Sofia the First

Sofia and James More than Meets the Eyes

Chapter 14 The revenge of Betrayal

The balance of power shifted continuously, like waves crashing against the shore. Decisions were made, alliances forged, and rivalries intensified in this ever-changing world. Sofia and James had begun to understand a vital truth: trust was rare. While they had found steadfast loyalty among some friends, they realized that ultimately, the greatest trust lay within themselves.

"There are too many false faces in the world," Sofia thought as she gazed out the window of their refuge. "Too many who pretend to be allies, yet are anything but. People like Clio—her mask hides her betrayal, and all we can do is pretend to believe her, all while staying vigilant. We must tread carefully in this world, where deception lurks in every shadow."

The road they traveled was long and fraught with obstacles. It was a path paved with trials, betrayals, and uncertainties, but they were bound together by their unwavering love. To Sofia and James, their relationship was the anchor that steadied them, the fire that ignited their resilience. Protecting their love was their singular goal, and they would endure anything to safeguard it.

Clio's Obsession

In stark contrast to the bond Sofia and James shared, Clio was consumed by bitterness. Her alliance with Axel was driven not by affection but by a burning need for revenge. The love she once harbored for James had warped into hatred—into a need to see him suffer.

To Clio, what James had done was the ultimate betrayal, her darkest hour. The jealousy she felt toward Sofia intensified her hatred. Clio had always seen herself as superior—a poised and admired princess, a natural choice for James's heart. To see Sofia succeed where she had failed was a blow to her pride and ego.

Sofia, in Clio's eyes, was an unlikely rival: reserved, shy, and undeserving of James's affections. Clio had been certain James would choose her. To hear that Sofia had captured James's heart was a devastation she struggled to comprehend.

She felt humiliated, believing James had lied to her, betrayed her, and discarded her for someone who, in her mind, wasn't even her equal. Axel's manipulation had capitalized on these emotions, turning them into weapons for his plan.

Axel's Deceptive Plan

Axel, ever calculating, was preparing his next move. He knew that the key to executing his plan lay in bringing Sofia and James back to the castle. To do so, he needed to deceive his father and King Roland into believing he had changed.

As the morning sunlight filtered through the castle's grand windows, Axel rehearsed the sincerity he needed to portray. His smirk lingered as he imagined the success of his plan. When the moment felt right, he walked confidently into the throne room.

"Good morning, Father. Good morning, King Roland," Axel said smoothly, his tone measured and respectful.

King Stefan looked up, his expression neutral. "Good morning, son."

King Roland offered a nod, curiosity flickering in his gaze. "Good morning, Prince Axel. How are you today?"

Axel clasped his hands together, his face carefully composed. "I'm well, thank you for asking. But I've come to speak with you about something important. I wanted to apologize for my actions yesterday—for the trouble I've caused. I've realized I was wrong in trying to force Sofia to be with me. I don't want to pressure her anymore. Instead, I want to help bring James and Sofia back to the castle."

King Roland's expression softened, though frustration lingered in his tone. "I've had enough of this, Stefan. I don't know what I was thinking when I agreed to this arrangement. We cannot force Sofia or James to love anyone—they deserve to make their own choices. If they love each other, we must support them."

King Stefan nodded slowly, his voice steady. "You're right, Roland. We've made mistakes, but it's time to correct them. We must find a way to bring them back safely."

Amber and Hugo's Suspicion

Outside the throne room, Amber, Hugo, Miranda, Baileywick, and Cedric stood quietly, listening to the conversation unfold. Their expressions were a mix of surprise and skepticism.

"It seems the cure worked," Baileywick murmured, his tone neutral.

Hugo nodded cautiously. "Perhaps. But what if Axel is only pretending to have changed? If this is just another ploy to lure Sofia and James back, we could be walking straight into his trap."

Amber folded her arms, her voice steady but tinged with doubt. "You're right, Hugo. We can't take his words at face value. If Axel hasn't truly changed, we need to ensure Sofia and James can escape again if things go wrong."

Miranda interjected thoughtfully. "We should send someone to inform them—someone who can ensure their safety and deliver the message discreetly."

Cedric stepped forward, his confidence unwavering. "Don't worry, Princess Amber. I'll send Wormwood with the letter. And if needed, Baileywick can devise a contingency plan to handle the worst-case scenario."

Amber nodded, her expression softening. "Thank you, Cedric. I'll write the letter myself."

Miranda turned to leave, her tone contemplative. "I'll check on Queen Caroline and update her on the situation."

A Summons to Action

Not long after, Roland summoned Baileywick and instructed him to bring Amber and Hugo to the throne room.

When Amber and Hugo arrived, Roland addressed them directly. "Amber, Hugo, we need your help to bring Sofia and James back. I believe you know where they are."

Hugo nodded. "We do."

King Stefan raised an eyebrow. "You know their location?"

Amber stepped forward, her tone firm and resolute. "Yes, he knows. Hugo was with me last night when we visited them. But I won't tell you their location—not until I'm certain that no harm will come to them, and that their love will be respected. After what Axel did yesterday, I need assurances."

Axel glanced at Amber, his voice subdued but deliberate. "Amber, I'm truly sorry for my actions. I was lost, but I've realized my mistakes and decided to leave them behind."

Roland nodded firmly. "Amber, you have my word as king—no harm will come to Sofia or James, and their love will be honored."

King Stefan added, his tone genuine. "You have my word as well."

Amber hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Very well. I won't reveal their location directly, but I'll send them a letter. This way, we can ensure their return while keeping their safety our priority."

Roland nodded in agreement. "We'll do things your way, Amber. Thank you for your cooperation."

Amber retreated to her chambers, her mind filled with thoughts of Sofia and James. She pulled out her writing desk, the blank parchment waiting for her words. As she began to write the letter that could change everything, the weight of the day's events lingered heavily.

The woods enveloped Sofia in their tranquil embrace, the soft crunch of leaves beneath her feet the only sound accompanying her. The sunlight filtered through the canopy above, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor, but even this peaceful solitude couldn't quiet the storm inside her. She needed time to think, away from the comforting noise of the house and the ever-watchful concern of her friends.

The guilt weighed heavily on her heart. She was surrounded by love and loyalty, but all she could see were the sacrifices her friends had made—sacrifices they shouldn't have had to make. It's my fault, she thought. If only I could do more to end all of this madness.

Her steps slowed as she came to a small clearing, her breath catching in her throat. The stillness here mirrored the chaos in her mind. She needed advice. She needed someone who could help her find clarity. In that moment, an idea struck her. Reaching into the folds of her cloak, she pulled out her magic mirror, its smooth surface shimmering faintly in the sunlight. There was one person she trusted to give her the guidance she desperately needed: Elizabeth.

The mirror's surface rippled as it activated, and soon Elizabeth's kind, familiar face appeared, her warm smile a balm to Sofia's frayed nerves.

"Hello, dear. What's happened? Are you alright?" Elizabeth asked, her voice laced with concern.

Sofia hesitated for a moment before responding, her voice soft but wavering. "Hello, Elizabeth. I'm fine… I just needed someone to talk to."

Elizabeth's expression softened, her tone reassuring. "Sofia, you can always rely on me. Tell me what's troubling you."

Sofia sighed, the weight of her thoughts spilling over as she began to speak. "A lot has happened recently. We were ambushed by soldiers the last time we went to the village—Axel's soldiers. We managed to escape, but our friends—Desmond, Vivian, and Lucinda—got caught up in this mess because of us. And James… he was hurt. It's all because of me." Her voice cracked slightly, but she pushed on. "To make things worse, we discovered that our father was under the influence of a potion. He's starting to recover now, but everything still feels so uncertain. I feel helpless, Elizabeth. I want to do more to fix things, but I don't know how. I even thought about going back to the castle…"

Her voice trailed off, and tears spilled down her cheeks, leaving a trail of despair in their wake.

Elizabeth's brow furrowed as she listened, her heart aching for the young princess. "Oh, Sofia, don't cry," she said gently, her voice soothing. "None of this is your fault. You've faced challenges far beyond your control, but you mustn't despair. And as for going back to the castle—please, don't even think about it right now. It's too risky. You have so much love and support around you. You have your friends, and above all, you have James. You need to face these challenges together, Sofia. That's what true love is—facing the joys and the struggles hand in hand, united."

Elizabeth's words felt like a lifeline, pulling Sofia out of the depths of her guilt. "You're right, Elizabeth," she said quietly, wiping her tears. "I do have James. And everything I've done, everything I'm doing… it's all for him. I just felt so guilty, so overwhelmed. But now… now I feel stronger. Thank you for reminding me."

Elizabeth smiled knowingly. "Sofia, you could have talked to James about this. He would have understood, and he would have done everything to support you. You need to let him in—you're a team now, and you need to share everything with each other."

A soft blush colored Sofia's cheeks as she thought about James. "You're right. I need to spend more time with him, to talk to him. He always makes me feel better, no matter what. I don't know how he does it, but I melt in his arms. His kisses make me feel… complete. He's kind, gentle, and everything I could ever want."

Elizabeth chuckled lightly. "That's love, dear. It's natural to feel that way about someone you truly care for."

Her tone grew slightly hurried as she glanced away. "I'm sorry, Sofia, but I need to attend to something now. We'll talk more later, alright?"

Sofia nodded, a warm smile spreading across her face. "Alright. Thank you, Elizabeth. I feel so much better now."

"Goodbye, dear. Take care," Elizabeth said as the mirror's surface rippled and dimmed.

As Sofia tucked the mirror away, she felt a renewed sense of purpose. Elizabeth's words had given her the clarity she needed. She turned and began walking back toward the house, her steps lighter than before. She had made up her mind—she needed to talk to James. She needed to feel his arms around her, to hear his calming voice.

But as Sofia approached the house, she noticed a figure departing from the doorway—it was Wormwood, Cedric's bird. Her curiosity piqued, she quickened her pace. When she reached the door, James was already holding a letter, the wax seal freshly broken. His expression was a mix of curiosity and caution as he read the letter aloud to her:

Dear Sofia and James,

I have good news—the cure worked! Father has asked me to invite you both back to the castle. Even Axel has apologized and promised to step aside. He says he won't stand in your way anymore.

That said, we've made a backup plan for your escape, just in case. I truly hope it won't be necessary, but it's better to be prepared. For now, I think the right move is for you to return to the castle and see how things unfold.

Don't bring all of your belongings back—there's a chance you may need to return to your refuge if things don't go as planned. We'll await your arrival.

Stay safe.

With love,
Amber

As James finished reading, he turned to Sofia, his brow furrowed.

"What do you think?" he asked, his tone cautious.

Sofia bit her lip, her mind racing. The letter was hopeful, but the risk was undeniable. Could they trust Axel's apology? Could they trust the safety of the castle?

Her heart swelled as she looked at James, knowing one thing for certain: whatever decision they made, they would face it together.

Lucinda glanced at James, her curiosity apparent. "James, what does the letter say?"

James folded the parchment carefully, his brow furrowed. "It's from Amber. She says things at the castle are changing—they want us to return. Father has accepted our relationship, and even Axel has apologized, claiming he won't interfere anymore. You're all no longer in exile."

The air inside Sofia and James's secluded house was thick with tension as James read Amber's letter aloud. The promise of a return to the castle hung in the air like a fragile thread, offering hope but leaving behind questions of trust and uncertainty.

Vivian's eyes brightened briefly, her voice hesitant. "Does that mean everything's back to normal?"

James shook his head, the doubt clear in his voice. "Maybe. But it's still not safe. I've thought it over, and Sofia and I will return to the castle. You all should go back to your homes. It's safer for you that way."

Lucinda straightened, determination flashing in her eyes. "James, we've been in this together from the start. We're not leaving now."

James softened slightly but maintained his resolve. "I appreciate that, Lucinda. But this fight isn't yours anymore. I can't keep putting you all at risk. If something goes wrong, it's better for us to be apart—for all of you to be safe."

Before James could say more, his gaze swept around the room, searching for the one person whose opinion mattered most to him. "Sofia… wait, where's Sofia?"

Vivian stepped forward to explain. "She went for a walk earlier. She needed some time alone."

James's concern flared. "What? And she didn't tell me? I need to find her—anything could happen." He started toward the door, but Lucinda stopped him gently.

"James, Sofia needed time to clear her head. She'll be back soon. Let's focus on the bigger issue—the letter from Amber."

James sighed, his frustration evident. "Alright. But listen carefully—Lucinda, you'll return to the village, and Vivian and Desmond should go back to their kingdoms. It's the safest move for all of you."

Desmond stepped closer, his voice resolute. "James, we've stood by you this whole time. We want to help—not leave."

James's expression softened, but his voice carried a hint of finality. "Desmond, I can't involve you all in this anymore. It's too dangerous. The risk is greater now than ever, and we need to separate for your safety. Please understand that."

The sound of the door opening drew everyone's attention. Sofia stepped inside, her cheeks tinged pink from the cool air, and she offered a small, apologetic smile. "Hey, I'm back."

James immediately rushed over to her, relief flooding his face. "Sofia, where were you? I was worried sick. How could you leave without telling me?" He pulled her into his arms, pressing a kiss to her forehead.

Sofia sighed softly, letting herself relax into his embrace. "I'm sorry, James. I needed time to think—to be alone for a while."

Lucinda, watching them, spoke up to bring Sofia into the discussion. "Alright, James. You should tell Sofia about the letter now."

Sofia tilted her head, curiosity flickering in her gaze. "What letter? What's going on?"

James held the parchment toward her, his voice steady. "We've received a letter from Amber. Father wants us to come back to the castle. Amber says Axel has apologized and promised not to interfere anymore. She suggests that we return. If things go wrong, Amber already has a backup plan for our escape."

Sofia scanned the letter, her brows knitting together in thought. "Amber really thinks it's safe?"

Vivian chimed in softly. "She does. But James has suggested we go back to our homes—he thinks it's better that way."

Sofia straightened, her tone firm. "No, Vivian. This fight isn't yours anymore. It's over for you. This is our battle now—mine and James's."

Lucinda started to interject, but Sofia's voice cut through. "I mean it, Lucinda. I can't involve you all in this mess any longer. You've already sacrificed enough for us. You deserve to go back to your lives."

Desmond nodded after a moment, his voice calm. "If that's what you've decided, Sofia, we'll respect your choice."

James turned to Lucinda, his tone steady. "Lucinda, can you teleport them back to their homes? Afterward, I think it's best for you to return to your own home as well."

Lucinda hesitated briefly before nodding. "Alright. If that's what you want."

As the group prepared to part ways, the weight of their goodbyes lingered in the air.

Lucinda managed a small smile. "I suppose this is goodbye for now. Take care of yourselves, Sofia and James."

James stepped forward, gratitude coloring his tone. "You too, Lucinda. Thank you for everything you've done."

Vivian added warmly, "Don't forget—you can always come to us if you need anything. You'll always have allies in us."

Desmond's voice carried quiet strength. "We'll stand ready to help if the worst happens. Remember that, Sofia."

Sofia's heart swelled as she looked at each of them. "Thank you all—for everything. We'll never forget your loyalty and kindness."

Lucinda completed her teleportation spell, and within moments, the house grew quiet again. Sofia and James stood together, the realization of their impending return to the castle sinking in.

The Journey to the Castle

As they climbed into the flying chariot, the silence between them felt heavier than before, weighed down by uncertainty and anticipation. For the first time in weeks, they were leaving exile, but the risks ahead were undeniable.

Sofia turned to James, breaking the silence. "So, James… we're finally going back."

James's gaze met hers, his expression steady. "We are. And I hope this is the last time anyone tries to stand in the way of our love."

Sofia hesitated before responding, her voice quiet. "But… what if it's not over? What if there's more waiting for us?"

James's hand tightened around hers as he replied firmly. "Sofia, I won't let anyone harm you. If things go wrong, we'll leave the castle forever. I'll protect you—always."

Sofia's lips curled into a soft smile. "James, you're so sweet. You deserve a little reward for that." Leaning forward, she pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.

James grinned, his tone playful. "I hope there are more rewards where that came from."

Sofia laughed lightly. "Don't be greedy, Jamie. You'll get another reward soon—but only because you're adorable."

James raised an eyebrow, amusement flickering in his eyes. "You're calling me 'Jamie' because it sounds funny, aren't you?"

Sofia smirked. "Maybe. Now, what's the plan when we arrive at the castle?"

James's expression grew thoughtful. "I'm not sure yet. I think we should follow Amber's lead—but honestly, that's what worries me most."

Sofia chuckled softly. "James, Amber's proven herself more than capable. Thanks to her, we escaped last time. Trust her—she knows what she's doing."

James's grin returned, teasing. "I know. I just wanted to rile you up a bit."

Sofia rolled her eyes, her tone turning serious. "James, now's not the time for jokes. We need to be prepared for anything."

James's voice softened but remained firm. "I'm always prepared, Sofia. As long as you're with me, nothing can go wrong."

Sofia's gaze turned toward the horizon as the castle appeared in the distance. Her heart quickened slightly. "There it is—the castle. We should be ready for anything… even the worst."

James placed his hand over hers, his tone steady. "Sofia, don't worry. Whatever happens, we'll face it together."

The chariot glided gracefully toward the castle, the familiar silhouette of its grand towers rising against the soft morning sky. Inside the royal garden, Amber and Hugo strolled hand in hand, enjoying the serene beauty of the day. The sun cast dappled light through the leaves of the ancient trees, and the scent of blooming flowers lingered in the warm air.

As Amber lifted her gaze to the horizon, she spotted the chariot approaching in the distance. Her heart quickened with excitement. "Hugo, they're here!" she exclaimed, releasing his hand and hurrying toward the castle. She quickly informed everyone, and together they moved to the courtyard to welcome Sofia and James home.

The moment the chariot touched down, the door opened to reveal Sofia and James. Their hands intertwined, their expressions were a mix of relief and resolve as they stepped out into the courtyard. Waiting for them were Amber, Hugo, Miranda, and Baileywick, each wearing smiles of warmth and reassurance.

Baileywick stepped forward, bowing slightly. "Princess Sofia, Prince James—it's truly a joy to have you back."

Miranda's face lit up as she approached them, her arms outstretched. "Sofia, James—I'm so happy to see you both." Her embrace was tender and full of emotion as she held them close.

James offered a soft smile, his voice steady but filled with gratitude. "Mom, it's good to be home."

Sofia's voice wavered slightly, carrying a quiet vulnerability. "Mom, I've missed you so much. I needed you."

Miranda pulled back slightly, guilt flickering in her eyes. "I want to apologize to you both. Cedric told me that the potion's effects may have clouded my judgment as well. That might explain why I acted the way I did. I should have supported you—especially during your time of need. You needed me, and I failed you."

Sofia reached for her mother's hand, her expression soft and full of understanding. "Mom, don't blame yourself. We know it wasn't truly you. I'm not angry—not at you, and not at Dad."

James nodded, his voice firm but calm. "Neither am I. But I do want to figure out who's responsible for everything that happened."

Miranda squeezed their hands reassuringly. "We'll find out together—I promise. For now, let's head to the throne room. Your father is waiting to see you both."

Amber stepped forward with a smile. "And don't worry—Axel left for the village with his friend."

James smirked slightly, his tone laced with skepticism. "I'm not worried about him. But I hope you've prepared another escape plan, just in case."

Miranda's laugh was light but confident. "Don't worry, James. Everything is under control. Nothing will happen to you."

Amber turned to Sofia, her expression turning apologetic. "Sofia, I wanted to let you know—Hildegard and Clio will be arriving soon. I need to prepare for their visit, but I'll come with you to the throne room for now."

Sofia offered her sister a reassuring smile. "It's alright, Amber. If Dad is truly back to his normal self, I don't think there's anything to worry about."

Miranda gestured toward the palace doors. "Let's not keep your father waiting. Come on."

Sofia and James walked hand in hand through the grand corridors of the castle, their fingers interlocked as a quiet statement of their unity. They both understood that this moment would set the tone for their return. As the heavy doors of the throne room creaked open, King Roland stood from his seat, his expression a mix of relief and regret.

"Sofia, James," Roland said, his voice carrying the weight of his apology. "I'm so glad you've returned. Before anything else, I need to apologize. Miranda told me everything about the potion, and I'm furious with myself for how I treated you. I should have supported your love, not stood in its way. I understand how precious it is to love someone, and I hope you can forgive me. I promise to find out who orchestrated all of this."

Sofia stepped forward, her voice soft but filled with emotion. "Dad, it's so good to see you back to normal." She moved to embrace him, holding him tightly.

James smiled faintly, his voice carrying a touch of humor. "There's the Dad I've been waiting to hear."

Roland nodded, his tone tinged with determination. "We'll talk more later, but for now, I need to be careful. King Stefan will be arriving shortly, and I don't want him to suspect anything about Axel's potential involvement. However, I can't shake the feeling that Axel is behind all of this."

James's expression darkened slightly. "I know he is. His soldiers ambushed us in the village."

Roland's face hardened, anger sparking in his eyes. "What?!"

Sofia stepped in quickly to explain. "We were ambushed by troops bearing Frankia's insignia. They attacked us, trying to capture us. James was injured in the process."

Roland's fury simmered just below the surface. "They'll pay for this—I'll make sure of it."

Miranda placed a calming hand on his arm, her voice steady. "Roland, now isn't the time to act in anger. We need more information first."

Amber nodded in agreement. "Dad, let's gather evidence before we take any action. Acting too quickly could backfire."

Hugo spoke with quiet conviction. "Your Majesty, with all due respect, Axel must be the one responsible for this. Perhaps we should inform my father."

Amber shook her head gently. "Not yet, Hugo. We need to be certain before we make such a bold move."

Roland exhaled deeply, his anger giving way to restraint. "Fine. We'll discuss this later. For now, let's keep our focus on the immediate situation."

Amber turned to Sofia and James, her smile warm but apologetic. "I'm sorry, but I need to take my leave. Hugo and I have to prepare for our guests' arrival. I'll join you again once they're settled."

Roland nodded. "You're excused. Go on."

Baileywick stepped forward, his tone composed. "Your Majesty, King Stefan has just arrived with Queen Caroline. We should prepare to greet them."

Roland straightened, his voice firm. "Everyone—let's be ready."

Moments later, King Stefan and Queen Caroline entered the throne room with regal poise.

Stefan's voice was warm as he addressed them. "Good day, Princess Sofia, Prince James. It's wonderful to finally see you both again."

Caroline's tone was equally heartfelt. "We were devastated to hear of your exile. Please accept our deepest apologies. In some ways, we feel responsible for what happened."

James bowed slightly, his voice respectful. "It's an honor to meet you, Your Majesties. And there's no need to apologize—things are being set right now."

Sofia nodded, her smile sincere. "We're grateful for your kindness. It means a lot to us."

Stefan's expression softened as he continued. "I know I once hoped for Axel and Sofia to be together, but it's clear now that she belongs with you, James. I won't stand in your way."

James's voice grew resolute, his love for Sofia shining through. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, even if you had stood in our way, it wouldn't have mattered. No one—not you, not my father, not Axel—can force Sofia to love someone she doesn't. I'll fight for her, no matter what it takes."

Stefan nodded approvingly. "I understand, James. Rest assured, Axel won't cause you any trouble."

Sofia's smile wavered slightly as she responded. "We hope so."

Caroline's tone softened as she asked, "You're both safe now, aren't you? Unharmed?"

Sofia smiled reassuringly. "Yes, we're safe now. Thank you for your concern."

Roland stepped forward, his voice lighter. "Stefan, Caroline—let's give the kids some time to rest. How about we go have some tea?"

Stefan nodded in agreement. "That sounds perfect."

As the room cleared, Sofia and James retreated upstairs to Sofia's chambers. James decided to take a bath to refresh himself, while Sofia changed into a soft, elegant dress. Feeling rejuvenated, Sofia made her way to the royal garden, where Amber and Hugo were setting up a charming tea party. Her heart lifted at the sight of them, knowing that despite all the challenges, they were surrounded by love and support.

Sofia s Thoughts

Sofia wandered through the castle's grand corridors, her mind abuzz with conflicting thoughts. The morning had unfolded like a dream—no longer in exile, finally free to embrace her relationship with James in the open. Everything is back to normal, isn't it? she thought, her heart buoyed by relief. We don't have to keep our love a secret anymore, and we don't have to run. It's over. We can finally be happy.

But doubt lingered in the corners of her mind, a shadow she couldn't shake. And yet… Axel. Why did he give up so easily? This doesn't feel like him. He was relentless, desperate to have me, and now he claims he's stepped aside? No. He has a plan—something subtle, something dangerous. Her fingers grazed the hem of her dress as she quickened her pace. Whatever it is, James and I will face it together. No matter what Axel tries, we won't be torn apart.

Determined to push away her worries, Sofia took a deep breath and let a small smile curl on her lips. For now, I need to relax. Let's see what Amber is doing—I could use a little break.

The royal garden bloomed in soft, fragrant beauty as Sofia stepped outside. The sun's golden rays filtered through the lush canopy, casting dappled light over the greenery. Amber and Hugo were busy arranging a tea party beneath the ancient oak tree at the garden's center. Delicate teacups and saucers gleamed atop a white linen tablecloth, and the gentle rustle of leaves played like a melody in the background.

Sofia greeted them warmly, offering her help. Together, they worked to set the final details of the tea party before taking a moment to breathe. Their laughter echoed lightly through the garden as they chatted about small, happy things.

Soon, Hildegard and Clio arrived at the castle gates. Amber excused herself to greet Hildegard, while Sofia and Hugo escorted Clio toward the garden.

"Hugo, I'm so thrilled for you and Amber," Clio said brightly, her smile radiant. "You're such a sweet couple."

Hugo chuckled, nodding. "Thank you, Clio. That means a lot."

Clio turned her gaze to Sofia, her tone soft and earnest. "Sofia, it's so good to see you back from exile. I was heartbroken when I heard about everything you went through. You and James deserve to be happy—I'm truly happy for you both."

Sofia returned the sentiment with a polite smile. "Thank you, Clio. And I'm sure there's someone out there for you, too."

Clio nodded, her lips curling into a faint smile. "Maybe." Without another word, she hurried ahead to join Amber and Hildegard.

Hugo's brows furrowed slightly as he turned to Sofia. "Sofia, how does Clio know about your exile—and about your relationship with James?

Sofia tilted her head in thought. "I'm not sure. Maybe Amber wrote her a letter?"

Hugo shook his head firmly. "No. I came here after you left, and I can tell you Amber hasn't sent any letters to Clio or Hildegard—not about this."

Sofia's expression darkened, unease creeping into her chest. "You might be right. Something does feel off. Or… maybe it's nothing. Either way, we should keep our eyes open. Agreed?"

Hugo nodded. "Agreed. I'll keep an eye out for anything unusual. As long as I can help, you have my support."

Sofia smiled softly. "Thank you, Hugo. Let's head back before anyone notices we're lagging behind."

In the garden, cheerful chatter filled the air as Sofia and Hugo rejoined the group.

"Amber, Hugo, you two are finally together," Hildegard gushed, her smile wide and genuine. "You're such a perfect match."

Clio chimed in, her tone saccharine. "Amber, you and Hugo are absolutely adorable together."

Amber blushed lightly, laughing. "Thank you both. I really couldn't be happier."

Their conversation was interrupted by Baileywick, who approached with a letter in hand. "Princess Sofia, a letter just arrived for you."

Sofia accepted the letter, breaking the seal as curiosity flickered in her eyes. She read it aloud:

Dear Sofia,

We wanted to meet with you in the village. There's something important we need to discuss, and we have big news to share. Please come to the village center as soon as you can.

See you soon,
Your friends,
Ruby and Jade

Sofia looked up, an apologetic smile on her face. "Sorry, everyone, but I have to leave. Ruby and Jade are waiting for me in the village."

Hildegard's smile dimmed slightly. "Oh, that's disappointing. We were hoping you'd stay and join us."

Sofia's tone remained warm and reassuring. "I'll come back as soon as I can. Amber, can you let James know not to worry? I'll be back before long."

Amber nodded. "Of course. Don't worry—I'll let him know when he comes down."

As Sofia arrived at the village, she scanned the square for Ruby and Jade but found no sign of them. Her brows knit together in confusion. A familiar voice broke her train of thought.

"Sofia? What are you doing here?"

She turned to find Lucinda approaching, her expression curious.

"Lucinda, I'm waiting for Ruby and Jade," Sofia explained. "They sent me a letter asking to meet them here."

Lucinda tilted her head, frowning. "That's strange—they're not in the village. I stopped by their houses earlier, and both of them are out of town until Friday."

Sofia's heart sank. "What? That can't be. Look, here's the letter—they specifically asked me to meet them here."

Lucinda took the letter, her gaze narrowing as she inspected it. "Sofia, this doesn't look like Ruby or Jade's handwriting. It's completely different."

Sofia's unease deepened. "If it wasn't them… then who wrote it?"

Lucinda's tone turned serious. "Let me check. I know a spell that can reveal the letter's true author."

Sofia nodded quickly. "Please, do it."

Lucinda held the letter aloft, reciting an incantation. "Ignatio-fasti!" The parchment shimmered before revealing a single name: Clio.

Sofia's breath hitched. "Clio? But why? What could she want? And how does she know about my relationship—and our exile? This doesn't make sense."

Lucinda's concern mirrored Sofia's. "Do you want me to come back to the castle with you? You shouldn't face this alone."

Sofia shook her head, determination hardening her gaze. "No, it's alright, Lucinda. I need to handle this. But thank you—I'll see you soon."

Without another moment's hesitation, Sofia turned and hurried back to the castle, her thoughts racing as she prepared herself for whatever lay ahead.

Sofia's Inner Conflict

Why would Clio want me away from the castle? Sofia's thoughts raced as she hurried back, her heart pounding. What could she be trying to accomplish? A wave of realization struck her, and her breath caught in her throat. Does she want James? Is this her way of trying to take him away from me?

Her footsteps quickened. Something strange is happening. None of this adds up—the letter, her behavior… I need to get back to James now.

Clio's Manipulation

Meanwhile, back at the castle, James and Clio strolled leisurely through the blooming garden. The air was crisp, scented with roses and lavender, a perfect backdrop for a seemingly innocent conversation.

"So, James, how have you been?" Clio asked, her tone light but laced with intent. "It's been so long since we've had a proper chat."

James offered her a polite smile, his gaze resting on the path ahead. "I've been fine. Things were tough for a while, but Sofia and I managed to get through it."

Clio's expression softened with feigned sympathy. "I heard about your exile. That must have been awful—I'm so sorry you had to go through that. But it's good to see that everything is back to normal now."

James nodded, his voice steady. "It is. I'm just grateful we can finally move on."

But as Clio glanced toward the gates, a flicker of something unreadable crossed her face. She noticed the carriage pulling into the courtyard—Sofia was back. A glint of calculation lit her eyes.

"James, what's that over there?" Clio asked, pointing toward a flowering vine to draw his attention.

Before James could respond, Clio stepped closer and, without warning, leaned in to kiss him. James's eyes widened in shock as he froze, unprepared for the suddenness of her action. The kiss lasted only a few seconds before he pulled away sharply.

"Clio, stop—what are you doing?" James exclaimed, his tone firm but filled with confusion.

However, the damage had already been done. Behind them stood Sofia, her expression a mixture of hurt and disbelief. She didn't wait for an explanation—she turned on her heel and stormed toward the other end of the garden.

The Confrontation

James's heart sank as he watched Sofia leave. Panic and guilt surged through him as he hurried after her, catching up just before she entered the palace. Gently, he grabbed her hand.

"Sofia, please—stop! Let me explain."

Sofia turned to him, her eyes blazing with anger and pain. "Explain what, James? That I was gone for 30 minutes, and you're already kissing someone else?!"

James shook his head frantically, his voice desperate. "No, Sofia, it wasn't me! It was Clio—I didn't want it. I swear!"

Sofia's voice quivered, her anger tinged with sadness. "James, if you didn't want it, you would have stopped it immediately. I thought you loved me."

His tone softened as he took a step closer. "I do love you, Sofia. More than anything. Please, you have to trust me."

But Sofia pulled her hand away, her gaze hardening. "I wanted you, James. But not like this."

The words hit James like a dagger as she walked away, her figure disappearing into the palace. He stood frozen, his world crumbling around him.

Amber's Support

Sofia stormed into Amber's chambers, tears streaming down her face. Amber, startled by her abrupt entrance, immediately rushed to her side.

"Sofia, what happened?" Amber asked, wrapping her arms around her sister.

Sofia's voice cracked as she replied. "It's over. Clio took him from me."

Amber pulled back slightly, confusion etched across her face. "What do you mean? What happened?"

"I saw them," Sofia sobbed. "Clio kissed James."

Amber frowned, trying to piece everything together. "Did you talk to them? Did James explain?"

Sofia nodded, her tone bitter. "He tried to make excuses, but how could he let it happen? After everything we've been through…"

Amber's voice turned firm as she spoke. "Sofia, listen to me. Maybe James didn't want the kiss. Did he say that?"

Sofia hesitated, the anger in her voice faltering. "He said it wasn't him… that he didn't want it."

Amber nodded knowingly. "Then give him a chance to prove it. I have an idea."

Sofia's brows knitted together. "What kind of idea?"

"I'll arrange a setup in the garden," Amber explained. "James and Clio will sit together at one table, and we'll watch from nearby. If James truly loves you, he won't entertain Clio for long."

Sofia hesitated, unsure. "Amber, I don't know if I can—"

Amber placed a hand on her shoulder, her tone reassuring. "Trust me, Sofia. You'll see the truth."

Hugo's Revelation

The door creaked open, and Hugo entered the room with an urgent expression.

"Amber, I found something you need to know," he announced.

Amber turned to him quickly. "What is it, Hugo?"

Hugo paused as he noticed Sofia's tear-streaked face. Concern flashed across his features. "Sofia, what's wrong? What happened?"

Sofia exhaled shakily. "Clio kissed James. She also sent me a fake letter to lure me out of the castle. I think she's trying to break us apart."

Hugo's jaw tightened. "That makes sense. I intercepted letters from Axel to Clio. He's been using her to execute his plans. Bringing you and James back was part of his strategy."

Amber's eyes narrowed, anger flashing through them. "I knew Axel was behind this. We need to put a stop to it."

The Plan in Action

An hour later, everything was ready. The royal garden was transformed into a stage for Amber's plan. James sat across from Clio, while Sofia was stationed with Axel at a nearby table. Unbeknownst to Clio, Amber had fed her a false promise of helping her win James, ensuring she'd stay in place.

James's tone was firm as he addressed Clio. "Clio, I want to make one thing clear. I love Sofia. That kiss earlier was completely unwelcome. Why are you doing this?"

Clio fidgeted uncomfortably, her gaze falling to the table. "I'm sorry, James. I just… I've always cared about you. But I see now that your heart belongs to her."

At the adjacent table, Sofia engaged Axel cautiously.

"Axel, thank you for apologizing earlier," she said, her tone calm but guarded.

Axel nodded. "It was the least I could do. I've made mistakes—I didn't mean for things to get this far."

They shared a polite laugh, but James's gaze flicked to their table, tension building as he watched Axel lean in slightly, placing a hand over Sofia's.

Something inside James snapped. He stood abruptly, striding toward Sofia's table with purpose.

Sofia noticed him approaching and rose to meet him, her expression unreadable. Without hesitation, James wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close.

"Sofia, I'm sorry," he whispered. "I won't let anyone come between us again."

Her eyes softened as she looked up at him. "James, I still love you."

Their lips met in a passionate kiss, one filled with all the emotion and longing that had been brewing between them. It was a kiss of reconciliation, of victory over the forces that had tried to tear them apart. Their love had endured—and it had triumphed.

That kiss wasn't just an ordinary moment of affection—it was a defiant act of love, a forceful reclamation of everything Sofia and James had fought so hard to protect. After what felt like an eternity of separation, even though it had only been an hour, this kiss embodied their longing, their desperation, and their unyielding devotion. Time seemed to stand still as the intensity of their connection filled the space between them.

It was more than a kiss; it was the revival of their bond, a love that had been tested in the crucible of betrayal but had emerged unscathed—stronger, deeper, and more resilient than ever. It wasn't just about the physical closeness—it was the unspoken promise that no matter what schemes had been set against them, no matter what darkness had tried to consume their love, they would remain unbreakable.

In that moment, they weren't just affirming their love; they were vanquishing doubt, fear, and the shadows of Axel and Clio's manipulations. It was a triumph—pure and undeniable. Their kiss shattered the chains of distrust and solidified their unity, proving that love, when true and unwavering, could withstand even the most sinister plots.

The garden around them seemed to breathe in relief, as though nature itself bore witness to their victory. The flowers swayed gently in the breeze, the sunlight filtering softly through the leaves, casting a golden glow over them as if to celebrate their triumph. They had resisted, they had fought, and they had prevailed. Their love had conquered betrayal, outlasted schemes, and stood tall against forces designed to tear them apart.

This was not just a resolution; it was a new beginning. A testament to their unyielding faith in one another. Sofia and James knew, in that moment, that no matter what lay ahead, their bond would endure. Together, they could face anything the world threw at them, and their love would continue to shine—resilient, radiant, and eternal.
