Following the previous day's video activity, Sky and his group rode high from their win. With only two days left of camp, everyone was eager to know their next activity as the rankings were all mixed, given how they started. Everyone was in the dining hall, having breakfast that Celestia had made herself. The professor soon made her presence known, along with her sister.
"Good morning, Trainers. Is everyone having a good time at camp?" asked Celestia. The professor got a collective response, which made her smile. "That is marvelous to hear. Thanks. Now then… I'm sure you're all wondering what the next activity will be. Well, I just happen to have an event sure to make things even more marvelous."
Celestia's response got the trainers to look at each other with confusion.
"Now then, get ready for our favorite tradition that we do here at camp. It's… the Pokémon Relay Race," said Luna, gesturing to the screen behind them as it turned on and displayed the words for all to see.
"Placing of the race will determine how many points are awarded. Now, here's the kicker: despite this being a team sport, it's also a race, so therefore, if just one person from either group crosses the finish line first, their group will be awarded those points to contribute to their team. At each checkpoint, you must select someone to get the stamp for your card, along with a Pokémon by your side. You can only use the Pokémon that you registered during registration. Furthermore, the same person can't do two back-to-back checkpoints."
"The things you've learned this week will play a key role!" added Celestia as Luna moved to the next talking point.
"The starting line for this race is here at camp, and everyone will begin simultaneously! There are certain parts of the course where you will be given a Pokéball, but you'll have no idea which Pokémon it contains ahead of time!"
"It's just like the first day," said Applejack.
"If you look here, you'll see this lake. You'll need to use the Pokémon we provide you to cross it. You'll find similar instances along the course. Also, it should be stated that under no circumstances should you attack or battle with any other teams!" stated Luna with a serious glare.
"Now that the rules are explained, everyone, go out and have fun. The relay race will begin in one hour," said Celestia as she took over from Luna's explanation of the rules.
The hour of preparation flew by in a blur as all the trainers gathered at the starting line. Each had their backpacks and sacks on them, as they were given some supplies in case of emergencies or some quick energy, given this was going to be a long race. The groups gathered around as they looked over their maps to chart their course.
"So we stick to this path when we come to this crossroads; we should have the quickest path," stated Twilight, running all calculations in her head to find the best path for them to win.
"Hey, Sky, how's your hand doin'?" asked the country gal, concerned for her friend's health.
"Good as new!" smiled the boy as his hand felt much better.
A whistle was heard, and it caught everyone's attention. Celestia stood before a podium, wanting to say some words before they began.
"Alright, everyone. It's time to begin. This is a chance to combine your best efforts with team cooperation. Now then, everyone on your marks!"
At that sound, everyone lined up and got into a running position as they awaited the professor's signal.
"Get set!" stated Luna, holding up a flag before bringing it down. "GO!"
The group of trainers began to book it out of the starting gates as the race was on. Once everyone had left the starting line, the two sisters shared a nod before they went off in opposite directions. Celestia had made it to the main tent, where she would be monitoring the whole race; she had a small crew with her and tons of screens that all had cameras to watch every single leg of the race.
"Everybody at your stations?" said Celestia as she put on a headset.
"Checkpoint A, reporting in!" said one of her assistants.
"This is Checkpoint B. All ready to go!"
"Lulu?" asked Celestia.
"I'm making my way to the first obstacle, Tia," said Luna as she was shown in the sky on the back of her Noivern. She peered down to see she was just above the trainers as they approached the forest section where they would need to use a random Pokémon to traverse the dense woodlands. "Well, it seems Ms. Dash lives up to her name."
The professor could see that Rainbow was really getting into the name of speed. She had taken the early lead of charging ahead while leaving the rest of her team a bit behind.
"I'll be able to monitor all teams from here during the race. I'll be able to observe the Trainers to see if they work together well. And see how strong the bonds are with their Pokémon," stated Celestia.
Noivern dove down as Luna held on. The pair landed beside a stand with a box of Poké balls inside. The professor fixed her hair just as Rainbow approached the stand and skidded to a halt.
"To pass through the forest, you'll need to pick a random Pokémon and ride it," informed Luna.
"Okay, I'll take… this one!" said Rainbow as she grabbed the Pokéball closest to her. "Alright, come on out!"
The chromatic-haired girl threw her Pokéball, and out came her Pokémon. It was a tall, bird-like Pokémon that resembled an ostrich. It had two identical heads, was covered in brown down, and had large taloned feet.
"Alright!" said Rainbow as she liked what she picked and quickly got on.
"Dash, wait!" shouted Silverbolt as he and the rest of their team were barely catching up.
"Sorry, guys. But we need to get first place! Pick up the pace, slowpokes!" stated the girl as she made her Doduo start to run as they sped forward.
"Oh, that girl. Come on, Lyra, Bonbon!" said the boy to his teammates as they all went to the stand to pick their Pokémon.
At that moment, Sky, Applejack, Twilight, and Juniper appeared, as they were the second group to emerge as the head of the pack. They all grabbed a random Pokéball before throwing it out to reveal what was inside.
"Yee-haw! I got a Rapidash!" said Applejack as she was used to riding one back on the farm.
"At least with Steelix, I'll get a bird's eye," said Twilight.
"Nice, Luxray," said Juniper as she petted the Pokémon's fur.
"Come on, girls!" said Sky as he hopped onto the back of his Pokémon, an Ampharos, and all four began to race into the forest.
Watching on the screen, Celestia kept a close eye on them all. Once the last Trainers had received their Pokémon, Luna got back on her Noivern's back and flew into the sky. The professor was now heading toward the first checkpoint, which was a rocky cliff on a mountainside. One of her assistants was waiting there. She touched down at the base of the cliff as she looked toward her assistant with a wave.
"This is Checkpoint A. Your sister has landed, Professor Celestia," said the woman as she lifted her binoculars and saw Rainbow, who her own teammates were trailing behind. Behind them was Sky's group, and they were approaching them. "I can see the first batch of trainers approaching."
"I see a checkpoint!" said Sky as he informed the girls and pointed.
"We're almost there!" responded Applejack.
Rainbow made it to the drop-off area as she hopped off her Doduo.
"Thanks for the lift!" the girl said as she pulled out the Pokémon and remembered the bird.
She deposited the Pokéball into the box Luna had by her just as her teammates finally caught up to her.
"Dash, you think maybe you could slow down? We're a team here!" said Bolt as he recalled his Pokémon and dropped it in the box.
"You know I want to win more than anything!" the girl said, as her competitive spirit was too much to quell. "Now, where is that checkpoint?"
"According to the map, it should be right around here," said Lyra as she looked at the area diagram.
"But I don't see it," responded Bonbon as all four looked in different directions but couldn't see anything.
Sky and his group managed to catch up as they thanked their Pokémon and deposited them into the box. At that moment, a voice called out to them from above.
"Everyone! Up here!" shouted the assistant as she waved her hand, getting the kids to look up.
"You mean the checkpoint is up there?" said Juniper as they realized how high up the cliff was.
"Please send one trainer from your teams up here along with their Pokémon, and I'll give you your stamp," said the woman.
"We have to climb up there?" said Lyra.
"That's a bit extreme," responded Bonbon.
"Well, Snivy ain't gonna have a problem with that. Come on out, queen!" stated Rainbow as she pulled out her Pokéball to call on her Pokémon.
"Snivy!" said the Pokémon as she appeared proud with her hands on her hips.
"Let's get to climb!" stated Rainbow.
"Snivy!"
The Pokémon flipped into the air as she landed on a section of the cliff. She used her Vine Whip to grab Rainbow and began to pull her up.
"Um, Rainbow."
"What now?" shouted Dash as she was turned to glare at her friend.
"I was going to say that was a smart idea," Bolt said, as if she had come up with a good plan for once.
"They're good, but we'll have no problem climbing up. Now, Turtwig, I choose you!" said Sky as he called on his Pokémon.
"Turtwig!"
"You ready to go up with me, bud?" asked the boy as his Pokémon nodded.
The two began to scale the cliffside as Turtwig hopped onto a ledge and waited as Sky pulled himself up. Just ahead of them, Rainbow and Snivy still had a huge lead as the small snake had just hopped onto the next ledge and turned to make her vines appear to help hoist Rainbow up to its level. However, the weight under her gave way, and she began to plummet along with Dash as the two fell.
"Oh, no, Rainbow!" shouted Lyra as everyone gasped to see her and Snivy falling.
"Turtwig, use Razor Leaf!" commanded Sky as he turned to his Pokémon.
The small green Pokémon flicked the twig on its head, and he made several leaves shoot out as they collected gathered on a flat rock platform directly below Rainbow and Snivy. The leaves began to gather into one giant pile as Dash and Snivy crashed into the pile. Safe to say, the giant pile of leaves was soft enough that it cushioned their fall and kept them safe. The pair popped their head out and saw the leaves before looking up to see Sky and Turtwig above them.
"Are you okay?" asked the boy as he turned to look down at them.
"Yeah. Thanks. Looks like I owe you one," smiled Rainbow as did Snivy.
Sky chuckled as he and Turtwig continued to climb. Rainbow and Snivy soon collected themselves as they returned to scaling the cliffside. Soon, the boy and his Pokémon reached the top of the cliff as the small Pokémon turned to help his trainer pull himself up.
"Thanks, Turtwig," said Sky as they ran toward the woman and the table she had set up near her. "Can we stamp out card, please?"
"The Yellow Team is the first team to get here. Here you go," said the woman as she presented the stamp and ink to the teen.
Sky dropped the stamp into the ink as he approached the table. He took the checkpoint recording map around his neck and unfolded it. Turtwig put one of his stubby little legs on the ink stamp and Sky's hand as the two collectively dropped it onto the first checkpoint of their tiny map and stamped it. Once they did that, the two shared a nod and a smile.
"Let's get to the next checkpoint. Come on!" said the boy as he and Turtwig turned to hightail it.
Rainbow and Snivy were still climbing when she saw Sky, sliding down the cliffside with Turtwig in his arms. He stopped momentarily to address her.
"See you later," smirked the boy as he slid the rest of the way down.
Rainbow didn't take too kindly to being out beaten as she saw Sky reach the bottom and take off with Aj, Twilight, and Juniper toward the next leg of the race.
"Nothing we can do now. But… till next time," smiled Dash, as she wouldn't let what happened now repeat.
"Snivy!" said the Pokémon as she, too, felt her trainer's determination and competitiveness.
"Status report!" said Celestia.
"Checkpoint A. Sky's group came in first for the Yellow Team, and Rainbow's group came in second for the Red Team," informed the assistant as she just saw the two groups leave and updated Celestia on the rankings.
"Many thanks for the update," said Celestia with a smile.
The next checkpoint was on the other side of the bridge, hanging over a massive river drop. This time, Silverbolt and his Greninja had opted to get their stamp as the two were ninja-hopping on the bridge. As for Sky's group, Twilight struggled to cross as she couldn't stand up, given how high they were; she had her Espeon in front of her as the Pokémon walked casually before her as she grabbed its tail.
"Wait for me," said the girl, who didn't want to get left behind.
Her Pokémon began to walk even slower to help guide her trainer through her fear. They made it about halfway when they halted as they saw Bolt and his Pokémon had reached the other side. The pair stamped their card as they turned and began to run back across the bridge. The running made the bridge rock a bit. Twilight held onto the side of the bridge for support, and Espeon just sat on its hind and looked at her trainer.
"See ya later," said the boy as he gave a sly smile and zoomed past Twilight.
Eventually, Twilight managed to cross the bridge; she got to the table and stamped her group's card with Espeon, groaning. Her Pokémon looked at her with a weird expression. Just as she was about to head back across the bridge, she noticed Spike rush past her as he stamped his card with Goomy, who was on his shoulder. The boy smiled before he ran past his older sister and her Pokémon.
"Ha ha! I beat you, Twilight!" said the boy, as it felt good to beat his sister at something, given how she always outlasted him.
Espeon got a bit ticked off at seeing the sibling of her master mock her as she yelped at Twilight to hurry it up. Following Twilight's performance, the group was now trailing behind her brother's group as they made their way to the next checkpoint. They arrived at another cliffside, where there were several huge cave entrances. At the top, an assistant got their attention.
"Hello, the stamp's up here!"
"I'll go this time," said Juniper as she called on her Vivillon.
"Go for it, Juniper!" cheered Sky.
"We're counting on you!" stated Aj.
The two enter a cave as Rainbow and her group arrive. Bonbon and her Vulpix from their group nominated themselves as they entered a different cave entrance. Juniper was jogging along the cave before she peeked her head out the side and retracted it. She continued jogging deeper into the cave path before taking a left. Bonbon did the same but took the path to the right. To the girls' surprise, the cave network was a maze, as now and then, they or their Pokémon would pop out of one of the exit holes only to find it was the wrong one and hop back into the maze. This went on for quite a while as nobody could seem to find the right way, much less remember which exits they had already checked, as they all looked the same.
"What's going on!" shouted Rainbow.
"This…"
"Isn't…"
"As…"
"Easy…"
"As…"
"It…"
"Looks/Looks!" shouted both girls as they peeked their heads out of the same exit along with their Pokémon before dipping back in.
It was clear that the maze was proving much more difficult than Rainbow had made it out to be, as neither could seem to find the right exit.
"Why is this so hard!" yelled Juniper as she exited the maze with her Pokémon.
"Congratulations!" said the woman waiting for them.
"Huh?"
The girl was shocked as she lifted her head to see the smiling assistant who held the stamp plate.
"You're here first. Feel free to stamp your team's card."
The girl and her Pokémon stamped their cards, signaling to their team that they had received their next marker. One by one, the trainers began to collect the remaining checkpoint stamps for their cards as soon as nearly everyone had their cards filled.
"All checkpoints have been cleared, Tia," said Luna as she was in the air on her Noivern's back. "At present, we've got Sky's group in first place, with Ms. Dash's group tailing behind. Ms. Rarity's group is third, and Ms. Scootaloo's group trails behind them."
"As I expected, Lulu. Those teams are at the top for a reason. All that's left is to see who crossed the finish line first for their team." Celestia looked at the map and saw the trainers approaching the lake they needed to cross.
Sky and his group arrived at the lake and approached the stand with an assistant with a box full of Poké balls.
"In order to cross the lake, you'll need to use one of these random Pokémon. Once you get to the other side, Professor Luna will be waiting," said the assistant.
"Alright then," said Sky, reaching for a Pokéball. "Come on out!"
The boy tossed his Pokéball, and out came a Samurott. He jumped into the water without hesitation and grabbed the Pokémon. The Pokémon began to shoot forward, and Sky held on to avoid slipping off.
"Talk about diving head first," said Twilight.
Rainbow and her group arrived just as Applejack reached for a Pokéball and tossed it to reveal what was inside. The Pokémon inside was a Blastoise; the large turtle leaned down on all four as the country gal hopped on.
"Let's get a move on, partner!"
Blastoise heard Applejack's call as it began to move forward.
"Oh, no, you don't, Aj!" shouted Rainbow as she shoved herself between Twilight and Juniper to grab a Poké ball quickly.
She tossed it, and out came a Floatzel. The girl jumped on its back and propelled forward, splashing water on her teammates, Twilight and Juniper. The chromatic-haired girl was determined not to get left behind as she quickly caught up with Sky and Applejack's early lead.
"I was wondering if you finally gave up." Sky smirked as he looked at Dash.
"Grr! Full speed ahead!" commanded Rainbow as her Floatzel began to zoom past the two.
"Hold yer horses, partner!" stated Applejack as she let her competitive spirit come forth and tapped her Blastoise to pick up the pace as it did so.
The two trainers were in a full-on race as they tried to overtake each other. At that moment, something jumped out of the water before them, revealing itself to be Sky. The two girls were shocked, as the boy had instructed his Pokémon to use Aqua Jet under the water to gain more speed, so they were now jumping in and out of the water like a dolphin.
"See ya!" shouted the boy before leaving their sight.
"Well, two can play that game. Floatzel, you use Aqua Jet as well," shouted Rainbow as she propelled forward much faster using the move.
"Alright, Blastoise, you use Ice Beam!" stated Applejack.
The Pokémon heard the command of the country gal as it opened its mouth, and a beam of ice shot out. Part of the lake froze as Blastoise began to slide up the mini iceberg it had created before it reached the top and slid down the other side on its belly. This allowed the pair to pick up speed, using the momentum from gravity as it propelled forward upon touching the water again.
"Well, there's no short of competitiveness between those three," said Juniper as she was surfing on the back of her Mantine.
"Yeah, well, we can play that game, too. Come on, everyone, double time!" shouted Scootaloo from behind Twilight and Juniper.
"Right!" said the rest of the girl's team as they were all on Sharpedos and swam collectively together.
They all swam in a pod and zoomed in between Twilight and Juniper as some water splashed on the bookworm by her brother.
"Spike!" yelled Twilight.
The boy stuck his tongue out at his older sibling, which made Twilight angry. She kicked her Swampert in the side as he took the cue and sped up, with Juniper also doing the same as Mantine zoomed ahead. Sky soon saw the other end of the lake coming up, and one last Aqua Jet propelled him forward. He flipped off Samurott's back and landed like a superhero.
"Thanks for the lift, Samurott!" said the boy as he pulled out the Pokémon's Poke ball and returned it.
Sky could see that both Applejack and Rainbow were closing in. He quickly turned and approached the stand that Luna was stationed at as he deposited the Pokéball in and looked at the professor.
"For the race's final leg, you and a Pokémon of yours must race together," said Luna.
"In that case… Noctowl, I choose you!" said the boy as he called on his Pokémon.
The owl appeared before he landed on the boy's shoulder.
"Ready to do this?" asked Sky.
He got a nod and confident response from his Pokémon as the two prepared. Sky took a moment to tighten his backpack before bending down into a running position. Then, he took off as Noctowl flew beside him. Moments later, Applejack and Rainbow finished crossing. They quickly deposited their Pokémon and called upon the partner they wanted to race with.
"Boltund!"
"Taillow!"
The two Pokémon appeared as they looked at their trainers.
"Come on, Taillow! Let's win!"
"Let's get it, partner!"
The dog barked as it took off behind Applejack. Rainbow and Taillow were also taking off just as Spike and his group arrived at the bank, followed by Silverbolt.
"Alright, Goomy. Come on out!" said Spike as he called on his Pokémon.
"Goomy!" said the slug as he appeared before the small boy.
"How are you gonna race with Goomy, Spike?" asked Apple Bloom as she could tell the slug wasn't a fast runner.
The boy had a hesitant look as he didn't seem to think about the idea that Goomy wasn't fast. Soon, an idea popped into his head.
"Hop on my shoulder!" said the boy as his slug slowly trudged forward and began to climb the boy's body until he was on Spike's shoulder.
"Goomy!" said the slug as the pair looked at Luna for her decision.
"I'll allow it," smiled the woman, giving the young boy credit for his smart thinking.
"Well, come on then!" said Scootaloo as she took off with her Pidgy.
The rest soon followed their friend as they began to race with their Pokémon. Silverbolt called on his Pikachu as he bent down to give his yellow rodent a treat. He patted the mouse before they took off. Once the last trainers had finished crossing the lake, Luna got on her Noivern's back one last time as she would follow the trainers during the race's last leg. She was soaring high above the skies as she spoke into her headset.
"What's the status, Lulu?" asked Celestia over the headset.
"Well, Sky arrived first and is currently leading his team. Close behind him is his teammate, Ms. Applejack. But Ms. Dash isn't far behind as her teammate Mr. Bolt is bringing up the rear end. Ms. Scootaloo's team trails behind them as a group."
"Keep me posted, Lulu."
Sky was pacing himself as, after being informed by Luna how long it was to get back to camp, he knew he couldn't come out of the gates strong even if he had competition right on his heels. Rainbow was closing in on the boy as she and Taillow were determined to get first place for their team to score the most points. Applejack wasn't far behind as she soon caught up to her teammate. The trio was entering a cave, as they would need to navigate it to come out the other end, leading them back to the campgrounds. As the trio held their lead at the front of the pack, Rainbow noticed that a few areas of the cave floor were fragile; she avoided them and leaped over them.
However, the unfortunate thing happened when Applejack and Boltund were trekking through the cave: the dog ran over one of the fragile spots and crumbled under its own weight. It began to let out a yelp as Applejack heard and quickly reacted.
"Boltund!"
Applejack jumped at her falling Pokémon as she managed to get a hold of it. The country gal managed to hold onto part of the chasm as they were suspended. The dog looked down to see how deep the drop was before he looked up at Applejack, who had her arm around its body. The canine whimpered as he feared the girl wouldn't be able to pull them up.
"Just hang on, partner. I'll get us out of here," said Applejack, giving her dog a fake smile as she could feel the hold she was clutching snap.
The two started falling when a hand reached out to grab hers. To the girl's surprise, Sky was shown reaching over with almost half his body over the edge.
"I got you, Aj!" said Sky, as he wasn't about to let his teammate or her Pokémon fall.
"Sky…" said the farmer as she couldn't believe the boy was saving her.
"Now, hold on tight! You'll both be fine!"
"Pull!" shouted Rainbow.
The boy wasn't alone as he had his Noctowl and Rainbow's Taillow tugging on his shirt; wrapped around the two birds were Snivy's vines, which Rainbow grabbed to use as a rope. The three began to pull with all their strength as they held onto Sky so he could pull Aj and Boltund up. The girl was soon rescued as she and her Pokémon were safe, and their friends and Pokémon were all out of breath.
"Thanks, y'all," said Applejack as she tried to get her bearings straight.
Boltund came up to her side and whimpered. He kept his head low and nudged his trainer with his ears down to show how sad he was. The country girl could see how distraught her canine was, and she could tell he blamed himself for not being careful and watching where he was running, which had put them in danger. Applejack smiled as she began to pet her dog's head, so he got closer and licked her face.
"Good boy," said the farmer.
"Hey…" said Rainbow, getting Sky's attention before standing up and recalling her Snivy into her Poké ball. "We're even now."
The chromatic-haired teen had felt she had returned Sky's favor from him saving her from before as she took off to continue the race with her Taillow. At that moment, Silverbolt came running past them. He stopped to smile at his friends and raced past them to catch up with his teammates. The boy soon caught up with Rainbow as she took notice of him.
"Good on you," the boy said to his friend, praising her loyalty to helping their comrades.
"Yeah, well… I don't like owing people anything. Plus, winning ain't fun if there's no competition around," said Rainbow before smiling.
The two shared a moment before they picked up speed along with their Pokémon and exited the tunnel. Back with Applejack and Sky, the boy stood up and dusted himself off before checking on his Pokémon. The girl gave her Pokémon a treat as she continued to pet his head to assure him it wasn't his fault.
"Glad you're fine, Aj," smiled the boy as it got the girl's attention. Hearing that from her friend made the cowgirl turn red while looking at the boy. "Come on! We still have a chance! Ready, Noctowl?"
The owl nodded as the two began to run. The cowgirl looked at her canine as Sky's determination got to her, and she stood up. She put on a fierce look and was inspired by her friend's words to finish this race strong. Boltund sensed her newfound grit as the Pokémon stood beside his trainer. Sky exited the tunnel as he looked to catch up with Rainbow and Bolt; he sensed something behind him and tilted his head to see Applejack and Boltund on their heels. The pair caught up and were side by side with their friends. She had a smile; the boy nodded as the two picked up the pace to make up for the lost ground.
Celestia stood at the finish line as some of her assistants held a white tape. Luna was landing as she thanked her Noivern for all the flying it did before tossing a berry at it for it to munch on. She soon joined her sister as they looked over the hill to see Rainbow and Silverbolt as the first to emerge. The pair started to tire out as the race's last leg was much more grueling than anticipated. Even for someone built like Rainbow, she could feel her body starting to take its toll. However, the moment she stopped, she knew her legs would ache as she pushed herself not to stop moving until she crossed the line so she could crash out in pain.
"Come on, Rainbow. Almost there!" said Bolt as he tried to motivate his teammate.
"Yeah… Almost…" panted the girl as she could see victory in her sights.
"Well, I say we have a clear winner in Ms. Dash, eh, Tia?"
"Don't count your horses yet, Lulu," smirked Celestia as she pointed behind the pair.
Applejack and Sky closed in on their friends, as they were not too far behind. The pair pushed themselves as they knew if only one of them crossed the line first, they would secure the most points for their team. Eventually, four trainers and their Pokémon were neck and neck, with one of them overtaking the lead occasionally. Back and forth, it went between the top four teens as they knew how important this win was.
"You can do it, everyone!" shouted Celestia, encouraging and supporting the four teens.
"First place is ours!" yelled Rainbow as she shifted into extra gear.
"No… it's… not!" yelled Sky as he went into overdrive.
As Rainbow ran faster, she didn't pay attention to a small pebble on the ground when she stepped on it; she wobbled as her momentum was too much, which sent her crashing down and tripping before falling into a full tumble. The girl crashed into Silverbolt; he tried to catch the girl from hitting the ground hard to avoid an injury before he was caught. The two began to tumble and form a dirt cloud as they headed for Sky and Applejack, heading straight for it. At that last second, Applejack and Boltund bashed into their teammates to shove them out of the way as they got run over and pulled into the tumble while Sky recovered on a moment's notice and kept running.
"Keep going, sugar!" yelled Applejack as she struggled to get up with the two.
Seeing that she was willing to sacrifice herself to allow him a chance to get first place, Sky nodded and focused on finishing first. Rainbow could see Sky getting away as she shoved Bolt off her and tried to run, only to slip initially before using her adrenaline to get back up and run, with Taillow following her lead. Despite the tumble, Rainbow caught up to Sky just as the two were inches away. She stuck a hand out as if to reach for it when a flash occurred from a nearby camera, and the two were shown crossing the finish line with Luna waving the flag. The photo finish showed Sky and Noctowl crossing the finish line first, with Rainbow having a hand on his shirt to indicate a few seconds more, and she would've yanked him back to allow herself a quick boost forward.
"We have a winner! From the Yellow Team, Sky places first, followed by second place for the Red Team with Ms. Rainbow Dash!" announced Celestia. She saw the pair's teammates closing in as they crossed the finish line. "Coming in third is Silverbolt, scoring points again for the Red Team, and Ms. Applejack is in fourth, scoring points for the Yellow Team."
"Yeah! We did it!" yelled Sky as he quickly thrusted his arm upward in victory despite being tired.
Noctowl made a proud sound as he landed on his trainer's shoulder. Rainbow, bent over and trying to catch her breath, looked at the boy. As much as she hated that she had lost and came in second no less, the show of respect toward being a good competitor outweighed her bitterness as she could only nod in approval. She was approached by Bolt, who offered the girl a water bottle, and she downed the whole thing within seconds.
"Congrats, sugarcube," said Applejack despite coming in fourth, knowing they got the first place would make up for most of the points for their team.
"Thanks, Aj!" the boy expressed, grateful to the country girl for giving him a brief chance to take the lead.
Soon thereafter, the rest of the trainers began to cross the finish line, including Twilight and Juniper. The pair finished in the top ten as Sky's first-place victory allowed them to cover their placing. In the end, once the entire race was done, Celestia and Luna began to tally the points.
"We now have the final results of the race. We currently have a tie between the Yellow Team and the Red Team. In third place is the Orange Team. Fourth, the Indigo Team. Fifth, the Blue Team. Sixth, the Pink Team. And in seventh place, the Green Team," said Celestia, revealing the race results and the accumulated point total.
"You all did a splendid job and deserve a reward. So, I hope you all worked up an appetite because dinner is served!" said Luna.
At the sound of the dinner bell, everyone booked a room in the mess hall. Seeing the faces of all the trainers made both sisters smile. Tomorrow was the final day of camp, and it was time to determine which team of trainers would be inducted into this year's Hall of Fame. They were sure the final grand event would be one to remember.
