Today was family day at Clayton Valley Athletic Club. This is the day where children are allowed to be with their parents.
Catherine arrives first with her toys. David shows up with a giant grin on his face.
David says, "You're here, guess what?"
Catherine jumps up and down saying "What, what, what."
David says, "After dad's workout, he is going to take me for a shitviz."
Not aware that Catherine has ever heard Yiddish before.
Catherine says, "What is that?"
David says, "I dunno, its Jewish.
Catherine is now being curious of being Jewish.
Catherine's eyes get big and wide.
Catherine says, "Ohhhh, tell me more."
David says, "You don't have a bubbie that tells you these things?
Catherine says, "A what?"
David says, "Well uh, us Jews, have bubbies that tell us these things."
Catherine is confused and curious.
David says, "My Bubbie says I have a shanna cup all the time and says other words. My daddy says it's a fun thing to do."
Catherine says, "Cool, I wanna be Jewish too."
David said, "Earlier this year I had wine. Tastes like medicine though."
Catherine says, "Ohhhh, I brought my dolly. She shows her doll and toys.
David says, "COOL!"
They play with each other's toys making noises ignoring the red light green light game going on in the background. You could hear "This is the night" by lady and tramp movie playing the background as movies always played in the background… This was the start of something special between them.
Before you knew it both David and Catherine's parents were calling them.
Steve said, "David, David, David… hello." We had a shitviz, remember?!
After snapping out of it, David said, "Oh yeah."
Marie says, "Hey Catherine, how was your day?"
Catherine says, "I want to be a Jew. David says he has a Bubbie that says Yiddish words."
Marie says, "That is great Catherine."
Steve interjects and asks, "Do you and your family want to come to dinner after our steam bath?
Marie says, "I will have to check with my husband, Derry."
Steve says, "Great, I am sure Joyce won't mind. Just meet us at Sorrento's Italian at 6pm. But if we are five minutes late, don't worry, because we are always on Jewish standard time.
Marie says, "Okay, that sounds great. We will call you to let you know. May I have your number?"
Steve says, "Yes, it is 827-2731."
Both kids jump up and down defying gravity saying, "Yay!" in unison.
That evening at 6:05pm the Dixon's arrived outside of the restaurant to see the Lytells.
The owner of the restaurant greeted both families and sat them in the corner booth.
Sorrento's is the pre olive garden but a real family atmosphere restaurant.
Apollo the son of the owner was the waiter. He gave them bread and menus.
David and Catherine sat next to each other.
David whispered to Catherine, "That's the boss, Joe." Cool Cathrine whispers.
Mr. Dixon shakes hands with Mr. Lytell.
Steve says, "I work for Potillio and associate's insurance."
Mr. Dixon, "I work for United Airlines."
Smirking as Steve knew the real things going on at the MGA United Oakland Airline branch.
Mr. Dixon says, "United Airlines is eventually going to go to San Francisco, I think."
Steve ordered a pitcher of diet coke for everyone and a large Joes Special pizza. The two families learned more about each other. Sicilian music was playing in the background. They had a wonderful evening that lasted till 8pm.
This was the start of something wonderful.
