Boe gently cradled Deku, the newly hatched Togepi, in his arms as the excitement of the Game Corner buzzed around him. Despite the neon lights and flashing slot machines, his focus was entirely on the tiny Pokémon nestled against his chest. Deku let out a soft, cheerful "Toge-pii!" and blinked its round black eyes up at him, radiating pure innocence.
Boe smiled. "I think that's enough excitement for one night. I'm gonna head back to the Pokémon Center and get Deku checked out."
Rev, still leaning casually against a slot machine, grinned. "Already calling it? We just got here."
Zane smirked, tossing a coin in his hand. "Yeah, but he's got an excuse. Baby Pokémon and all."
Boe rolled his eyes but didn't argue. "You guys have fun. I'll see you back at the Center."
With that, he turned toward the exit, stepping into the cool Goldenrod City night. The streets were still alive with people, the towering skyscrapers casting long shadows under the glow of streetlamps. The Pokémon Center wasn't far from the Game Corner, so he made his way there quickly, the automatic glass doors sliding open as he stepped inside.
The lobby was quieter than before, with only a few trainers lounging in the seating area. Nurse Joy stood at the counter, her ever-present warm smile in place. As soon as she noticed the tiny Pokémon in Boe's arms, her eyes lit up.
"Oh my, looks like someone hatched a new friend!" she said kindly.
Boe nodded, placing Deku carefully on the counter. "Yeah, it happened at the Game Corner. I just wanted to make sure he's healthy."
Nurse Joy chuckled as she gently picked up the Togepi, who chirped happily and wiggled its little arms. "Well, aren't you a lively one?" She placed Deku on a soft mat and ran a quick checkup, as Chansey waddled over with a clipboard, assisting in the process.
Boe watched anxiously as Nurse Joy examined Deku's tiny limbs, checked its heartbeat, and measured its energy levels with a small scanner. After a few moments, she nodded in approval.
"Well, everything looks great! This Togepi is completely healthy and full of energy. You're off to a wonderful start together."
Boe exhaled in relief. "That's good to hear. Thanks, Nurse Joy."
She smiled warmly. "No problem at all! Just make sure to take good care of it. Baby Pokémon need lots of love and attention."
Boe carefully picked up Deku again. The small Pokémon nuzzled into his chest, already trusting its new trainer completely.
"I think we'll get along just fine," Boe said, his voice warm.
Back at the Pokémon Center Room
Boe stepped into his room, adjusting to the lavish accommodations of the Pokémon Center. Unlike the simpler rooms from previous towns, this one felt almost like a hotel suite. A large, soft bed rested against the far wall, draped in crisp, white sheets. A nightstand with a charging station for Poké Balls sat beside it. A small wooden desk faced the window, which offered a breathtaking view of the Goldenrod skyline, the city lights twinkling like stars.
He placed Deku gently onto the bed before unhooking his other Poké Balls from his belt. "Alright, everyone. Time to meet the new member of the team."
With a flick of his wrist, he released his Pokémon.
Shan the Furret stretched out with a lazy yawn before immediately circling Boe's feet and curling up comfortably. Jolee the Croconaw hopped onto the bed, blinking in confusion at the tiny Togepi. Cementoss the Geodude settled near the corner of the room, arms crossed in its usual relaxed stance.
Deku let out a curious "Toge?" as it looked up at its new teammates.
Jolee grinned and leaned in closer. Deku poked Jolee's snout with one tiny hand, causing the Croconaw to chuckle. Shan, now fully awake, hopped onto the bed and sniffed at the little Pokémon before letting out an approving purr. Cementoss merely grunted but seemed content with the new addition.
Boe smiled as he watched the interactions. "Looks like everyone's getting along just fine."
Deku beamed with joy, flapping its tiny arms. It was surrounded by strong Pokémon, but it didn't seem intimidated in the slightest.
As the night grew late, Boe laid back on his bed, resting his head on the pillow. Deku crawled onto his chest, curling up into a tiny ball. Shan snuggled up next to him as usual, and the rest of his Pokémon settled down nearby, each of them finding their own comfortable spot in the room.
With his newest team member safely in his care and his Pokémon resting peacefully, Boe let out a deep breath.
Tomorrow, they would explore Goldenrod City. But for now…
He let his eyes close, feeling warmth from the Pokémon surrounding him.
For the first time in a long time, he felt truly at home.
The warm glow of morning sun filtered through the Goldenrod Pokémon Center's wide windows, casting golden light onto the sleek tile floor. The city outside was already alive with movement—cars rolling down the streets, trainers walking side by side with their Pokémon, and the distant sound of voices blending together in a steady hum.
Boe stretched as he stepped out of his room, feeling well-rested after the previous night's events. Togepi—Deku—was nestled in his arms, still snoozing softly. His other Pokémon were back in their Poké Balls, though he had a feeling Shan wouldn't stay inside for long.
As he made his way to the lobby, Zane and Rev were already waiting by the entrance, though they looked far less energized.
Zane let out a loud yawn, rubbing his eyes. His Hoothoot sat perched on his shoulder, looking far more awake than its trainer. Rev leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his Quilava, Torch, standing at his feet, flames barely flickering.
"You guys look terrible," Boe smirked, adjusting his bag over his shoulder.
Rev groaned. "I don't know what time we got back last night, but my brain still feels like it's in the Game Corner."
Zane yawned again, stretching. "Too many flashing lights. Too much noise. And we didn't even win anything."
Boe chuckled. "Sounds like you two need coffee."
Rev perked up slightly. "Now that is an idea I can get behind."
"Yeah," Zane muttered. "Let's find a café before I collapse."
With a unanimous agreement that caffeine was a necessity, the trio stepped out into the bustling Goldenrod morning.
They didn't have to walk far before they stumbled upon a cozy café nestled between two larger buildings. Its wooden sign, engraved with a steaming cup and a Poké Ball, read:
"The Golden Cup – Best Coffee in Johto!"
The scent of rich, roasted coffee beans drifted out the open door, inviting them inside. The interior was warm and welcoming, with mahogany furniture, golden-hued walls, and small potted plants sitting on each table. The soft hum of conversation mixed with the occasional hiss of a steaming espresso machine.
A few trainers sat by the windows, sipping drinks while their Pokémon lounged at their feet. A young barista in a crisp brown apron greeted them with a bright smile.
"Welcome to The Golden Cup! What can I get for you?"
After scanning the chalkboard menu above the counter, the trio placed their orders—Boe got a simple black coffee, Zane ordered something loaded with cream and sugar, and Rev went for an extra-strong espresso.
As they waited, Boe glanced over at Zane, who was digging into his bag.
"What are you looking for?" Boe asked.
"This!" Zane pulled out a pamphlet he had grabbed from the Pokémon Center the day before, unfolding it on the table. "I figured since we're in the biggest city in Johto, we should see what there is to do."
Rev leaned in, curious. "Anything interesting?"
Zane skimmed the list. "Let's see… Goldenrod Department Store—biggest in the region. Underground Tunnel—apparently there's shops, trainers, and some kind of mystery vendor down there. Radio Tower—looks like they do live shows and raffles. And then… huh."
"Huh what?" Boe asked, taking a sip of his coffee.
Zane tapped a part of the pamphlet. "There's a Bug Catching Contest happening tomorrow in National Park."
Rev raised an eyebrow. "A contest?"
Zane nodded. "Yeah, it says here trainers compete to catch the strongest Bug-type Pokémon in a limited amount of time. They provide special Sport Balls, and at the end, judges decide the winner based on the Pokémon caught. First place gets a prize."
Boe rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "That actually sounds kind of fun."
"Yeah, but it's Bug-types," Rev muttered, taking a sip of his espresso. "Not exactly my thing."
Zane shrugged. "A win is a win. Could be worth checking out."
Boe grinned. "I think I'll enter. Even if I don't win, I'd love to see what kind of Pokémon are out there."
Rev rolled his eyes. "Of course you would."
Boe ignored him, leaning forward. "Okay, so what do we do today? The Department Store could be good for stocking up, and the Underground Tunnel sounds interesting."
"Don't forget the Gym," Rev added, stirring his espresso.
Boe perked up. "Oh, right. I'm ready for a challenge. What do you think, Zane?"
Zane stretched, setting the pamphlet aside. "Let's hit up the Department Store first. I'd like to do some shopping first. Then we can head to the gym for sure."
The three of them laughed and settled into the cozy café, planning their day and future adventures in Goldenrod City.
With their energy restored by The Golden Cup's coffee, the trio stepped back onto the bustling streets of Goldenrod City. The city hummed with life—bicycles zipped past, trainers strolled alongside their Pokémon, and street vendors called out their specials to the passing crowds. Bright neon signs and towering billboards loomed overhead, advertising everything from Poké Balls to the latest Pokégear models.
Boe inhaled deeply, letting the rich aroma of city life settle in. The scent of grilled food and fresh bread mingled with the usual urban blend of car exhaust and warm pavement. It was a stark contrast to the quieter towns they'd visited so far, and it reminded him of Castelia City back in Unova.
"Man," he muttered, watching the ebb and flow of the crowd. "This place is incredible."
"Yeah," Zane agreed, adjusting his bag. "It's got everything. No wonder they call it the biggest city in Johto."
"Speaking of 'everything'..." Rev gestured toward a row of food stalls lining the sidewalk ahead. The scent of sizzling meat, fried dumplings, and roasted chestnuts filled the air. "We should grab something to eat before we hit the department store."
Boe's stomach growled in agreement. "I'm down for that."
They approached the food stalls, each offering different regional specialties. A grizzled old vendor, wearing a chef's apron, waved them over.
"You kids look like you've been traveling all day! How about some Grilled Moomoo Skewers? Fresh from Olivine!"
Zane sniffed the air and grinned. "Sounds good to me!"
The vendor quickly assembled three skewers, handing them over. Thick cuts of grilled beef, marinated in a savory glaze, dripped with juices as steam curled from the fresh-off-the-grill skewers. The first bite was a burst of rich, smoky flavors, perfectly balanced by a hint of sweetness.
"This is amazing," Boe said between bites.
"Best thing I've had since we left New Bark Town," Rev agreed.
After finishing their meal, they wandered further down the street, stopping at a small bakery stall where a woman sold sweet Casteliacones—a frozen treat Boe recognized from back home. Unable to resist the nostalgia, he bought one, savoring the cool, vanilla flavor.
With their hunger satisfied, they turned their attention to their next destination—the Goldenrod Department Store.
The Goldenrod Department Store loomed before them, a massive, multi-story building lined with glass windows. A giant banner stretched across the entrance, welcoming visitors with the words:
"Goldenrod Department Store – Everything a Trainer Needs!"
"This place is like a whole town in one building," Boe mused as they stepped inside.
The interior was bright and bustling. Escalators hummed as trainers moved between floors, and shelves were lined with every type of Poké Ball imaginable, along with rows of Potions, TMs, and camping gear.
Rev glanced at a directory sign near the entrance. "Alright, what do we need?"
Zane ran his finger down the list. "Stock up on healing items, some camping supplies, and I want to check out the TMs."
The trio split up briefly, weaving through the different sections of the store. Boe picked up some Repels, potions, and camping supplies. Rev stocked up on Potions, Antidotes, and Paralyze Heals, mumbling something about "never wanting to deal with another Poison Sting again." Zane grabbed a new set of camping cookware and a fresh sleeping bag since his old one had started falling apart after Union Cave.
They regrouped on the third floor, where the Technical Machine (TM) shop was located. The glass cases displayed powerful moves, some of which carried hefty price tags.
"Man," Rev whistled, eyeing a Thunderbolt TM that cost more than he had. "No wonder people spend so much time at the Game Corner trying to win these."
Boe chuckled. "Maybe we should've saved our money instead of playing slots all night."
Zane, flipping through a book about move compatibility, suddenly perked up. "Hold on, Headbutt is here."
The shopkeeper, a tall woman with glasses, nodded. "Yep, great for knocking Pokémon out of trees. Want one?"
Boe smirked, holding up the free TM he'd won from his battle in Ilex Forest. "Already got it."
After securing everything they needed, they paid for their items and stepped out of the department store, their bags noticeably heavier.
After navigating through the city streets once more, they finally stood before the Goldenrod Gym.
Unlike the towering buildings surrounding it, the Gym had a sleek, elegant design. Its exterior was painted soft pink and white, with a rounded roof and decorative heart-shaped patterns near the entrance. A large Poké Ball emblem was carved above the doorway, marking it as an official Pokémon League Gym.
Boe took a deep breath. "So, this is where Whitney is."
Rev stretched his arms. "You ready for another Gym Battle?"
Boe hesitated for just a second. "I think so. I've heard stories about Whitney, at the café."
Zane raised an eyebrow. "Like what?"
"That she's tough," Boe said. "And that her Miltank is a nightmare to battle."
Rev smirked. "Guess you're about to find out firsthand."
With that, they stepped inside.
The interior of the Gym was like stepping into a completely different world.
Rather than a traditional battlefield, the Gym was a maze of flower-lined pathways, trimmed hedges, and pink-patterned walls. The scent of blooming roses and fresh-cut grass filled the air, giving it a deceptively gentle aura.
The Gym's design was misleading—it looked like a charming garden, but deep inside, Whitney waited.
"Looks like a hedge maze," Rev observed.
Zane smirked. "A cute battlefield for a not-so-cute fight."
Navigating through the winding paths, they finally reached the center of the Gym—a wide-open battlefield with polished flooring resembling a flower petal pattern.
Standing at the far end of the battlefield was Whitney.
She was a young woman with short, bubblegum-pink hair tied up in two small buns. She wore a white and pink gym uniform, and her cheerful expression was welcoming—but Boe knew better than to let his guard down.
As soon as she spotted them, she waved enthusiastically. "Hey there! Welcome to the Goldenrod Gym!"
Boe stepped forward, feeling his heart pound just a little faster. "I'm here to challenge you for a badge."
Whitney giggled. "Oh, fun! I love Gym Battles! But just a warning—I'm super strong, so I hope you're ready!"
Boe nodded, standing tall. "I wouldn't be here if I wasn't."
Whitney clapped her hands. "Alright then! Let's get started!"
She and Boe moved to their respective sides of the battlefield.
"I hope you're ready, 'cause my cute Pokémon are way tougher than they look!" Whitney declared, pulling out her first Poké Ball.
Boe clenched his fist, excitement surging through him. This was it—the battle for the Plain Badge was about to begin.
