Anybodys could tell from the sound of those coppers' stupid sirens echoing against the walls of the space under the highway and the lack of any sounds of fighting that he had finally managed to find the site of the rumble, but he had gotten there too late to prove himself to the other Jets... the Jets by skillfully clobbering the PRs and protecting their hard earned turf.
...That strategy hadn't worked out for him yet, he hadn't been let back into the gang no matter how much fighting prowess he showed and how much spying he did for them, but it would have to eventually!
...The ship on it happening today had probably sailed, though...
Wait, why had Tony just called out the name of Bernardo's sister, the girl he had risked what little remained of the balance between the Jets and the Sharks with... if it could even be called that... by kissing her even though she was one of them and romantic relationships were never worth it even when they weren't with someone in an opposing gang?
As Anybodys burst through the pipe that connected the two sides of the fence that had separated him from the site of the rumble, he quickly realized that they had bigger problems now.
Who had those unsettling still bodies belonged to... oh okay that was Riff, Anybodys had never liked him, and the one Tony was despondently hunched over was... had he really managed to take out the leader of the Sharks?
Anybodys felt a conflicted mix of pride and jealousy for his friend at the realization that that really was Bernardo... fuck, that would have gotten him back into the gang for sure if he'd been the one to do that... but neither of them had time to dwell on this now like Tony was doing, the sirens of those goddamn coppers were getting louder.
Anybodys rushed towards him, grabbing him by the shoulders and shaking him.
"Tony, c'mon! C'mon, Tony, we gotta get outta here, c'mon!"
He finally managed to get him to stand up and remove himself from the deposed leader of their rival gang when he escalated to pulling him... fuck, Tony had never been this bad about being sentimental and meandering before he'd let himself drift apart from the gang for some reason, but now that he'd finally come back to them it seemed almost like they'd gotten a worse version of him.
Hopefully some more time around his brothers, his fellow Jets would help him snap out of whatever spell had come over him, to go back to fighting for them with all he had and being fought for by them instead of sympathizing and making out with the enemy who wanted to take the only source of security they had in the world besides each other, but for now Anybodys needed to make sure he didn't get separated from them yet again by getting arrested.
As he managed to get Tony to back away from Bernardo, he saw a bloodied knife on the ground next to him... probably the murder weapon... and went for it, grabbing it and looking in the direction of the sirens before going back to the still stunned and guilty for some reason Tony and grabbing him by the arm to emphasize his words to him.
"C'mon, Tony."
He ran back towards the pipe, quickly realizing that Tony still wasn't with him, turning back to him, and gesturing for him to come with him.
"C'mon!"
A spotlight hit him, only increasing his worry and frustration, and he gestured again exaggeratedly.
"Get outta here!"
He dove back into the pipe, quickly making his way through it and immediately going to the fence on the other side of it to make sure that Tony was leaving.
He saw him start to climb a different fence, stop as a spotlight hit him, and move meanderingly along it and then a wall, eventually stopping in frustration as spotlights started to move along that wall and him, and Anybodys called out to him again.
"C'mon!"
Tony held his head in his hands before finally moving at a decent speed towards the fence Anybodys was at, jumping onto it and scaling it like he was really trying to get somewhere now.
Anybodys gestured for him to follow him out of this place again, worried that the haste he'd finally found wouldn't be enough for him to escape the coppers.
Anybodys would be just fine with his prowess at slipping in and out of the shadows, he could hide right under the coppers' noses and they wouldn't know what hit them, but Tony needed to leave the site of his killing of the leader of their rival gang a minute before now.
"C'mon, Tony!"
Much to his relief, he heard him charging in the same direction as him behind him.
He'd probably be okay now, coppers always spent too much time putting on weight behind their desks to be able to catch up to someone even moderately in shape and in touch with the day to day struggles of real life for those who couldn't just sit behind a high and mighty desk all day and get an easy paycheck for that.
Hopefully he would be okay in all ways soon, not just with having the coppers off his tail, but with messing around with a girl from their opposing gang and not having reintegrated into his gang very well yet... although, could it really be called reintegrating if a Jet could never stop being a Jet in the first place?
When anyone who became a Jet was a Jet all the way from then on?
As they made their way back onto the streets, with Anybodys paying close attention to the sound of Tony's swift but more labored than usual footsteps behind him the whole time, he hoped that that would be proven true for him soon... Ice would be the leader of the gang now that Riff was dead, after all, he realized with a jolt of shocked glee, and he had promised to let him back into it if he ever came to lead it.
Was the goal he'd gone after for so long, that had defined so much of his life, finally happening?
Was he really finally gonna be back in the brotherhood?!
Anybodys turned around to talk to Tony about this, the words dying in his throat as he realized that he had gone and disappeared on him at some point in the approximately five seconds that he hadn't been paying attention to his whereabouts.
He would almost be impressed if he wasn't so frustrated by the realization that he was probably heading to Maria's apartment.
Tony's ways as a hopeless romantic had been annoying and flabbergasting when they hadn't crossed the line Anybodys had thought would be uncrossable of involving members of their rival gangs, but now they were even worse.
Now he wasn't just putting himself in danger in the traditional sense that romantic relationships were always inherently dangerous and involved a metaphorical death of the self, he was putting himself in danger of actually getting killed in a non metaphorical sense!
After Riff and Bernardo had gotten killed and everything!
And for what, the worst prize known to man, the oldest scam in the book that Anybodys had figured out was a ruse at like five?
He had to go spy on the Sharks, he realized, and see if they developed any plots to get even with Tony for Bernardo's death like the Jets would if their situations were reversed.
Maybe if he heard that Maria's fellow Sharks were planning on killing him, which they would probably make a scheme for, he'd finally knock this shit off.
Plus, if Anybodys used his shadow related prowess to gather information that would help Tony, that the other Jets would really want to know, maybe that and Ice's vouching for him would make them less hostile to the idea of him rejoining the gang and he'd finally get some support from them like Jets were supposed to get from their fellow Jets instead of just being resolutely rejected by them at every turn no matter what he did, no matter how steadfastly loyal he was.
He would rather prove himself to them through badass and macho fighting rather than his more passive skill of slipping in and out of the shadows, but if it worked it worked.
Having made a plan, Anybodys started to make his way to the roof above the apartment that had formerly been Bernardo and Maria and Anita's and now just belonged to the latter two where the Sharks held their meetings, slipping into the shadows that would hopefully help him save Tony and finally win the other Jets' favor.
