Story Start!

His daughter was dead.

He knew she had to be dead, it had been awhile since the zombie issues started in Japan, and power had gone out. TV stations were no longer sending news reports, and his TV couldn't pick them up anyway thanks to an EMP that had knocked it out. He never saw her corpse, but if she hadn't shown up with her fiance to check in on them, then he knew that she had to have died.

'Hinata, Naruto... I'm ashamed that I couldn't protect the two of you, and get you here fast enough.' Hiashi Hyuga laid in his bed and stared up at the ceiling. He was the head of his family, and while his youngest daughter had made it home recently, and a few branch family members had returned home to help build up their defenses, he had never heard from his eldest daughter or her fiance, his soon-to-be son in law.

A good, hard working man, who loved his daughter dearly.

"Father, please, eat something... the others, they need to know what to do. That demon boar hasn't allowed us to leave the mansion for days. Our food stores are getting low." Hanabi, a young 15 year old girl, held his hand. She stayed by his side during his depression, and she had stepped up to help the other family members in keeping the house clean, and making sure everyone was fed and taken care of. Several times, she had snuck out to go into the mountains to pick wild fruits, nuts, andf vegetables, but with the zombie boar on that mountain, they were stuck.

They had lost several family members to that demon of a boar.

"Hanabi, please, leave me for the moment." Hiashi just wanted to lament his loss in peace. He had lost the daughter who he had been emotionally distant from for most of her life, and he could never even tell her how proud he was of her. How beautiful she was, and how much she was just like her lovely mother. He couldn't tell Naruto that he was proud to welcome him into the family, and how he looked forward to the day he could share a drink with the boy.

He had so many regrets.

He would never be able to see Hinata on her wedding day, or Hanabi for that matter, because the world was pretty much over for humans. Hanabi would never be able to find a good man her age in this world now, and he would be forced to die with the knowledge that she would never become somebodies bride and find the happiness of motherhood.

"Hiashi, there are visitors are the front gate!"

"Turn them away, the Hyuga can only feed ourselves at this point. We don't have the resources to welcome any strangers." Hiashi told the branch family member who opened the door to his room. He didn't need to think on that. His family took priority over some people he didn't know, and with the zombie boar on the mountain, their food stores would shrink every day until they starved to death or were hunted down by the zombie boar when they escaped.

"It's Naruto!"

Hiashi sat up, before he forced himself to his feet.

-At the Front Gate-

"Sorry to make you do this Kohta." Naruto could barely walk by himself at the moment, so he was forced to borrow the much younger man's shoulder... and absolutely towered over him to the point that Naruto had to put most of his weight on Kohta. He wasn't the lightest of guys thanks to his height, and how much muscle he had.

Thankfully, Asami was helping take some of his weight off of the boy.

"The Hyuga Mansion in the mountains is... quite a bit larger than I expected it." Saya crossed her arms under her chest and looked at the high walls surrounding the large estate. The Hyuga were an old money family who stayed in the mountains to themselves normally, while her own family was a new money family who had earned their income in the last generation with her parents. She didn't expect much from the Hyuga.

The front gate started to open.

A middle aged man started to walk out to greet them, but he didn't say a word, instead, his eyes scanned all of their faces. He looked at Saeko first, but once he saw her face, his eyes turned down in disappointment. He looked at Shizuka, then scanned over Rei and Saya, before he looked at Alice, Asami and Kohta. With each person that he looked at, his disappointment in who they were seemed to increase.

Until he got to Naruto, and for the first time, his disappointment turned into happiness.

"Naruto... please... come in." Hiashi stepped to the side to allow everyone to enter his home. Shizuka helped Rei in first, since she wasn't in much better condition than Naruto. She had heavy bruising on her body, no broken bones thankfully, but she had taken a beating. Naruto didn't meet Hiashi's gaze when the man seemed happy to see him. '... I see... no Hinata, so she must have passed away.' Hiashi looked at Naruto and could see the shame there.

He guessed Hinata gave her life to save somebody, and then she requested that Naruto kill her to prevent her from becoming a zombie. He didn't say a word out loud, but he placed a hand on Naruto's back when the two helping him walk got him passed the gate. He pat Naruto's back a few times.

"I'm sorry."

"Thank you for coming home..." Hiashi responded to Naruto's apology. He knew his daughter, and he knew that the only way she could have died was if she sacrificed her life to save somebody else. He could only hope that Naruto put her down in a way that was painless for her, because he knew that Naruto was going to carry the pain of killing her for the rest of his life. He wasn't about to make the pain worse by pushing horrible blame onto Naruto. "... and thank you for being there for her in the end." Hiashi stated.

"... am I that easy to read?" Naruto muttered to himself.

"Nothing escapes the eyes of the Hyuga... and what Father doesn't know how to read his son's face, even if he is a son-in-law." Hiashi smiled, before entering the estate and gaining a serious look once more. "... All able bodied men, prepare to storm the woods. We'll be taking down the demon boar once and for all! Women of the Hyuga, take and care for the injured! Men, with me, it's about time that we reclaim this mountain!" Hiashi called out loudly for all of his clan to hear his cry.

It was time for him to lead his family once more.

-A Short Time Later-

"Well, that was humiliating. Why didn't you tell me you killed the boar?" Hiashi asked Naruto as he sat down next to him. Naruto was just in his boxers, with ointment getting applied onto his body. He didn't care to even look at the butt naked Rei, who had a towel over her butt as she got the Hyuga family ointment applied to her back.

Rei was blushing at a random older man being in the same room as her while she was naked, and make sure that her breasts were as covered up as possible, but Hiashi wasn't even looking at her. He really only had eyes for Naruto.

"I didn't want to ruin your moment." Naruto stated as he looked away from Hiashi.

"Well, thanks for that. Still, I'm happy to see you here, alive and... as well as you can be. Was that RV on the road yours?" Hiashi asked, since they found the boar's body right next to a flipped RV that had a lot of supplies in it. He had a group of Hyuga men working together to get it back onto it's wheels, so they could transport it back to the mansion. Hiashi reached into his sleeve, pulled out a warm beer, and passed it to Naruto. "Drink, it isn't much, and it's warm, but it's about time we have a drink." Hiashi stated.

"Sir, he's injured."

"Silence." Hiashi told the Hyuga branch woman who was putting medicine onto Naruto. Naruto just cracked open the beer and drank half of it, before passing it back to Hiashi, who finished it off. With that, Hiashi stood up and started to leave the room. "... I expect the group who came with you to pull their own weight. The Hyuga family isn't a charity. You and the girl here get some rest, your injuries will take time to heal." Hiashi for the first time looked at Rei.

"My name is Miyamoto Rei-"

"I didn't ask your name, and don't need it. The ointment my family makes it among the finest medicines for healing injuries to the body." Hiashi's gaze was filled with nothing but contempt and judgement for Rei as he looked into her eyes. She actually flinched back from the sheer intensity of his gaze, and how he seemed to be staring into her mind and soul. She was naked, but she felt like he could see far more than just what her body had to hold.

Even if she were fully dressed, she was sure that she would feel naked before his piercing stare.

She held her tongue.

Hiashi left the room.

"What an asshole." Rei muttered to herself, and Naruto just chuckled.

"Yeah... Hiashi is tough on the outside, but he's a big sofie when you get to know him. He was against me dating his daughter, and it took me years to prove myself to him. Once I proved myself to him, he gave me permission to marry his daughter and treated me like a son." Naruto smiled awkwardly as his bones were pushed against. Unlike Rei, he had taken the full front of a lot of attacks. He actually did have broken bones that would take even him some time to heal. He would need at least 2 weeks of taking it easy before he was back to full health.

Naruto frowned, before he looked down in shame once more.

"Is this about that Hinata you dated?"

"Dated, Lady Hinata was..."

"Can you please leave and not talk about Hinata right now?" Naruto asked the Hyuga branch member who finished putting ointment on him. His words, and expression, told the woman that he didn't want to really talk about Hinata. "Also, Rei... how would you feel if Takashi died, and I took you to his house, and asked you questions about him?" Naruto asked Rei.

"I'm not together with Takashi though."

"Rei." Naruto stated her name as a point, and she looked away.

"Yeah... yeah I would be upset too." Rei was over Takashi, but part of her would always love him too. If Takashi died, she would be upset, and she would hate to go to his home and be reminded of him. Even if the logical part of her mind told her that there was nothing she could do, and that she was over him and wanted to move on, part of her would still be sad and mourn him.

Takashi was still alive, and she felt bitter that he chose to stay with some cult than to come with them, but she respected his choice. It helped her move on, but she did wish that he had stayed with her group and stayed her close friend.

Emotions weren't logical.

-The Next Day-

"We had a good haul today, that Saeko girl and the Kohta boy were assets in the search for food. Many of the family are happy to have a young girl like Alice around to keep their spirits up, though many don't like Saya or Asami very much." Hiashi reported the situation to Naruto. He sat in front of Naruto, who was forced to stay in a futon next to Rei while the two of them recovered from their injuries. Neither of them could really move on their own at the moment. "Shizuka is currently banned from helping, she is far too clumsy to be reliable. Still, she has a good understanding of medicine and first aid. You've got a good group. That is all, I'll have a meal brought in to aid in your recovery." Hiashi stated as he stood up and left the room.

It was a short 5 minute conversation.

He didn't even look at Rei at all, but he was still making sure that she was taken care of and well fed to keep her body's recovery up.

Hanabi came in to the room 2 hours later with 2 plates.

"Sup Onii-chan, it's been awhile... and here you go slut." Hanabi put the plate gently in front of Naruto, before she rudely put it down in front of a shocked Rei.

"Sl-slut!?"

"Yeah, you're trying to seduce a man with a fiance, that makes you a slut. I understand there aren't a lot of good men to take, but that fat boy seems like he has a good head on his shoulders. Maybe you should try your luck with him, instead of going for my big bro?" Hanabi looked at Rei with just the most loathing that Naruto had ever seen from the girl. She didn't even wait for Rei to make a comeback before she walked out of the room.

"Kohta is a great guy, but he isn't my type, and I'm not a slut! I've only ever had sex with 1 guy, and I've only ever had 2 boyfriends!" Rei shouted out as she defended herself. "Can you believe her, calling me a slut... the nerve of her." Rei asked Naruto.

He stared at her.

"You do know that I was her sister's fiance right... and I'll bet she isn't happy that other girls are after me after her sister died... have a little sympathy for her. I'm sure that she will come around and start being nicer to you eventually." Naruto deadpanned, and he started to eat. He could understand where both sides were coming from, but Rei was older than Hanabi, so he was going to be holding her to a higher standard than he held Hanabi to. "She's about Kohta's age, so maybe cut her some slack. I mean, how would you feel if somebody killed your dad, and then somebody else tried to date your mom a few weeks after he died?" Naruto asked her.

Rei turned her head.

"You're right... but it still pisses me off. I didn't ask to fall for a guy who had a fiance. She's treating me like I did something wrong." Rei hissed and muttered as she angrily ate her food. "... and this food pisses me off. Why can't it suck... but nooooooo... the food has to be delicious." Rei found it hard to stay mad when she was being treated so well in the food department.

They stared at her with rude stares, and were rude to her, but they made sure she was well taken care of and well fed. It was hard for her to call them horrible people when they took such excellent care of her, and provided her with healthy meals to aid in her swift recovery. They were also treating her with high quality medicine that was starting to take effect.

"You're 17, she's 15, and home schooled. Just grit your teeth and bare it. I'll have a talk to Hanabi about this later when I can stand up on my own." Naruto wasn't completely going to take Rei's side, but he wasn't about to make the situation worse by causing a fight. If he was going to lecture Hanabi, he was going to do it when it was just him and Hanabi in the room.

-The Next Day-

"Can you believe it, Hinata was only this tall, but she was already baking cinnamon rolls with her mother... that girl has always had a soft spot for cinnamon anything."

"She did." Naruto smiled with closed eyes.

Hiashi was visiting him again, and this time he was making sure to have a conversation and tell him tons of stories about Hinata when she was a young, super young, girl. Hiashi seemed extremely happy to tell the stories to somebody.

The man was the happiest he had been since the zombies appeared.
