Sofia the First
Sofia and James More than meets the eye
Chapter 7 The Exodus
As Sofia and James parted ways, Sofia returned to her room, letting the soft glow of the early dawn light guide her steps. She changed into a comfortable nightgown and fell onto her bed, exhaustion tugging at her every muscle, yet her heart brimmed with joy. The night had been magical—a dream come true with her prince by her side.
Sofia's Thoughts:
*What a perfect night. Romantic doesn't even begin to describe it. James was incredible—so thoughtful, so passionate. His letter was written with such feeling, it touched my soul. It made me feel like I was the only girl in the world, cherished beyond words, melting in his embrace as though wrapped in the sweetest of dreams. I love him so much. He's everything I've ever wished for—kind, charming, and so utterly perfect. My prince… my James.
It's nearly 5 a.m. now, and I need some rest. I'll wake in a few hours, but even if I'm tired, tonight was worth everything. Every moment felt like magic. James, I love you more than words can express, and I hope that soon we won't have to keep this a secret. I just want to share our happiness with the world.
Meanwhile, in his room, James lay awake, staring at the faint glow of the horizon as the night slipped away. The stars faded one by one, but his thoughts stayed firmly on Sofia.
James's Thoughts:
*How could this night have been any better? To spend it with Sofia—the girl who lights up my world—it felt like something out of a fairytale. But neither of us said those three words outright—'I love you.' Should I say it first? I need to find a way to tell her what's truly in my heart.
And then there's the matter of our parents. What will they say when they find out? I can only hope Baileywick uncovers something soon. The idea of Sofia being with someone else, or my father arranging a match with another princess—it terrifies me. I won't let anyone take her from me. She's my everything. Tomorrow is a new day, another chance to see her, to hold her, and maybe to finally say what's in my heart. My Sof, my pearl, my love.
As morning broke over Enchancia, the kingdom stirred to life. The melody of birdsong filled the air as farmers set to work in the fields and villagers opened their doors to greet the day.
Inside the castle, King Roland and Queen Miranda rose early, dressed, and made their way to the throne room for their morning meeting. A nobleman awaited them, his expression serious.
"Good morning, Your Majesties," he greeted with a bow.
"Good morning," Roland replied briskly. "What brings you here today?"
"My king, I wanted to inform you of something I noticed last night. After the ball, I saw Princess Sofia in the stables. It was roughly an hour after the festivities had ended," the nobleman explained.
Miranda furrowed her brow, concerned. "What was she doing in the stables at such a late hour?"
The nobleman hesitated before replying. "Some of the guards mentioned that she left with a horse… and a boy."
Roland's expression hardened, anger flickering in his eyes. "A boy? Who was it? We need answers immediately."
"That's all I know for now, Your Majesty. I thought it was important to inform you," the nobleman said before bowing and exiting the room.
Roland paced the floor, tension radiating off him. "Miranda, this is unacceptable. Sofia cannot just leave the castle without our knowledge, especially with someone unknown."
Miranda placed a calming hand on his arm. "Roland, don't overreact. Perhaps she's found someone she loves."
Roland turned to her, his jaw tight. "You know what we agreed upon in council meetings. A princess's duty is to serve her kingdom. Love is secondary to duty."
Miranda sighed, meeting his stern gaze. "But Roland, forcing her into an unwanted match would only harm her and the kingdom in the long run. Love cannot be dictated—it must come naturally."
Roland shook his head, resolute. "We'll speak to her after breakfast. I won't allow this to go unchecked."
Miranda frowned slightly. "Are you sure this is the right approach?"
"It must be done, Miranda. Otherwise, everything we've worked for risks falling apart," Roland replied firmly.
Miranda finally nodded, resigned. "Very well. We'll see what she says."
As the castle came alive with activity, Sofia woke from her brief slumber. She dressed quickly, her mind still lingering on the memories of the night before. As she brushed her hair, she felt a familiar presence behind her.
"Hi, Sof," James said softly, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
Sofia jumped slightly, startled. "James! You scared me!"
James chuckled. "Sorry, I didn't mean to. I just wanted to see you before breakfast."
Sofia shook her head with a playful pout. "You really shouldn't come in without knocking. What if I was—" She was cut off as James spun her around and kissed her, holding her tightly against him.
When they pulled apart, Sofia sighed. "James, we have to be careful. Someone might see us, and we're not ready to tell everyone yet."
James smiled mischievously. "Don't worry, Sof. The front door is locked, and I left the second door cracked so we'll hear if anyone approaches."
Sofia shook her head, trying to hide her smile. "Jamie, we really must be cautious."
James sighed but nodded. "Alright, alright. I'll be more careful. So, what's the plan for today?"
"I don't know, James," Sofia said thoughtfully, her eyes soft as she gazed at him. "But for now, let's just have breakfast. Afterward, we can figure out what to do with the day."
James's lips curled into a mischievous smile. "I have an idea. We'll tell our parents we want to visit the village. That way, we can spend some time together—just the two of us. What do you think?"
Sofia's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "I love it, James. Let's do that."
"Alright, let's go," James said, offering his hand to her.
With smiles on their faces, Sofia and James left her room, heading downstairs together. What they didn't realize, however, was that someone had been watching from just outside the door. Hidden in the shadows stood Amber, her expression one of utter disbelief.
Amber's Thoughts:
What on earth is James doing in Sofia's room? I need to find out, but I need to be subtle about it… Wait… Are they—
Her breath caught as she peeked through the doorway. James and Sofia are kissing? They're together? How is this even possible? Why haven't they told me?
Amber's heart raced as realization dawned on her. So that must be the boy Mom and Dad were talking about in their conversation. But it wasn't just any boy—it was James, my brother. He's the one who left with Sofia last night.
How could I have missed this? Amber's mind reeled as she leaned back against the wall. It seems so obvious now. James always seemed happier when Sofia was around, and she was the same. Were their feelings for each other right under my nose this entire time? Was I blind to it?
Her brow furrowed in frustration. Why didn't they trust me enough to tell me? Maybe it's because they've only just begun their relationship. Yes, that must be it.
Amber took a deep breath, her thoughts coming into focus. I need to decide what to do. Should I tell Mom and Dad? Or should I help Sofia and James? What's the right thing to do here?
She peeked around the corner and saw James and Sofia leaving the room, their voices carrying faintly down the hall.
Amber's resolve hardened. For now, I'll keep this secret. I need to understand their relationship better before I decide anything. If they invite me to join them in the village, I'll use the opportunity to observe them. And… I need to be careful about Mom and Dad. I don't know what their intentions are.
With her thoughts settled, Amber moved quietly to follow her brother and stepsister, her sharp eyes and ears intent on learning everything she could.
At breakfast, the family gathered in the grand dining room, the clinking of cutlery and soft morning light filling the space. A brief silence lingered until Queen Miranda spoke, her voice warm and inviting.
"So, did you all enjoy the ball?" she asked with a gentle smile.
"We did. It was a wonderful event," Sofia, James, and Amber replied in unison, their tones polite.
"We're glad to hear that," Roland said, his voice carrying a note of pride. "You all worked hard to make it a success."
Amber tilted her head, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Daddy, I noticed you ordered supplies to clean the castle. Is something special happening?"
Roland cleared his throat, sitting up straighter in his chair. "Tomorrow, the royal family of Frankia—Prince Hugo's family—will be visiting us. There's an important matter we need to discuss with each of you."
James frowned slightly, glancing at Sofia. "But Dad, Sofia and I were planning to visit the village tomorrow."
Roland shook his head firmly. "I'm sorry, son, but this takes priority. We'll speak to all of you first."
Miranda leaned forward with a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, James. It won't take long. You can go to the village afterward."
Roland nodded, his tone final. "Now, if you'll excuse your mother and me, we have some matters to attend to in the royal room. Afterward, we'll have a discussion with each of you about tomorrow's visit."
With that, Roland and Miranda left the dining room, their presence leaving a slight tension behind. Amber excused herself soon after, heading off to her room to prepare for the day. Sofia and James took the opportunity to slip away for a quiet walk around the castle grounds.
As they strolled along the stone paths, James suddenly stopped, turning to Sofia with a playful glint in his eye. Before she could ask why, he gently pressed her back against the ivy-covered wall of the castle.
"Finally, a good spot for us to kiss," James said with a grin.
Sofia's heart skipped a beat as she looked around nervously. "James, someone might see us—"
Before she could finish, James silenced her with a kiss, his lips pressing tenderly against hers. Sofia melted into the moment, her arms wrapping around his neck as she let herself get lost in the warmth of his embrace. James held her close, his hands resting gently on her waist. He leaned down further, his lips brushing softly against her neck as he inhaled the delicate scent of her rose perfume.
"James," Sofia murmured breathlessly, her cheeks flushed. "Remember when I told you we need to be more careful?"
James smirked, his forehead resting lightly against hers. "Sofia, I don't care who sees us. All I care about is you—and how much we mean to each other."
Sofia's eyes softened, her lips curving into a small smile. "Really, James? Can't you just say 'I love you' instead of teasing me?"
James chuckled. "Ladies first."
Sofia rolled her eyes but couldn't suppress her grin. "How chivalrous of you. But you know, boys usually get scared and run when a girl says it first."
James laughed. "And girls like you are no different—you're just as scared to say it first."
Sofia tilted her head, her voice teasing. "So, is this your plan? To make me fall for you even more?"
James shrugged, his smirk returning. "Maybe."
Sofia laughed, leaning in to kiss him softly. "Well, it's working."
James held her close, his voice growing gentle. "Don't worry, Sofia. I'll make sure our relationship works. And when the time is right, we'll say those three words."
Sofia nodded, her heart full. "Alright, James. Let's go to my secret garden. It's the perfect spot where no one can find us."
James smiled, taking her hand. "Lead the way, my pearl. And let's hope Baileywick finds out something soon about what our parents think."
Unbeknownst to them, Amber had followed silently, her sharp eyes and ears taking in every word.
Amber's Thoughts:
They really love each other. They're so sweet together—like they were meant to be. But I need to figure out what to do. Should I tell them I know and offer to help? Or should I spy on Mom and Dad to find out what's really going on?
Amber clenched her fists, determination sparking in her eyes. They told Baileywick but not me? No matter. I'll set my feelings aside. It's time to fight for their love.
After listening intently for over an hour to her parents' discussion, Amber realized just how critical this day truly was. She pieced together the unsettling truth: during a council meeting, Roland had pledged Sofia's hand to Prince Axel, Hugo's older brother, as part of a political alliance to strengthen their kingdoms.
The weight of the revelation was overwhelming, but Amber didn't let herself falter. Instead, she sprang into action, crafting two plans. The first plan was for the worst-case scenario: if Roland and Miranda opposed Sofia and James's love, the couple would flee the castle using the royal chariot and take refuge in the old house—a quiet, hidden sanctuary James had visited with their late mother. The second plan, which Amber dearly hoped for, relied on their parents accepting Sofia and James's relationship and allowing them to stay together openly and without fear.
Amber knew she had to warn Sofia and James as soon as possible, but her plans were abruptly put on hold when she was summoned by her parents. Thinking quickly, she entrusted Baileywick with her strategy. She instructed him to prepare the chariot and ensure Sofia and James were informed, before heading to meet her parents in the royal throne room.
Meanwhile, Sofia and James were walking hand in hand toward Sofia's secret garden when they were intercepted by a guard.
"Princess Sofia, Prince James," the guard said with a bow. "You have been summoned to return to the castle. The king has requested your presence shortly."
Sofia exchanged a concerned glance with James. "Do you know why we're being summoned?"
"I do not, Your Highness. I was only instructed to inform you," the guard replied.
With a quiet sigh, Sofia nodded, and together, she and James turned back toward the castle, the weight of uncertainty hanging in the air.
In the royal throne room, Amber stood before Roland and Miranda as they began the conversation.
"Amber," Miranda began gently, her tone cautious, "as you know, Hugo's family will be visiting us tomorrow."
Roland folded his hands, his expression composed yet firm. "And as you are aware, Amber, building a relationship with Hugo may be necessary for the benefit of both our kingdoms."
Amber tilted her head slightly, carefully measuring her words. "That's not an issue, Dad. I like Hugo, and I know he likes me too. But what about his older brother?"
Miranda shifted uncomfortably, while Roland cleared his throat. "Amber, Prince Axel has expressed interest in Sofia. The council agreed that he should have the opportunity to pursue a relationship with her. For now, we ask that you not speak to her about this."
Amber's composure faltered, her brows knitting together in disbelief. "But Dad, shouldn't Sofia have the right to choose her own true love? What if she's already found someone she loves?"
Roland let out a deep sigh, his voice steady but resolute. "Amber, as royals, sacrifices are often necessary. It's not about personal desires—it's about duty and responsibility. We make decisions for the greater good, even when they're difficult."
Amber's eyes narrowed. "But Dad, what if Sofia doesn't want a royal life? Doesn't she deserve a choice?"
Roland's tone grew sharper. "This isn't about what she wants, Amber. It's about her responsibility as a princess. You may leave now."
Though frustration burned within her, Amber held her tongue and left the throne room. As she exited, she heard Roland summon Sofia. Her urgency mounting, she headed off to find James.
Amber found James pacing in the hallway, his expression tense. She wasted no time.
"James, we need to talk," Amber said, her tone low but insistent.
James turned to her, his brows furrowed. "What's going on?"
Amber took a steadying breath. "I know about your relationship with Sofia. I saw you two last night."
James stiffened, his voice guarded. "What have you done, Amber?"
Amber shook her head quickly. "Nothing. But you need to listen—there's no time for arguments. Mom and Dad plan to arrange a relationship between Sofia and Axel. But don't worry—I have a plan. If they don't accept your love, you and Sofia will flee to the old house we used to visit with Mom. Baileywick is already preparing the chariot. If they do accept, everything will be fine, and you can stay."
James blinked in surprise, gratitude softening his expression. "Amber, I… Thank you. I mean it. You're the best sister I could ask for. But how could Mom and Dad even think of doing this to Sofia?"
Amber sighed. "I don't know all the details, James. What's important is that you're ready. When they summon you, tell them the truth about your feelings for Sofia. If they don't accept…" She handed him a sword. "Take this. I'll make sure you and Sofia escape safely. Supplies are already taken care of."
James tightened his grip on the sword, his determination solidifying. "Thank you, Amber. I won't let anyone take Sofia from me."
In the throne room, Sofia stood before her parents, her heart heavy.
"Sofia," Miranda began gently, "we need to ask you something, and we need your honesty."
Sofia swallowed hard, nodding. "Of course, Mom and Dad."
Roland's tone was stern. "Where were you last night?"
Sofia hesitated, her mind racing. "In my room. I went to sleep after the ball," she replied carefully.
Roland's gaze hardened. "Sofia, I'll ask you once more. Tell the truth."
Sofia's hands fidgeted, her heart pounding. What do I say?
"Sofia," Roland continued firmly, "we know you left the castle with a boy. The council has decided that Prince Axel should pursue a relationship with you for the benefit of our kingdoms. Now, tell us—who was the boy you were with?"
Anger surged through Sofia, and she took a step forward. "Dad! Mom! How could you? You can't force me into a relationship with someone I don't love!"
Roland's expression remained firm. "Sometimes, sacrifices must be made for the good of the kingdom, Sofia."
Sofia's voice rose, filled with conviction. "I won't be used as a tool for political agreements!"
Before Roland could respond, the doors swung open, and James strode into the room.
James walked with purpose, his presence commanding the room. He took Sofia's hand in his and stood protectively beside her.
"Mom. Dad. Sofia wasn't with some unknown boy last night—she was with me," James declared boldly. "We're in a relationship, and I won't let anyone, not even Axel, take her away from me."
Roland and Miranda froze, shock evident on their faces.
"James, this can't be," Miranda said, her voice trembling.
"It is," Sofia said firmly. "And you can't force us apart. We'll fight for our love."
Roland's expression darkened with anger. "You'll obey your king. This relationship ends now."
James's voice was unyielding. "Don't push me, Dad. You'll regret it. Sofia is mine, and no one—not even you—will change that."
Roland shouted for the guards, but James acted swiftly, disarming them with precision while ensuring no one was harmed.
"Run, Sofia! Get to the chariot. I'll handle this," James commanded.
Sofia ran to the chariot, where Amber, Robin, Mia, and Clover were waiting.
"Go! I'll hold them off," Amber said resolutely.
James hesitated. "Amber, come with us!"
Amber's eyes softened. "No, big brother. I'll stay and give you time. Protect Sofia. Go!"
James stepped onto the chariot, his voice filled with sadness. "I never imagined it would end like this."
Amber's faint smile carried both courage and sorrow. "Neither did I, big brother. But now, protect your love. I'll handle Mom and Dad."
As the chariot lifted into the air, Sofia looked back at the castle, tears streaming down her cheeks. Despite the pain, she resolved to face the challenges ahead, knowing she and James would stand together—no matter what.
