Here it is, the next chapter, loosely following the Journey to the Dawn segment of Octopath Traveler II itself. While I couldn't squeeze in the crossed paths segments, there will be a reference to at least one.

Rekindling Hope
The Endless Night had made it difficult to track the passage of time, but when Priscilla, Nathan, Sabrina, Scarlet, Alistair, Throne, and Temenos reconvened at the Tavern, they quickly set to work planning their next steps against the Moonshade Order and the encroaching darkness. The group gathered around a large table in the tavern, their maps of Solistia spread out before them. A week of careful preparation had passed, with the group traveling in smaller units to minimize the threat of shadow monsters that now roamed the land.
"As it stands," Sabrina began, taking the lead in the meeting, "Ku, Timberain, Sai, and what little remains of the military forces from the Sacred Guard and the Mei Clan are deadlocked by the shadow monsters. They're able to do little more than protect the people. But we won't be facing this nightmare alone. I've recruited what's left of Red's Mercenaries and mobilized my Arcane Brigade to bolster our strength in restoring the Sacred Flames and putting an end to the Moonshade Order."
"An army would certainly be a boon," Hikari agreed. "Agnea and I visited Ku recently and discovered the location of the region's Sacred Flame."
"Throne and I went to Flamechurch a few days ago," Temenos added. "We received fragments of an ancient mirror from a woman named Alpates. If my hunch is right, the cloudy mirror holds the power we need to restore the Sacred Flames and ward off the shadow monsters."
"Osvald and I visited an old friend of his for insights on the Endless Night," Partitio said with a slight grin. "We didn't get much new information, but it was worth the trip."
"And Ochette and I looked into things at Cropdale," Castii chimed in. "We didn't find much there either."
"But we know where the Sacred Flames are supposed to be," Alistair confirmed. "The closest one to Timberain is in the Hinouema region, all the way to the southwest."
"That's right. It's in the Tranquil Grotto," Hikari nodded thoughtfully. "Our next step should be to head there, then move on to the Fellsun Ruins."
Sabrina leaned forward, her brow furrowed. "Let's make our preparations and set off in a few hours. With the endless night upon us, keeping a steady sleep schedule is nearly impossible."
The group dispersed to prepare for their mission. Osvald remained in the tavern for a drink, accompanied by Castii and Agnea. He sighed deeply as he sipped his drink, already feeling the effects of the alcohol.
"Something on your mind?" Castii asked, her voice gentle.
Osvald barely glanced at her, clearly buzzed. "Ah... Forgive me. Didn't mean to get drunk on your birthday, Elena."
"Huh?" Castii blinked, confused for a moment. "Today's Elena's birthday, isn't it?"
Osvald's gaze grew distant. "I still remember the day she was born... Rita was so proud of her... I was too, of course. But it was the day we... We never knew it would be the last time we'd all be together like that."
Castii exchanged a glance with Agnea. "He's still struggling with Rita's loss."
Agnea nodded quietly. "We need to let him talk. It's how he processes things."
Osvald continued, his voice thick with emotion. "I promised Rita that I would keep Elena safe... but I couldn't... I couldn't protect her when she needed me the most. And now, even though Elena's safe, it doesn't feel right. I'm not whole without her mother by my side."
"You're doing the best you can, Osvald," Agnea said softly, offering him a gentle smile. "Elena is strong, just like you."
Osvald swayed slightly, his head growing heavier from the alcohol. With a sigh, Castii helped him to his bed, gently tucking him in as he drifted off to sleep, lost in thoughts of the past.
A few hours later, once Osvald had sobered up and everyone had finished their preparations, the group stocked up on supplies and set off through the forest toward the Hinouema region. As they neared the Tranquil Grotto, Glenn, Ash, the Arcane Brigade knights, and the remainder of Red's mercenaries arrived to greet them.
"Princess Sabrina," Glenn reported grimly. "While Red's mercenaries and the knights stationed at the fortress successfully dealt with Walden's assassins, we suffered heavy losses. We brought as many survivors as we could—over half a dozen mercenaries remain—but at least we have enough to bolster our forces."
Sabrina nodded thoughtfully. "Even if we lack overwhelming numbers, we still have enough to put up a fight against the Moonshade Order and the shadow monsters. May the fallen rest in peace."
"We heard you were heading this way," Ash added. "So, what's in these ruins?"
"One of the Sacred Flames," Hikari replied. "We'll investigate the ruins in a small group. I'll lead the way."
Agnea, Temenos, Priscilla, Nathan, and Osvald accompanied Hikari while the others remained outside the grotto to stand guard. The dim surroundings pressed in on them as they ventured deeper, their footsteps echoing against the cavern walls. Eventually, they came upon a torch—recently extinguished.
"Is this one of the Sacred Flames?" Nathan asked.
"Most likely. And look." Osvald gestured toward scattered pages littering the ground, their edges worn and ink smudged.
Priscilla and Temenos picked up the pages, scanning the contents. Priscilla's eyes widened as she read the name inscribed within. "Don't tell me… Ori wrote these?"
"The scrivener from the Clockbank Times?" Temenos mused, raising a brow. "Now, why would she be involved?"
Priscilla flipped through the pages. "It looks like she was documenting the Moonshade Order's activities."
Nathan let out a low whistle, smirking. "So there was more to this Ori chick than we thought. Guess she must've been pretty messed up in the head."
Just then, the cloudy mirror in Temenos's possession began to glow. He pulled it out, studying it with interest. "It appears to be resonating."
"The mirror?" Hikari asked, stepping closer.
Priscilla furrowed her brows in thought. "Hm… Osvald, Temenos, why don't we try relighting the torch?"
Osvald nodded. "We may just be able to."
With the combined power of the mirror, Osvald's magic, and Priscilla's Lumina abilities, they reignited the Sacred Flame. As the fire flickered back to life, an unexpected phenomenon took hold—a vision unfolded before their eyes.
'What is this?' Hikari thought, astonished as images took shape before them.
The scene depicted Kazan standing over a bound man—Ageha.
Kazan's voice echoed through the vision. "Your sacrifice will help purge the world of all its sorrows, Ageha."
Much to the group's horror, Kazan then smothered the flame with Ageha himself, snuffing out both the fire and the man's life.
"Kazan… why would you…?" Hikari whispered in shock.
The vision faded, leaving behind only lingering dread. As Kazan turned to walk away, his voice rang out once more:
"My name… is Oboro."
At that moment, another surge of visions struck Hikari. A sharp pain shot through his skull, and he groaned, clutching his head.
"Hikari?" Agnea asked, concern lacing her voice.
"I'm fine," he assured her, though his expression darkened. "It just… came to me. Not only am I King Jigo's youngest son, but I'm also a descendant of D'arqest, the Archmage. The Ku royal line was borne from his wicked legacy."
The revelation stunned the group into silence. After a moment, Agnea was the first to smile. "Well, it doesn't change anything for us."
"She's right. You're still you," Priscilla agreed.
Temenos chuckled. "Indeed. While it's ironic that you're descended from both the Flamebringer and the Archmage, it has nothing to do with you personally."
Hikari exhaled, gratitude washing over him. "Thank you."
Nathan, ever the opportunist, tilted his head. "Wait a minute—Throné's a descendant of D'arqest too, right? So does that make you and her cousins? And does that mean she's technically a princess?"
"Not entirely accurate," Temenos mused with a smirk, "but your logic is… amusing."
Priscilla, still piecing things together, frowned. "And now we know Kazan's true name—Oboro. But his motives don't make sense. Why would he destroy one of the Sacred Flames?"
Hikari's gaze hardened. "We'll find out soon enough."
With that, the group exited the Tranquil Grotto, the weight of their discoveries pressing heavily upon them. They traveled for what felt like hours more before finally arriving at the Fellsun Ruins in Crackridge. There, Temenos, Osvald, Priscilla, and Partitio ventured deeper into the ruins, their eyes scanning the surroundings for the next sacred flame. As they neared their destination, Osvald's sharp eyes caught sight of more of Ori's journal entries scattered on the ground.
"Why are her journal pages here, of all places?" Partitio asked, furrowing his brow. "Do you think she was following us?"
"Very likely." Priscilla nodded as she carefully picked up the pages, her fingers lingering over the worn parchment.
Temenos leaned in to read the notes alongside her. Both were taken aback by what they found.
"What do they say?" Partitio asked, sensing their surprise.
"The Moonshade Order was more involved in our troubles than I expected," Priscilla murmured, her tone grim. "They aided Kaldena's pathetic attempt at revenge by providing her with the Book of Night, the same book they helped Harvey recreate. Also, it seems someone named Claude was behind Trousseau's descent into madness. Castii, however, managed to resist his influence."
"Claude?" Partitio frowned, his mind racing. "That whackjob from Lostseed who Nathan, Throne, Scarlet, and I defeated? Hm, doesn't surprise me. And Ori... is she part of the Moonshade Order too?"
"It seems so." Priscilla nodded, her eyes narrowing as she read further. "According to the notes, Ori is actually Oboro's sister. And before she made the sacrifice to extinguish the sacred flame here, she regained some hope in humanity... thanks to your generosity, Partitio."
Partitio's expression shifted, conflicted emotions running through him. "So where is Ori now?" he asked quietly.
"Maybe she was rescued and taken back to Crackridge, if she survived." Osvald mused thoughtfully.
Temenos, Priscilla and Osvald rekindled the Sacred Flame before heading back outside to meet with the others. Sabrina was studying her map again, determining the most efficient route to reach the other two sacred flames. "Just two more to go, then?" Alistair asked.
"Yes. And that is not all." Priscilla reported what she had discovered in Ori's notes. Sabrina was not happy to hear about Ori's deception"If Ori is truly repentant for her part in bringing about Vide's reawakening, she will be watched when she recovers. And as for where we go next, we should head for Toto'haha."
"Master Juvah told me of the location of the Sacred Flame in the Tomb of the Wardenbeasts." Ochette said, thoughtfully"I will lead the way when we get there." The group headed all the way to port and sailed to Toto'haha.
When they reached Toto'haha, Ochette led the group through dense jungle until they arrived at the Tomb of the Wardenbeasts. The tomb was silent, eerily so, and an unnatural chill hung in the air. As the group moved deeper inside, a faint, foul scent began to permeate the atmosphere.
Ochette wrinkled her nose. "Something's not right."
"What's wrong?" Castii asked, her eyes darting around.
"I think we're not alone," Alistair murmured, his hand instinctively resting on his sword.
Then, from the shadows, a figure stirred. It was a grotesque silhouette—at first, it seemed to resemble a dragon, with long, sinewy limbs and towering wings. But any trace of majesty was swiftly overshadowed by its decayed, nightmarish form. Its body was a mishmash of broken bones and rotting flesh, scales cracked and blackened as if scorched by some internal fire. Its hollow eyes glinted with a malevolent gleam, and its very presence seemed to warp the air around it, suffocating and unnatural.
"I think I'm gonna be sick," Sabrina whispered, pale as she backed away from the creature.
"What in the world could have created something like this?" Priscilla muttered, her voice heavy with disgust.
Ochette drew her bow, readying an arrow. "Let's deal with it quickly. I don't want to stick around and smell that thing any longer."
The Grotesque Monster hissed, exhaling a toxic breath toward the group. Castii and Temenos quickly administered antidotes to their allies. Nathan lunged forward, slashing at the creature, but it nimbly dodged and retaliated with a blast of dark energy. Hikari and Partitio charged in, their weapons flashing in the dim light as they pushed the creature back. Osvald and Agnea responded with spells—thunderbolts and gusts of wind that buffeted the monster, though it barely flinched.
The beast let out an ear-piercing roar and retaliated with a devastating wave of oppressive shadow, sending the group reeling. Temenos moved quickly, casting healing spells to stabilize his companions, while Ochette loosed another arrow, striking the beast's hide. The creature recoiled but fought back with renewed fury, its dark powers overwhelming.
"Stay steady!" Temenos called as he healed the wounded. Osvald cast a series of fireballs, burning the creature's rotting flesh. Sabrina and Priscilla cast their own spells, weakening the beast further.
Finally, Alistair, Nathan, Ochette, and Partitio struck in unison, their weapons landing heavy blows as they executed an X Strike. Hikari followed through with a flurry of deadly sword strikes, and the creature crumpled to the ground with a final, sickening roar.
As it fell, Osvald quickly set its body aflame, ensuring the remnants were burned away, leaving only ash behind.
"That takes care of that," Partitio said, breathing heavily. "The thing nearly made me hurl."
Priscilla, Temenos, and Osvald approached the sacred flame, lighting it once more. As the fire flickered to life, another vision overtook them. The group watched in horror as it revealed the true origin of the Darkling—the monster had been created by Petrichor, tortured and manipulated before her own sacrifice to extinguish the sacred flame.
"Why did she do it?" Ochette asked, still trying to process the vision.
"I can only guess," Osvald replied, "but it seems Petrichor's role in this—whatever it was—was tied to the Moonshade Order's dark designs."
"Let's head for Flamechurch now," Temenos suggested, his voice resolute despite the unsettling revelations.
The group gathered their belongings and began the trek back, their determination unwavering despite the darkness ahead. The journey to Flamechurch was long and harrowing, broken up by rests and the frequent need to battle the monsters of the endless night.
"We'll camp just outside Flamechurch for now, until the final flame is lit," Sabrina decided.
Hikari nodded. "A sound decision."
After setting up camp, Hikari, Temenos, Throne, Priscilla, Nathan, Agnea, and Osvald made their way into the city, searching for the last extinguished flame. As they neared the church, a familiar figure awaited them — a green-haired cleric in blue robes, standing calmly in the moonlight.
"Sister Mindt?" Priscilla asked, brow furrowed. "What brings you out here?"
Mindt smiled wryly, but this time, her expression carried a twisted edge. "The real question is, what are you doing here, Prosecutor Whiteshore? You and Inquisitor Temenos have been quite busy. Everything went well with Lord Walden and the darkstone, I trust?"
"Yes. The Crimson Sun Syndicate has been disbanded. Walden's in custody, and the darkstone destroyed," Priscilla answered, wary.
"Good to hear. The Justice Minister of Timberain was always so… pompous. So obsessed with rooting out the Moonshade Order after handling the Blacksnakes and the Sacred Guard. My thanks, incidentally, for removing him from the picture."
Temenos's eyes narrowed. "There's a venom in your tone I didn't notice before... Mindt isn't who she claims to be. Everyone, be on guard."
"Well done, Inquisitor," Mindt said calmly. "I expect no less from you. But with the world nearing its end, I suppose I can dispense with the charade. I am Arcanette — leader of the Moonshade Order."
Priscilla recoiled. "What?"
"I knew something felt off," Nathan muttered. "A devout sister of the church handing over a darkstone to a high-ranking Timberain noble? Why would you do that? Did the Moonshade Order know about the Crimson Sun Syndicate?"
Arcanette laughed darkly. "Oh, so observant, Son of House Whiteshore. Yes — I was fully aware of Lord Walden's ambitions. Ori, our agent, kept us informed. Your interference removed a potential threat, though I suspect the darkstone would've consumed him in time."
Hikari stepped forward. "How deeply was the Order involved? Was Sylas corrupted by you as well?"
Arcanette shook her head, amused. "No. That jealous fool played no part in our plans. I was aware of Vanessa's Lumina connection — but I didn't need to intervene. Sylas's own insecurities and cruelty did the work for me. He severed the bond between you, Priscilla, and Nathan before your Lumina powers could awaken."
Nathan clenched his fists. "Are you done twisting the knife, Arcanette? For your information, Priscilla and I did awaken the one true magic — something even Professors Osvald and Harvey had only begun to understand."
Temenos stepped forward, voice hard. "Now I see. The Pontiff suspected you… and you had him murdered. Kaldena and Vados were just your pawns."
Arcanette chuckled. "Very good. Yes — he was close to exposing me. So I used Kaldena's grief and Vados's hatred to silence him. Poor hound — you lost your mentor, your friend. Flamechurch stands powerless now."
Temenos's expression darkened, uncharacteristically grim. "So it was you. You orchestrated the Pontiff's murder, Kaldena's rampage, the chaos in Flamechurch. By the sacred flames of Alferic… I will end you."
Priscilla stepped forward, eyes blazing. "You've insulted my family enough. Arcanette — you are under arrest!"
Arcanette laughed. "Prosecutor Whiteshore, surely you know justice means little now. The world teeters on the edge."
"This ends now," Throne hissed, drawing her dagger.
"For Ku, and all you've harmed," Hikari added, sword gleaming.
Nathan smirked grimly. "You really picked the wrong day to get on our bad side."
Arcanette raised the Darkblood Staff, summoning a blast of shadow that brought forth two Servants of the Night. Nathan and Hikari leapt to meet them in battle, blades flashing. Priscilla and Temenos unleashed holy magic, forcing Arcanette to dodge. She retaliated with Shooting Stars, dark energy raining from above, but Temenos countered with a protective ward.
Throne dashed in, her dagger slicing Arcanette's arm. The cult leader snarled and unleashed Moonshade, a wave of cursed darkness that Throne narrowly evaded. Agnea hurled a dagger, and Osvald followed with blazing fireballs — only for Arcanette to counter with her own devastating incantation: Deny the Dawn.
"She's powerful!" Osvald warned, shielding himself.
"We won't let her win!" Priscilla shouted.
Temenos kept the group steady with healing magic. Nathan seized the opening, slashing Arcanette's side. She staggered, then summoned more servants. Hikari, Priscilla, and Osvald stepped in to dispatch them while Throne darted forward once more. Arcanette tried to counter, but Temenos cast Luminous Wave, searing her in radiant light.
"Taunting us was your final mistake, Arcanette," Priscilla growled. "Solistia will see the dawn again."
"We'll see," Arcanette sneered, unleashing another wave of dark energy. But this time, Osvald and Priscilla struck back with overwhelming magic. The surge staggered her just long enough for Throne to deliver the final blow — her dagger cutting deep.
Arcanette gasped, her magic fading. "So… this is the end… Desperate, all of you, to see the dawn. I see now… the Pontiff was never the real threat… It was you… Temenos."
She turned her gaze to Throne, her expression twisted. "A dagger… honed to perfection. Claude's final masterpiece. Heh… I can see it — a collar around that thin neck… You'll never be free."
She began laughing — a hollow, bitter sound.
"Hehehe… Even in death, nothing ends… The night… is always near… Soon… it shall fall…"
With that, her body vanished into shadow.
Silence followed.
Temenos exhaled slowly. "Come. Let's light the final flame."
They entered the church and restored the last of the sacred flames. As it flickered to life, a final vision played — of Arcanette manipulating Tanzy, a member of Giselle's Troupe, only to sacrifice her without remorse.
"All four flames are now lit," Hikari said softly.
"And yet… when will we see the light of day again?" Priscilla murmured.
Temenos studied the flame's energy, reading the signs. "I believe we shall have our answer soon, my dear hawk."
He turned and stepped outside, the others following close behind. The wind whispered of forgotten lands.
"All signs point toward a long-lost landmass. That is where we will find Oboro… and the end of this darkness."
Nathan chuckled grimly. "Let me guess. Big bad god of destruction waiting for us?"
"Indeed," Temenos said with a nod.
And with that, they returned to camp — the dawn still distant, but their resolve stronger than ever.
This is it for this chapter, the final battle comes, next.
