Sofia the First
Sofia and James More than meets the eye
Chapter 5 The Grand Ball
After James carried Sofia to her room, he chose to sleep on the sofa that night, silently deciding he would confess his feelings to Sofia at the ball.
The next morning, Sofia woke up.
Sofia's Thoughts:
Where am I? Oh, we're in my room. But how? Oh, right—we fell asleep in the study room. James must have carried me here. How sweet of him. Look at him, sleeping on the sofa. But... maybe this means he doesn't like me. If he did, wouldn't he have slept in the bed with me? Or perhaps he didn't want it to seem like he likes me. Ugh, pull yourself together, Sofia! You can't let these thoughts distract you. I need to check in with my friends on their task, prepare breakfast for James and me, and tidy up since Amber, Mom, and Dad are coming back today.
As Sofia was about to head downstairs, she ran into Baileywick.
"Sofia, how are you?" Baileywick asked with his usual calm demeanor.
"I'm fine, Baileywick. How about you?" Sofia responded politely.
"We just returned to the castle. We received a message from your parents—they've moved the ball to tonight," Baileywick informed her.
"What? Tonight? Why so soon?" Sofia asked, startled.
"I don't know, Princess. You'll have to ask your parents. They'll be arriving in about two hours," Baileywick explained.
"Oh no! I need to wake up James," Sofia said, turning to rush back to her room.
"I checked his room earlier, but he wasn't there. Where is he?" Baileywick asked, puzzled.
"He's in my room. We fell asleep in the study, and he carried me here. He slept on the sofa," Sofia explained, her cheeks warming slightly.
"How thoughtful of him! And have you told him yet?" Baileywick asked, his tone curious.
"No, Baileywick. I'm sticking to my plan—I'll tell him at the ball," Sofia said firmly.
"I understand. In the meantime, I'm working to find out what your parents think about all this," Baileywick reassured her.
"Thank you, Baileywick. It's nice to have someone I can talk to about this," Sofia said with a grateful smile.
"You can always count on me, Princess Sofia," Baileywick replied warmly.
"I'll go wake him now," Sofia said.
"Go ahead, Princess. We'll handle the preparations. Amber will arrive at any moment, and she's eager to oversee everything herself," Baileywick said with a chuckle.
"That sounds just like Amber. I'll go now—time to wake up my prince," Sofia said playfully as she headed back to her room.
Sofia quietly entered her room and approached James, who was still asleep on the sofa.
"James, come on, wake up," Sofia said softly.
"Sof, I'm awake. What's wrong?" James mumbled groggily.
"The ball has been moved to tonight," Sofia said.
"What?" James asked, sitting up quickly.
"Don't worry—Baileywick is taking care of everything," Sofia reassured him.
"Oh, that's good," James said, relaxing slightly.
After a pause, Sofia looked at him curiously. "James, what happened last night?" she asked.
"Oh, we fell asleep in the study. When I woke up, it was cold, so I carried you here," James explained.
"But why did you sleep on the sofa? I told you there's enough room in my bed for both of us," Sofia asked, narrowing her eyes.
"I didn't want to wake you, Sof," James said, avoiding her gaze.
"James, I know when you're lying," Sofia said, crossing her arms.
"I'm not lying, and I... Well, never mind. There's something I want to ask you later," James stammered.
"Alright, James," Sofia replied, her curiosity piqued.
That wasn't what I wanted to hear, Sofia thought as she left the room. But maybe he has his reasons. He's so adorable when he tries to lie to me. Don't give up hope, Sofia—maybe he does like you.
As James went to his room to change, Amber arrived at the castle. Wasting no time, she began organizing the preparations for the ball.
"Sofia! Where are you?" Amber called out, her voice echoing through the halls.
"I'm here, Amber. Welcome back," Sofia said, greeting her stepsister.
"Thanks, but there's no time for pleasantries. Let's prepare for the ball!" Amber said, already brimming with excitement.
"And you think a big ball is better?" Sofia asked with a gentle tilt of her head.
"Oh, Sofia, this isn't one of your tea parties. This is serious. By the way, where's James? He should be helping us," Amber said, brushing off Sofia's question.
"He went to get dressed, Amber. Don't worry, he'll join us soon," Sofia replied, trying to ease her stepsister's concern.
"I'm not worried, but I want this ball to be absolutely perfect," Amber insisted.
"With your touch, Amber, it's going to be perfect," Sofia said with a reassuring smile.
Amber nodded confidently. "You're right. Let's make it perfect!"
Just then, James descended the stairs. "Sorry for being late," he called out, his voice echoing through the hall.
"Good morning to you too, James," Amber replied, her tone laced with sarcasm.
"Well, James, you didn't waste time this morning," Sofia said with a small laugh.
"I didn't want to keep anyone waiting," James replied, flashing a playful grin.
"You're always late, James," Amber teased, crossing her arms.
"And you're always flawless, Amber," James countered with a smirk.
"Hey, you two, stop it," Sofia interrupted with a light laugh. "Let's focus on what we need to do. There's still so much to prepare."
"Alright, Sof. I'm sorry," James said, holding his hands up in mock surrender.
"No need for apologies, James. But let's get started before Mom and Dad arrive," Sofia urged, her voice firm yet warm.
"Okay, let's get to work!" Amber said enthusiastically.
With tasks delegated, the three got to work. James focused on decorating the ballroom, Amber meticulously organized the castle's layout, and Sofia poured her heart into planning the menu and ensuring the food was perfect.
Hours passed quickly, and soon King Roland and Queen Miranda arrived at the castle. They were pleasantly surprised by how well their children had worked together.
"Well, it seems our kids can handle anything," Roland remarked, beaming with pride.
"I'm impressed too. They've done an amazing job. But where are they?" Miranda asked, scanning the hall.
"Sofia, James, Amber! We're here!" Roland called out.
Moments later, the three siblings appeared, their faces lighting up as they greeted their parents.
"Mom! Dad! You're back!" Sofia exclaimed happily.
"It's so good to be home," Roland said warmly.
Miranda turned to James. "James, it looks like you've been taking excellent care of Sofia."
"He has, Mom. He even cooked for me," Sofia said with a playful laugh.
"Well, son, I'm impressed. Good job," Roland said with an approving nod.
"Thank you, Dad. It wasn't that hard," James replied modestly.
Roland chuckled. "I'm sure it wasn't. But now we've only got four hours before the guests start arriving at 4:30."
"Alright, kids. Go get ready. Your mother and I will take care of the rest," Roland said, gesturing them off.
"Okay, Dad. We're on it," Amber said before heading to her room.
Sofia's Thoughts:
What should I wear tonight? It's such an important night—the night I'll finally find out if James loves me or not. This moment feels like the biggest of my life.
But which dress is right? The violet one, the blue one, or the pink one? I want it to match James's outfit, so maybe I can find out what he's wearing. I know—I'll go to his room and ask him.
James's Thoughts:
This is it. Tonight is the night I'll tell Sofia how I feel. My Sofia. My precious Sofia. I've waited so long for this moment.
I already know what I'll wear—a blue suit. Green feels overdone, and blue suits the occasion. Wait—who's at the door?
Sofia knocked softly before entering. "Hi, James. It's me."
"Hey, Sof. What's up?" James said, turning to her with a smile.
"I wanted to see what you're wearing to the ball," Sofia said casually, though her curiosity was evident.
"I'm wearing blue. What about you?" James asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I haven't decided yet," Sofia admitted.
"Why not, Sof? Are you nervous?" James teased.
"No! I just can't decide—should I wear the blue, pink, or violet dress?" Sofia asked, folding her arms thoughtfully.
"You'd look stunning in any of them, Sof. The choice is yours," James said warmly.
"Thanks, James. While I figure it out, I thought I'd check in on you," Sofia said, smiling faintly.
"I'm doing fine. Do you want me to help you decide?" James offered.
"No, don't worry. I'll manage. I should go check on Amber now," Sofia replied, her tone slightly rushed.
"Alright, Sof. See you later," James said, watching her leave.
As the door closed, James leaned back with a thoughtful smile. That was... unusual. Why did she come to see me? No matter—tonight will be magical. I'll finally show Sofia how much I love her.
Sofia's Thoughts:
So James is wearing blue... Maybe the pink dress will go best. But I should check with Amber—she knows more about this.
Still, what if he doesn't feel the same? What if someone suspects us? No, I need to stop overthinking. I'll adapt to whatever happens. If I do nothing, nothing will change. I have to try—because not trying would haunt me forever.
Even if the world stands against us, at least I'll know I fought for James—for my Jamie. He means everything to me.
Why is it so hard to express love? I missed my chance when we were alone at the castle. Instead, I chose to wait until the ball, in front of everyone. Was that the right choice?
Calm down, Sofia. You're almost at Amber's room. Don't let her see you like this.
"Amber, what are you doing?" Sofia asked, stepping into her sister's room.
"Oh, Sofia! I didn't notice you. I'm picking out my dress for tonight," Amber said without looking up.
"That's great. Amber, I wanted to ask you something," Sofia said hesitantly.
"Go ahead, Sofia. What is it?" Amber asked, finally glancing her way.
"What color goes best with blue?" Sofia asked.
"Purple, obviously. But why are you asking?" Amber replied curiously.
"Oh, because I was thinking of wearing the blue shoes," Sofia replied thoughtfully.
"Then purple is absolutely perfect," Amber said with certainty. "Now, excuse me—I need to finish getting ready for the ball."
"Alright, Amber. Thank you! See you later," Sofia said with a grateful smile as she left the room.
Sofia's Thoughts:
Ah, Amber—always busy and efficient. At least now I know what to wear. The purple dress is perfect. It matches my amulet, my ring, and my tiara. It's elegant, just right for tonight, and just right for James.
But I have to be cautious. What if someone suspects? What if they find out how I feel about him? But... no. I can't let that stop me. I've waited far too long to share my feelings, and tonight is my only chance. I can't lose James to someone else. I'd rather face anything—even rejection—than watch another princess take him away from me.
Later, as Sofia finished getting ready, a swirl of emotions filled her chest. She decided she needed some encouragement. Heading to the garden, she sought out her animal friends.
"Sofia, this is the big night! Go for it, girl!" Clover said, his enthusiasm infectious.
"You've got to trust yourself, Sof. Don't back down. It's now or never," Mia added, her tone firm and encouraging.
"And remember," Robin said with a wise look, "if you don't tell James tonight, you might lose him to someone else. Balls like this are meant for finding love—don't miss your moment."
Sofia felt her heart steady at their words. "Thank you, guys. I truly don't know what I'd do without you. You're right—it's now or never. No matter what happens, I'm not giving up. Not tonight."
"That's the spirit, Princess!" Clover cheered.
"Go get your prince, Sof!" Mia said, fluttering beside her.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, guests began to arrive at the grand castle. Baileywick stood at the entrance, announcing each arrival with regal precision.
"And now, the royal family of Enchancia—King Roland, Queen Miranda, Prince James, Princess Amber, and Princess Sofia!" he proclaimed.
Applause filled the room as the family entered, their presence lighting up the ballroom. Nobles, princes, and princesses from far and wide had gathered, their excitement palpable. Amber quickly joined Hildegard and Cleo, James gravitated toward Zandar, and Sofia made her way to Vivian.
"Hi, Vivian. How are you?" Sofia asked warmly.
"Hi, Sofia! I'm doing well. How about you?" Vivian replied with a smile.
"I'm alright. Are you enjoying the ball so far?" Sofia asked, her curiosity genuine.
"It's beautiful. Your parents are so generous to host such a wonderful event," Vivian said appreciatively.
"It's always a pleasure to host these gatherings," Sofia said modestly.
Vivian hesitated for a moment before asking, "So... have you found a prince yet?"
Sofia's cheeks warmed slightly. "Maybe. What about you?"
Vivian sighed. "I think I might have. I've always liked Prince Desmond, but I'm scared he doesn't feel the same way about me."
Sofia placed a reassuring hand on Vivian's arm. "You'll never know unless you try. Go invite him to dance! The romantic dances are about to start soon—it's the perfect opportunity."
Vivian shook her head nervously. "I'm too scared, Sof. I... I need your help. Could you talk to him for me?"
"How?" Sofia asked, tilting her head slightly.
"Invite him to dance. Maybe you can find out how he feels," Vivian suggested hesitantly.
Sofia sighed but smiled. "Alright, Vivian. I'll do it—for you."
"Thank you, Sofia! You're the best," Vivian said, her voice filled with hope.
As Sofia approached Desmond, she reminded herself to keep the dance short—she didn't want to miss the romantic dance with James.
"Desmond, how are you?" Sofia asked as she reached him.
"Hi, Sofia! I'm doing well. How about you?" Desmond replied warmly.
"I'm good. Would you like to dance?" Sofia asked, extending her hand.
"Of course!" Desmond said as they began to dance. "Actually, I need to tell you something, Sofia."
"What is it, Desmond?" Sofia asked curiously.
"I... I've always had a crush on Princess Vivian, but I don't know how to tell her. You're friends with her—do you think she might like me too?" Desmond asked nervously.
Sofia smiled brightly. "It's perfect, Desmond! Vivian likes you too."
Desmond's eyes lit up. "Really? How should I tell her?"
"Go invite her to dance and share how you feel," Sofia advised with a gentle smile.
Meanwhile, as the romantic dance began, James stood across the room, his gaze fixed on Sofia. He watched as she danced with Desmond, their laughter echoing softly through the ballroom. His chest tightened with each passing second.
James's Thoughts:
Sofia... She likes Desmond. After everything, after all the moments we've shared, she's chosen someone else. But... Lucinda told me she liked me. Was she wrong? Or did I misunderstand? I can't do this. I can't stay here. I need to leave before anyone notices my tears.
Noticing James leaving, Sofia excused herself from Desmond.
"I'm sorry, Desmond, but I have to go. Go to Vivian and tell her how you feel!" Sofia said hurriedly before walking away.
"Thank you, Sofia! I really appreciate your advice," Desmond said with a grateful smile.
Sofia searched the castle frantically, her heart racing. Where is James? Did he leave because he saw me with Desmond? I need to find him. I can't lose my chance to tell him how I feel.
Meanwhile, James had retreated to his room and stepped out onto the balcony, staring at the stars as tears streamed down his face.
James's Thoughts:
Why does it have to be her? Why does she have to be the one to break my heart?
Behind him, Sofia quietly stepped onto the balcony.
"James, what's wrong?" Sofia asked softly, her voice laced with concern.
Startled, James quickly wiped his tears. "Sofia... I didn't see you there. Why are you here?"
"I saw you leave the ball and wanted to check on you," Sofia said gently.
James sighed deeply. "That's very kind of you... Sof, why does life have to be so difficult?"
"What's happened, James? Why are you saying this? And why were you crying?" Sofia asked, stepping closer.
James hesitated before looking at her, his eyes filled with both pain and longing. Then, without a word, he pulled her into a tight embrace and kissed her deeply.
Sofia was startled but quickly melted into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. The kiss was perfect—beneath the stars, in the moonlight, with no one to interrupt.
Sofia clung to James, her heart bursting with emotion. His hands rested firmly on her hips, pulling her closer as their kiss deepened into something raw and passionate.
As James finally broke the kiss, Sofia whispered breathlessly, "James, please tell me I'm not dreaming. Or at least tell me it's the most beautiful dream I've ever had."
James smiled softly. "You're not dreaming, Sof. But if you don't believe me, I'll prove it." He leaned in and kissed her again, pouring every ounce of his love into it.
"James, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this moment. I can't believe it's finally happened," Sofia said, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Sofia... I love you. I've loved you for so long. I can't put into words how much you mean to me," James said sincerely.
"I love you too, James," Sofia said firmly.
They kissed once more, their love sealed beneath the stars. In that moment, the world faded away, and nothing could separate them.
