"Mud is supposed to be good for the complexion," Willow said helpfully, trying not to laugh because Buffy didn't look at all amused. Not that Willow could blame her.

"Somehow I don't think this is the kind of mud the beauty books are talking about." Buffy sounded sort of resigned. "This stuff smells… rancid, or something. Can mud go off? Because I think this has." Getting to her feet, Buffy tried to scrape the worst of the mud off her clothes with the edge of her hand, letting it drop back into the puddle with a glutinous splat.

Willow winced, giving her friend a sympathetic smile. "You are a bit… pungent," she admitted. "You should probably walk behind me."

"Walk where? I can't go home looking like this. Mom will think I've taken up mud wrestling!"

"You sort of have. Just for a single round, but still…" Willow bit her lip. "You didn't really have much choice."

"Like I can explain THAT to mom."

"Maybe you should come back to my house. I can hose you down in the garden, then you can take a shower. I'll loan you something to wear."

"Thanks, Will. You're the best."

"What're friends for?"
