Sofia the First
Sofia and James More than meets the eye
Chapter 3 The Revelation
As the sun gently rose over the kingdom of Enchancia, its golden rays spilled into Sofia's room, where she and James lay asleep together. For James, the moment was nothing short of a dream come true. Sofia's fear of thunderstorms had gifted him this rare opportunity to stay close to the person he loved deeply—to hold her, feel her warmth, and savor every second by her side.
"Sof... my beautiful Sof," James whispered softly, his gaze lingering on her tranquil face. "Finally, I get to hold you, to breathe you in, to have you near me. God, I love you so much. But I'm not ready to tell you yet. Last night, I dreamt that you felt the same way. I want you, Sof. It eats at me even when I see you talking to another prince. But I have to wait—wait until the ball. Only then will the timing be perfect."
James closed his eyes again, wishing this moment could last forever. All he wanted was to get lost in Sofia's presence, to hold her close and never let go. But as he was too sleepy, he went back sleeping.
Eventually, Sofia stirred awake.
"James, wake up," she said gently, shaking him. But James remained deeply asleep, oblivious to her voice.
Quietly, Sofia rose from the bed, wincing slightly from the ache in her leg, and headed downstairs to prepare breakfast. As she moved about the kitchen, her mind replayed the events of the previous night.
Sofia's thoughts:
What a night—unlike anything I've ever experienced. Now I know for certain that I love him. I feel it in every fiber of my being. Being close to him, hearing his heartbeat, feeling his skin and the safety of his embrace—it was magical. I'm convinced he feels the same way. He has to. I can't imagine my life without James. I almost lost him once, and I swear I'll never let that happen again. I should hurry back upstairs—he might wake up soon and worry about me. Breakfast is ready, and I know he'll be happy when he sees it...
Sofia returned to the room, carrying the breakfast tray, and tried again to wake him.
"Jamie, come on, wake up," she said playfully.
"Please, Sof, just five more minutes," James mumbled sleepily, pulling the blanket over his head.
"James, it's 9 a.m.! Or do I need to pour water on you to wake you up?" Sofia teased, her tone mischievous.
"Really, Sof? It's not like we've got anything urgent to do," James replied, barely stirring.
"Come on, I made breakfast," Sofia said, nudging him.
"You shouldn't push yourself too hard. I don't want you getting hurt," James said, sitting up slightly.
"I knew you'd worry, but you don't have to. My leg is fine now—I don't feel any pain," Sofia reassured him.
"I hope so. After all, the ball is in two days, and I'd hate to see you stuck in bed for it," James replied softly.
"Don't worry, James. You're not getting rid of me that easily," Sofia said with a smirk.
"So, we've got just one more night before everyone returns," James remarked, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.
"Indeed. Time really flies," Sofia agreed.
As their day unfolded, they decided to take a walk around the castle grounds. Together, they visited the troll cave, strolled through the royal gardens, and wandered into Sofia's secret hideaway. Their laughter filled the air as they explored and reminisced.
Finally, they found themselves seated on the soft grass near the lake, watching the water's gentle ripples.
"You know, James, I believe I won our game again," Sofia teased, breaking the silence.
"Oh, sure. We reached a stalemate, remember?" James countered with a grin.
"I know—I was just teasing," Sofia said, her playful smile lighting up her face.
"Well, maybe you could cool off with a quick dip in the lake," James said mischievously, scooping her up in his arms.
"James, put me down! I was only joking! Please!" Sofia cried, struggling lightly.
"Say you're sorry, and I'll let you go," James bargained, his laughter bubbling up.
"Fine! I'm sorry, really," Sofia said, giggling.
"Alright, here you go. And I'm sorry too—I probably shouldn't have done that," James said gently, setting her back on the ground.
"It's alright, James. It was funny, and honestly, I always feel great when I'm with you. You're the best brother and friend I could ever have," Sofia said sincerely.
"You always know just what to say, Sof. And of course, I feel the same. Spending time with you is always the best," James replied warmly.
"I know you too well, James," Sofia said with a playful glint in her eyes, her voice carrying the warmth of familiarity.
"Sure you do," James replied, though inwardly his heart whispered a secret she couldn't yet hear. If only you truly knew what I feel for you, Sofia. How much you mean to me... how much I wish I could tell you.
After a pause, James broke the silence, his tone casual but tinged with purpose. "Oh, Sof, I almost forgot. I need to go to the village to pick up everything Mom asked for."
"Really? Since when are you the one doing the shopping?" Sofia teased, her voice light but brimming with amusement. "You're starting to impress me."
"I'm glad to hear that. It's no easy task to impress a princess like you," James replied with a smirk. "But you know I can't take you with me."
Sofia's expression softened, her eyes narrowing knowingly. "I thought you might say that."
"Oh, come on, Sof," James said, reaching for her hand and holding it gently. "I'll only be gone for an hour or two. You won't even notice I'm gone."
"Of course. But what am I supposed to do in the meantime? I'll be all alone in this big, empty castle," Sofia said, her voice laced with mock drama.
James chuckled, squeezing her hand reassuringly. "You won't be alone, Sof. You've got your animal friends to keep you company."
Sofia rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the smile tugging at her lips. "You really know how to leave a girl hanging, Jamie."
"Only temporarily," James said with a grin, his thumb brushing over her hand before he reluctantly let go.
"Indeed, I almost forgot about Clover, Mia, and Robin," Sofia said, smiling warmly.
"You even named them?" James asked, raising a curious eyebrow.
"James, I didn't name them," Sofia replied, her tone holding a hint of mystery.
"Then who did? Animals don't talk, Sof," James said, leaning forward slightly, intrigued.
Sofia hesitated for a moment, then spoke softly. "James, I trust you enough to share the secret of my amulet."
"What secret?" James asked, his curiosity piqued.
"The Amulet of Avalor is no ordinary object. It's incredibly powerful. For every good deed, it grants a special power, but for every bad deed, it delivers a curse," Sofia explained carefully.
James's eyes widened. "Are you saying the amulet gave you the power to talk to animals?"
"Yes, James. But please, you must promise not to tell anyone about this," Sofia said, her gaze meeting his, pleading for his discretion.
James nodded with a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, Sofia. Your secret is safe with me."
"Thank you, James. You're such a sweetheart," Sofia said, leaning in to kiss his cheek gently.
James chuckled, his cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. "Alright, I need to head to the village now, but I'll be back soon."
"Okay, but come back quickly—and stay safe," Sofia said, watching him leave with a mix of affection and concern.
Sofia's Thoughts:
I feel certain now—he likes me too. But I still need to be sure. Perhaps Clover and the others can help me.
Sofia called out as she entered the garden. "Clover, where are you?"
"We're here, Sofia," Clover replied, hopping into view with Mia and Robin close behind.
"What happened?" Mia asked, fluttering gently.
"Guys, do you remember what I told you about James? I truly believe he likes me," Sofia said, her voice soft but filled with hope.
"What makes you think that?" Robin asked, tilting his head inquisitively.
"Well, last night, when we were alone, I realized how much he cares for me. We slept in the same bed, and he held me so close, wrapped in his arms. It was incredible. I've never felt anything like it," Sofia admitted, her cheeks flushing slightly.
"And did you confess your feelings to him?" Clover asked, his ears twitching eagerly.
"No, I didn't. I couldn't find the courage to tell him," Sofia confessed with a sigh.
"Why not, Sofia? The timing seemed perfect!" Robin exclaimed.
Sofia sighed again and explained, "I thought the ball would be the perfect moment."
"Sofia, everyone will be at the ball," Mia pointed out.
"Yes, I know. But the plan is to discover how he feels by looking into his eyes while we dance," Sofia said, her voice laced with determination.
"Sofia, only you can decide when the timing is right. Trust your instincts," Mia said kindly.
"Thank you, Mia," Sofia said, a faint smile returning to her lips.
Robin chimed in, "But have you thought about what happens afterward? What if your parents don't approve?"
Sofia's expression faltered for a moment as she replied, "If he feels the same way, we'll let destiny decide our future."
"Destiny?" Clover asked skeptically. "You'd leave it all to fate?"
"What else can I do? If it comes to that, we'll fight for our love. But first, I need to know if he truly feels the same way," Sofia said resolutely.
Robin leaned closer. "We could eavesdrop on James and learn more for you."
"That way, you can prepare a romantic evening for him before the ball. It's the perfect time, especially since you don't know how your parents might react to a relationship between a stepsister and stepbrother," Clover added.
Sofia considered this for a moment before agreeing. "Alright, do it. Let me know what you find out."
"We'll uncover the truth, Sofia. Don't worry," the animals promised as they scurried off.
James felt a pang in his chest as he thought about Sofia while walking through the village.
James Thoughts:
She seemed so sad when I left, he thought. And last night, I dreamed she said, 'I love you.' Maybe she does feel the same way. But how do I find out before the ball? I'll ask Lucinda for help—she always has ideas.
Spotting her nearby, James called out. "Lucinda! Where are you off to?"
"Oh, hi, James. I didn't see you there. Just out for a walk. How's Sofia?" Lucinda asked.
"She's fine, back at the castle. I needed to buy some things, but I also need your help. Do you have a spell to show me what happened last night?" James asked eagerly.
Lucinda raised an eyebrow. "I do. But why would you need it?"
James hesitated before answering, "Last night was the most important night of my life. I spent the night with Sofia."
Lucinda's face lit up. "Finally! I'm so happy you confessed your feelings!" she cheered.
James shook his head quickly. "No, it's not what you think. We didn't confess anything. I stayed in her room, but… it wasn't like that," he clarified.
Lucinda sighed. "Oh, just as I was getting excited. But why the spell?"
James replied, "I remember her grabbing my hand and whispering, 'James, I love you.' But I can't be sure it was real."
Lucinda paused before agreeing. "Alright, I'll cast it for you."
As the spell revealed the truth, James gasped, overwhelmed by emotion. She loves me, he thought. She really loves me.
Lucinda smiled. "That's why I couldn't tell you. She said she loves you too when you were playing football."
James nodded. "I understand—a promise is a promise. But now, I need to find a way to tell her how I feel."
Lucinda smiled warmly at James. "Now that you know the truth, what are you going to do? Do you have a plan?"
James gazed up at the sky, his thoughts racing as his heart brimmed with emotion. "I'm not sure yet, but I know I have to show Sofia how I feel. I need to do something special for her, especially now, while we still have this time alone."
"That's a good idea. But what about your plan for the ball?" Lucinda asked, curious.
James sighed, though determination flickered in his eyes. "I'll have to change the plan. But I'll figure it out."
Lucinda clasped her hands together, a look of encouragement in her expression. "Well, good luck, James. I hope everything works out for you. You'd better head back to the castle. Don't leave your princess alone for too long!"
James nodded, gratitude filling his voice. "Thank you, Lucinda. I'll return right away."
As James left the village, a sense of urgency propelled his steps. He couldn't shake the overwhelming need to be with Sofia, to see her, to hold her, and to finally confess the feelings he had kept buried for so long.
"Sofia," he whispered to himself as he walked, "my pearl, my heart. I love you, and I'm going to tell you."
