Chapter 9: Learning the Art of Compliments
After leaving the equipment store, Rin led Naruto to a quieter restaurant, wanting to talk to him without distractions. They sat in a cozy corner booth, a warm meal in front of them. Naruto was happily stuffing his face, completely oblivious to the concerned look Rin was giving him.
"Naruto, we need to talk," Rin finally said, setting down her chopsticks.
Naruto looked up, mouth still half-full. "Mmh? About what?"
Rin sighed. "About what happened with Shizune earlier. You really don't understand why she ran off, do you?"
Naruto scratched his head. "I told her she looked pretty, and then she turned red and ran away. I don't get it. Was she mad?"
Rin shook her head. "No, she wasn't mad. She was embarrassed."
"Why would she be embarrassed?" Naruto asked, genuinely confused. "I meant what I said! I don't just say stuff to mess with people."
"I know you don't," Rin said with a small smile. "But Naruto, not every girl knows how to take a compliment, especially if it catches them off guard. Shizune gets flustered easily, so when you told her she was pretty, she didn't know how to react."
Naruto furrowed his brow. "So… should I not have said it?"
Rin laughed softly. "No, you can say it. It's just about knowing the right moment and understanding the person you're talking to. Every girl reacts differently."
Naruto frowned in thought. "So, if I were talking to, like, Ino, she wouldn't run away?"
Rin chuckled. "Oh no, Ino would love it. She'd probably ask for more."
Naruto blinked. "Okay, so… some girls like compliments, some get embarrassed, and some don't care. How am I supposed to keep track of all this?"
Rin rolled her eyes. "It's not that complicated. Just pay attention to how people react. If someone like Shizune turns bright red and panics, maybe don't ambush her with compliments. If it's someone like Ino, go ahead and tell her how amazing she looks."
Naruto nodded slowly. "Alright, I think I get it." Then he paused, looking at Rin curiously. "What about you?"
Rin blinked. "Huh?"
Naruto grinned. "What kind of girl are you? Should I be careful with compliments around you?"
Rin suddenly felt warm. She hadn't expected him to turn the question on her. She took a sip of her tea to buy time before answering. "I guess I'm somewhere in the middle," she admitted. "I like compliments, but if I really liked the person saying them, I might get a little shy."
Naruto tilted his head. "Like how Sakura acts around Sasuke?"
Rin scoffed. "Maybe, but way less annoying. If I liked someone, I wouldn't be chasing them around like a lost puppy."
Naruto laughed. "Yeah, that is pretty annoying." Then he smiled at her. "Well, I think you're really nice, Rin. I'm glad we're friends."
Rin felt a tiny flutter in her chest but quickly shook it off, returning his smile. "Thanks, Naruto. That kind of compliment is always welcome."
As they finished their meal, Naruto felt a little more confident in understanding girls—at least in theory. Rin, on the other hand, found herself wondering why Naruto's words lingered in her mind longer than they should have.
As Naruto wandered through the village, lost in thought about how to talk to Shizune without making her face turn as red as Sakura's hair, he barely noticed someone calling out to him.
"Oi, Naruto! What are you doing walking around looking like you just failed the Chunin Exams?"
Naruto snapped out of his thoughts and looked up to see Kiba and Akamaru approaching. Akamaru barked in greeting, tail wagging.
"Kiba! Akamaru! I'm just… thinking," Naruto said, rubbing the back of his head.
Kiba smirked. "That's dangerous. What's got you looking like you're about to punch a tree?"
Naruto sighed. "Weird stuff. Rin just gave me a whole talk about how I gotta learn to talk to girls properly. Apparently, I embarrassed Shizune earlier, and Rin said I need to be more careful with what I say."
Kiba raised an eyebrow. "You? Careful with words? Yeah, sure, that'll happen right after Kakashi shows up on time for once."
"Hey! I can be careful if I try!" Naruto huffed.
Kiba chuckled. "Right, right. So what exactly did you say to make Shizune lose it?"
Naruto crossed his arms. "I just told her she was pretty."
Kiba stopped in his tracks, then burst out laughing, almost doubling over. Akamaru barked excitedly, as if laughing too.
Naruto scowled. "What's so funny?!"
Kiba wiped at his eyes. "Oh, man, you're really hopeless, aren't you? You do realize what that means, right?"
Naruto frowned. "That I gave her a compliment?"
Kiba snorted. "No, you idiot! You just told a girl who probably already has a thing for you that she's pretty! Of course she freaked out!"
Naruto blinked. "What? No way! She just got embarrassed, that's all. Rin said some girls are just shy with compliments."
Kiba grinned. "Oh yeah, sure. That's why she ran off all red-faced, right? Totally normal reaction."
Naruto hesitated. "Well… yeah! Some people are just bad at taking compliments!"
Kiba shook his head. "Nah, man. She likes you. And judging by the way you're acting, I'd say you kinda like her too."
Naruto recoiled. "What?! No way! I would never give up on Sakura!"
Kiba raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh. And yet, here you are, walking around thinking about Shizune and how you made her feel. Sounds like you care a whole lot about what she thinks, huh?"
Naruto opened his mouth to argue but hesitated. Did he really care that much? He shook his head. "Shizune's just… I dunno, different. She's nice to me, she listens, and—"
"And she doesn't hit you," Kiba finished with a smirk.
Naruto huffed. "Yeah, that too!"
Kiba clapped a hand on his shoulder. "Face it, Naruto. You're used to girls treating you like dirt. So when one actually treats you like a person, it messes with your head. It's kinda sad, honestly."
Naruto frowned. "That's not true!"
Kiba just gave him a knowing look. "Isn't it, though? Sakura's been rejecting you for years, and now someone else is actually paying attention to you, and you don't know what to do with it. It's not just about Shizune being nice. You like her."
Naruto crossed his arms, looking conflicted. "I just think she has a certain… something. You know, like she's fancy or something."
Kiba tilted his head. "You mean elegant?"
Naruto's eyes lit up. "Yeah! That's the word! Shizune is elegant. She's really kind, and she listens to me. But she's just as pretty as Sakura!"
Kiba rolled his eyes. "Oh, man, you're a mess. So you've got a thing for both of them now? You should probably figure that out before you get yourself in trouble."
Naruto scowled. "I don't have a thing for Shizune! I just think she's—"
"Elegant, pretty, kind, listens to you, doesn't hit you, and actually pays attention to you," Kiba listed off, smirking. "Yeah, totally not a crush."
Naruto opened his mouth, then shut it. Kiba and Akamaru started walking away, Kiba still chuckling. "Good luck with that, man! Try not to make her pass out next time!"
Naruto stood there, arms crossed, his thoughts swirling. "Me? A crush on Shizune? No way… right?"
The scene shifts to the next morning as Team Tsunade gathers at the training grounds. While Naruto stretches with an eager grin, ready to push himself, Shizune arrives looking exhausted, dark circles under her eyes. She had barely slept, her mind replaying Tsunade's teasing over and over, making her question everything about her feelings toward her teammate.
Meanwhile, Naruto had woken up feeling perfectly fine—until the memory of his dream hit him like a kunai to the brain. Sakura and Shizune serving him ramen in skimpy outfits? What the hell was that about? He had barely been able to look at Shizune when they met up this morning, which only made her more confused about his behavior.
As the morning sun cast its light over the training grounds, Team Tsunade was now hard at work. Today's training was focused on pushing their limits—Naruto's stamina, as well as Rin and Shizune's chakra reserves for medical ninjutsu. Tsunade watched from the side with her usual critical eye, gauging their endurance and ability to function under pressure.
Naruto was deep in his own training, fighting against waves of his own shadow clones. Each punch, kick, and dodge was met with equal force, his movements sharp despite the relentless pace. Hours had passed, yet he barely showed signs of slowing down, his energy seemingly limitless.
A short distance away, Rin and Shizune were focused on their own grueling exercise. A small pool of water sat before them, filled with injured fish provided by Tsunade for their healing practice. The goal was to exhaust their chakra reserves as much as possible and then push beyond their limits, increasing their capacity over time.
Shizune exhaled heavily as she finished healing her most recent fish, wiping sweat from her forehead. "I swear, this is harder than any of the training I did before… everything changed."
Rin, panting lightly, nodded. "Tell me about it. It's frustrating knowing we used to be better at this." She glanced toward Naruto, who was still moving with incredible speed. "Meanwhile, he's been fighting nonstop, and he hasn't even slowed down."
Shizune followed her gaze, watching as Naruto sent a clone flying with a powerful kick, only for three more to charge at him from different angles. He ducked and countered, laughing as he fought them off.
"I don't get it," Shizune admitted. "How does he keep going like that?"
Rin shook her head. "Tsunade keeps saying he has an insane amount of chakra. Maybe it's just how he was born."
Shizune hummed in thought. "Even so, that kind of endurance is rare. Most people would be collapsing by now."
Rin smirked. "Maybe it's just part of his dumb luck. Either way, it's kind of impressive."
Shizune sighed, rolling her shoulders. "I guess… but that recklessness of his is going to get him hurt sooner or later."
And just as if the universe wanted to prove her point, Naruto's fatigue finally started catching up with him. His movements became a fraction slower, his focus slightly off. He didn't notice when a few stray shuriken thrown by his clones changed direction midair. Before he could react, they sliced across his arm, leaving deep, bleeding gashes.
Both Rin and Shizune snapped to attention.
Rin's eyes widened. "Tsunade-sama—"
Before she could finish, Shizune was already on the move. She sprinted across the training field and dropped to her knees beside Naruto, grabbing his injured arm.
"You idiot!" she scolded. "Pay attention to what's happening around you!"
Naruto winced but grinned sheepishly. "I'm fine, really—"
"Shut up and stay still," she snapped, pressing glowing green hands over his wounds. The cuts were deep, but nothing she couldn't handle.
Rin jogged over and knelt down, observing as Shizune worked. "Sheesh, Shizune, it's not like he's dying."
Shizune ignored her, focused entirely on sealing Naruto's wounds. She poured her chakra into the injuries, the glow of her jutsu pulsing steadily.
But then, her vision blurred.
A wave of dizziness crashed over her, her fingers growing numb. She had already used so much chakra earlier—pushing herself further now was too much.
Her hands trembled.
"Shizune?" Naruto asked, noticing the strain on her face.
Before she could respond, her body wavered—then suddenly collapsed forward.
Naruto barely caught her, his now-healed arm instinctively wrapping around her shoulders to keep her from hitting the ground.
"Shizune!" Rin quickly checked her pulse. "She's completely out of chakra."
Tsunade sighed as she finally approached. "I was waiting to see how far she'd push herself. Turns out, way too far." She crouched next to Shizune, placing two fingers against her forehead. A faint glow of chakra passed between them, stabilizing her condition. "She just needs rest. She'll wake up in a few hours."
Naruto, still holding Shizune, looked down at her sleeping face, frowning slightly. "She really didn't have to push herself so hard…"
Tsunade smirked. "That's what medics do. They always care too much." She stood up and stretched. "Training's over for today. Naruto, carry Shizune back to the hotel."
Naruto blinked. "Huh? Why me?"
"She can't walk," Tsunade pointed out. "And I doubt you want me carrying her."
Rin crossed her arms, grinning. "Come on, Naruto. You don't want to let her down after she nearly drained herself healing you, right?"
Naruto groaned, his face turning red. "That's not—ugh, fine."
He carefully lifted Shizune onto his back, adjusting his grip so she was secure. She instinctively nestled closer in her sleep, making Naruto freeze for a second before sighing.
As they walked back, Rin walked beside him with a thoughtful look. "You know… you might not realize it yet, but you're important to her."
Naruto glanced at her. "Well, yeah. We're teammates."
Rin chuckled. "Yeah… teammates." She gave him a knowing look before jogging ahead, leaving Naruto confused as he carried Shizune back to the hotel.
As Naruto carefully carried Shizune through the quiet halls of the hotel, Rin and Tsunade trailed behind him, watching with amused expressions. The two older kunoichi had trusted him to handle the situation, but that didn't mean they would pass up an opportunity to tease him.
Rin nudged Tsunade with a smirk. "You sure about this, Lady Tsunade? Leaving our poor, innocent teammate alone with Naruto?"
Naruto nearly stumbled mid-step. "O-Oi! What's that supposed to mean?!"
Tsunade crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. "Well, you are carrying an exhausted and defenseless girl into a private room, Naruto. Wouldn't want anyone to get the wrong idea…"
Rin gasped dramatically, placing a hand on her chest. "Oh no, what if she wakes up and thinks you took advantage of the situation? Poor, poor Shizune…"
Naruto's face turned as red as a tomato. "Wha—!? I wouldn't—! Why would you even—?!"
Tsunade and Rin exchanged glances before bursting into laughter.
"Relax, brat. We know you're not that type," Tsunade said, grinning as she waved him off. "Still, I wouldn't be surprised if she reacts badly in the morning. You are a bit of a magnet for getting hit by women."
Rin nodded sagely. "That's true. He's basically a walking punch target."
Naruto groaned in exasperation, adjusting Shizune's weight in his arms. "I swear I'm just putting her in bed and leaving. That's it!"
Rin smirked. "Mhm. Just make sure she doesn't pull you into anything unexpected."
Before he could yell at them again, Naruto quickly turned away and opened the door, stepping inside and shutting it behind him.
As soon as the door clicked shut, he let out a sigh, mumbling, "Those two are so annoying…"
Carefully, he moved toward the bed, adjusting his hold on Shizune before gently lowering her onto the mattress. "Alright, all done. Now I can—"
Just as he was about to straighten up, Shizune suddenly shifted.
Her arms shot up and latched onto him.
"Huh—?!" Naruto barely had time to react before she yanked him down with surprising strength. He toppled over onto the bed, landing face-first against her chest.
"Mmm… my blonde teddy bear…" Shizune mumbled sleepily, her grip tightening.
Naruto went completely rigid. His face was right there.
His brain immediately shut down. Teddy bear?!
He tried to move—tried to pry her off—but Shizune only snuggled in closer, her arms locked around his back. Then—just to make things worse—her legs wrapped around his waist, effectively trapping him against her.
Naruto's face felt like it was on fire.
"O-Oi, Shizune—wake up! Let go!" he whisper-yelled, trying not to wake the whole building.
Shizune just let out a happy sigh, nuzzling closer. "So warm…"
Naruto gulped, frozen in place. What do I do? If I try to force my way out and wake her up like this, she'll kill me. But if I stay here…
Outside the door, he suddenly heard snickering.
"Oh, I told you something like this would happen," Rin giggled.
Tsunade hummed in amusement. "Should we go in and save him?"
"Nah, let's give it a few minutes."
Naruto clenched his teeth. They planned this!
Still stuck in Shizune's iron grip, Naruto let out a long, suffering sigh. After struggling for a few more moments with no success, exhaustion from training finally caught up to him.
"…Fine," he muttered, shifting slightly to get comfortable. "But if I get punched in the morning, I'm blaming you two."
As if on cue, Rin and Tsunade burst into full-blown laughter outside.
Naruto groaned. "This is the worst… or maybe not the worst…?"
As the warmth of Shizune's embrace and the soft sound of her breathing lulled him into drowsiness, Naruto felt his blush start to fade.
Maybe… just for a little while, this wasn't so bad.
With that thought, he finally drifted off to sleep.
Midnight Whispers and Broken Bets
Shizune stirred, a soft breath escaping her lips as consciousness crept back in. She felt… warm. Unusually so. Wrapped in a comfortable heat, her body relaxed instinctively, savoring the sensation—until her mind fully woke up.
Her fingers twitched as she realized something firm and solid was nestled against her chest. A slow blink. Then another. As her eyes adjusted to the dim glow from the moon outside, she finally looked down.
Blonde.
Her mind screeched to a halt.
Golden tufts of messy hair rested against her, rising and falling with each slow breath. The warm weight pressed against her wasn't just the blanket—it was a person.
Naruto.
A strangled noise caught in her throat. Why is Naruto in my bed?!
She stiffened, her body frozen as memories from earlier rushed back. She had fainted after overusing her chakra—Naruto had carried her. Had she… pulled him in while sleeping?
Before her thoughts could spiral, a low mumble broke the silence.
"D'nt… wanna be a teddy bear…"
Shizune barely had time to process that before Naruto groaned, shifting slightly. His arms flexed around her waist, pulling himself closer as he pressed his face against her chest.
Her entire body locked up. Oh no… oh no oh no oh no.
"…But cuddl'n's nice…"
A quiet whimper escaped her lips. Why does he have to be so cute?!
Shizune's heart pounded so hard she was convinced Naruto would wake up just from the sound of it. She knew she should move, gently push him away before he woke up and things got awkward.
But… she didn't.
Instead, she hesitated.
Naruto was warm. Comforting. Safe.
The way he held onto her, even unconsciously—it sent a shiver down her spine. He likes this, she realized. And—so do I.
Heat burned in her cheeks as she bit her lip, her fingers twitching against the back of his shirt. I have a crush.
There was no denying it now.
A deep breath. Then, carefully—so carefully—she shifted just enough to pull Naruto even closer. His breath tickled her collarbone as he sighed in contentment.
"Just for tonight…" she whispered, smiling softly.
Then, she let herself fall back asleep.
—
Meanwhile, Outside the Hotel Room…
Tsunade crossed her arms, her lips pulled into a deep frown as she shoved a thick stack of ryo into Kakashi's waiting hand.
He hummed in satisfaction, slipping the money into his vest. "Tough loss, huh?"
Tsunade scowled. "Don't be smug, Hatake. I swore Rin would make the first move before Shizune."
Kakashi chuckled, shaking his head. "Rin? No chance. She's always been too patient. She didn't act on her feelings back then, and she's not about to start now. She'll wait for Naruto to figure things out on his own."
Tsunade groaned. "That dense brat is gonna take years to figure anything out."
"Exactly," Kakashi said, gesturing toward the window. "Which is why I put my money on Shizune. She's had a crush on kind, heroic blondes before. It makes sense she'd fall for this one, too."
Tsunade huffed, crossing her arms. "I still can't believe I lost. I should've rigged the bet somehow…"
Kakashi's visible eye crinkled in amusement. "If it makes you feel better, you can win the next one."
Tsunade raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What's the bet this time?"
Kakashi's expression turned sly. "How long before Naruto realizes he has feelings for her too?"
Tsunade groaned louder. "Ugh, no thanks. I'll be waiting until I'm old and gray."
Kakashi let out a low chuckle. "Fair point."
Tsunade exhaled sharply, placing a hand on her hip. "You're an annoying little bastard, you know that?"
"I do," he replied smoothly. "But I'm also a generous winner."
She quirked a brow.
"I found a decent bar nearby," he said, sliding his hands into his pockets. "And I hate drinking alone—especially when Guy invites himself along. Care to join me?"
Tsunade blinked. Did Kakashi Hatake just ask her out for a drink?
She opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, he gave her a familiar eye-smile—then disappeared in a swirl of leaves.
Tsunade scoffed, shaking her head with an amused smirk.
"That sneaky brat…" she muttered.
Still, as she turned toward the village, she found herself walking toward that bar anyway.
