The sun cast a warm glow over Violet City as Boe, Rev, and Zane approached the towering structure of the Violet City Gym. The building stood tall like a pagoda, its layered wooden tiers stacked high, with golden shingles that shimmered in the light. Elegant carvings of bird Pokémon adorned the massive wooden doors, and a grand stone relief of a Pidgeot, wings outstretched, loomed above the entrance, watching over challengers with a commanding presence.
Boe grinned, practically bouncing on his heels. "Our first Gym battle in Johto! Man, I can't wait to see what Falkner's got."
Zane, arms crossed, exhaled slowly, his eyes locked on the towering structure. "Flying-types are fast. If we're not careful, we'll get overwhelmed."
Rev smirked, hands casually in his pockets. "Relax. We've handled Gyms before. This won't be any different."
The trio stepped forward, pushing open the heavy doors. Inside, the Gym had an air of quiet reverence. The ground level was spacious, the polished wooden floor reflecting the warm glow of hanging lanterns. The scent of aged timber filled the air, and the occasional flutter of wings echoed above. Trainers were scattered throughout, engaged in practice battles, their Flying-type Pokémon swooping through the air with grace and speed.
At the far end of the room, a large wooden platform rested against the back wall, its carved patterns resembling gusts of wind. Thick ropes and a pulley system extended upward, leading to the second level, where Falkner awaited.
Before they could step onto the platform, a Gym attendant in a crisp blue uniform stepped forward, holding up a hand. "Only one challenger may head up at a time," she informed them. "You'll have to take turns."
Boe, Zane, and Rev exchanged glances.
"Well, I'm going first," Boe said confidently, stepping toward the platform.
"Not so fast," Zane cut in. "We should decide fairly."
Rev smirked. "Guess that means we settle this the usual way."
Without another word, all three of them raised a fist in unison. "Fire… Grass… Water… SHOOT!"
Boe's hand remained in a closed fist, Fire.
Zane's hand flattened out, Grass.
Rev extended two fingers, Grass.
Boe's fire scorched Zane's grass, giving him the victory. He pumped his fist triumphantly. "Yes! Looks like I'm up first!"
Zane shrugged. "Fair enough."
Rev gave a lazy thumbs-up. "Good luck, don't get blown off the platform."
Boe stepped onto the platform first, gripping the railing as the mechanism creaked to life. Zane and Rev followed, the lift smoothly ascending toward the open-air battlefield above. As they reached the top, a rush of fresh air greeted them, carrying the sound of wings flapping in the distance. The battlefield was a wide wooden arena, open to the sky, allowing the wind to swirl freely around them.
Standing at the center was Falkner. His stance was confident, his piercing blue eyes sharp like a hawk's as he studied them. His deep blue jacket billowed slightly in the breeze, the golden accents on his sleeves reflecting the sunlight. Dark hair, parted down the middle, framed his face, with a few loose strands falling over his forehead. Despite his composed demeanor, there was a clear fire in his gaze—a passion for battle and an unwavering pride in his Pokémon.
He stepped forward, his voice calm but firm.
"I'm Falkner, the Violet Pokémon Gym Leader! People say you can clip Flying-type Pokémon's wings with a jolt of electricity... I won't allow such insults to bird Pokémon! I'll show you the real power of the magnificent bird Pokémon!"
Boe grinned, reaching for Shan's Poké Ball. "Then show me what you've got!"
Boe stood firm on the wooden battlefield, gripping Shan's Poké Ball tightly. The wind whipped through the open-air arena, sending a refreshing chill through the air. Falkner stood across from him, unwavering and composed, his cape-like jacket billowing behind him.
"I'll start things off!" Boe called, tossing his Poké Ball into the air. "Let's go, Shan!"
In a flash of light, Shan the Sentret landed on the battlefield, her bushy tail twitching as she sized up the opponent.
Falkner smirked and released his own Pokémon. "Hoothoot, take flight!"
The small, round owl appeared, its red eyes glowing slightly as it balanced effortlessly on one leg. It flapped its tiny wings, hovering just above the ground, awaiting its trainer's command.
Boe clenched his fist. He wanted to start strong. "Shan, Quick Attack!"
Shan bolted forward in a blur of motion, her small form zipping across the battlefield before slamming into Hoothoot's side. The owl Pokémon squawked but remained steady, quickly retaliating.
"Echoed Voice!" Falkner commanded.
Hoothoot puffed out its chest and let out a resonating cry. The sound waves rippled through the air, striking Shan and sending her tumbling backward. She rolled to a stop, digging her claws into the wooden floor for balance.
"You okay, Shan?" Boe asked.
Shan twitched her ears and let out a determined squeak, then darted forward again.
"Scratch!"
She swiped her claws across Hoothoot's chest, making the owl flinch.
"Again! Quick Attack before it can counter!"
Shan vanished in a blur and struck Hoothoot before it could react. The owl wobbled slightly, trying to recover, but Falkner was already giving the next order.
"Echoed Voice, once more!"
The second blast of sound was even stronger than before, sending Shan skidding across the floor. She trembled as she pushed herself up, panting heavily.
Boe could tell she was barely holding on. He had to finish this now.
"Shan, one last Quick Attack!"
With a desperate burst of speed, Shan lunged forward. She struck Hoothoot hard—harder than before—a perfectly placed critical hit.
Hoothoot staggered, its wings twitching weakly before it collapsed.
Falkner's expression didn't falter as he recalled his Pokémon. "Not bad, but the wind is finally with us." He pulled out his next Poké Ball. "Go, Pidgeotto!"
A burst of light revealed a much larger bird Pokémon. Pidgeotto let out a fierce cry, flaring its wings and ruffling its chest feathers as it took its position above the battlefield.
Boe clenched his jaw. "We're not backing down! Quick Attack, Shan!"
Shan, still breathing heavily, shot forward. She struck Pidgeotto, but the bird barely flinched. Instead, it twisted in the air, kicking up clumps of dirt from the battlefield.
"Mud-Slap!"
A wave of mud splattered across Shan's face, making her cry out as she tumbled backward. She struggled to stand, but the hit had been too much.
Boe sighed and pulled out her Poké Ball. "You did great, Shan. Take a rest."
Now it was Jolee's turn. He grabbed her Poké Ball and tossed it forward. "Jolee, let's do this!"
The Totodile landed on the battlefield with an eager grin, bouncing on her feet.
"Scary Face!" Boe ordered.
Jolee's expression contorted into something truly menacing, her jaw stretching wide as she let out a deep, guttural hiss. Pidgeotto flinched mid-air, hesitating for just a moment.
Falkner wasn't rattled. "Gust!"
Pidgeotto flapped its wings furiously, whipping up a small tornado that engulfed Jolee. She was tossed around inside the swirling winds before tumbling onto her back. But despite the hit, she quickly pushed herself up, still grinning.
Boe smirked. "Time for some payback. Bite!"
Jolee lunged forward, clamping her powerful jaws onto Pidgeotto's wing. The bird Pokémon screeched, flapping wildly as it tried to shake her off.
Falkner's eyes narrowed. "We can still fly!"
Pidgeotto gave a powerful flap, finally tossing Jolee off. The moment it regained control, it swooped low and attempted another Mud-Slap.
"Dodge it!" Boe called.
Jolee leaped to the side, avoiding the attack.
"Finish this! Water Gun!"
Jolee inhaled deeply before blasting a high-pressure stream of water straight at Pidgeotto. The force of the attack sent the bird spiraling backward before it crashed onto the floor, unconscious.
A tense silence hung in the air before Falkner sighed and returned his Pokémon. "I understand… I'll bow out gracefully."
Boe pumped his fist. "We did it, Jolee!"
The Totodile spun in a little victory dance before leaping into Boe's arms.
Falkner approached the center of the battlefield, his expression calm despite the loss. He extended his hand, holding a small badge shaped like a pair of outstretched wings.
"…For pity's sake! My dad's cherished bird Pokémon… But a defeat is a defeat," he admitted. "All right. Take this official Pokémon League Badge. This one is the Zephyr Badge."
Boe took the badge, holding it up to the light.
"With that Badge, Pokémon, including traded Pokémon up to Level 20, will obey you without question. It also enables you to use the hidden move Rock Smash anytime outside of battle," Falkner continued. "By using a TM, a Pokémon will instantly learn a new move. Think before you act—a TM can be used only once. TM51 contains Roost. It restores half the max HP."
Boe took the TM and nodded. "Thanks, Falkner."
Falkner folded his arms. "There are Pokémon Gyms in cities and towns ahead. Make good use of them! As for your next move… I would suggest Azalea Town."
As Boe stepped onto the wooden platform, clutching his newly earned Zephyr Badge, he took a deep breath. The thrill of victory still buzzed in his chest, and Jolee, his Totodile, bounced excitedly beside him. With a slight jolt, the platform began its slow descent back to the ground level of the Gym.
The moment his feet touched the floor, Rev and Zane rushed over to greet him.
"You did it!" Rev said, grinning as he clapped Boe on the back.
"That was awesome," Zane added, nodding in approval. "You made it look easy."
Boe smirked, rubbing the back of his head. "I wouldn't say easy. Falkner's tough, and those birds can hit hard. But we pulled through." He knelt down to pat Jolee's head. "Right, girl?"
Jolee let out a happy cry, spinning in a circle.
Rev cracked his knuckles. "Well, guess that means it's my turn." He motioned toward Zane. "But first… Fire, Grass, Water?"
Zane nodded. "Yeah, let's settle this."
The two faced off, hands at the ready. They counted down—three, two, one—and threw their choices.
Rev's fingers formed a flickering flame, while Zane's hand took the shape of a sprouting leaf.
Rev grinned. "Fire beats Grass. Looks like I'm up next."
Zane let out a sigh. "Dang it. Guess I'm last."
Rev gave a mock salute. "Wish me luck, boys." With that, he stepped onto the platform, arms crossed casually as it lifted him toward the battlefield above.
As soon as he was gone, Boe and Zane wandered over to a nearby bench, sitting down to wait. The wooden floor beneath them creaked slightly as the wind outside rattled against the tall tower walls.
"So," Zane said after a beat, leaning back with his arms crossed, "any advice?"
Boe smirked. "Hoping for some insider info, huh?"
Zane shrugged. "Not exactly. I want to figure things out myself, but… a little strategy talk wouldn't hurt."
Boe nodded, appreciating the mindset. "Alright, well… Falkner's a flying-type specialist, obviously. Speed is gonna be a big factor. You don't want to get caught off guard."
Zane listened intently. "Right. So I should focus on keeping the pressure up."
"Exactly," Boe confirmed. "And be ready for a few tricks. Just because they're birds doesn't mean they only use aerial attacks." He smirked but kept quiet about the Mud-Slap. He didn't want to spoil the surprise.
Zane nodded thoughtfully. "Got it."
A few minutes later, the platform hummed as it descended once more.
Rev stepped off, looking absolutely elated. "And that's how it's done, gentlemen!" He held up his own Zephyr Badge, flashing it proudly. "Another victory for the record books."
Boe chuckled. "Nice going. How'd it go?"
Rev crossed his arms, smirking. "Not gonna lie, I had to get creative, but my team pulled through. Hoothoot gave me more trouble than I expected, but once I got past it, Pidgeotto wasn't as bad."
Boe nodded. "Yeah, that Hoothoot hits harder than it looks."
Rev leaned back against the bench, watching as Zane stood up and stretched. "Alright, Zane, your turn to shine."
Zane rolled his shoulders and took a deep breath. "Time to make it count." He stepped onto the platform, giving them a final nod before being lifted up to face Falkner.
As soon as he was gone, Rev plopped down next to Boe. "Man, what a rush. I forgot how good it feels to win a Gym battle."
Boe chuckled. "Same. Feels different in Johto, though. Like a fresh start."
Rev nodded. "Yeah. And Falkner's not bad—he's got that whole 'calm and collected' thing going on. Makes him feel like a real test instead of just some roadblock."
Boe smirked. "I like how he gets defensive about flying types. Like, dude, nobody's actually insulting your birds."
Rev laughed. "Right? I was like, 'Chill, man. I just wanna battle.'"
They continued swapping battle stories, trading thoughts on strategy and reliving their favorite moments. Time passed quickly, and before they knew it, the platform was descending once more.
Zane stepped off, holding up his Zephyr Badge with a triumphant grin. "Boom. That's how it's done."
Rev and Boe both cheered, standing up to congratulate him.
"Nice work, dude!" Rev said.
Boe gave him a fist bump. "Told you you'd figure it out."
Zane smirked. "Yeah, yeah. You gave me just enough to keep me on my toes. I respect it."
The three of them stood in the middle of the Gym, looking at their badges together.
Rev grinned. "One badge down. Seven to go."
Zane crossed his arms. "Guess we better get moving."
As Boe, Rev, and Zane stepped out of the Violet City Gym, the cool evening air greeted them. The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the city in hues of deep orange and purple. Street lamps flickered to life, their soft glow illuminating the cobblestone paths. A light breeze rustled through the trees, carrying with it the distant chirps of nocturnal Pokémon waking up for the night.
Boe stretched his arms above his head, still riding the high of his victory. "Man, that felt good."
Rev smirked, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "Nothing beats that post-Gym win feeling."
Zane, who had been quiet for a moment, finally let out a relieved sigh. "I'm just glad I didn't choke under the pressure." He looked down at his newly earned Zephyr Badge, its polished surface gleaming under the streetlights. "But that was intense."
Boe grinned. "Told you it wouldn't be easy."
Rev's stomach growled loudly, cutting through the night air. He groaned dramatically, placing a hand on his gut. "Alright, celebrations are great and all, but I need food. Now."
Boe chuckled. "Agreed. We need to celebrate properly."
Zane nodded. "Any ideas?"
Rev glanced around before pointing down the street. "There's gotta be a good spot around here. Let's just pick a place that looks good."
After a short walk through the city, they stumbled upon a cozy-looking restaurant nestled between two larger buildings. A wooden sign above the entrance read "The Roost", fittingly themed for a city with a Flying-type Gym. Warm light spilled from the windows, and the scent of grilled food and fresh bread drifted through the air, making their mouths water.
Boe smirked. "I think we found our spot."
The three walked in, greeted by the welcoming chatter of other diners and the clinking of plates and glasses. The place had a rustic charm, with wooden beams lining the ceiling and paintings of Flying-type Pokémon decorating the walls. A few trainers sat at tables, some polishing their badges just as they had done moments ago.
A waitress approached them with a friendly smile. "Welcome to The Roost! Grabbing a late dinner?"
Rev nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely. We just won our first Johto Gym Badges."
The waitress's eyes lit up. "Well, congratulations! That's worth celebrating. Follow me—I'll get you guys a good spot."
She led them to a booth near the window, giving them a perfect view of the city streets outside. The group slid into their seats, already eyeing the menus.
Boe leaned back with a satisfied grin. "This is perfect. First badge down, a good meal ahead… I'd say today was a success."
Zane smirked. "Here's hoping the rest of Johto goes this well."
Rev picked up his menu, eyes scanning the options. "Yeah, but first things first—let's eat."
With their badges in hand and their spirits high, the trio settled in, ready to enjoy a well-earned meal before the journey continued.
