Sofia the First
Chapter I: Once upon a time...
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a young girl named Sofia. She lived in the countryside with her mother, Miranda, in a village near the capital castle. Miranda, a shoemaker, wasn't earning much from her work, but the two led a simple and happy life. Although Miranda couldn't afford to give Sofia a luxurious life, she provided her with something far greater—the unconditional love of a true mother.
However, one day, everything changed. For Miranda and Sofia, it seemed like just another ordinary day, but little did they know their lives were about to transform. A soldier from the royal castle entered their shop and requested that Miranda make a pair of shoes for the royal family. Miranda eagerly accepted, hoping to impress the king and perhaps become the royal shoemaker. She dreamed of this chance to offer Sofia a better life.
"We're going to meet the royal family," echoed the thought in Sofia's mind.
The royal family—composed of King Roland II and his two children, James and Amber—ruled the kingdom. It was a great honor to meet them, and Miranda knew she couldn't miss such an opportunity. The following day, Sofia and her mother journeyed to the castle to meet the royal family.
When they arrived, Sofia was awestruck by the castle's grandeur. She took in every detail, imagining how she would share the tale with her friends back in the village. The two were escorted by guards to the royal throne room, where King Roland sat. Miranda approached the king, bowed deeply, and presented the shoes she had crafted. As King Roland reached for the shoes, his hand accidentally brushed Miranda's, sparking a connection that marked the beginning of their love story—and a new chapter for Miranda and Sofia.
At the age of 8, Sofia became a princess. Meeting her new family was thrilling, but deep inside, she doubted her readiness for royal life. Yet, over time, Sofia honed her skills, becoming one of the most admired princesses at the royal school. She never gave up on growing into the person her new title demanded.
But destiny had far greater plans for Sofia. Her path and purpose extended beyond simply being a princess. Eight years after moving to the castle, Sofia had embraced her role fully, mastering everything a princess should know. Yet, deep in her heart, she remained the same kind, authentic girl who had first stepped into the castle.
James and Amber played a key role in helping Sofia adjust. Amber, the traditional princess, followed every rule meticulously and always aimed to excel. James, on the other hand, was more like Sofia—genuine yet effortlessly perfect. Together, they guided her through her remarkable journey.
Sofia was now 16 years old, and James was 17. Yet, deep within their hearts, they knew that something wasn't right, as their feelings for each other had grown into something much more profound than the bond of simple siblings.
James
I can't stop thinking about Sofia or what I feel for her. Every day, my feelings grow stronger. I have to confess them to her, but I don't know how. I can't keep them bottled up any longer, because if I don't try, I might lose her to another prince—and I can't even bear the thought. I can't imagine seeing Sofia in someone else's arms. I must face my greatest fear: the possibility that she might not feel the same. But even so, I need to muster the courage to try. And I think I know how to tell her. I'll confess my feelings at the Thursday ball. I'll invite her to a romantic dance and see how she reacts. Afterward, I'll take her for a walk in the garden and tell her everything...
Meanwhile, on the other side of the castle, Sofia was having a conversation with her pet rabbit, Clover.
"The ball is in three days, Princess. Have you decided what you're going to wear?" Clover asked while munching on a carrot.
"I haven't chosen one yet," Sofia replied as she sat on the chair near the window. "I was thinking of wearing my usual dress."
"Come on, Princess, this isn't just any party. It's a grand ball hosted by your family," Clover said as he hopped closer. "You need to impress everyone—including him."
"Him?" Sofia looked at Clover. "If you're referring to James, you're deluding yourself." She rose and walked toward the desk, where her books were neatly arranged. "I'm trying to move forward and erase every feeling for him from my heart."
"Why would you do that, Princess?" Clover followed her. "You don't know what he feels. And as I always tell you, the way he looks at you, the way he acts around you—it all seems to confirm my suspicions."
"Clover, he's my brother." Sofia stood still, facing her furry friend. "Even if we share the same feelings, no one would accept it. Nothing can come of this because everything is against 'us.'"
"That's not the way you should see it. He's your stepbrother, so you're not blood-related. And besides, if you share these feelings, you should fight for them—not run away."
Sofia was stunned by Clover's words. She picked him up and carried him to the window, gazing at the beautiful lake surrounding the castle.
"You're right, Clover. I must face my feelings—not run from them. After all, he is special to me. He's always taken care of me. He's the one who supported me when I needed it most. And he always makes me feel like I am more than what others see. I'll find out the truth at the ball. If he shows interest in other girls, then it's clear. If not, I'll talk to him and face whatever comes, even if it risks us not being the same. Anyway, I was thinking of going to the village. I need some fresh air."
"Good idea. I was planning a short trip to the kitchen anyway," Clover answered, jumping out of Sofia's arms. "See you later, Princess."
Sofia headed to the stables and prepared to leave. But at the last moment, she saw James approaching her.
"Where are you going, Sof?" he asked.
"I want to visit Ruby, Jade, and Lucinda in the village. I was thinking of having a picnic with them," she answered, showing him the bag. "Do you want to join us?"
"It would be my honor, my princess," James replied, laughing.
"You and your jokes."
As the carriage departed, the two enjoyed the ride, talking about the ball that was coming up in just a few days.
"So, are you excited about the ball?" James asked.
"I admit I'm a bit nervous about it," Sofia replied.
"Why are you?" James continued. "It's just a ball, after all."
"It's not much anyway. I heard some rumors at school about me not being a 'born princess'—the same stuff as always," Sofia responded. "I'm nervous because I don't want to mess it up."
"You don't need to worry, Sof," James said, taking her hand. "You're special, even if you're not a 'born princess,' and the people saying that are just trying to intimidate you. Maybe that's exactly what they want. But no matter what, I'll be there for you, even if you mess it all up. To me, you are a true princess."
"Thank you, James!" Sofia kissed him on the cheek and hugged him. "You always make me feel better. I'm so lucky to have you."
"And I'm lucky to have you, too," James thought.
The carriage continued its journey to the village. When they arrived, Sofia and James found their friends Ruby, Jade, and Lucinda. They gathered in the central square and headed toward the hills near the village—a place Sofia loved to visit with them when they were younger. Suddenly, Sofia remembered she needed to pick up some items from her old house, which wasn't far away.
"Guys, I need to grab some stuff from my old house. Do you mind if I go now?" she asked, searching for the key in her bag.
"No problem. Can we come with you?" Ruby asked.
"Sure, why not? But who will stay behind with our things?" Sofia replied.
"I'll stay here and keep James company. I'm sure he needs it," Lucinda joked.
"Are you sure you don't need any help, Sof?" James asked.
"It's okay, James. I'll be back quickly. Ready, girls?" Sofia stood up.
"Ready!" Jade and Ruby answered, and the three headed toward the house.
James watched Sofia walking ahead, thinking about how much he loved her and how deeply he needed her. Every moment without her felt like a nightmare—one he desperately wanted to escape.
"My God, I love her so much. Why didn't I go with her?" James thought to himself.
"James, I'm talking to you," Lucinda called out, shaking him.
"Hmm, what?" he asked.
"You didn't answer my question," Lucinda said. "What were you thinking about...other than Sofia?"
"What do you mean?" James tried to deflect.
"Don't play dumb with me. You think I'm that blind? It's obvious what's going on here. You like her," Lucinda teased, lightly punching his shoulder.
"I really don't know what you're talking about," James said, trying to change the subject.
"Look, Sofia is probably my best friend, and I care about her a lot. It's not like I'm going to run to her and shout, 'James likes you!' But it's obvious—you look at her in a very special way, you care deeply for her, and you're incredibly kind to her. Honestly, if you ask me, you two make a great match. I know you'd take care of her," Lucinda explained, placing her hand on his. "If there's anything I can do, just tell me."
"Okay, you're right about everything. I really love Sofia, more than a sister or even a stepsister. I love her with all my heart, and I want to tell her. But I'm..."
"Afraid of losing her if she rejects you?" Lucinda finished his sentence.
"Yes. I know there are two possibilities. If she likes me too, everything will be perfect, just as I imagine. But if she doesn't...everything will change, and she'll push me away," James admitted.
"Well, I could try to figure out how she feels about you," Lucinda said as she poured tea for herself and James.
"No, if you do that, it'll seem suspicious since we just talked about it. I do have a plan. I'll confess my feelings to her at the ball. That way, I'll know for sure whether she likes me or not," James continued.
"A good plan. But what if you're wrong? Will you still tell her?"
"Then I'll accept my fate and move on, even if it feels impossible for me," James replied, looking in the direction Sofia had left. "They're coming back now. We'll continue this conversation later."
"Okay. Just remember, if you need my help, I'm here," Lucinda assured him.
"Help him with what?" Sofia interrupted, looking at them with curiosity.
"He asked me to look through my magical books for a spell," Lucinda quickly answered, giving James a reassuring sign that she had it under control. "You came back pretty fast."
"It wasn't a long walk, and we didn't have much to carry back to the carriage," Sofia replied as she sat down near them.
Time passed, and while James played football with Ruby, Jade, and some village kids, Sofia found herself alone with Lucinda. She felt the urge to confide in her friend about James and seek advice.
"Lucinda, can I trust you with something?" Sofia asked.
"Of course. What's on your mind?"
"Well, it's about something I've been feeling lately... I know it might sound strange, but I think I have a crush... on James," Sofia admitted. Lucinda reacted with surprise, accidentally spilling tea from her cup.
"I can be so clumsy sometimes. Sorry! But you really surprised me. Are you saying you like James?" Lucinda asked, quickly recovering from the mishap.
"Yes, I've been feeling this way recently, and I don't know what to do," Sofia confessed.
"You should tell him," Lucinda advised, taking a muffin from the table.
"How could I do that? What if he thinks I'm crazy?"
"Are you afraid of what James might think about you liking him, or of what he might do if he doesn't feel the same?" Lucinda asked.
"Both," Sofia replied, glancing over at James. "I'm afraid of losing him, even as my brother. This way, I can still dream about him and have him in my life, even if not completely."
"Yes, but you'll never know the truth. And maybe someday you'll realize he liked you, but it'll be too late to do anything about it," Lucinda pointed out.
"I know. And the scariest part is that I can't find the courage to risk everything," Sofia admitted, looking down at her hands. "I feel like I'll just look foolish if I confess to him."
"Do you have a plan?" Lucinda asked.
"I do. I'll observe how he acts at the ball. If he shows interest in other girls, then it's clear to me," Sofia explained.
"And if he doesn't?"
"If he doesn't, I'll confront him and tell him everything," Sofia responded, stealing another glance at James. "If only I had a small clue..."
"You'll find out, and everything will be okay," Lucinda reassured her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Now let's change the subject, or they might overhear us."
"Agreed. Let's join them," Sofia said as she stood and walked toward James and the others. But as she and Lucinda approached, a child kicked the ball into Sofia's leg, causing her to fall hard. Seeing this, James rushed toward her, alarmed.
"Sofia, are you all right?" he asked, taking her in his arms.
"I'm okay, but my leg hurts," she replied.
"We need to take you to the castle and let a doctor examine you," James said, lifting her into his arms. "We have to go. We'll see you later, everyone."
James carried Sofia back to the carriage and headed to the castle quickly. He held her tightly and kept reassuring her that everything would be fine. When they arrived, they were greeted by their parents.
"Sofia, James, what happened?" Roland asked as he approached them alongside Miranda.
"Sofia fell after being hit by a ball," James explained as they entered Sofia's room. "I think you should call a doctor to check her leg."
"I'll meet you in her room," Roland said, leaving to fetch the doctor.
"This is unfortunate," Miranda said as James gently placed Sofia on her bed. "We were supposed to attend a council meeting for two days before the ball, but if your leg is injured, you two will have to stay behind."
"It's not that bad," Sofia said. "It probably hurts because of the fall."
"Regardless, it's best if you two stay behind. Someone needs to look after the castle," Miranda continued. "Baileywick and some staff will accompany us, while the others have been sent home. Only the guards will remain to protect the castle."
"I'll take care of her," James assured them.
"I know you will," Miranda said. "You've always looked after her whenever she needed help."
The doctor arrived and examined Sofia, recommending rest to heal her leg quickly.
"Looks like you two are staying behind," Roland explained. "Amber is at Hildegard's for two days, and I've instructed some staff to return tomorrow morning."
"I'll leave a note with instructions for Sofia's care. I'm counting on you, James," Miranda added.
"Of course. I can handle this easily," James replied.
"Take care of yourselves," Roland said as everyone exchanged goodbye hugs.
After their parents departed, James went to the kitchen to prepare a meal for Sofia.
James
What a great opportunity to show my feelings for you, Sofia. It's like destiny is on my side. Look at what I'm doing for her—I'm even cooking! Me... cooking! Sometimes I surprise myself, and I know she'll be proud to see how much I care for her. After all, I owe her this—she's always been there for me. She's my support, my adventurer, my leader, my soulmate, my princess.
This might be the beginning...
Greetings, everyone!
After 11 long years since I first began writing this, and 5 years since you last heard from me, I've returned to rework and refine everything I've written. I know it has been a long time, but life comes with its challenges. I'm now building my teaching career and aspiring to become the principal of my school, so my time has always been limited.
However, I've found support and people willing to help me conclude this story. My goal is to finish it in a maximum of 35 chapters. So, stay tuned, and I hope you all enjoy reading this as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
Sending my best regards to you all! 😊
