The sky over Saffron City was heavy with gray clouds, mirroring the quiet tension in Ash's chest. The next day after the Viridian infiltration had passed in a haze of congratulations, rest, and vague dread. They'd won a battle, sure. But the war? It was far from over.

Professor Oak had called Ash into his office earlier that morning with a serious expression and a message waiting on his monitor—a secure transmission from the International Police. It requested a private meeting. Just Ash. In Saffron City. No details. No promises. Just an address and a time.

Gary didn't like it. Paul liked it even less. But Oak gave Ash a slow, trusting nod.

"If they're really stepping in now," Oak had said, "it means someone out there is finally listening."

And so here he was. One backpack slung over his shoulder, Pikachu riding quietly at his side, eyes sharp. The city was quieter than usual. People walked fast and avoided eye contact, a clear sign of the tension that still strangled Kanto's cities under Team Rocket's grip.

Ash followed the directions down a long alley behind a forgotten warehouse. A steel door opened before he even knocked. A silent escort in black shades waved him inside without a word.

They led him through tight hallways, down two flights of stairs, and finally to a dimly lit room behind a reinforced metal door.

Ash stepped in.

The first thing he noticed was the cold. The second was the man standing against the far wall, older now, dressed in a thick trench coat with dark circles under his eyes and a trimmed beard peppered with gray.

"Looker?" Ash blinked.

The man stepped forward with a tired smile. "Ash Ketchum… you've grown."

Ash took a step closer. Pikachu's ears twitched with caution.

"You don't remember me, do you?" Looker asked, smile widening slightly. "But I remember you. You were younger back then, full of hope and fire. Seems like some of that's still in you."

Ash didn't respond right away. He looked to the side, noticing the other man seated at a long steel desk. Dark coat. Gloves. Pale face. Cold stare.

"This," Looker continued, "is Detective Tedesco. He's my partner. One of the best minds in international surveillance."

Tedesco gave a slow, unreadable nod. His eyes didn't leave Ash. Pikachu moved a little closer to Ash's leg.

"What's this all about?" Ash finally asked, straightening. "I heard you've been tracking Rocket activity. You're just now making contact?"

"We were trying to keep things from escalating," Looker said, voice lowering. "But we failed. Team Rocket's evolved into something we never anticipated. Corruption. Power. Influence. Their claws are deeper than anyone knows."

Ash clenched his fists. "So what do you want from me?"

Looker approached slowly, eyes locked on his. "I want to help you. And I want you to help us. What you did in Viridian—it was a spark. You hurt them. Badly. Giovanni's going to retaliate. You know it. I know it. But we can do more."

Ash narrowed his eyes. "You saw what happened already?"

"We know everything," Tedesco said, finally speaking. His voice was cold and even, like stone. "We've had eyes on multiple regions. Surveillance tech that makes Rocket's toys look like scraps. Your assault in Viridian caused shockwaves. Giovanni knows it was you. Red. The Pewter boy. Oak's grandson."

Looker stepped in again. "Which is why we want to bring you in. Not as a suspect, but as an ally. With your experience, your connections… we can coordinate targeted attacks. You'll have the full backing of the International Police."

Ash blinked. "Why now? Why me?"

Looker sighed, stepping over to a file cabinet and pulling something out—a worn photo of Ash from his earlier journey days, holding a badge with pride.

"I've seen kids like you crash and burn. But not you. Even now, with everything you've lost…" He paused, voice softening. "Delia was a good woman. She didn't deserve what happened."

Ash's face tensed. Pikachu's ears lowered.

"You knew my mom?" he asked, voice suddenly fragile.

Looker nodded. "Briefly. Years ago. She helped us out once, gave us shelter when we were investigating Rocket ops near Pallet. She didn't tell you. She was like that. Brave. Quiet."

Ash looked away.

"We're offering you something," Tedesco said, sharper now. "Not because of your losses. Because of your potential. We have intel on another Rocket facility. But we won't give it to you unless you're in this fully."

Ash swallowed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means running missions. Quiet ones. Dangerous ones," Looker said. "Authorized, legitimate. You'll be working with us directly. You'll be doing more than hitting buildings. You'll be changing the course of this war."

Ash took a step back, breathing in slow. The air was cold and heavy in the office. Pikachu looked up at him. His mind flashed with images—Delia smiling in the kitchen, Brock cheering him on, Red standing defiant in the firelight of Viridian, Dawn asking him not to do anything reckless.

Ash looked up at Looker.

"You're sure this is real?"

Looker stepped forward, extending a hand. "As real as it gets."

Ash stared at it for a long time. Then he took it.

"Alright," he said. "I'm in."

Looker's smile flickered into something harder to read. Tedesco said nothing. Just the quiet scribble of a pen on paper as he logged something into a folder.

"Welcome aboard, Ash Ketchum," Looker said.

Ash sat across from Looker and Tedesco, his hands on his knees, fingers laced tightly together.

Looker leaned forward, casting a long shadow across the table. His tie was crooked. His stubble had gone gray. He looked like he hadn't slept in days—but his eyes gleamed with practiced intensity.

"Let's not waste time, Ash," Looker said, his voice gravelly but not unkind. "You and your friends made a move in Viridian that the rest of the region's too scared to even dream about. That's bold. And reckless. And admirable."

Tedesco didn't blink. He stayed silent in the back corner, arms crossed. Watching Ash like a hawk behind polished lenses.

Ash gave a subtle nod. "We're just getting started. If you really want to help us take Kanto back… say the word."

Looker cracked a half-smile.

"I do. I really do. But trust—real trust—comes through action. And before we start throwing names, files, and targets on your table… we need to see what you're made of, outside of brute force."

He opened a locked drawer and slid a worn black folder across the table. It was unmarked, except for a small red triangle stamped in the corner.

"There's someone in Celadon City," Looker continued. "An informant. They've been passing intel to us from inside Team Rocket. They've uncovered names, locations, shifts in the hierarchy—things we can use. This here—" he tapped the folder, "is a one-time drop. You pick it up from them, and deliver it back. Quiet. No one sees you, no one follows you. In and out."

Ash furrowed his brow. "Celadon's crawling with Rocket presence. If this guy's on the inside, isn't he in danger already?"

"Very much so," Looker replied. "Which is why time is crucial. The meeting point is just outside the city—a rundown greenhouse. You'll find it on the southern edge, where the city fades into the wild. Be there by dusk."

Tedesco finally spoke, his voice low and cold. "This isn't a brawl, Ketchum. It's a test of subtlety. You're not just picking up a file. You're showing us you know how to play in the shadows."

Ash glanced down at the folder, then back up at the two men. "What's in the dossier?"

Looker raised an eyebrow. "Insurance. Let's just say if it falls into the wrong hands… a lot of people die."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Ash nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll do it."

Looker leaned back, satisfied. "Good. We'll have a satellite on standby—monitoring the area for movement. If you're compromised, improvise. But under no circumstances should the package be destroyed."

Tedesco added quietly, "Failure is not something we tolerate often. Make sure you're the exception."

Ash stood up, sliding the folder into his backpack. The weight of it already felt heavier than it should.

Looker smiled again.

"Oh, and Ash? One more thing."

Ash turned toward the doorway.

"Your mother would be proud."

The words stung like a needle to the ribs. Ash didn't respond—he just walked out

The sky over Celadon City was a mix of gray and rust by the time Ash arrived on foot at the outskirts, where the concrete gave way to wild overgrowth and cracked paths. He stood outside the Celadon Botanical Research Center—a massive, aging greenhouse that had once been a source of pride for the city. Now, it looked abandoned, like the rest of the region slowly rotting from the inside out under Team Rocket's shadow.

Ash pulled his hood tighter and adjusted the earpiece Looker had given him.

"You're not here for a garden tour," Looker's voice crackled in his ear. "Head around the back. You'll find a side door. Our contact left it unlocked."

"Got it," Ash muttered, more to himself than to the voice. His boots pressed softly against the dirt as he moved silently, slipping past shattered glass panes and rusted vines. The place reeked of damp air and decay—like something beautiful had died here long ago.

Once inside, the dim green light from dying plants filtered through the glass above. Broken watering systems still hissed weakly in the silence.

Tedesco's voice, cold and clinical, chimed in next. "There's a hidden cache underneath the central greenhouse table. You're retrieving a hard drive. It contains encrypted files about Rocket operations in the northeast sector. Do not open it. Do not ask what's on it. Just bring it back."

Ash narrowed his eyes. "And if someone's already here?"

Tedesco didn't answer. Looker did.

"Then you do what you must, Ash. You're not a boy anymore. You can handle a little resistance."

Ash clenched his jaw, moving through rows of wilting plants and shattered pots. It felt wrong—sneaking around like this without backup, no Pokémon battle, no honor in it. Just shadows and secrets. But he kept going.

Reaching the central chamber, Ash located the large greenhouse table and crouched beneath it. He brushed aside old soil and plastic sheeting, revealing a latch. He opened it carefully—and there it was. A sleek, matte black drive tucked in foam padding. He reached for it—

Then a voice echoed behind him.

"Well, well. Didn't expect company today."

Ash stood up fast, spinning around. Three men stood in the doorway, all in nondescript black jackets. Not Rocket uniforms, but they weren't just wandering tourists either. One of them stepped forward.

"You're not Rocket. So who sent you?"

Ash stepped forward, not backing down.

"Just here to pick something up. Don't want trouble."

The lead thug smirked. "You walked into the wrong garden, pal."

The three lunged. Ash dove to the side, dodging a blow aimed at his ribs.

"Pikachu, Iron Tail!"

He spun, smashing into the nearest attacker's side and sending him sprawling into a row of broken pots. The second charged with a metal pipe, but Ash ducked the swing and drove a fist into his gut, adrenaline burning through his limbs. Pikachu dropped the third with a Thunderbolt that sparked through the air and lit the glass ceiling like a lightning storm.

Ash was breathing hard. The thugs were unconscious. The greenhouse echoed with the sound of his pulse.

"You alright?" Looker asked coolly over the earpiece.

Ash picked up the drive. "Yeah. Got what you wanted."

"Good," Tedesco responded. "Then get out. Quickly. They weren't supposed to be there."

Ash didn't ask questions—just bolted through the cracked corridors, Pikachu at his side. The two of them dashed into the thickening dusk, disappearing into the trees surrounding the greenhouse.

As he reached the trail that led back toward the city outskirts, Ash slowed his pace, staring at the drive in his hand.

He didn't know why, but something didn't sit right.

This didn't feel like justice. It felt like the beginning of something deeper… and darker.

Still, for now, it was a victory. One step closer.

One step deeper.

A/N: I know that recent chapters involving Team Rocket and now Looker might seem confusing and hard to follow, but I needed to introduce these characters. The character Tedesco isn't made up. He was actually Looker's fellow detective during an episode in the Pokémon Black and white Series. Ash performing various tasks for Looker and the international Police might also sound unrealistic and questionable, but these events will play a prominent role much later in the story. So if these next few chapter's seem difficult to follow or understand, I apologize!
