Sofia the First
Sofia and James More than Meets the Eye
Chapter 10: The King of Frankia
The castle was alive with activity as the royal staff prepared for the most significant visit of the year. King Stefan, Queen Caroline, Prince Hugo, and Prince Axel of Frankia were set to arrive that morning, and every servant, steward, and soldier was hard at work. Every corner of the grand halls was being cleaned and polished, every detail meticulously attended to, as Enchancia braced itself for this pivotal meeting.
But amidst the flurry of preparations, King Roland sat in silent turmoil. In the recesses of his mind, a storm raged—a battle between his duties as king and the chaos that James and Sofia's escape had unleashed upon his kingdom. The potential for war loomed ominously in his thoughts, and he knew all too well that Enchancia was far from ready to face Frankia's formidable might. The kingdom's navy and military could not rival Frankia's power. He was acutely aware of the consequences if he failed to mend this fractured alliance.
He wondered if offering Amber's hand to Prince Hugo would suffice to restore peace. But Axel was the heir to Frankia's throne, and Hugo would never hold the same influence. Roland needed an answer, a carefully crafted solution to salvage relations between their kingdoms. Yet, the problem wasn't just diplomatic—it was personal. This ordeal was known only to his inner circle and the council, but that secrecy couldn't shield him from the pressing reality.
Roland's Thoughts
What a disaster this has become. Damn their love—it has thrown the kingdom into one of its darkest hours. Why haven't we found them yet? How can my guards fail me at such a crucial time? This is a disgrace, a humiliation that I can barely endure.
I gave my word to King Stefan. I promised Sofia to Axel, not Hugo. Axel, the future king of Frankia, won't simply accept a replacement. He wants Sofia. And now she's gone, in love with James... How could I have missed this? How could I have been so blind to their feelings for each other?
But there's no time for regret—I must act. I need to find them. Amber knows where they are, I'm certain of it, but she refuses to speak. Perhaps Miranda has some insight. We've already searched the village, Ruby and Jade's homes, everywhere—yet still no trace. How could they have vanished so completely?
And now Stefan and his family are about to arrive, expecting answers. This day will not end well. My promise remains unfulfilled, and Axel's fury will only worsen the situation. If I don't resolve this soon, the consequences could be catastrophic. When I find James and Sofia, they'll pay for this... No, what am I saying? How can I feel so much anger toward their love? But why can't I control this rage? It's as though something dark is twisting my thoughts, feeding my fury…
Meanwhile, Amber, Miranda, Cedric, and Baileywick had gathered in Amber's room, their voices low but urgent as they discussed the situation surrounding Sofia and James.
"So, they're okay?" Miranda asked, concern etched across her face.
"Yes, Mom. They're fine," Amber assured her. "They can manage until we finish the potion and cure Dad."
Baileywick nodded, his voice calm but thoughtful. "They've proven they're willing to stand strong, no matter what. Their love has already withstood so much."
Miranda's expression softened, but she shook her head slightly. "I understand, Baileywick, but they're so young. Can they really face all the challenges ahead of them?"
Amber leaned forward, her voice steady with conviction. "Mom, you'll see—they truly love each other. No one can come between them, no matter how hard they try."
Miranda sighed. "We still need to keep their supply line intact. But with Frankia's royal family arriving today, it's risky. We can't take any chances that might expose them."
Baileywick added thoughtfully, "Perhaps we should pause the deliveries for a few days. Last night, we ensured they had enough supplies to last four or five days."
Amber frowned slightly. "Even so, I'd prefer to continue tonight. I don't like the idea of leaving them isolated for too long."
Baileywick offered a suggestion. "Princess Amber, since we left them some money, we can send a message letting them know we can't visit for a few days. It's safer."
Amber considered this, then nodded. "You're right. We can't afford for Dad or the royal family to grow suspicious. We need to act as if we know nothing."
Cedric stepped in with a firm nod. "I can take care of this. I'll send Wormwood with a message to Prince James and Princess Sofia."
Amber smiled faintly. "Perfect. I'll write the letter now. Mom, Baileywick, could you check on Dad and see what he's doing? Cedric, start preparing for the delivery."
Miranda rose to her feet, nodding. "Alright. Let's each attend to our tasks—we'll reconvene later."
The castle brimmed with tension as the morning pressed on. At last, at 9:00 a.m., the royal chariot of Frankia descended upon the castle gates. Trumpets blared as courtiers and guards lined the grand courtyard, bowing deeply to welcome King Stefan, Queen Caroline, Prince Hugo, and Prince Axel. The royal family was escorted into the throne room, where King Roland, Queen Miranda, and Princess Amber stood waiting to greet them.
King Stefan strode forward with regal grace, his presence commanding the room. Roland rose from his throne to meet him.
"Greetings. We've been anticipating your arrival," Roland said, his tone formal.
"Greetings. We are glad to finally be here," Stefan replied.
Miranda stepped in, her voice warm. "Come—you must be weary from your journey."
Queen Caroline smiled faintly. "Indeed, it was a long road."
Stefan turned to Hugo. "Hugo, you may leave for now. We have important matters to discuss."
Amber approached with a polite smile. "Come with me, Prince Hugo," she said, leading him from the room.
As the doors closed, Stefan turned to Roland, his expression growing serious. "Now, Roland—I couldn't help but notice Princess Sofia and Prince James aren't here. Is something wrong?"
Roland hesitated, his voice tight. "Stefan, we have much to discuss."
Stefan frowned slightly. "Then let's begin. What's happened?"
Roland took a deep breath before speaking. "Sofia and James... They've left the castle. We discovered they have feelings for each other."
Axel's face darkened, his voice rising in fury. "What?! You promised my father Sofia would become my queen!"
Stefan raised a hand to silence him. "Axel, calm yourself. Leave us for now—I will handle this."
Axel glared at Roland before storming out of the room.
Stefan's gaze returned to Roland, his voice measured. "You were saying Sofia and James have left the castle?"
Roland nodded gravely. "Yes. I tried to stop them, but they escaped. We haven't been able to find them. I deeply regret failing to fulfill my promise."
Stefan's expression softened slightly. "Roland, don't worry. We'll find them and speak to them. If Sofia truly wishes to be with James, we cannot stand in their way—even if Axel objects. As for Amber and Hugo, we are open to letting them explore a relationship. Hugo has expressed interest in her."
Roland sighed deeply. "Perhaps I was wrong to force them. Maybe I was too harsh, pushing them into exile. But I want to Thank you, old friend"
Stefan looked surprised. "Why are you thanking me?"
Roland sighed. "For understanding this situation. I expected worse."
Stefan nodded. "I hope you didn't thought about me starting a war for something like this. Sometimes even kings must accept what we cannot control. Love is not something to command. My intent was simply to strengthen our kingdoms—especially given the warnings raised at the council about the Eastern Empire."
Roland agreed, his voice heavy. "You're right. Enchancia must grow stronger to stand against the Eastern rising."
Meanwhile, Hugo and Amber wandered through the royal garden, the vibrant flowers framing their path in bursts of color. The air carried the soft fragrance of blooming roses, the gentle rustling of leaves creating an intimate atmosphere. Yet, in Hugo's mind, there was turmoil—his thoughts completely consumed by Amber.
Hugo's Thoughts
Amber… She's mesmerizing, more beautiful than I ever imagined. But there's more to her than what meets the eye. She's strong, intelligent, kind. She sees the world in ways that leave me speechless. Gosh, I can't stop myself. I'm under her spell. She's everything I could ever want. No, she's more than that—she's my chosen one, the woman I was meant to spend my life with. I never understood before what love could feel like, what it means to devote yourself completely to someone. But Amber… Amber is different. She's shown me what life could be. She's my soulmate, my rose.
Yet, there's a fear beneath all these thoughts. I was such a fool, so selfish and arrogant when I was younger. I almost lost her—no, I almost lost myself. But thanks to Sofia, I've realized my mistakes, and now there's no turning back. I'll do anything to make her mine. I can't let her go. Not now. Not ever.
Amber's voice suddenly pulled Hugo out of his thoughts.
"Hugo…" Amber said softly, her tone curious.
Hugo blinked, caught off guard. "Um, yeah—what is it?"
Amber tilted her head slightly, studying him. "Were you even listening to me?"
Hugo hesitated before offering a sheepish smile. "Uh, yeah—a little. Sorry, Amber. I guess I got lost in my thoughts."
Amber chuckled lightly, a warmth in her expression. "Oh, it's alright. I was just…" She paused as Hugo stepped closer, his gaze unwavering and intense.
"Amber," he began, his voice suddenly steady and serious. "There's something I need to tell you—something I've been holding back for a while."
Amber's heart skipped a beat. "Yes? What is it?"
Hugo hesitated no longer. He gently took her into his arms and pressed his lips to hers. It wasn't just a kiss—it was a declaration, an offering of everything he had to give. Hugo pulled her as close as possible, his arms wrapping around her like they could shield her from the rest of the world. He didn't want the kiss to end, didn't want this moment to slip away.
Amber's heart raced, her breath catching as she melted into the kiss. She'd always had feelings for Hugo—a quiet crush that had grown stronger as she saw his transformation over time. Sofia's encouragement had helped him change, become the man Amber had always hoped he could be. In that moment, she realized Hugo was perfect for her, her match in every way.
The world seemed to fade around them as they became lost in their shared passion, their shared connection. The garden's beauty paled in comparison to the warmth and intensity of their first kiss. Together, they created an atmosphere of romance—tender, fiery, and deeply personal.
Amber was the first to break the kiss, her voice soft yet steady. "Hugo, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this to happen."
Hugo smiled, his voice filled with emotion. "I can imagine. It's been the same for me, Amber. I realized a while ago that I might lose you because of how childish I used to be. But Sofia helped me see things clearly. I knew I needed to change for you. Amber, I lo—"
Before he could finish, Amber silenced him with another kiss, more passionate and tender than the last. She held him tightly, her emotions pouring into the moment.
They felt like they were dancing—a dance of love, life, and intimacy that couldn't be stopped. Their connection was undeniable, the foundation of something unbreakable. Together, they created a world of their own, where nothing else mattered.
Meanwhile, back at the house, sunlight poured through the windows as Sofia woke, her eyes fluttering open to find James still sound asleep beside her. She smiled softly, watching him for a moment as he lay peacefully, his expression calm and content.
"Maybe it's too early to wake you," Sofia murmured quietly to herself. "I'll let you rest. After everything we've been through, you deserve it."
Carefully, she climbed out of bed, being mindful not to disturb him. As she made her way downstairs, her mind wandered to the events of the past few days—their escape, their struggles, and the moments they had stolen for themselves. She resolved to make this morning as peaceful as possible for James, to give him a chance to relax without worry or responsibility.
Once in the kitchen, Sofia began preparing breakfast. She wanted it to be special, so she made pancakes with chocolate—James's favorite. She couldn't help but smile as she worked, imagining the look of joy on his face when he woke and saw the breakfast waiting for him.
Suddenly, a knock came from the door, interrupting her thoughts.
"Clover, can you open the door for me?" Sofia called out, her tone cheerful.
"We'll do, Princess!" Clover replied as he trotted to the door with the other pets.
Moments later, the door swung open, and a black bird flew inside, landing gracefully near Sofia.
"Sofia, I'm glad I found you. I brought you something," said Wormwood.
Sofia turned to him with a smile. "Wormwood! It's good to see you. What is it you've brought?"
"It's a letter from Amber and the others," Wormwood replied, holding out the letter.
Sofia reached for it, her expression brightening. "Thank you so much. You look tired—would you like something to eat or maybe some rest before you leave?"
Wormwood shook his head gently. "Thank you for offering, but I must head back right away. Take care, Sofia—I'll see you soon."
Sofia nodded warmly. "Alright, Wormwood. Safe travels. See you soon!"
As Wormwood left, Clover approached Sofia with a serious look.
"Sofia, we're going to leave for a while. We're heading into the woods to gather help from the animals. They can alert us if anyone hostile comes near this place."
Sofia paused, then nodded with approval. "That's a brilliant idea. Go ahead, and please be careful out there. I'll see you soon."
"We'll be back soon, Princess!" Clover and the other pets chorused as they headed for the woods.
Sofia watched them go before turning back to the stove, her thoughts returning to James. She wanted to make every moment count, knowing they'd both need strength for whatever lay ahead.
After preparing breakfast, Sofia sat at the kitchen table and carefully unfolded the letter Amber had sent. Her eyes scanned the familiar handwriting, a sense of comfort washing over her as she began to read.
Dear Sofia and James,
I'm sorry that I couldn't come personally, but with Hugo's family arriving, it's far too risky for us to visit you right now. I couldn't bear for you two to feel upset or worried, so I decided to send you this letter instead. Knowing James, he's probably still asleep—and you, Sofia, are likely the one reading this first.
This morning has been all about preparing for the "great arrival." Baileywick and I wanted so badly to come, but with so many eyes on us, someone might spot us and reveal your location. We'll try our best to come soon, but for now, remember you have money if you need anything. Just be cautious and avoid the guards—you know how determined they are to find you both.
Don't worry about the royal family of Frankia. We'll handle them. I won't let anyone come between you two. If someone dares, they'll have to go through me first! I know you're probably laughing at this part, but I mean it. We'll solve this, Sof—we always do.
Today is also a big day for me. I'll finally find out if Hugo likes me. You know I've always had a crush on him, and ever since you helped him change, my feelings for him have only grown stronger. I can't believe how much my life has changed recently, and Hugo is a big part of that. Thank you for helping him, Sof.
I also have to say—James had better take good care of you. If he doesn't, he'll have to answer to me! But knowing James, I don't need to worry. He's such a kind and noble boy, and I know he'd do anything to protect you. He's my twin, after all, and I trust him completely.
Oh, and some good news—Cedric's potion for Dad is starting to work! We're making progress. Soon, we'll have everything under control, and we'll all be able to return to normal. I know it feels like we're stuck in the middle of a trap, but we'll get through it together. We just have to stay patient and trust that destiny will guide us.
Now, before I finish, Mom wanted to add her thoughts. Here she is:
From Miranda:
Sofia, James—my heart is lighter knowing you're safe and managing so well. I'm so proud of the strength and grace you've shown. You've both endured so much, and still, you hold onto hope and love.
There aren't enough words for how sorry I am. Knowing you're safe is the only thing keeping my heart from breaking entirely. But I can't escape the guilt. I should have stood by you. I should have fought for you.
Instead, I hesitated. I watched as the world turned against your love, and I didn't do enough to stop it. I allowed fear to paralyze me when I should have been your protector. I could have been the voice that shielded you both from harm, but I wasn't. And because of that, you were forced to leave, to fend for yourselves when all you deserved was our unconditional support.
This failure will haunt me forever. As your mother, it was my duty to stand by you, to give you the love and strength you needed. Instead, I faltered. I allowed doubt and indecision to take hold, and in doing so, I failed you both.
But please, Sofia and James, know this—I am determined to make things right. You are my children, and I cannot lose you. I won't let anyone or anything come between us again. I will do whatever it takes to earn back your trust and to ensure you have the happiness and safety you deserve.
Sofia, I've always said you are stronger than anyone knows. You've proven that time and again, and now more than ever, I see the strength within you. Your heart is unbreakable—pure iron forged through trials no one should ever have to face.
And James—you are a noble soul, a protector in every sense of the word. Your love for Sofia is steadfast and unwavering, and it fills me with so much pride. You've stood by her when I failed to do so, and for that, I am grateful beyond words.
You have my full support now. I will stand with you, no matter the cost. I am ashamed of how I let you down, but I hope, with time, I can show you how deeply I care and how willing I am to fight for you both.
Stay strong, my darlings. We'll be together again soon, and when we are, I promise things will be different. Until then, take care of each other and never forget how deeply you are loved.
With love,
Amber, Miranda, Baileywick, and Cedric
Sofia folded the letter carefully, her fingers trembling slightly as tears glistened in her eyes. She pressed the paper to her chest, her heart swelling with gratitude and love. At that moment, she felt the full weight of her family's support. Despite everything, she wasn't alone. She had them—they were her foundation, her strength.
Taking a deep breath, Sofia picked up the breakfast tray and headed upstairs to wake James. She entered the room quietly, setting the tray on the bedside table before leaning down to press a soft kiss on his cheek.
"James, wake up. I have something special for you," she whispered, her voice playful yet gentle.
James groaned softly, rolling over with a lazy smile. "Oh, come on, Sof… Just five more minutes. It's only 10:30 a.m."
Sofia laughed lightly. "James, come on. I made pancakes with chocolate—your favorite."
James's eyes blinked open at her words, and he sat up with a groggy smile. "Wait… I thought I felt you leave the bed earlier. Why didn't you wake me? I could've helped you."
Sofia's expression softened. "I wanted you to rest. You looked so peaceful—I just couldn't bring myself to wake you."
James reached for her, pulling her close. "I don't want you to overwork yourself, Sof. I just want you to be happy."
Before she could reply, James leaned in and stole a kiss. But as he began to pull away, Sofia wrapped her arms around his neck and deepened the kiss, holding him close. She wanted to feel his warmth, to keep him near, to savor every moment of their stolen time together.
In that moment, the worries of the world melted away. All that mattered was each other.
Love blossomed in the kingdom of Enchancia, bringing fleeting moments of light amid the shadows. For Sofia and James, it was a morning of quiet joy and connection. For Amber and Hugo, it was a morning of discovery, where hearts began to open to new possibilities.
But beyond the warmth of love and family, darkness brewed. The challenges that awaited would test their bonds, their courage, and their resolve. The rising storm had not yet passed—and for some, it was only beginning.
