Hey everyone, it's been a minute, but here's Chapter 10 and the conclusion of the Sasuke Retrieval Arc.
The sky above the Valley of the End turned a steel gray, casting long shadows over the ancient stone statues of Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha. Water churned violently beneath them, echoing the turbulence of the confrontation that had unfolded moments earlier between Naruto and Sasuke. Their battle had shaken the earth, scarred the land and left Naruto lying still, motionless, blood staining his chest.
Neji Hyuga emerged from the trees, eyes narrowing the moment she saw Naruto's limp form. Her heart clenched, but she remained composed. She immediately activated her Byakugan, her field of vision expanding in an instant, veins bulging at the edges of her temples. Her chakra perception registered only one significant signature remaining, Sasuke.
He stood across the clearing, hunched, breathing raggedly. The marks of the cursed seal had receded slightly, but his chakra was chaotic, violent, unstable, flickering like a candle near its end.
"Tch," Sasuke muttered when he noticed her. "Another one… you all keep coming like waves."
Neji stepped closer, hands sliding into her Gentle Fist stance. Her face betrayed no emotion. "You've crossed a line."
Sasuke scoffed, rolling his shoulders despite his pain. "That idiot got in my way. I gave him a chance to walk away."
"No," Neji said firmly. "You gave him a choice between pain and betrayal. He chose the one that could still save you."
"Save me?" Sasuke spat blood into the mud. "I don't need saving."
"You do," she answered. "But you don't know it yet."
Their eyes locked, his swirling with fury, hers calm but unwavering.
Without another word, Sasuke launched forward, trying to catch her by surprise with a sweeping kick. Neji deflected it with her forearm, her stance adjusting fluidly as she countered with a palm strike toward his diaphragm. Sasuke twisted just in time, narrowly avoiding a direct hit but feeling the ripple of her chakra pulse scrape his ribs.
He sprang back and immediately tried to capitalize with a burst of speed, but Neji anticipated it. Her Byakugan tracked every flicker of his movement. As he tried to flank her side, she twisted her body smoothly, ducking low and sweeping his feet.
Sasuke barely managed to flip back onto his feet, panting harder now.
"You're slower," Neji observed. "Your body's running on fumes."
"I don't need full strength to kill you," Sasuke growled, forming hand signs. "Fire Style: Phoenix Fire Jutsu!"
Dozens of fireballs surged toward her, dancing and weaving erratically through the air. Neji dashed and spun, slipping between the flames with graceful precision, the smoke licking her clothes but never catching her.
Sasuke saw an opening and rushed through the smoke cloud with a kunai aimed at her shoulder. Neji parried it mid-strike with the back of her palm, pivoted on her heel, and drove a lightning-fast jab into his upper chest, directly above his heart.
Sasuke's eyes widened, his arm went numb, chakra flow momentarily frozen.
Neji didn't let up. She advanced, delivering a sequence of precise strikes along his shoulders, arms, and lower abdomen, targeting key tenketsu points. Each hit robbed him of more control, more power.
Sasuke tried to fall back, gasping, his muscles stiffening as his chakra flow failed to circulate properly. Desperation flashed in his eyes.
"I won't go back," he hissed. "I'm done with Konoha."
"Then I'll drag you back," Neji snapped, voice sharper than her strikes. "Because I won't let him suffer again for your weakness."
A powerful Chidori surged to life in Sasuke's palm, the lightning cracking loud in the air; but it was weak, sputtering. Still, he lunged, a cry of rage escaping him.
Neji braced herself. As he closed the distance, she feinted right, ducked under his extended arm, and rotated on her axis, a fluid spin that brought her behind him. Her palms shot out in a twin strike one to his exposed kidney, the other to his chakra gate at the base of the spine.
Sasuke crumpled forward, screaming in pain as the Chidori fizzled out entirely.
He turned around sluggishly, face contorted with pain and disbelief.
"You're not strong enough," she said, panting softly but still firm in her stance. "Not anymore."
Sasuke staggered forward, but Neji had already dropped into a low stance.
"Eight Trigrams: Thirty-Two Palms!"
She moved like lightning, each strike methodical and exact. Every hit sealed another chakra point, disrupting his network until his body could no longer support itself. On the thirty-second strike, Sasuke collapsed to his knees, his Sharingan dimming.
Neji stood over him, shoulders heaving.
"You lost."
Sasuke's vision blurred. "I… I still…"
"You still chose hatred," she finished for him.
Sasuke slumped forward, unconscious.
Neji released her stance and took a deep breath. Her limbs trembled slightly from exertion. She knelt beside him, confirming he was no longer a threat.
That's when she heard the soft breeze shift and Kakashi appeared.
His gaze landed on the subdued Uchiha and then on Neji. "You restrained him?"
Neji didn't look up. "He's lost chakra. He can't fight."
Kakashi moved swiftly, lifting Sasuke over his shoulder. "You've done more than enough."
"I'm not the one who nearly died for him," Neji replied, finally glancing back at Naruto's unconscious form.
"I'll get Sasuke back to the village," Kakashi said. "You bring him home."
Neji turned back toward Naruto, her eyes softening. She gently pulled him up onto her back, supporting his head against her shoulder. She paused, standing still for a moment.
And then, without a word, began the long journey back.
…
The sun dipped low, bleeding orange across the canopy as Neji trekked through the forest path, her footfalls muffled by moss and soil. Naruto's limp form remained heavy on her back not just in body, but in significance. Each step felt like she carried a piece of the burden he had chosen to bear alone.
His head rested lightly against her shoulder, his breath faint but steady now. She could still feel his warmth, still hear the echoes of his fight reverberating in her thoughts.
"Why would he go so far?"
Neji tightened her grip on his legs as she adjusted his weight.
"He didn't do this for glory. He didn't do it for recognition. He did it… for someone who turned on him."
It shook her more than she cared to admit.
Not just because Naruto had survived, but because he'd willingly faced death for a friend who abandoned him and somehow, didn't waver.
"You're more than a fool… you're the kind of strength this world doesn't understand."
She recalled the words he had shouted at her once: "Because I'll never go back on my word. That's my ninja way!"
At the time, she had scoffed. But now, she found herself clinging to those words.
A part of her hated that it stirred something inside her. Another part? Quietly, silently, cherished it.
Her eyes softened. "You're the reason I started changing… and I didn't even realize it."
"What kind of heart endures so much and still chooses kindness?"
Her mind drifted again, to their Chunin Exam match. His words, his fists, how he shattered her beliefs, not with cruelty, but conviction. He'd believed in something greater than fate.
And now he'd nearly died for that belief again.
"You're… changing me, Naruto Uzumaki," she thought with quiet awe.
She allowed herself a small smile as the sun dipped low behind the trees.
…
Neji lay under the soft linen covers of her futon, staring at the ceiling. The room was quiet, save for the rustle of wind through the paper screens. She shifted slightly, feeling the aftereffects of the soldier pill still gnawing at her chakra pathways. Her muscles ached in dull pulses, and her mind, usually razor-focused, had become sluggish in recovery.
She hated the idleness.
"I should be up. I should be training."
But her body wouldn't allow it. Not yet.
And so she thought about the fight, about Sasuke, about Naruto.
And about Hiroshi's proposition.
She frowned. The memory of that conversation, of his desperation and anger, still lingered. She wasn't naïve, she knew the deep scars the Branch Family bore. She bore them herself. But she couldn't shake the unease in the way he spoke of revolution.
"If I help him… if I go down that road… what do I become?"
"Would it be freedom? Or would it just be vengeance in another form?"
Her thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock at the door.
"Come in," she said softly.
The door slid open. Hinata stepped in, carrying a tray with a small pot of tea and two cups. Her face was flushed, a soft smile dancing on her lips.
"I thought… you might like something warm," she said gently.
Neji blinked, sitting up slowly with some effort. "Thank you, Hinata-sama."
Hinata's smile faded slightly. "You don't have to call me that anymore."
"It's tradition," Neji replied, voice neutral.
"Traditions can change."
Neji looked at her for a moment, then nodded. "Very well… Hinata."
The younger girl poured two cups of tea and handed one to Neji, who accepted it with both hands. They sat quietly for a few minutes, the warmth of the tea spreading through Neji's fingers.
"You've changed," Neji said softly, breaking the silence.
Hinata looked down into her cup. "I'm trying. Watching you fight… hearing what you said… I don't want to stay who I was anymore."
Neji looked at her cousin, the faintest smile tugging at the corner of her lips. "What do you want to become?"
"Stronger," Hinata said simply. "Not just in skill… but in spirit. I want to be like you. Will you train with me?"
Neji blinked. "You want me to train you?"
"You're the strongest Hyuga I know," Hinata said sincerely. "You understand the world in ways I never could. I want to learn from you."
Neji hesitated, but nodded. "I'll help you."
Hinata looked relieved, but then grew serious. "And I want to help you too… with the Caged Bird Seal."
Neji tensed.
"I don't know how yet," Hinata continued, "but I'll find a way. You don't deserve to live under it. You're not a servant. You're… my equal."
The words struck something deep inside her.
Neji looked down at her tea. "Thank you. But I help you because I want to. Not because I need to prove anything."
"I know," Hinata said softly. "But it still matters."
They drank in silence again.
Hinata's gaze turned toward the window. "How's Naruto?"
"He's recovering well," Neji replied. "Typical of him."
Hinata smiled faintly. "I… think I'll visit him soon."
She stood, placing her cup down and bowing slightly. "Thank you, Neji."
As she turned to leave, Neji's voice stopped her.
"Hinata…"
Hinata looked back. "Yes?"
"There's… something I need to tell you."
