowd at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, N.Y., to its feet as SmackDown kicked off Thursday night. Y2J took on Test in a King of the Ring Qualifying Match. As the match began, Test used power moves to take Jericho down, but Y2J stayed in the thick of things. After a back and forth contest, Jericho was able to pull off the win with a Lionsault. Jericho will now move on to the King of the Ring Tournament!

As green and black balloons and confetti fell from the ceiling, the McMahon/Helmsley Regime came to the ring for a celebration party. Even though Triple H had regained his title nearly three weeks earlier, this was the first opportunity the group had to actually celebrate. The Game thanked the special people in his life, specifically his wife, Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley.

As the group hugged, The Rock's music played, and the People's Champion made his way to the stage. The Rock demanded payback from Triple H - but the Game made a case that The Rock should instead look to the Undertaker for payback. After all, said the Game, it was the Undertaker who cost The Rock the title at Judgment Day and the ensuing title match on RAW. That brought out the Undertaker, who cleaned house on DX for a while. But DX regained the advantage, and just as the Undertaker was being overpowered, The Rock ran to the ring to clean house. In the melee, the Undertaker accidentally hit The Rock with a chair after X-Pac moved out of the way. The Taker then nailed Triple H with the chair.

Backstage, The Rock asked Kane where the Undertaker went. When Kane didn't answer, Rock got mad, and the two wound up duking it out.

Too Cool defended their Tag Team Championship against the Godfather and Dean Malenko next. Although the fun-loving Malenko and Godfather put up a good fight, Grandmaster Sexay was able to pin Malenko after a Hip Hop Drop.

In the McMahon/Helmsley locker room, the Regime discussed what had happened just moments earlier, and then made the main event for the evening - Triple H, Road Dogg and X-Pac vs. Kane, The Rock and the Undertaker.

Next up, the Bladewolf defends his Intercontinental Championship against Jeff Hardy.

OOOOOOOOWWWWHHHHOOOOOOO!

'Ooh, wah-ah-ah-ah! Get up, come on, get down with the sickness!'

Down with the Sickness by Disturbed played to a big pop from the crowd as the Bladewolf walked out, accompanied by Trish Stratus. He had the WWF Intercontinental Championship around his waist. The couple make their way to the ring as the bell rings and Tony Chimel begins introductions.

"The following contest is scheduled for one-fall and is for the World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Championship! Making his way to the ring first, accompanied by Trish Stratus, from Death Valley, weighing 310 lbs, he is the World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Champion... THE BLADEWOLF!" Tony Chimel announced.

Hitting the ring, Bladewolf takes off his Intercontinental Championship and hands it to the referee before removing his vest which he hands to a stagehand. He gives Trish a peck on the lips before she gets out of the ring as Bladewolf's theme dies down.

The Hardy Boyz' theme plays to a pop from the crowd as Jeff Hardy comes out and starts making his way down towards the ring. "And his opponent, from Cameron, North Carolina, weighing in at 217 lbs... JEFF HARDY!"

This will be the first time that the Bladewolf and Jeff Hardy are in one-on-one action together. The only time they've ever encountered each other is during tag team action, such as when last June, the Hardy Boyz defeated Bladewolf and Kane to win the WWF Tag Team Championship.

Jeff hits the ring and goes to one of the corners, posing, before he gets down and faces the Bladewolf who stands across from him without ever taking his eyes off him. Hardy's theme dies down as the two stand across from each other, and then the referee calls for the bell.

'Ding! Ding! Ding!'

Bladewolf comes right out of the box with a big right hand, knocking Hardy back against the ropes. However, Jeff quickly comes back, blocks a right from Bladewolf and lands one of his own, then darts through his legs and kicks the back of the left one, dropping Bladewolf to a knee. Jeff follows it up with a dropkick to the back, sending the Intercontinental Champion onto his front. Bladewolf pushes himself up a little and glares at Hardy who had backed off and was watching him now.

Bladewolf gets to his feet, briefly adjusting his right elbow pad, and the two wrestlers circle each other before locking up. However, Bladewolf uses his superior size and strength to toss Hardy into the corner and goes for a right but Hardy ducks out of it and clobbers Bladewolf in the face a couple of times before he is shoved back. Hardy rolls to his feet and then runs at the Bladewolf who comes out of the corner with a big clothesline that nearly takes Hardy's head off. Bladewolf hooks the leg! ONE! TWO-! Hardy kicks out at two!

Bladewolf gets to his feet, grips Hardy by the hair and pulls him up before shoving him into the corner. Bladewolf glares at the referee when he tried to warn him, scaring the referee back. Bladewolf walks over to Hardy and delivers a boot to the stomach, making Hardy clutch the midsection. Bladewolf pushes Hardy up and lands a big right hook to the jaw, then pushes Hardy back again before landing another big right hand, sending Hardy onto the top rope before he drops down to his knees.

Bladewolf walks behind Hardy and then grabs him around the waist, lifts him off his feet fir a German Suplex... BUT HARDY LANDS ON HIS FEET! Hardy runs with Bladewolf following behind, jumps up from the second turnbuckle to the top and... COMES OFF WITH A SPINNING DIVE ONTO BLADEWOLF!

Bladewolf rolls away and into the corner, climbing to his feet. Hardy makes it to his and runs at the Intercontinental Champion who sees him coming and bends low to send Hardy overhead. Hardy lands on the ring apron and Bladewolf turns into a right forearm to the head, making him stumble back. Hardy climbs to the top turnbuckle and then jumps off... AND HITS A MISSILE DROPKICK! Hardy crawls over and hooks the legs! ONE! TWO! THR-! Bladewolf kicks out!

Hardy shakes his head and gets to his feet, pulling Bladewolf up with him. He then attempts to lift the Intercontinental Champion, but is unable to lift the over 300 lb man, who then takes advantage by driving his knee into Hardy's midsection. Jeff Hardy backs off, clutching his ribcage, before he runs at the ropes, bounces off, ducks underneath a right from Bladewolf who turns around... INTO A SPRINGBOARD MOONSAULT FROM THE ROPES BY HARDY! HARDY HOOKS BOTH LEGS! ONE! TWO! THRE-! Bladewolf kicks out at two!

Hardy slaps the mat in frustration when Bladewolf pushes him onto the mat, grabs his left arm and... LOCKS IN THE DEATHBITE CROSSFACE! Hardy yells in pain as Bladewolf locks the hold in tightly and... HARDY TAPS OUT! THE BLADEWOLF RETAINS!

'Ding! Ding! Ding!'

Down with the Sickness plays as Bladewolf gets to his feet and leans on the ropes. "Here is your winner and STILL World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Champion... THE BLADEWOLF!" Lillian Garcia announced.

Trish slides into the ring with the Intercontinental title in hand, and hands it to her boyfriend who raises it and then turns around... INTO A CHAIR SHOT TO THE SKULL BY CHRIS BENOIT!

Trish backs off with her eyes wide and her hands over her mouth as Benoit stands over the downed Intercontinental Champion. Benoit lets out a sadistic smile before picking up the title and raises it.

"This is mine!" He shouts down at the Bladewolf. "I'll be taking this back! Keep it safe for me."

He drops the title, and then drives the edge of the chair into Bladewolf's midsection before dropping it and takes his leave as his theme plays. Bladewolf clutches his midsection as Trish comes to his side to check on him. The Intercontinental Champion managed to turn and glare at the smirking Benoit before SmackDown went to commercial break.

And that's it for this chapter.
