As they were all sitting in the bullpen the next day, they watched Adam get everything ready for the detective's exam.
Kim and Jay were sitting at their desks, getting out the case files they had on their desks. "Excited for the detective's exam, Adam?" Kim asked, looking at him.
Jay and Hailey, both elite detectives known for their keen instincts sharp minds, found themselves in an awkward moment as they simultaneously coughed, trying to mask their embarrassment.
Adam rolled his eyes and looked at them. "You two think you're so funny, don't you," he said sarcastically, giving them and smile.
Adam rolled his eyes again, nodding his head. "Yeah, I know that already. You two are like the biggest rule followers I know. You never break any," he replied, giving them a smirk.
Both Jay and Hailey shrugged, giving him a smug look. "Yeah, that's why we're the elites," Hailey said, patting Jay's leg.
Jay smiled and nodded, crossing his ankles on her lap. "We've worked a lot of hours. There's a lot of paper and desk work but we're good at it," he chimed in, putting his hands behind his head.
Adam knew that both of them were the top detectives in the district. They'd both worked countless hours on cases to try to solve them.
"Yeah, yeah... I know. You're both good detectives. You've earned your titles. I get it," he replied, rolling his eyes.
Jay thought of a possible exam question. "Adam, what's 10-31?"
Adam thought about it for a few seconds before answering. "10-31? That's officer needs assistance. Right?"
Jay made a buzz. "Crime in Progress."
Adam rolled his eyes, shaking his head. "You and your damn radio codes," he said, shaking his head.
Jay noticed the time and looked at Adam. "Adam! The exam starts in ten minutes!"
Adam looked up at the clock, seeing that they were indeed down to minutes before the exam.
He quickly gathered up his things, putting them all into one of the bags. "Crap! Thank you, man!" he said as he stood up, adjusting his jacket.
Jay nodded, standing up to wish him good luck.
"You got this, man! Don't overthink the questions! You'll overthink them if you try to think of some of the ones Voight might use," he said, watching him.
"Okay! Okay! I know! Just gonna go out there, focus, and kick ass!" Adam said excitedly, grabbing the bag with his stuff in it.
"That's right! Go out there, be your charming self, and you'll kick ass!" Kim said, smiling at him.
Everyone was wishing him luck and sending positivity his way.
It had been a few hours since Adam had left to take the test. He came back into the bullpen with a big smile on his face.
He was walking back towards his desk, the big smile still on his face.
Everyone looked over when they saw him come back with a smile. Kim was the first to speak up. "Hey, you're back. How long did it take you?"
Adam sat down at his desk, still smiling like crazy.
"It took me about two hours to take the test. I had to write a few essays for the writing part of the test," he said, dropping his bag on the desk.
All the others looked at him, seeing the big smile he still had on his face.
"You must have aced that test to be that happy about it," Hailey said, leaning back into her chair, using her hands to massage Jay's shoulders, who was sitting in her lap.
Adam nodded, still smiling like crazy. "Oh, I definitely aced that thing like it was the SAT's or something!" he said, leaning back into his chair.
Jay sunk back into Hailey's chest, wincing. "You know who you're shadowing yet?"
Adam shook his head, spinning around in his chair. "No. I need to wait to get the results of my test to find out who I'm shadowing. Probably won't get the results for a few weeks though," he replied.
Hailey put her arms around Jay's waist, pulling him back against her chest. "Yeah, we got the results a few hours after taking the test," she said, looking over at Adam.
Adam nodded, looking over to them.
"Lucky sons of bitches. I have to sit here and wait two whole weeks to find out!" he exclaimed, crossing his arms.
Jay chuckled, looking at him while still laying against her.
"You'll find out soon enough. If you aced it like you say you did, you're going to find out you'll be working under Voight pretty soon."
Adam smirked, leaning back in his chair. "That's what I'm hoping for. I mean, the test was pretty easy, so I think I did good."
"He's not an easy boss to please, let me tell ya," Hailey said, remembering the hell Voight had put her through during her training.
Adam shrugged, thinking it would still be worth it. "I can deal with being yelled at if I get this job," he said, stretching his arms over his head.
Jay shrugged, still leaning back against his wife.
"It's not just going to crime scenes and questioning suspects. There's other stuff you do too. A lot of paperwork, court appearances, and interviews too," he said, looking at Adam.
Adam nodded, hearing that there was more to being a detective. "Okay, I can handle paperwork and court appearances, but interviews? I'm not good at talking to people."
They all looked over when that heard Voight speaking.
"Yeah, if you want to learn how to be a great detective, then you need to learn how to interrogate people like Halstead here does," Voight said, patting Jay's shoulder.
Jay smiled at his praise, until Voight kept speaking. "Though, he's not a good example of a detective. He breaks the rules all the time, as you all know."
Everyone chuckled, seeing that Voight wasn't going to pass up the chance to knock his star detective down a few pegs.
Jay rolled his eyes, turning around in Hailey's lap to look at Voight. "Very funny, Sarge," he mumbled.
Voight chuckled, ruffling his hair.
"You know I'm teasing you, kid. I wouldn't have a job if you didn't do things the way you do. But the rest of them are great examples of what a good detective should be."
Adam looked confused, hearing that they weren't like patrol officers.
"So it's not like being a patrol officer? You don't just run to the calls and arrest the bad guys or the suspects?" he asked, watching them.
Everyone chuckled and shook their head.
"Nope, not at all. The majority of the job is desk work. Paperwork, court dates, talking to the victims or questioning any suspects. Very little of the job is actually running around town, trying to solve the cases," Kevin said, shaking his head.
Jay stood up, shrugging on his leather coat. "Babe, wanna pick up Bartoli's?"
Hailey nodded, grabbing her jacket from the back of her chair. "Yeah, that sounds good to me. I could go for some good pizza," she replied, slipping her jacket on.
Adam watched the couple getting ready to leave. He was stunned by how close they were.
"The hell? You guys are going to go eat lunch together? I thought detectives weren't allowed to do that," he said, still leaning back into his chair.
Jay and Hailey looked at each other, confused. "Who the hell told you we weren't allowed to go get some lunch together?" Hailey asked.
Adam shrugged, looking at them as they got ready to leave. "I don't know. I thought that all detectives aren't allowed to get personal with one another. I thought that was a rule."
Jay chuckled, grabbing his keys off his desk. "Whoever told you that was either a damn liar or an idiot. It's not at all against the rules for detectives to get close. If it was, Hailey and I wouldn't be married."
Adam was still stunned to hear that all detectives could be close. "Seriously? You don't have to treat each other like sworn enemies? You can actually act friendly?"
Jay groaned, closing his eyes. "My stomach's growling and this nutball is delaying us!"
Hailey chuckled, putting her arms in her jacket sleeves. "Alright, alright. Let's go. We'll deal with this guy's questions later. I'm hungry anyway," she said, putting her hand on Jay's back.
The other detectives chuckled, hearing how impatient the couple was getting.
Adam just watched the couple walk out the door, shaking his head. "I think they were more than ready to get out of here," he said, turning back to his desk.
Kim laughed and nodded, turning her chair to the desk. "Yeah, that's normal. Whenever Jay's stomach starts making noise, they have to leave immediately because he gets cranky when he's hungry," she said, logging into her computer.
Kevin nodded, opening one of the case files on his desk. "Yeah, when Jay's hungry, he's crankier than Voight without his morning coffee."
Adam chuckled, thinking that it was funny that Jay was so grumpy when he was hungry. "Seriously? He's crankier than Voight is when he hasn't had his coffee? Oh, hell no," he said, still laughing.
A short while later, Jay and Hailey came back to the bullpen, bags of pizza in their hands.
They walked in through the door, setting the food down on his desk. "Alright, we're back!" Jay announced, unpacking the pizza from the bag.
Everyone looked over at them when they walked back. "Ooooh, is this my favorite pizza? Please tell me you didn't forget my usual," Kevin said, eyeing the pizza.
Jay just smirked, throwing a wrapped up slice at Kevin.
"Here's your deep dish supreme. I remembered how you take forever to place the order, so I ordered it for you," he replied, picking up his own slice.
Kevin smiled and snatched the pizza slice before it hit the ground. "I love you, man. Did you get enough pepperoni on that thing?" he asked, taking a bite.
Jay rolled his eyes, plopping down into his chair. "Yes, there's plenty of pepperoni on it. I'm not a monster Kevin," he said, taking a bite of his slice.
Kevin nodded, taking another bite of his slice. "You could have been. I mean, you eat all that healthy kale stuff. I would be worried that you'd forget to pile on the pepperoni," he said while he was chewing.
Jay chuckled, shaking his head. "I might eat healthy stuff, but I'm not a monster. I wouldn't forget to put enough pepperoni on your pizza," he said as he continued to eat his pizza.
Hailey just sat back into her chair, smiling as Jay sat in her lap again, eating his toppings first. "You always eat the best parts first," she said, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Jay chuckled, nodding his head. "Of course I do. It's the best way to eat pizza," he said as he continued to eat the toppings.
Kim looked at them, shaking her head. "You always eat the toppings off first? You're the only person on the face of the planet who does that, you know that, Jay?" she asked.
Adam looked up from his detective binder. "Is this true? The detective on scene is in charge of the whole case?"
Jay nodded, placing the bread crust down to look at Adam. "When you're a detective, you're in charge of the whole case. Patrol officers aren't. When they respond to the scene, they're the first responders, but they don't have the skills or experience to process a scene or interview suspects. That's why detectives are called in as soon as the scene is declared a crime scene," he explained.
Adam nodded, taking notes in the notebook he was using to study.
"Alright, that makes sense that detectives process crime scenes. But when they're questioning suspects, how do you know what the truth is?"
Voight walked into the bullpen, seeing that the couple was getting annoyed with Adam's constant questions.
He saw that Jay was starting to tense up and grind his teeth together. He also saw that Hailey was starting to bite her bottom lip, which he knew was one of her ticks when she was frustrated or annoyed by something.
Voight chuckled, watching the couple start to get irritated. He walked over to the group of desks, leaning one hand on a desk.
"You know what, I think that's enough questions. How about we let Jay and Hailey get some work done before they get too annoyed?" he suggested, glancing over at Jay and Hailey.
Everyone turned their heads to look at Voight as he spoke. Kim chuckled, seeing how irritated the couple was getting.
"Yeah, I don't think they can handle anymore questions before they lose their cool," she said, trying to keep her laughter in.
Kevin chuckled too, glancing over at Jay and Hailey.
"Yeah, I think one more question and Jay's going to break a pencil or something," he said, noticing how Jay was gripping one of his writing pencils hard.
Voight nodded as he watched Jay. He could tell that he was seconds away from breaking the pencil in his hand.
"Yeah. I don't know about Jay, but I have a feeling Hailey will try to strangle the kid or something if he asks one more question," he said with a slight chuckle.
Voight looked at Jay and saw the pencil in his hand was moments away from snapping in two.
"Alright, enough. Let's get back to work, folks and let Jay and Hailey have a few minutes to themselves," he said, giving the pair a nod.
Jay relaxed again, laying back into Hailey's chest. Hailey just held onto his waist, nuzzling the back of his head.
Jay took a deep breath, setting the broken pencil down on his desk.
"I swear to God, if he asks me one more question, I'm going to snap this pencil in half," he mumbled, resting his head back on her shoulder.
Hailey chuckled, rubbing his stomach soothingly. "It's okay, baby. You'll get plenty of alone time later," she whispered, gently kissing his temple.
Jay just nodded, closing his eyes. "Yeah, because I'm going to need a lot of alone time right now to decompress after all those damn questions," he mumbled, relaxing against her.
Hailey smiled, running her fingers through his hair. "I know, my love. You can have all the time you need to decompress," she replied, holding him close to her.
