Sofia the First
Sofia and James more than meets the eye
Chapter 9 The Exiles Part 2
So this was it—Sofia and James's escape from the castle. Their escape was not just from the palace walls but from the weight of expectations and judgment that had sought to cage their love. And for what? For daring to love each other? Why must there always be those who stand in the way of love? What was so wrong in their devotion to one another? They loved deeply, truly, and now even Roland had begun to understand. He saw that James would stop at nothing to protect Sofia, his one true love.
But this story was only at its beginning, and there was so much more to tell.
Sofia and James sat with Baileywick and Amber, discussing the effects of the potion on King Roland. For the first time, Sofia and James began to understand that perhaps their father wasn't entirely at fault.
Still, they both knew this was only the start of a long and difficult road. There was no turning back now. They had to fight for their love, no matter the cost.
It would be a hard road, filled with traps and challenges, but at least they would know if their love could triumph. They had to fight for it—because it was theirs.
Even as they spoke, their thoughts drifted to the arrangement their father had made. Neither of them had expected Prince Axel to want Sofia as his queen. Frankia was a larger kingdom than Enchancia, and Axel's interest in Sofia was no small matter. But James was a great leader, and he knew Enchancia could resist any invasion from Frankia if it came to that. He had always believed that Enchancia's strength lay in uniting its territories into one powerful kingdom.
But for now, none of that mattered to James. His only thoughts were of Sofia—how to protect her, how to make their parents accept their love.
Despite everything working against them, their love remained steadfast, their faith unshaken. They knew that as long as they were together, they could face anything.
"So, Amber, Baileywick, are you sure about what you've told us?" James asked, his tone serious.
"We are, James," Amber replied. "Cedric said the antidote will take four to eleven days to prepare."
"So, you two will stay here for a while," Baileywick added.
Sofia smiled softly. "Don't worry, Baileywick. We can handle it. As long as we're together, we're happy."
Amber crossed her arms, her expression playful but firm. "I know, but I'm still mad at you two."
James raised an eyebrow. "For what?"
"For not telling me about your love," Amber said, her voice tinged with mock indignation. "And for telling Baileywick before you told me."
Sofia sighed, her tone apologetic. "Amber, we're sorry. We made a mistake, but we told Baileywick because he was the only one who could figure out Mom and Dad's intentions."
James smiled warmly. "And after all, Amber, you're our hero. You saved us."
Amber smirked, her confidence returning. "I know. What would you two do without me?"
Sofia laughed softly. "I don't think anyone here wants to find out."
Baileywick cleared his throat. "And let's not forget—your mother helped us. She seems to be on your side."
Amber's expression darkened slightly. "Maybe. But like I told you, we can't fully trust her yet. She might just be trying to find this place. For now, we need to keep this location a secret."
James nodded reluctantly. "I hate to admit it, but Amber's right. We can't trust Mom completely—not yet. We need to keep things as they are for now."
Sofia sighed. "We'll decide later if we can tell her about this place."
Amber nodded. "Exactly. Don't worry—we'll keep everything under control. And we'll try to come every night to check on you."
Baileywick glanced at the clock, his expression turning serious. "Amber, we need to return to the castle before it's too late."
James stepped forward, his tone protective. "Go before Dad realizes you're gone and does something against you."
Amber hugged Sofia tightly. "Take care of yourself, Sofia."
Baileywick placed a hand on James's shoulder. "And you, James—guard her with your life."
James nodded firmly. "We will. See you tomorrow. Good night."
Amber smirked as she turned to leave. "Good night. And don't worry—if anyone approaches, they'll regret it."
After Amber and Baileywick left, Sofia and James were finally alone.
"James, I don't know about you, but I'm going to sleep. I'm exhausted," Sofia said, stretching.
James smiled, his voice soft. "I'm tired too. Let's get some rest. Tomorrow is a big day."
Sofia tilted her head curiously. "Why is tomorrow a big day?"
James stepped closer, wrapping his arms around her. "It's our first day where we don't have to hide anymore. We can kiss whenever we want and—" He leaned in, capturing her lips in a deep, heartfelt kiss. Sofia closed her eyes, her hands wrapping around his neck as she melted into his embrace.
In that moment, they were happy. They didn't need the castle, the titles, or the luxuries of royal life. All they needed was each other. For the first time in what felt like forever, they felt free. Free to love, free to be themselves, free to exist without judgment.
Even in the face of dire times, they found joy in their togetherness. And though they knew the road ahead would be long and treacherous, they held onto the hope that their love would endure.
Because this was it—their journey into exile. The beginning of a path that would challenge them at every turn but also prove the strength of their love.
But now, let's focus on why Roland would want both Sofia and Amber to marry Axel and Hugo. The kingdom of Frankia was one of the most powerful kingdoms in the known world. Their armed forces were formidable, and their royal navy was vast—far larger than Enchancia's navy and military. Some advisers and members of the council had long understood that reuniting all of Enchancia's territories would require conflict, and they knew Frankia might oppose such efforts. A united Enchancia would threaten the balance of power in Europe, challenging the dominance of the continent's top players.
Europe was in turmoil—a time of rising and falling empires, shifting borders, and the birth and collapse of nations. In such a volatile era, King Roland's decision might have been a strategic one. A king's duty is to make decisions not for himself, but for his kingdom and its people. His role is to ensure the survival, growth, and prosperity of his realm, even if it means making difficult choices.
Perhaps Roland believed this was the best path for Enchancia. But if he had known Amber's feelings for Prince Hugo, he might have only offered her hand in marriage, leaving Sofia and James free to pursue their relationship.
And yet, even as a king, one cannot dictate the heart. A ruler's role is to guide, not to force. Love is a natural, unbidden thing, and Sofia and James's feelings for each other were no exception. Their mother and father's marriage was not their doing, nor was it their fault that they fell in love. They shared no blood—they were step-siblings, not bound by any biological ties.
Sofia and James's love was, in many ways, inevitable. They had always been a great team, complementing each other's strengths and finding solutions together. They both possessed the qualities of true leaders—courage, wisdom, and compassion. Their bond was evident to those around them, whether in the way James nearly fought Hugo for insulting Sofia, or how Sofia defended James when Hildegard called him a fool. They always stood up for each other, always protected one another.
Even when they argued, they remained a strong team. To some, they already seemed like a perfect couple.
James had harbored feelings for Sofia since the day he met her, and Sofia had felt the same since she first arrived at the castle. They shared so much in common—their love of adventure, their kindness toward others, their desire to protect, and their ability to lead and innovate. They were natural partners, and perhaps they would make an extraordinary couple. But even if they didn't, they owed it to themselves to try.
Of course, there would be opposition. There would always be those who stood against them, who sought to tear them apart. But Sofia and James knew they had to resist. Their path would be long and treacherous, filled with traps and challenges. They would need to be cautious, trusting only those they deemed truly reliable.
Returning to the main story, Sofia and James retreated to their bedroom. After changing into more comfortable clothes, they climbed into bed. James pulled Sofia close, guiding her head to rest on his chest as he gently ran his fingers through her hair.
Sofia's Thoughts
James, you make me feel so safe. So warm. I don't care where we are—as long as I'm with you, I'm happy. You've given up so much for me, and I'll never forget that. I'll never stop loving you.
"Sofia, it's so nice to hold you this close," James murmured, his voice soft and full of affection. "To feel your hands, to hear your heartbeat, to smell your scent…"
Sofia smiled softly, her voice warm. "James, you know how nice it is to hold your hand, to hear your heart, to feel you, to touch you, and to be so close to you."
"And does it make you feel warm?" James asked, his tone teasing.
"Of course," Sofia replied. "I felt a bit cold when I first came into the room, but now it's better."
James sighed, his voice growing more serious. "Sofia, you don't know how hard it was for me that night—to feel you so close but not be able to touch you, to hold you, to kiss you…"
Sofia's cheeks flushed slightly as she remembered. "James, I know. That was the first time I confessed my love for you. I took your hand, and I said it first."
James smiled, his fingers still threading through her hair. "I know. That was also the first time I confessed my love to you."
Sofia tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "How did you know it was real?"
James chuckled softly. "I told Lucinda to cast a spell to show me if I had dreamed it or if it had really happened."
Sofia's eyes widened in surprise. "Really? You did that?"
"Yes," James admitted. "Is that strange? I also told Lucinda about my feelings for you. I needed someone to talk to."
Sofia smiled, her heart swelling with affection. "No, it's not strange. It's sweet."
"I also told Lucinda, and you know, she never told me that you'd shared your feelings for me with her," Sofia said with a soft smile.
James chuckled, his voice filled with warmth. "How strange. It's as if we both thought the same thing, made the same move—as if we're perfectly in sync."
Sofia's gaze softened as she leaned closer. "I know, James. Maybe it's because we're meant to be together. When two people are bound like we are, it's only natural that they think alike."
James held her tighter, his voice steady but full of emotion. "It's so nice to finally hold you like this, Sof. To not worry about someone watching us, judging us... Just you and me."
Sofia sighed, her eyes shining with affection. "James, I've always had a crush on you. Ever since I first met you, I've thought you were amazing. What more could I want than someone like you? You're kind, calm, handsome, smart... You've always stood up for me, no matter what. Whenever I felt lost or upset, you'd show up and find a way to make everything better, to make me feel special. Every little thing you did made my feelings for you grow. Day by day, you became the one person I couldn't stop thinking about. You made me see that there's no one else in the world for me but you."
Sofia stopped as she noticed James's eyes filling with tears. His heart was overflowing with happiness, and he could no longer hold back. With overwhelming emotion, he leaned forward and kissed her, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate embrace. He held her as close as he could, as if trying to merge their very souls.
Sofia felt her heart race, her body melting under his touch. His kisses were warm, intoxicating, and filled with a love so powerful that she never wanted the moment to end. She wanted to stay like this forever—lost in his arms, tasting his lips, feeling the beat of his heart against hers.
For James, this kiss was everything. He kissed her deeply, unwilling to let go, wanting to stay in their shared world where no one could intrude. Every sacrifice they had made to be together felt worth it. He knew with certainty that he couldn't live without her, that they were meant to be.
The room was filled with an atmosphere of pure love and passion. They kissed until exhaustion overtook them and they fell asleep, still wrapped in each other's arms.
James woke abruptly, finding himself standing on a hill overlooking the village. In the distance, the castle loomed, majestic and strong—a proud shield of the kingdom. As he tried to make sense of where he was, he heard a familiar voice behind him. Turning, he saw Elizabeth standing there, her face serious.
She raised a hand, pointing toward the castle. James followed her gesture, but when he looked back, the scene had changed entirely.
The village was engulfed in chaos. Thick black smoke curled into the sky, and an army was massed at the bridge leading to the castle. The castle itself was in ruins, flames consuming its towers and walls. Screams echoed faintly, sending chills through James's body.
Tears began streaming down his cheeks as he ran toward the castle. Picking up a sword, he fought desperately, carving a path through the destruction toward the main gate, which lay in shattered pieces. Once inside the courtyard, he screamed Sofia's name.
"Sofia!"
But there was no answer.
James's heart dropped as his eyes fell on the scene before him. His father lay lifeless on the ground, a sword driven through his chest. Nearby, his mother lay with her throat cruelly slit. Amber cowered in a corner, her face pale with fear. Guards appeared, dragging Amber into a cage—and James's heart stopped as he saw Sofia inside it, her wrists bound.
"No!" James shouted, rushing toward them.
But before he could reach the cage, the scene shifted. He was back on the hill, the castle a distant silhouette.
Elizabeth stepped forward, her voice calm but firm. "This is what will happen if you fail."
James turned to her, his voice shaking. "Where is Sofia? What does all of this mean?"
Elizabeth's gaze softened as she placed a hand on his shoulder. "Relax, James. This is a dream, a vision created by a spell. It's a possible future—a warning of what could happen if you falter in your task. You must protect Sofia at all costs. Her ring and amulet are vital, and you must safeguard them. And above all, you must protect your love for her."
She paused, her voice growing even more serious. "Sofia is your soulmate, James, and you are a part of a greater prophecy. You are the rising king who will unite Enchancia and other nations. But your journey will not be easy. You'll face countless enemies, and your kingdom will need you to stand strong."
James took a deep breath, trying to process her words. "So, what I saw—it was only a dream?"
Elizabeth nodded. "Yes, only a dream. But it's a warning—a glimpse of what could become reality if you falter."
James's voice was resolute. "How will I know how to make the right choices?"
Elizabeth smiled faintly. "You'll see, James. There will be many decisions to make, but always remember what you're fighting for—your love, your faith, and your kingdom."
James hesitated, looking at her intently. "Will you be able to help me?"
Elizabeth stepped closer, her voice steady. "I can guide you, James. But the path is yours to walk. You must lead—with Sofia by your side. She's your partner in this journey, your equal."
James tilted his head slightly. "Does the prophecy tell us we'll always be together?"
Elizabeth's expression softened further. "I cannot be certain. But everything I've seen so far points to this—you are destined to be together."
Her figure began to shimmer, her voice growing faint. "Now rest, James. I can't hold this spell much longer."
As her image faded, James heard a familiar voice calling to him, soft and urgent.
"James, wake up…"
James opened his eyes to find Sofia leaning over him, her expression filled with worry.
"James, wake up," she said again, shaking him gently.
Relief flooded James as he pulled her into a tight embrace. "Sofia, you're here. You're safe."
Sofia frowned slightly, her voice filled with concern. "Of course I'm here. What happened?"
James sighed, his voice heavy. "I had a nightmare…"
Sofia's expression softened. "I noticed. You were moving and talking in your sleep… calling for me."
James shook his head, forcing a small smile. "It was nothing. Probably just the weight of the day catching up to me. Let's get some rest."
Sofia nodded, letting him hold her close as they settled back into bed. Despite his unease, James found comfort in Sofia's presence, the steady rhythm of her heartbeat soothing his troubled mind.
And so they did—they fell asleep, wrapped in each other's arms, as the night quietly faded into dawn.
But peace did not come with the morning. Back at the castle, preparations were in full swing for the arrival of the royal family of Frankia. Today would mark the beginning of a crucial audience between the two kingdoms—a meeting fraught with tension and uncertainty.
The atmosphere within the castle was heavy, weighed down by the turmoil that James and Sofia's escape had unleashed. Their disappearance had thrown the court into chaos, and the guards' inability to apprehend them had left King Roland grappling with a crisis. Now, Roland faced an impossible task: explaining to the King of Frankia why he could no longer honor the agreement made at the council.
The stakes could not be higher. The whispers of the courtiers and advisers echoed through the halls like shadows. Rumors of war began to swirl—dark speculation that Frankia might retaliate if Enchancia reneged on its promises. Many feared the wrath of Frankia's vast navy and powerful military, a force far superior to Enchancia's defenses.
For King Roland, the delicate balance between these two kingdoms threatened to crumble beneath him. Time was running out, and the consequences of failure loomed large. The wrong move could mean devastation—not just for the castle but for the entire kingdom of Enchancia.
It was more than a diplomatic meeting—it was a test of survival. And amid the uncertainty, Roland desperately searched for a way to salvage the situation before catastrophe struck.
