Note…Peyton only dated Nathan and Jake in high school, she and Lucas were never together. Luke dated different people and was good friends with Brooke and Hailey in high school.
Brooke was just finishing hanging up a collection of prom dresses in her store window that evening when Peyton called her.
"Hey, what's up?" she asked.
"Hey girl, Jake got a bombshell at work today. Do you remember his ex-girlfriend, Nicki?"
"Vaguely, I haven't seen her in almost eight years. Why? Is she back in town?" she asked, sensing her friend was sounding a little frantic. She hoped Nicki wasn't going to move back to town and try to come between Peyton and Jake.
"She was and she has a daughter now and she's claiming this is Jake's daughter."
"Really? What did Jake say to her?" Brooke asked.
"Nothing, because he says Nicki just took off with her boyfriend Chris and left her daughter, Jenny, behind."
"Oh my gosh!" Brooke said, "How could she do that? Didn't she at least leave any contact information."
"Unfortunately, no, and she only left Jenny with a backpack. Jake and I are calling Nicki's mom in Tennessee, trying to reach out to see if she knows anything," Peyton explained. "I feel so bad for her, she says her mom sometimes leaves her with friends when she's too busy to watch her."
"So, is she with you at the house now?"
"Yep, Jake left work early and brought her here. He left his cell number and address in case Nicki comes back there looking for Jenny."
"How could Nicki have kept this from Jake? Do you believe her?" Brooke asked.
"I have no idea why she kept it secret. But the timeline matches up."
"Right…that makes sense. Maybe that's why she dropped out before we graduated?" Brooke said.
"I don't know what's going through her mind," Peyton said.
"You seem pretty calm considering," Brooke said.
"Well, I'm keeping it together for Jake. He's a great dad and it seems like we're getting a new addition to our family, but he's still shaken up at the news," Peyton told her.
"I bet..poor Jake..it must hurt to know Nicki kept their daughter a secret. How's Jenny? Is she freaked out?"
"She's reading to Lizzy some of her books now, but she keeps asking about her mom. Do you think you could you stop on the way back here and pick her up a few clothes and accessories? We really don't have anything for a seven-year-old and I hate to leave Jake here alone and have run out with Lizzy and Ethan."
"Sure, I can pick up some outfits to get her started."
"Thanks, you're a lifesaver. She's really shy. I think I might have to give her the guest room for tonight, if you don't mind the pull-out in Jake's office. Sorry, but this is so unexpected," Peyton continued.
"That's okay my rental condo should be ready soon anyway. My day was pretty unexpected too, I had Julian show up and get into an argument with Lucas."
"Seriously?" Peyton asked.
"Yeah, he was angry at me and then at Lucas when he showed up. I ended up telling him who Julian was cheating with."
"I thought it was just some random from his movie set," Peyton said, confused. "Did you recognize her?"
"It was Lindsey," Brooke said. "I just didn't have the heart to tell Luke and he took it pretty hard."
"Lindsey?" Peyton repeated in disbelief. "Luke's wife, Lindsey? How could she?"
"I know I can't wrap my head around it," Brooke said.
"That's terrible, but he has a right to know."
"Yeah, he called her and she denied it. Which is why I didn't want to get in the middle of their relationship in the first place. Luke's been hanging out at the store with me the past few hours ever since Julian came by."
"Luke stayed with you?"
"Yeah, I think he was worried Julian might come back if he left. I told him he didn't have to, but he's writing at my desk in the stock area."
"That was nice of him. How did he end up finding out the truth about Lindsey?"
"Because Julian knew Lindsey is pregnant," Brooke said lowering her voice. After she filled Peyton in on the rest of what happened, she finished closing down her computers for the night and went to find Lucas.
"How are you doing?" she asked, tentatively.
"Been better," Luke said, meeting her gaze.
"Getting any work done?"
Luke shook his head no. "Just trying to figure out what's really going on with Lindsey."
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you it was Lindsey sooner."
"I get it, it sucks, she's denying it too."
Brooke nodded, "so what next?"
"I don't know we've been together for years, now I'm having a baby with someone who is sneaking around behind my back. It's a lot to take in."
"I'm sorry," Brooke said.
"I don't know what to do because it's been a hard year for her with her dad dying and we've actually had two miscarriages before this one."
"You do whatever feels right to you," Brooke said sympathetically.
"Right now, I just want to clear my head, get my mind off everything that happened today."
"I have an idea," Brooke said.
Luke arches an eyebrow at her, "Oh yeah?"
"Come shopping with me, Peyton and Jake got the surprise of their lives today and need reinforcements."
"Who are we shopping for exactly?" Luke said, packing away his laptop.
"Remember Nicki? Jake's old girlfriend? Well, they had a daughter together and she never told Jake about her until today."
Luke was speechless.
"You can help me find her some cute clothes and stuff for her room," Brooke added. "She's staying with Jake and Peyton at least for the time being."
"Nicki has a daughter?" Luke asked, stunned.
"Yeah, she's seven, and Peyton said Nicki just left her behind at Jake's office. It's pretty heart-breaking"
Luke couldn't believe Nicki had a daughter. He couldn't help question the one night they spent together when they met at a party and he gave her a ride home. Nicki had invited him in and they spent the night together. Of course, Luke realized he made a big mistake especially considering Jake was his good friend. It wasn't long after that she dropped out of school altogether.
"Brooke, I have to tell you something," he said as they drove to the mall. His conscience was weighing too heavily and he needed to talk to someone he could trust.
"What?" she asked, looking up from changing the radio station.
"It's about Nicki," he said as Brooke gave him a curious look. "We had a one-night-stand back in high-school. You don't think it's possible that Jenny is my daughter."
His words hung between them, while Brooke considered this new development.
"I don't know, it's probably unlikely but – when did it happen?"
"Her and Jake were in a fight around a month before she dropped out and we happened to run into each other at one of Tim's parties. I never said anything because Jake was my good friend and it wasn't gonna happen again. Her having a daughter though, now I don't know what to do."
"Yeah, that changes things," Brooke agreed. "The odds are in Jake's favor, but I wonder if that's why she didn't tell Jake about being pregnant in the first place, you know?"
"Because she wasn't sure if the baby was mine or Jake's, that might have held her back from saying anything," Luke agreed, feeling like his past was coming back to haunt him.
While Brooke browses the girls' section selecting a few pairs of jeans and leggings in assorted colors, Luke is nearby on his phone talking to Lindsay.
"I don't know when I'll be home…because something came up," he saying in a strained voice.
"I have had a lot to deal with today too," he says into the phone after another pause.
Not wanting to intrude, Brooke looks in another area at the t-shirts and sweatshirts. She has no idea what Jenny likes. She is selecting a few cute dresses to go over the leggings as Luke comes up behind her.
"This looks like something you would have liked at Jenny's age," he smiles mischievously, holding a set a pink and purple leopard print headbands.
She smiles and takes them, examining the quality.
"Sure, you're not going overboard?" he asks with amusement, as she tries to balance everything in her arms, while continuing to search.
"We still need some basic items and maybe pajamas," she tells him.
"Will you let me hold those for you?" he insists, taking the clothing from her.
"Thanks for coming," she says, feeling more settled having him close. Ever since he joined the basketball team, he's been a constant in her life. They dated other people in high school, but there was once, that Brooke thought they could have meant more to each other. When her date for junior prom stood her up, Luke stepped in and they went as a couple. She held onto the photo they took at the dance because it had been such an amazing night. After high school, they went their separate ways Brooke to design school and Luke had a scholarship to play basketball. When Luke married Lindsey, they moved back to his hometown.
After Luke drops Brooke back off at her car, he drives home to talk to Lindsey. He passes a pub they used to go to, and Lindsey's tan ford explorer jumps out at him. He finds this odd, since she's pregnant. He pulls in next to her car and goes inside the bar, only he can't find her anywhere.
"What can I get you?" the bartender asks.
"Nothing -wait," Luke says before he turns away. "Have you seen her in here?" he holds up a picture of him and Lindsey on his screen saver.
"I'm not too sure," the bartender answers hesitantly.
"Her car is parked outside," Luke continues to scan the interior, wondering if she's in the bathroom.
"I don't know," the bartender shrugs walking away to get a refill.
